Classic Christianity – Book of Romans P65 (03-18-25)
Commend One Another in the Love Of Jesus Christ
~ “Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you.” Romans 16:16
The Apostle Paul made a point of commending those that He knew were in the faith and had helped him tremendously along his journey in Christ Jesus, and had pointed them out to others. Yet we know there were those that went out from us that were not a part of us (1 John 2:19). But to those who are truly in Christ, each of us is part of the body of Christ Jesus and we are to help each other out too. We love others not to earn God’s Love but because we understand the Love God has for us. We have been blessed by God, to know the riches of God in Christ Jesus. For He has given us the mind of Christ Jesus, who is alive living in ALL true believers. “For who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16 And as such the Holy Spirit is pointing out to us those that have helped us along our Christian path, to learn the Truth about God and His righteousness and His total forgiveness at the cross. All we can do is thank God for what He has given to us (everything) in Him, and to thank others that we know who are part of the body of Christ that have been so helpful to us along the way, teaching us TRUTH. And Truth never stops teaching and training us in ALL things. It doesn’t end just with knowing forgiveness, but we are learning ALL Truth by His Spirit living in us. And there is much more to be understood in this world that we live in. And He blesses us with Wisdom and understanding, if we are willing to abide in Him. Ask for more wisdom from God to understand TRUTH and to know how wide and deep and the length the Love of God is for us.
“… for reason of this I bow my knees to the Father, from whom every family in the heavens and on earth is named, that He might give you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power by His Spirit in the inner man, for Christ to dwell in your hearts through faith, being rooted and being founded in love, so that you may be fully able, with all the saints, to comprehend what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ surpassing knowledge, so that you may be filled unto all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:14-19
O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor?” “Who has first given to God, that God should repay him?” For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen." Romans 11:33-36
“Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” John 17:17
…..
And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, having done what, will I inherit eternal life?”
And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good, except God alone.
~ “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” 1 John 5:12
~ Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one believing in Me, even if he should die, he will live. And everyone living and believing in Me shall never die, to the age. Do you believe this?” John 11:25,26

“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea. Welcome her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her with anything she may need from you. For she has been a great help to many people, including me.
Greet Priscab and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who have risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. Greet also the church that meets at their house.
Greet my beloved Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia.
Greet Mary, who has worked very hard for you.
Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow countrymen and fellow prisoners. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.
Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord.
Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and my beloved Stachys.
Greet Apelles, who is approved in Christ.
Greet those who belong to the household of Aristobulus.
Greet Herodion, my fellow countryman.
Greet those from the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord.
Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, women who have worked hard in the Lord.
Greet my beloved Persis, who has worked very hard in the Lord.
Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me as well.
Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brothers with them.
Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas and all the saints with them.
Greet one another with a holy kiss.
All the churches of Christ send you greetings.
Now I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who create divisions and obstacles that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Turn away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.
Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice over you. But I want you to be wise about what is good and innocent about what is evil.
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
Timothy, my fellow worker, sends you greetings, as do Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater, my fellow countrymen.
I, Tertius, who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord.
Gaius, who has hosted me and all the church, sends you greetings.
Erastus, the city treasurer, sends you greetings, as does our brother Quartus.
Now to Him who is able to strengthen you by my gospel and by the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery concealed for ages past but now revealed and made known through the writings of the prophets by the command of the eternal God, in order to lead all nations to the obedience that comes from faith — to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.” Romans 16:1-27
Pray to God:
Do you really want to know the WHOLE Truth of what is going on today?
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7
Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the world today and give me the wisdom to know the truth and identify the lies of the devil. Thank you God.”
