Classic Christianity – Book of Romans P02 (10-01-24)

Paul BOLDLY Told it Like it Is!

~ “But Saul was empowered all the more and kept confounding the Judaeans [Ἰουδαίους (Ioudaious)] dwelling in Damascus, proving that this is [Jesus] the Christ.” Acts 9:22 When you boldly proclaim the Truth, the legalists will not like you. And when you continue to confound them, they will get very upset with you indeed. Here is a trustworthy saying, if a person is liked by most everyone in the world, rest assured that person is Not preaching TRUTH and is an enemy of God. “You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever chooses to be a friend of the world renders himself an enemy of God.” James 4:4 Those that hate you will even go out of their way to kill you, one way or another or kill the message, by shooting the messenger. “After many days had passed, the Judaeans [Ἰουδαῖοι (Ioudaioi)] conspired to kill him, but Saul learned of their plot. Day and night they watched the city gates in order to kill him. One night, however, his disciples took him and lowered him in a basket through a window in the wall.” Acts 9:23-25

Paul was not one to mince words. He always told it like it is. He was bold in his proclamation of the gospel and as time went on, he became even bolder in the Truth of the word of God. Paul was not liked by most of the religious zealots around the world. They indeed sought to kill him. “And he was coming in and going out with them in Jerusalem, speaking BOLDLY in the name of Lord. And he was speaking and was debating with the Hellenists. But they were seeking to kill him. But the brothers having known it, brought him down to Caesarea and sent him away to Tarsus.” Acts 9:28-30

Today, it is no different. If you boldly proclaim TRUTH, most people will not like you and will seek to silence you. You will not be a friend of the world. And we are not talking about side bar issues here, we are talking about the very foundational Truths of the word of God. Jesus took away the sins of the WHOLE world, and is Not counting anyone’s sins against them today. People will always interject a “but” in there though. They will say, “but we need to ask for forgiveness,” or “but we need to go to mass,” or “but we need to say our prayers,” or “but, but, but,” and on and on it goes.

Then there are people today that will use the Grace message as a means to give themselves credibility and prop themselves up, while at the same time promoting other ministries and lies of Satan that teach the exact opposite of the TRUTH of the word of God. It’s obvious as to what is going on for those that have the Holy Spirit living in them. For the Spirit of God will reveal all things to the true child of God, for the mind of Christ Jesus lives in the true believer. And if people are not willing to abide in the Holy Spirit, it is time to let Satan and the demons have their way with them. For they are not willing to listen to sound doctrine, but instead will draw to themselves what their itching ears want to hear.

~ Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called an apostle, and set apart for the gospel of God— the gospel He promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, regarding His Son, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

Through Him and on behalf of His name, we received grace and apostleship to call all those among the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 1:1-7

Here is where Saul meets Jesus on his journey to Damascus:

~ Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord. He approached the high priest and requested letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any men or women belonging to the Way, he could bring them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

As Saul drew near to Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?”

“Who are You, Lord?” Saul asked.

“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” He replied. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless. They heard the voice but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could not see a thing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was without sight, and he did not eat or drink anything.

In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a vision, “Ananias!”

“Here I am, Lord,” he answered.

“Get up!” the Lord told him. “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”

But Ananias answered, “Lord, many people have told me about this man and all the harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. And now he is here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on Your name.”

“Go!” said the Lord. “This man is My chosen instrument to carry My name before the Gentiles and their kings, and before the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for My name.”

So Ananias went to the house, and when he arrived, he placed his hands on Saul. “Brother Saul,” he said, “the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

At that instant, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and his sight was restored. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. And he spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. Acts 9:1-19

Pray to God:

Do you really want to know the WHOLE Truth of what is going on today?

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the world today and give me the wisdom to know the truth and identify the lies of the devil. Thank you God.”

