Classic Christianity – Book of Hebrews P16 (10-03-23)

Are You Resting in The Finished Work of Jesus Christ?

~ When most people hear the word, “Faith” mentioned in the bible most think of simply believing something without seeing anything at all. To most people, faith is a type of “blind faith.” Yet, they place their faith in the teaching of other people. They place their faith in their religious upbringing. They place their faith in science and technology. They place their faith in man. They place their faith in their own understanding of things. But true faith is a very practical word. And it is not just a biblical word either. Faith is applying proper responses to Truth. Faith is when a person is given knowledge of understanding of something (no matter what that is), and then they apply faith in their own life by excising faith with a proper response. Most people will NOT exercise faith when it comes to the word of God. They hear something in the word of God and it goes in one ear and out the other. As we have seen repeatedly, most do not believe everyone’s sins were forgiven on the cross. They discount the word of God where it says, “God is NOT counting our sins against us anymore.” Real faith says thank you to God for what He has done for us. As a reminder, Jesus also gave a stark warning, when He said in Luke 18:8, “I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” This is a clear indication that faith is not going to be found in very many people in the last days. Those with eyes to see and ears to hear, can see and hear what is going on. Those who are listening to the Holy Spirit, see with God’s eyes, and hear with God’s ears to see and hear the Truth of what is happening in the world today. So take the warnings of God seriously. Exercise faith on what you have seen and heard. Responding properly to Truth is Faith exercised.

Now responding improperly to Truth has major consequences that we all need to be reminded of. And this is not just for us, but for everyone, because ignoring this in the word of God has ETERNAL consequences that the book of Hebrews explicitly states. Don’t ignore the warning, and heed it, and respond to it by faith. Faith tells Truth to others too. And as a reminder, just like John the Baptist was a preacher of Truth, we also are preachers of TRUTH too. We are on this side of the cross. Behold Jesus, the Lamb of God who TOOK Away the SINS of the World. Believe it! Place faith in TRUTH.

~ “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.” Hebrews 2:1-4

~ “It’s one thing to say I believe that chair will hold me that’s an intellectual assent that I’ve looked at it, analyzed it and said, I think it’ll hold me but I’m not facing that right now you are, you not only looked at a chair and believed it would hold you, you’d be stupid to be sitting in it if you didn’t believe it would hold you. And then you faith it by sitting in it. And so there’s the case of a person saying, Yes, I believe this is the Messiah. Yes, I believe he did die on the cross for the forgiveness of sins. But, our tradition says we need to go back here to get forgiven. And we need this. And we need that. And we need that. And he’s saying, Hold on a minute. Don’t ignore the truth of what Jesus Christ is saying over here. And you can’t hold on to both of these at the same time, because a double minded man is going to become unstable in all ways. And so you cannot hold on to this thing that Jesus is the totally sufficient Messiah, and then hold on to tradition has any benefit at all to you. And it just means you’ve not come to a saving knowledge of Christ, Jesus Christ, a saving relationship, you know about him, but you don’t know him. I know about George Bush, but I don’t know George Bush, I’ve never met him. I don’t know him. He would know me from Adam. I know who he is. But I don’t know him. I know you. And there’s the difference.” ~ Bob George

Bob George 0:29
Well, let’s pray together. Father, we thank you for the living Christ alive living in us, our hope of glory. And I pray that these words will be more than words to us, but a reality to realize that we do not need to coerce. We don’t need to plan. We don’t need to manipulate. We don’t need to be trying to get people saved. We need to relax and keep our eyes upon you, and let you do the work that you began in us. And to complete the work that you’re doing in others, and to allow us therefor it to enjoy our relationship with you instead of merely endure it. And I pray that by your Holy Spirit, that you will truly take the things of the Lord Jesus Christ, deepen them into our hearts, so that they become more than words, but a reality. And I pray these things in Christ’s name, Amen.