~ “Now you could not be saved eternally by the life of Christ apart from the cross. The fact is, the cross is what took away the cause of spiritual death. Are we together? Death has a consequence. Sin has a consequence. What’s the consequence of sin? Death. It’s not a paddling, it’s not a woodshed, it’s death. The wages of sin. The consequence of sin is death. We were born in Adam, dead, and when you’re dead, you need what? Life. Forgiveness does not bring life. Resurrection brings life. But before he could resurrect us from our state of spiritual death, because we’re a new creation. People say, Well, we’re all created an image of God. You’ve heard that we’re all God’s children. We’re all created in the image of God. No, we’re not. Adam was created in the image of God, but in the fifth chapter of Genesis, it said, When Adam had Seth, he was born in the image of Adam. So you and I were born in the image of Adam, not created in the image of God. Adam fell, and we were born into that fallen state. Now, when are we created in the image of God? When you’re born again. If any man be in Christ, he’s what a new what? Creation, a new creation. Old things have passed away, and behold, all things have become new. So we weren’t born in the image of Christ. We had to be born again in the image of God, and that’s what happens to us when we come to Christ by faith. And when we see this testimony of Paul’s, we’re going to see that what Paul encountered was Jesus. He came face to face with Jesus, and His life was changed, born again to the Spirit of God.” ~ Bob George

Well, if you’ll turn to the 16th chapter of the book of Romans. As all of you know, we have been teaching through the book of Romans, and then, as we got to the end of chapter 15, we went over to the book of Acts in order to have the historical account of what Paul was talking about when he wrote to the Romans that he was going to Jerusalem. And the reason he was going to Jerusalem, one of the reasons was to deliver an offering that had been taken by all of the churches that he had been visiting in order to try to help the believers in Jerusalem. We talked about, the fact is, how Paul went back there and announced all of the wonderful things that was happening to the Gentile world, and how many of the Gentiles had received Christ only to hear the response that, you know, in essence, that’s nice, Paul. But we Hebrews have also been coming to the Lord in great volume, and we’re just very zealous for the law. And so you see that conflict that was taking place between the church of Jerusalem, the gospel that went to the Hebrews and the gospel that ultimately went to the Gentiles. And so as we closed chapter 15, why Paul was again mentioning the fact that I am going and heading to Jerusalem, and then we took the time in the book of Acts to describe that event. And now we’re coming to the last chapter in this wonderful book of Romans, probably one of the greatest books of theology that is in the Scripture today. And so Paul is now going to end up his writing there.
So he starts out, I commend to you our sister Phoebe the servant of the church in Cenchrea, I ask you to receive her and the Lord in a way that’s worthy of the saints, and to give her any help that she may need from you, for she has been a great help to many people, including me. And again, it shows the role many times, of how helpful women have been in the proclamation of the gospel and helping those who were attempting to get the gospel out in into different areas of the world. He said, greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, they risk their lives for me, and not only I, but for the churches of the Gentiles, and are grateful to them again.
You say, risking their lives. How do people do that? Well, many times it was being in an area where Christians were being sought out to be killed, and people were hiding them, just like in some areas where some are being persecuted, that Christian people have taken them in and hidden them from the enemies, and so a person is putting themselves in personal danger in doing that. And I’m sure that was what was taking place there. Greet also the church that meets at their house. Again, you see a lot of different things that in this teaching, where did the church meet in the early days? In homes. And that’s where the church was, which took place until the time that it was named a national religion, and they had to start building huge edifices and and huge buildings and everything else in order to house all the people that, in essence, were forced to come to church and to be Christians. But in the early days, the original church, the pure church, the purity of the church, they met in homes, and it said they met daily, many times for the apostles teaching and for fellowship and for prayer, which is in essence, what the church is supposed to be. It’s supposed to be a place where we can learn, where we can have fellowship with one another, and where we can pray with each other and for one another. And those kind of fellowships met in the homes. In our fellowship. Here we are beginning that process, and we’re training people right now in the process of that, of being, ultimately leaders that can open up their homes and have church homes that will meet periodically in the different areas of this city, and there’s where a lot of growth will take place, like home Bible studies, where people are able to get together in smaller groups and to fellowship with one another, and to pray with one another, and to know what to pray for, because you know the burden of the heart of the people that are with you, and for the apostles teaching.
And so it says to greet them that that met in the in the home there, it says to greet my dear friend, Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in a province of Asia. So you’re talking about first converts in different places. Paul had a fantastic ministry throughout that entire area. Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you. We have all of these different people and these different names that Paul is talking about and how they’re outstanding among the apostles, as they were in Christ before I was. So he’s naming people that were in Christ before he was, people who came to the Lord and were built in their relationship with the Lord through his ministry. And you have this whole area of talking about different people.