~ “Now you’re going to see if you turn over to Acts 11 during this period of time. Paul raised some havoc there in Jerusalem as a born again believer. Did you ever do that when you’re first born again? Cause some havoc among people? Well, he caused a bunch of it. And then remember, he had to be led over the wall, and he disappeared, literally, for 18 years. And you say, Well, what in the world was God doing with Paul for 18 years? He just said, I’ve got a calling on your life to go to the Gentiles and proclaim His good news. What was he doing in those 18 years? Knocking legalism out of him. How many of us who have grown up in a terrifically legalistic environment when you come to Christ, takes years and years and years for God to push that out of you? And we have people very close to us who talk about that thing. In my particular case, I was never that deeply involved in legalism. I grew up in a Presbyterian Church where I heard nothing. And I’m not saying that’s all Presbyterian churches, but the ones I went to, you heard nothing. Bibles were something you never opened. They were something to kind of look at, but never opened. So I didn’t know anything. So I was fresh meat. When I came to Christ, I had nothing to unlearn. I knew nothing. I knew Jesus was the Son of God. Had no idea what that meant. I knew all of those things intellectually, but didn’t know what they meant. So the issue here is there are many other people who grew up in so called evangelical environments that was full of legalism. And it takes time, and some are worse than others. And you take some who literally try to be Hebrews in regard to their legalistic observance, they’ve taken all the Hebrews the laws of the Hebrews, and they’re trying. It’s kind of like, well, the Hebrews couldn’t do it, but watch my smoke. But the issue is, they can’t do it either, but they were steeped in legalism. Now they come to Christ. Does that legalism just pour off of you immediately? No way. It takes years, many times, to push that legalism out of your thinking process and to walk strictly according to the grace of God. And so I believe that those years that Paul spent in Tarsus was the Lord dealing with him in such a way as to teach him the magnitude of the grace of God, and in so doing, pushing out the legalistic belief system that he was in.” ~ Bob George

And so he says that go into there and and place your hands on him to restore his sight. Lord Ananias answered, I’ve heard many reports about this man and all the harm he’s done to your saints in Jerusalem. You’re going to hear this guy saying, Lord, you want me to go who? He has come out here with authority from the chief priest to arrest all who call on your name. This is the mean guy you’re telling me to go too. But the Lord said to Ananias, go this man. Now, here’s the key. Is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer in my name. Now here my friend. Is the declaration from God concerning Paul and his mission. The mission of Paul by the Lord is, this is my chosen instrument. I have chosen you, Paul. I have chosen him to go to the Gentiles and to the kings of the Gentiles and before the people of Israel, and I’ll show him how much he’s going to have to suffer in my name, Ananias went to the house and entered in placing his hands on Saul. He said, Brother, Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here, has sent me so that you will see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit. And immediately something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again, and he got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Paul’s conversion.

You know, I don’t know about you, but many people feel that a conversion experience has to be like the apostle Paul’s, where you see some light from heaven and see some unique experience taking place. Nothing to be farther from the truth. But In Paul’s case, he had to get his attention, and he got his attention, and he got his intention in such a way that Paul knew that there was a calling upon his life, and that calling was he is a chosen instrument to carry the name of God to the Gentiles and to their kings, and before the people of Israel, that was his calling. That’s why he was alive.

Now you’re going to see if you turn over to Acts 11 during this period of time. And so I believe that those years that Paul spent in Tarsus was the Lord dealing with him in such a way as to teach him the magnitude of the grace of God, and in so doing, pushing out the legalistic belief system that he was in.

Well, they sent Barnabas, the man of encouragement. That’s his name. He was the encourager. So you can understand why they sent Barnabas to find Paul. And they sent Barnabas and in verse 25 chapter 11, Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Paul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch, so full of so for for a whole year, Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught a great number of people, and the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch, that was the first time that they were referred to as Christians.

You’re then going to see that Paul, later on, his name was changed to Paul, and that was an interesting thing is over in chapter 13, you go down to verse nine, and you’re going to see there where it was always Barnabas and Saul Barnabas and Saul Barnabas and Saul. And then in verse nine, it says, then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Lemmas and said, you’re a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right. You’re full of kinds of all kinds of deceit and trickery, trickery. You will never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord. Now, the hand of the Lord is against you. You’re going to be blind, and for a time you’ll be unable to see the light of the sun. Now that is the first time that we see that Saul was named to Paul. Was called Paul, but from that point on, all you ever hear is Paul never Saul used again. So we look at that as a little bit of history behind who this man called Paul, Saul of Tarsus later named Paul the minister to the Gentiles.