Let’s turn to chapter two, the book of Hebrews. We’ve come to a point in the book of Hebrews, where the first chapter is talking about Christ being who he is God, He provided total purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on it because his work was finished. He became superior to all things, all things are created by him and all things were created for him. And he is in all things he is our life. He is our love is his everything. And therefore it says at the beginning of chapter two, that we need to pay more attention then to what we have heard, so that we don’t drift away. For it’s a message spoken by angels was binding and every violation of disobedience received, it’s just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? Now, here again, is the fact of the book of Hebrews, as we were talking was pointed toward the Hebrew, the Hebrew, totally steeped, rightfully so In Hebrew tradition, and steeped in the law. And these people, some recognize Jesus as who he was, they had come to believe that maybe this man or I believe this man is the Messiah. But as we talked about last week, the idea of a Messiah was twofold in scope. First of all, they were looking for the Messiah that was certainly prophesied all through the Old Testament, as a Messiah, that would be the reigning Messiah. And then also it was up there about the suffering Messiah. And a very difficult for people to pull the two together. We talked about last week, how John the Baptist, who Jesus came back and said, when you went out into that desert, did you find a reed tossing to and fro? Said absolutely not, no one has ever been like John the Baptist. And so he knew Jesus was the Messiah, what he didn’t know he saw him as the suffering Messiah, but he did not see the reigning Messiah. And so he was asking, are, are there two of you? Or is this one of the same? And as I mentioned, it’s about looking at a mountain peak. When you look at it from a distance, it looks like those two peaks are side by side. But the reality of it is, is they’re sometimes hundreds of miles away from one another. And so the suffering Messiah came and the reigning Messiah will come. And so people were looking, however, for the reigning Messiah. The last question that the disciples of the apostles asked Jesus was the fact when are you going to come and establish your kingdom? In other words what they were thinking about? When is Israel going to become a nation? When are we going to become a kingdom? When are you going to come and reign? And, of course, Jesus said, Those times were not for you to know. But that’s only in the eyes of the Father. And that will be revealed in due time. But they were looking for that. So there was a sense in which there was a following of Christ, and yet never a regeneration. And in the book of Hebrews, as you’ll go back later on to the very next chapter, you’ll see you don’t need to turn to it but chapter three, verse 19. So we see that they were not able to enter it because of their unbelief. In other words, they didn’t enter into this and then chapter four, it says the message for we have also heard the gospel preached to us just as they did, but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard it did not combine it with faith. In other words, they did not enter into it by Faith.

It’s one thing to say I believe that chair will hold me that’s an intellectual assent that I’ve looked at it, analyzed it and said, I think it’ll hold me but I’m not facing that right now you are, you not only looked at a chair and believed it would hold you, you’d be stupid to be sitting in it if you didn’t believe it would hold you. I know you. And there’s the difference.

And that’s the same thing with the Lord, we can know about Jesus, and we can study him and talk about it. But we don’t know him. And it’s not that personal relationship. So he’s saying to these people don’t ignore what’s being said to you. How can we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? The answer that is you can’t, if you think your tradition or your church denomination or your church affiliation is gonna get you to heaven, I got news for you. God doesn’t even recognize denominations. They’re arn’t any denominations in God’s economy. And when God comes and sets up His kingdom on His earth, there aren’t going to be any of these denominations sitting around. So whatever we have our, our dependency on, and our dependence dependency in and we’re so proud to say what I am, I got news for you, you’ve got a false dependency. And so do I. If my dependency if I thought people to people, or DCS, or DCS or metro Bible study, and belonging to that was going to get me to heaven. I’m crazy as a hoot owl. And this is not impressing to anybody. In other God didn’t sit in the person who look at that organization. Strong, big, wealthy. Sure, not saying that. God didn’t come to save denominations, he didn’t come to save organizations, he didn’t come to save corporations, He came to save people. And he isn’t impressed at all with all his manmade stuff that we’ve come up with. And yet we tie our identity to that. And we want to be called that. I mean, that’s where identity is. And we’re much prouder of saying I’m a Baptist or a Methodist, or Presbyterian than we are, are saying, I’m a child of the living God, I’m a child of the King. Because if you don’t know you’re a child of the King why then the best you can do why I’m a Presbyterian, I’m a Methodist, that’s about as good as you can get. If you don’t realize that is a pretty secondary identity to being a child of the living God. Isn’t it? And so we tie our identity up to a man made organization instead of to a living person, and therefore we walk and know about him. But we don’t know him.