And I was thinking through this, that if this isn’t what People to People is all about, it’s people reaching people. It’s not what this big group is doing. And you know, so many times you in Christendom, you, you, you hear people talking constantly. We met some people last night and talking constantly about the size of the church, and did you see the church? And we’ve got a restaurant in the church, and we’ve got a coffee house in the church, and, you know, we got bowling alleys, and we’ve got all of this type of thing. And you think, My God, what has happened to the intent of the church? The church isn’t meant to be a recreation center. The church is meant to be a place for the apostles teaching and for fellowship and prayer. And no one ever in those things ever talk about what is taught, or how they’re growing in the Lord or what Jesus is doing in their life. It’s just, here’s the activities that we have, and we have this, and we have this, and it becomes like a big bragamony after a while about what all we have. And the issue is that you can have all of those things, but if you don’t have Jesus, you have nothing. And there are many people who are attracted to those things because of the activities and because of the convenience of things, but never get to the root of their own depravity, and never get to the part of where Christ, Jesus came to save people and to grow people in him.
So he goes ahead in verse 11, greet Herodion, my relative, greet those in a household, and Narcissus, who are in the Lord. Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, those women work hard in the Lord. Greet my dear friend Persis, another woman who has worked very hard in the Lord. Had a lot of women working very diligently for the proclamation of the gospel. Greet Rufus chosen in the Lord and his mother, who has been a mother to me as well, to me too. So here was a very close relationship that Paul was talking about. And so he goes ahead and just keeps talking about different people that he has come in contact with. And it’s interesting to me that as you go through and you see all these names that he was talking about people who have been influential to other people. And then he says, Which one of my great pastors greet one another with a holy kiss. And I guess that’s different from an unholy kiss. But he said, to greet one another and all the churches of Christ, it says, send their greetings.
And now Paul is going to give a great warning to each and every one of us, a great warning to the people in the early church that is just as applicable today as it was back in those days. I urge you brothers who said to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching that you have learned. It says, Keep away from them, because such people are not serving our Lord Jesus, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery, they deceive the minds of naive people.
And folks, those are some warnings that are so good for us to grab a hold of, to realize that there are people in ministries that basically are there to cause divisions and to put obstacles in the way of people that are contrary to the teaching. And one of the ways that that takes place is, well, what was written back in there is not relevant today. After all, we live in 21st century. So it’s, it’s, it has to be relevant. The music has to be relevant. Hymns. You got radio stations today that wouldn’t even know what a hymn was if they played it. All you have is modern music. And there’s nothing wrong with some of the modern music. It’s good, but there’s a ton of it that’s bad. And the issue is that what you need is a balance you never want to get to the point of grabbing a hold to the things of the world and ignoring the things that have built saints for 1000s of years. And that is not only good teaching, but good music as well. And so the the idea that that’s out of out of sync is nonsense. If you don’t teach your children good music, they’re never going to learn good music, just like if you don’t teach them good literature, they’re never going to learn good literature. And if bad literature doesn’t harm people, then good literature doesn’t help people, but the issue is that it can do both, and we need to expose people to good things the same way that they’re exposed to the things of the world.
We have people today that come down and they say, Well, the Bible is not relative. As an example, you have people that get into the situation and say, Well, I know that the Bible says that women shouldn’t be pastors, but we live in this generation. No, that’s not the case that we live in this generation. The Bible says that women should not be pastors, and there’s reason for that, and it says that a woman should not lead or be in a position of leadership over a man. That’s not that a woman is lesser than a man in any way, shape or form. It certainly is not that they’re not smart, they are. It’s not that women are not brilliant, in many cases, they are. It’s the case that there is roles for people. I don’t believe women belong on the fighting lines in a war, either, but yet some people put them there. I don’t believe they belong there. I believe that some of the problems we’re running into in the service today is because we violated that truth. But the issue is that there are places that men belong and places that men that women belong, and if a woman is put into a position of leadership over men in a church assembly, what are you going to do when you go home to your husband? And so I have seen that violated through the ages, and through my experiences in churches, I’ve seen it violated, and I’ve also seen the repercussions of it, and so I understand thoroughly what he is saying. There’s positions that you really don’t need to be in. I wouldn’t want my wife to be in a position of being a pastor just because of the things that you have to go through and the things that you have to be exposed to that you really don’t want your wife or a woman to have to do so, but you’ve got people today that are smarter than the Bible, and so the Bible’s not relevant to this day and age. So let’s have women pastors. The Bible says don’t do that, and when you do have that, you’re doing something that is in violation of Scripture. Can a woman be teaching? Absolutely, she can be teaching. And there’s some fine women teachers, but they’re not in a position of leadership over people. And there is the key. It’s not the case of teaching, it’s the case of being in a position of leadership over a man. And so those are principles that God has laid down that are inerrant principles, and they’re truth, and we need to learn to follow them, and we need to learn to the reasons behind them. So those are just a few of the things that we’ve seen in this modern day thinking that throw away the Bible, it’s kind of old fashioned, and let’s get real, and let’s get pertinent with with with the things of the world today.