Now let’s pick up back in Romans. Now we have a little bit of background on him, Paul. Now he says a servant of Jesus Christ, the real word there is slave. It’s been translated a servant, but the Greek word is slave, and it’s a bond slave. So he says, a servant of Jesus Christ. And what that means is a bond slave by nature. And so we all friends, are slaves. You’re either a slave to sin or we’re a slave to Him, but we’re all slaves in one condition or another. I think if you take the word sin and use it like you would a name, Jim, Bob, Sin, and it says that sin is your owner. And when Paul, before he was a child of God, was a slave, it says to sin, sin owned me. He was my master. Sin bound me up with such tight cords that are so strong that they can only be broken by death. That’s how sin gets a hold of you and me. That’s what we’re born into. That’s why Paul is able to say in Romans seven the things I want to do I don’t do. Sin has me in its evil grasp, and all of us are born into this world in Adam, and our master is sin. Just call it what you want to call it a name Satan. It’s sin, and we are mastered by that sin. Till the things we want to do, we don’t and we can’t, and the things that we don’t want to do, we do them anyway.

Now, when sin is your master, or whatever is your master, you’re going to obey that irrespective of your own desires or interest, you’re swallowed up in the will of your master, and whether you want to or not you are obeying your master. Now, people think that’s independence, and people say, Oh, I’m independent. No, you’re not. There is no such thing as an independent person. You’re just dependent. You’re either dependent upon God or you’re dependent upon sin as your master, one of the two, no one is independent. We just think we’re independent. But no one is independent. You were born into this world to be dependent, not independent. And when you refuse to be dependent upon who you’re supposed to be dependent upon, God, you are forced to live in dependency on something, and what you turn to is the world, people, places and things. And so he says now that what happened was that by birth, I was a slave to sin, but through regeneration, through being born again, I’m now a bond servant to Jesus. A bondservant. Was one who became a servant, voluntarily, a servant under the Roman rule, a person who was a bond servant that was a position of high esteem. And Paul is saying, I have now become, through spiritual regeneration, a bond servant to Jesus Christ. I was a slave to sin. Now I’m a slave to Jesus, two different slaves, but still a slave. Now that’s translated servant in the NIV. Don’t know what your translation is, but the real translation is that of a bond slave by nature belonging to Jesus Christ. That is exactly what the translation is. I Paul a bond slave by nature who belongs to Jesus Christ.

Now he says that position of slavery is a position of high esteem, as I mentioned in the Roman rule that was a position of high esteem, and yet, notice that he put that, that I’m a slave, before he put that I’m apostle, which means, in essence, I regard the fact that my position that God gave to me as a slave is higher than the position of that of an apostle, that first and foremost, I’m a slave, and because I’m a slave, I’m an apostle. I’m going to carry out this job of apostleship. Now, again, if you remember, what we went back to was, was the fact that Paul was saying that this man was my chosen instrument. So God said I chose this man for this assignment, and Paul recognizes the truth of that, that I am a servant of Jesus Christ. I’m a slave by nature belonging to Christ, and I’m called to be an apostle. Now, folks, we think many times of an apostle as a follower of Christ, or one of the early followers of Christ, and indeed that is true. But a better understanding, I think, of this word apostle, or apostleship is an ambassador, because that really spells out what the role is that Paul was called to. An ambassador is someone who is called to represent another party in another place and with a specific mission and with the authority to carry out that that mission, if you and I were were named, we would be named by the President, by someone in a higher authority over and above us, be named by them to be an ambassador, to go to France and to represent the United States of America in that country. Is that correct or not? We would have the authority to act in that capacity. We would have all of the things necessary to speak for the President of the United States. We would be a representative of the President of United States and the country that he is president of in a foreign land. Now that is the picture that we need to get in regard to this thing called apostle.