And so he’s saying, Don’t ignore this salvation, don’t ignore what you’re hearing. This salvation, it says was first announced by the Lord it was confirmed to us by those who heard it. And God also testified to it by signs, wonders, various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will. Now, folks, let me just back up for a minute. There’s nothing wrong. Again, anything that God will bless as a supplement, he will curse as a substitute. And so there’s nothing wrong with belonging to a Baptist church or a Presbyterian Church or whatever you want to do, or an assembly or People to People group or whatever it might be. Although, I don’t know what you could join from God’s vantage point. I mean, to say I joined a church would be like saying, I joined a body because the church from God’s vantage point is a body. So how do you join a body? So you go into church tomorrow, it’s like saying, you going to body tomorrow? The church you You know, that’s from God, I’m just saying what God has to say not what man’s done to this thing. But the church is people. There was outside of on the marquee of a, what we call it church building, said, The Church of Jesus Christ meets in this building every Sunday. Pretty accurate. You see, you’re the Church of Jesus Christ, where we meet, what we put a sign on is irrelevant. In the New Testament, they used to meet under a tree, they didn’t call that tree a church. You gotta go to tree this morning, you know, some people back like their up a tree, but we don’t go to tree. So you see, from God’s vantage point, if Christ is ALIVE, living in you, that’s the body of Christ, here on the face of this earth, you are the body of Christ. Christ’s body had his head, his own body. 2000 years ago, he said, I’m going away. And when I do, I’m going to send the Holy Spirit to each one of you, and you’re going to be my body. That’s the mystery form here on this earth. And that is what the ecclesia is, which is the church. And so when we join, to be real honest, that’s why you’ll never see a membership here. You don’t you can’t join what God has joined together, the only thing you and I joined, is a relationship with Him. You and I have been joined to him, not joined an organization where you sign out a little card and fill out a form so you can get on the tithing record. That is not what God intended for his people to be doing. It is a perversion of the truth of the Word of God. And so you can’t join church, you can join the Kiwanis Club. And sometimes there’s not much difference. You can join clubs, and you can join that but you cannot join church. You can’t belong to a church, you are the church, you belong to Christ. Now we assemble ourselves together volitionally. And that’s what it says Do not forsake the assembling of ourselves together as the manner if somebody has especialy as you see the day entering. Why? Because according to God’s plan, those of us who are in Him, we need one another. But it isn’t an organization, it’s an organism. He is the head, you are the body. That’s not an organization, you don’t organize your body. You just function. And each part does its work. And think about it for a minute. Who does that finger little pinky answer to? Who’s it’s listening to right now? Well, the head I mean, my toe in down there saying, hey, wiggle, thing, is it. My gizzard and talking to my heart, if I had one that just didn’t the way it works. Every part in this body that you see, is listening to the head. Now according to the Word of God, Jesus is the head, is that correct? And we are the body. Now, how much sense do you think it would mean for these fingers to decide to get together in a committee meeting? And have a meeting and let’s determine what these thumbs ought to be doing on behalf of the head? Does that make any sense? Well, of course not any more than that toes get together and say let’s have a committee meeting down here and we’ll decide what the fingers ought to be doing on behalf of the head. Sounds stupid doesn’t it? Get the picture? That’s why he called us the sheep

Bob George 14:12
In a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, you are free to be led not by a group, but to be led by the Spirit of God who lives in you. And therefore that’s what it means to be controlled by the Holy Spirit. It doesn’t say to be controlled by spirit filled Christians, but to be controlled by the Holy Spirit of God who lives in you. If Christ is ALIVE living in you, He is perfectly capable of teaching your mind controlling your emotions directing your will. He does not need me to tell you how to behave. And therefore my role is not to be here as a fruit inspector. My role is not here to be telling you What to do and what not to do. If the Lord Jesus Christ can’t get through, for sure I can’t. Now we do have some advantage being married because if the Spirit doesn’t get through why your mate normally will. But outside of that you’re not here to control one another, we’re here to love one another. He didn’t say that you have been called to freedom, my brothers now don’t use that freedom to indulge the flesh, but rather use that freedom to control one another in love. Of course, you know, in love Yes, and love, I want to control you. You get the picture? And that’s what gives you freedom to be what God wants you to be. And you don’t have to organize the Holy Spirit. It’s the type of thing that if I am trusting God in my life to lead me, then why would I think the same God who lives in you can’t lead you? And if that’s the case, then what do I need to try to get you to do things for? Now, folks, it says in here, then it’s the same thing in regard to the entirety of the Christian life. The Christian life is Christ Jesus alive living in you, which is your only hope of glory. It is a personal relationship with a living Jesus. Now, that’s why then he says here that God testified about all of these things with signs, wonders, miracles, gifts of the Holy Spirit, look at this distributed how? According to His will. Do we get together and have a little committee meeting on who ought to have the gift of giving? Or do we have a committee meeting and determine who should have the gift of helps? Or do we sit around until everybody everybody ought to have the gift of mercy? And if we don’t have enough mercy in this group, folks, we got to get some more gifted people in here. So let’s have a seminar on how to be merciful. And we’ll see if we can teach some people how to be full of mercy. How smart would that be? Let’s have a group together. And what we need to do is to get a little group over here and we’ll learn how to be givers and will would, that wouldn’t be bad. And we will learn how to develop the gift of giving. I mean, you don’t have that gift, but we’re going to teach you how to have that gift of giving. make any sense? No, it doesn’t make any sense. You don’t sit around and teach someone how to have a gift from God. You don’t sit around and encourage someone how to have a gift from God. Gifts from God are given from God, isn’t that amazing that’s why I call it a gift from God. My keen mind picked up on that it’s I didn’t get to sleep. But I’m smart up here. When it’s a gift of God, God gives it to you. Now it’s distributed all of these things are distributed, according to His will, as he determined to do so. Now, is he going to make everybody a finger? No. Is He going to make everybody knows? No. How about ears? No Mouth, no arms? No. Be a funny looking body, wouldn’t it be somebody. If I stood up here on Sunday morning with this hair up here on top of a great big nose, just total nose there. It’d be a funny looking thing. And that’s what the body of Christ is doing. We’re sitting over here identifying ourselves by our gifts. And all the noses are sitting over this place on Sunday blowing up a storm. All the ears are over here just wiggling all over the place. All the mouths are over here speaking up a storm. All fingers are at another places just wiggling away. And everybody’s dividing the body. According to gifts. Make a sense? No sure doesn’t. Anymore and I’d say to you, I’ll tell you what, we’re gonna have an exciting time today. Everybody cut off their left hand and all this hands are gonna beat over and a backroom in there and we’re gonna have a ball over there together. The Body of Christ is the body of Christ. When you have assembly of people such as you have here within this assembly, according to God, believe me, every single gift of the Spirit that is in existence today is represented by the some of you in this body, everyone has gifts of the Spirit. But no one has all of them. And the gifts of the Spirit are not for everybody. Now, that’s a far cry, from what you see today, where everyone’s going around trying to get everybody to have the same gift. And if you don’t have it, mind, you’re not spiritual. And that gift is a sign of being spirituality. That’s the sign of being spiritual. Kind of dumb isn’t it when you understand what the body of Christ is.