Now he says people doing that are not serving the Lord, but their own appetites, their their smooth talk and flattery that deceive the minds of naive people. Now, again, this issue of flattery, the Bible talks a lot about flattery and a flattering tongue is something they say that you need to be careful of. Now, guys, a flattering isn’t coming up and saying you did a good job or something that’s encouraging, that’s encouraging people, but you know the difference between someone just complimenting you on a good job and flattering you and you says to be careful of flattering tongues.

Now we also go to other areas of the scripture that warn against these same things. Jesus warned about it in Matthew 7: 15 through 20. He said, Watch out for false prophets. So you’re going to have real prophets and you’re going to have false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they’re ferocious wolves. By their fruit, He says, You will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit, and every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus by their fruit, you will recognize them. In Matthew or Mark 13 For false christs and false. False prophets will appear, and they will perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect, if that were possible. So be on your guard. I’ve told you everything ahead of time.
Now, folks, it talks about people who claim to be prophets. In other words, I’ve got some kind of a direct word from God that you don’t have, and that’s why you need to listen to me, and that’s why you need to support me, because I need a Rolls Royce, and I need all that stuff, so you need to get busy, and you have people who are false prophets. How do they perform? They perform signs and miracles. Are they real signs and real miracles? No, they’re phony signs and phony miracles. But they look like they are real. Do they not? You had the same thing in the Old Testament, and Pharaoh duplicated many of the miracles that were being done in the name of God. And so we need to understand that, that you have people today who are satanically empowered to do what appears to be signs and miracles, but God says they are false prophets, and he said, I’m telling you this ahead of time. Second Corinthians tells us and I will keep doing what I’m doing in order to cut the ground from under those who have an opportunity, who want an opportunity, to be considered equal with us in the findings they boast about. These are people that are saying, Listen, don’t listen to the apostles. Listen to us. We are just as knowledgeable as they are. That is not true. God gave first of all, Jesus came to this earth. Jesus then discipled the apostles who were the authority for the teaching of the Word of God. And people were coming in saying, Ah, don’t listen to them. We have just we’ve got the same kind of knowledge that they do. He said, No. Paul said, I’m going to cut the ground right out from under them if I can. He said, Those men are false prophets, deceitful workmen. We have that today going on. People are claiming to be prophets. We got people claiming to be apostles. You got people claiming all kinds of things that no one put them in that position except themselves. And yet, there are people who follow them and listen to every word they say and swear by what they utter out of their false teaching. He said, These men are false prophets. They’re deceitful workmen. They’re masquerading as apostles of Christ, and no wonder, he says, For Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. Satan can take on any of these things. It’s not surprising then that if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness, their end will be what their actions deserve.
First, Timothy, one, three through five. Paul said, I urge you that when I went to Macedonia, to stay there in Ephesus, so that you may commend certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer. So he’s saying, Teach these people to quit teaching these false doctrines, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, mysticism, these promote controversies. Rather than God’s work, which is by faith. God’s work, my friends, is by faith and faith alone. It’s not faith in miracles. It’s not faith in signs and wonders. As a matter of fact, if you need a sign and wonder, it is a repudiation of your faith. Because Jesus said you want a sign, I’ll show you a sign. Tear this temple down. I’ll build it up in three days, talking about his own resurrection from the dead. And I’ve said to people, my friends, if the resurrection from the dead isn’t a good enough sign for you. Nothing is going to be a good enough sign for you. And you can come with a one sign, and you’re going to need another sign, and then you need another sign you’ve got people are always looking for signs for God, from God. That is not faith, my friends, you do not look for signs and wonders from God. You take it by faith. God has said this is true, and by faith, you give your heart to that. And so it says that these things promote controversies, rather than God’s work, which is by faith. And the goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith, there’s false faith and there’s sincere faith. And he says, what I want you to do is to have faith that comes from a pure heart and a good conscience. First, Timothy says, If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree with the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to godly teaching, he is conceited and he understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in evil suspicions, in envy and strife and malicious talk and evil suspicions and constant friction between men of corrupt mind who have been robbed of the truth and think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
Have you by chance ever heard anyone teaching that godliness is a means to financial gain? Have you ever heard that that if you do something godly, God is going to bless you financially? Have you ever heard of name it and claim it, of blabbit and grab it? Have you ever heard of any? Could it be that that may be prevalent in Christianity today, you better believe it. You better believe it. It’s called prosperity gospel, prosperity gospel from Jesus, who died on a cross naked, gambling for his cloak, of the apostle Paul, who, at the end of his life, asked somebody to please bring his parchment and a cloak, because I’m cold. From people that we know lived as he said, We live like dogs sometimes. Jesus said, foxes have holes. I don’t even have a place to lay my head, and we claim prosperity gospel. My friends, those type of teachings are coming from false prophets.