Bob George 13:51
In our translation, it’s called to be an apostle, but again, in the original language, is it is that is called an apostle. So it’s a designation by God. I called you not to be something. I called you as an apostle. I called you as an ambassador, not to be one, that the next day you might not be one. But this is your new identity. So an apostle became an identity, not something that I am for a period of time. That’s who I am. That’s a designation I am, an apostle. Now it says I am set apart. And the designation there is permanently set apart. Now when you’re dealing with separated, and that’s what that means, separated, set apart. We would also use words like sanctified and holy. Those are all tied into the same concept that you and I have been set apart for the divine purpose for which God created us. And Paul is saying that I have been permanently set apart permanently. And that is a perfect participle in the in the Greek language. And what that means is that is a past act that is done. It’s done forever, and it has eternal consequence to it. It’s the same thing as forgiveness. It’s a past participle. It means it’s done, it’s over. It doesn’t mean we get forgiven. It means you are a forgiven person. It’s done once. I’m not going to do it again. It has eternal consequence to it, and that’s why translation sometimes we miss the dynamic of the meaning of the word of God, because when we do not translate those things in that fashion, it looks like it’s something that if I do, than God will do instead of the fact no God has already done it, and as a result of what he did, you are a part of what he did. He forgave your sins, therefore today I am a forgiven person. He was set apart forever, permanently for the gospel of God.

Now what’s the word gospel mean? Well, it’s God’s good news. The word gospel means the good news of Christ, Jesus. Again, there was an inscription that has been found in regard to Augustus, during that period of time, who was one of the rulers there in Rome. And it was talking about that, that word good news was used in a celebration of his birthday, that we celebrate his birthday and the good news of it, and that word was gospel. So the meaning of it is good news, God’s good news. So Paul was set apart for the good news of Christ, Jesus. And he talks about that this good news is gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures. Now, folks there again, what Paul was trying to say to the readers in Rome is this gospel is not new. The understanding of it is new. But the gospel was proclaimed in the prophets. It was proclaimed back in the Old Testament. David proclaimed it, Moses proclaimed it, the prophets, the minor prophets and the major prophets. It was all proclaimed. It’s nothing new. So he’s not saying that this is something that there’s the old here and then there’s a new here. It was proclaimed in the old and it was fulfilled in the new. And so he’s saying that he promised this beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures. And again, that’s an identification as to what Scriptures are they too are holy. They too are set apart. That holiness doesn’t mean what we think it means, it means set apart. What’s it set apart from? All the rest of the garbage that we have in the world today. I mean this book, if you believe this book, your thinking is set apart from the thinking of the entire world. Is it not? The whole world. This is totally different.

We and everybody comes along says, Oh, well, that was back in those days they were old fashioned. You know, homosexuality is okay today as old fashioned to think that way folks want to tell you something, truth is truth. And for truth to be truth, it has to be truth universally. If for truth to be truth, it has to be as truthful in New Guinea as it is in New York, for it to be truth. Can you go to New York or to New Guinea as an example, in those impoverished areas, and preach a prosperity gospel? Do you think you could, folks, just name it and claim it. Do you think you could? Are we alive? Do we think we could? No. How are you going to preach that in an impoverished nation? So if you can’t preach it there, don’t preach it in New York. And if you can’t preach it in both New Guinea and New York, it’s not true. One way you know something that’s true is it’s universally true? Can you go to New Guinea and tell people God was in Christ reconciling you unto Himself, not counting your sins against you? Absolutely, can you do it in New York? Absolutely, can you do it 2000 years from now if the Lord tarries? Absolutely, could you have done it 2000 years ago? Absolutely. Why? Because truth is universal. It’s forever, and it’s not for one place and then another.

And so when you’re talking about the scriptures, they are set apart as a unique document, folks, the most unique document you and I will ever hold in our hands. And you can read all of the literature, and you can become all intellectual with reading of all the literature of the world. But I want to tell you something, if the writer of that literature isn’t born again, you’re going to be hearing something. You’re going to be reading something contrary to this book, this book is truth, and truth sets you free from the error that binds you. If you want to be bound up, believe error. If you want to be set free, believe truth.