Now, I want to go back and review for a moment. What we talked about very briefly for last week, what I want you to pay attention to what is talked about here is the fact that gifts of the Holy Spirit are distributed according to the will of God. Turned back with me very quickly to the First Corinthians 12. When we’re going to see that again. As we’ve come to the point in the book of Hebrews, where it’s talking about signs and wonders, and various miracles and gifts of the Spirit, why, because of that prevalence today that you’ll see and the abuse of the teaching of that it’s vitally important, we back up and spend some time on it. Now, if you’ll look at First Corinthians 12, you’re going to see something there, where he says about spiritual gifts, brother, I don’t want you to be ignorant. And Paul, very subtly, is kind of reminding those people where they came from before he met him. So he said, I want to remind you that when you are pagan, somehow or other you are influenced and led astray by mute idols, Paul’s, subtle isn’t he? Kind of like a meat cleaver. And what he’s saying to him, when I first met you, you people were so dumb that you were following idols, and you were being led by pagans and mute idols. And I want to remind you, you’re not that smart. And so I want to put you kind of where you need to be because Paul, and the apostles were the authority on the truth of the Word of God. And he said, I want you to listen to what I’m saying about this, because you’re out in left field on it. And there can be some left fielders here. And what he’s saying to you, I want you to understand and quit hanging on to something, one way or the other. for or against, quit hanging on to something. And listen to what the Word of God has to say. Forget your tradition, forget your experience. And I want you to listen to what the Word of God has to say. So he said, Therefore, I tell you that no one who speaks the speaking by the Spirit of God says Jesus be cursed, and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. So he said, there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord, there are different kinds of workings, but the same God works all of them and all men. Now to each one, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. In other words, spiritual gifts are for the body, not for you. A cow doesn’t drink her own milk, she produces it for someone, somebody else. An apple tree doesn’t need its own apples. It’s for the benefit of someone else. gifts within the body, are not for you, therefore the body for the mutual edification of the Body of Christ. So that’s number one, you need to understand about that. To each one, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good to one part of the body, there is given through the Spirit, the message of wisdom, to another in the body, there is a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, same Spirit that gave wisdom gives knowledge to another, there’s a faith by the same Spirit and other gifts, healing. And by for that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits to another, speaking a different kinds of languages to another, the interpretation of those languages. All of these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He gives them each one just as As he determines.

Now guys, think about this because, again, you’re up against terrific amount of teaching that is contrary to the Word of God. Do you see what he’s talking about here? All gifts are given by God to who he chooses to give a gift to. Now, if you’ve received that, then again, is it your role to go around telling everybody they ought to have your gift? I mean, can you see the abuse of those type of things and the falsity in that presentation? If a gift is given to you praise God for it and shut up. It is not my job to be walking around telling everybody you ought to have the gift of teaching and if you don’t, you’re not spiritual. If you don’t have this gift, there’s something wrong with you. Well, I’ll just be a bragging obnoxious oph, designed to do nothing except to put you on some kind of a guilt trip. When God gives you a gift, use it and be quiet about it. If that’s your gift, whatever it might be, that’s great. Use it for who benefited the body. It’s no big deal. I mean, I thank God for my toes. And if one was missing I’d sure if you’re missing it. But my toe in down there sitting about what a big toe I am. And if you don’t wiggle like I do. Something’s wrong with you.

Is not and I’m not trying to discredit I want us to be thinking soberly. As the Bible says God did not give us a spirit. A gave us a spirit of a sound mind and of love, and have a sound mind.