Now is a false prophet going to try to look like a false prophet or a good prophet? If you were a spy, let’s say you were a Russian spy here in America, would you come over here talking with a big accent, or would you try to talk like an American? Would you try to look like an American? Would you act like an American? Would you dress like an American? But deep down under the skin you’re a communist Russian. Which would you do if you were a good spy? Act like a Russian or act like an American? When you have a false prophet, he’s trying to act as holy as holy can get. And he’s going to come up with all the vernacular of holy appearing people, and he’s going to take on actions that people perceive as holy, even wearing collars on backwards, which McGee said shows they’re walking in the wrong direction. Robes, funny hats, black outfits, holy people on the outside. What did Jesus call them? Whitewash sepulchers. You got yourself all dressed up on the outside, but underneath that robe and underneath that cloak is a heart that is hard as a brick. And folks, we have to understand that, that that is what truth is, is we have in our midst false prophets, and these are people who love to stir up controversy and malicious talk and evil suspicions and friction, and they’ve been robbed of the truth the Bible says, and are teaching people that godliness is a means to financial gain. If you just tithe, you’re going to be blessed, anybody ever heard that? How many of you ever heard that? We all have. Is that true?
It appears to me that the Bible says that we are already blessed. We are blessed, are we not in the beloved and so giving is giving because you’re already blessed. You don’t give to get blessed. You give because you are blessed. And if you haven’t been blessed by God, why would you want to be giving to the work of God? I mean, if there’s, if there’s been no reality from God’s presence in your life. Why would you want to help somebody else to come to know this Jesus that isn’t blessing you? Come to Jesus so you can be miserable like me. And so the reason that you give is because God has already blessed you, and because you’re blessed, you want to see other people blessed, and that’s what the motivation for giving is, is give so that the people or the ministry or the message that blessed you can reach out And bless others. Isn’t that what it’s all about? But you see, you have people teach, no, no, you give and God’s going to multiply that. He’s going to just multiply it and multiply it. You send me $100 and he’ll send you 1000. And I believe what a lady from East West Texas wrote into one of those guys one time, it says, appears to me that you need money a lot worse than I do. So why don’t you send me the 100 and let him give you the 1000. Now he didn’t respond to that, but those are the kind of things that that go on, folks.
Teachings that we become little gods, that when you’re indwelt by Jesus, you become a little god. I’ve told people, if I’m a little god, this place is in trouble. You agree with that, not just because I’m me. I mean, if you’re a little god, they might be in trouble too. We don’t become little gods. Jesus is God clothed in an earth suit. I’m a human being indwelt by God. I’m we a man. I’m not God. I’m indwelt by God. Jesus was God clothed in humanity. It’s quite a difference between the two. He found himself in an appearance as a man, but he was God clothed in humanity. I’m humanity indwelt by God. And people think that you’re a little God. Now, what does that mean? Well, if you’re a little God, then anything you think, and anything you say comes from God, and all you do is speak it, and that’s God speaking, and you have people come down and say, God told me to get divorced. Well, I’m sorry, but I don’t think God told you that, not when the Bible says something different than that. God told me to go kill somebody. I don’t like abortion clinics, so God told me to go blow them up and kill people in the process. I’m sorry, that is not God, is it? And so that theology leads you that if I’m a little god, that anything I think and anything I say must be from God. Is that true?