And so he’s saying that this gospel was promised, was promised to us by the prophets and the Holy Scriptures regarding his son. And now he’s going to identify who, as to his human nature, was a descendant of David, and that is the meaning of the of going into the genealogy through Joseph that was enabled him to become in the bloodline of David, who, through the Spirit of holiness, was declared with power to be the Son of God by the resurrection from the dead. Now, folks, was Jesus the Son of God before the resurrection, was he? He’s always been the Son of God. But folks, the Son of God isn’t just the designation here. Isn’t just saying who he is. He’s saying what he is. Do you see the difference? What is that? It’s a bug. What’s its name? Caterpillar. You see the difference in what it is and who it is. The designation of the Son of God through the resurrection, declared what he is. He is God. Who’s his name? What’s his name? Jesus, the Son of God. So it is a declaration that the apostle Paul makes, that by His resurrection, was the final thing that anyone needed to declare him what he is and who he is. He is God. He is God who took upon himself the nature of man, and there, He who knew no sin became sin for us at a cross, and through His resurrection, was able to give us eternal life in him, the good news of the gospel, God has appeared to us. God has shown us what perfect righteousness is in him, and in so doing, showing us our unrighteousness, so that we’ll be prepared to come to him and get his righteousness.

Through the resurrection of the dead, Jesus, Christ, our Lord, through him and for his name’s sake, we that’s all of us received grace and apostleship, in other words, an ambassadorship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes through faith. Where does obedience come from? Faith, it’s your love of God that results in dependency upon God that then results in obedience to God. Obedience without love is nothing but legalistic obedience. It’s your love of God that not that we loved him, but he what? Loved us first, that results in dependency, and I have someone who loves me perfectly. I can learn to depend upon him, and if I can learn to depend upon him, I can learn to obey Him. Now religion says, Forget that other garbage. Just get into the obedience, and let’s get to obedience and obedience. I don’t care whether you love him. I don’t care whether you’re dependent upon him or not. Just do what I tell you to do, and do it here. What you do at home’s your own business. Do it here. Look good here. That’s what religion does. Look good in the group. Oh, he’s saying that’s not true. We’re talking about we’re talking about obedience that comes from faith. Now, again, faith in who? Faith in Jesus. Again, when Jesus was here on this earth, he walked in total dependency. Did he not upon his Father? I don’t do anything unless the Father tells me to do it, I don’t say anything unless the Father tells me to say it and how to say it. That was Jesus, the Son of God. Not too bad of a Christian. How did he walk? In total dependence upon his Father. How does he want you and me to walk? In total dependence upon the father? What did that dependence upon the father do? What created obedience? Well, if I don’t do anything unless the Father tells me to do it, that’s my mindset. I’m not going to do anything unless God tells me to do it. So when God tells you to do something, and you already have a policy, then I’m not going to do anything unless he tells me to do it. Then when he tells you to do it, what do you do? You do it. It’s called obedience. Where does it come from? Faith. Faith in him. And so he says, obedience comes from faith.

And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. So now he’s a den. Identifying this is my mission. This is a mission that God gave me to take this good news to the Gentiles. I’m a slave to this. I am set apart from the entire world, and I’m set apart to do nothing except take the good news of the gospel to people. That’s what I’m set apart for, the world has no meaning to me. I am set apart from it, and I’m here for one purpose and one purpose only. I’m not here to politic. I’m not here to change the world. I’m here to give out the gospel of Jesus Christ. That’s how he saw himself, and that was his mission. And he says, Now you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. So he’s talking to the Gentile world, also applicable to the Hebrew world.

Now that is a summary, folks of what Paul is going to deal with in the whole book of Romans. Now he says, I’m going to address this to Rome who are loved by God and called to be what? Saints. Saints. When you come to Christ, what does God call you? You have a designation. What are you called? A saint. He did not you notice. Address his books to all the old sinners saved by grace and Colossae and to all the old sinners saved by grace in First Corinthians, to all the sinners saved by grace in Philippians, or Philippi. Why didn’t he say that? Well, because that’s not who you are. You’re called a saint. How’d you get to be a saint? I was an old sinner that was saved by grace, but now I’m a new creature. It’s just like the butterfly. He is now a butterfly. What it used to be? A worm, a caterpillar. What is it now? A butterfly. Well, you don’t call it an old sinner saved by grace, an old worm saved by grace. You call it who it is. It’s a butterfly. It’s got a new designation. How’d it get to be one? I was an old worm saved by grace with a new designation.
