Classic Christianity – Book of Romans P24 (11-20-24)

The Law Was Added to Show Man (male and female) His Sinfulness

~ The law came in so that the trespass would increase; but where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:20,21
~ The law shows us our sinfulness. The law is like a mirror, when we look in the mirror, we see how bad we really are. Everything that the law says to do, or not do, we CANNOT do. And therein is what the law was intended to do. It was brought in to show us our sin, and show that we could NOT keep law. And to show us we needed a savior, to save us from Death. So what does Satan do? He changes the laws. He changes things to no longer be called sin, and boy oh boy, if you call something sin in a workplace setting, you can be accused of hate crimes, or get sued by someone for NOT hiring them or firing them because they flaunt some sin big time. Yet our government pushes tolerance. And that is because the governments of the world are controlled by Satan at this point in time. Not one of the country’s leaders are anything but evil entities. There is NOT one good leader anywhere in the world. And the word of God declares that Satan is god of this world. “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” 2 Corinthians 4:4 So what does Satan do? He preaches Tolerance. He convinces everyone that there must be a little bit of good in someone at the top. And thus he has blinded the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the Truth of what is really going on today, and thus see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, Jesus who is the image of God. The reason they cannot see the light, is because they loved darkness more than light. “And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil.” John 3:19 They would rather believe the lies, than come to the knowledge of Truth and thus be saved. They think there is nothing wrong with them either, because after all the government told them it was okay to do this sin or that sin, or to look the other way and not even declare something sin anymore. And one of the biggest sins that is pushed on people today is the sin of idolatry. And everyone fell for it. After all, we ALL had our idols growing up, and it was pushed on us left and right, even by our parents. We even gave allegiance to them, without realizing it, because after all, we thought it was good to have someone, or something, or some country to look up to. We saw it with our television shows and movies and the things we were brainwashed to believe in. American Idol for example, most fell for that show big time. And yet we idolized all types of singers, sports players, movie stars, famous people, and on and on it has gone. We had hero idol worship, that Satan sold us on. And if someone talks bad about our idol(s), we lash out at the messenger(s) in anger. And folks, that is how you know you have an idol yourself, when you get angry at someone telling you truth about your idols. Yet we all had them, and most still do (including those that are children of God), and yet most are not willing to repent (change their mind), and would much rather to continue to believe Satan’s lies.

So until a person sees their Sinfulness, they will not likely want to turn to Jesus for HIS righteousness. Because after all, they have a built in WORLD support system of self-righteousness taught everywhere today and they don’t need the Righteousness of the True Jesus. They think of themselves as “basically good.” And by Satan tamping down the law of God, because the law shows us our sinfulness, we are content to remain dead in our sins of unbelief and the uncircumcision of our flesh. Satan is the great deceiver in the world today. He sells deception in a multitude of ways. He is the one that has deceived ALL the Nations of the world into believing his lies. And thus most of the world is Dead, yet they do not know it.

Be willing to change your mind. Turn to Jesus today for spiritual Life. Turn to Him for His Righteousness, not your own. Turn to Him for LIFE. Allow Him to make you a new Creature in Christ Jesus for ALL eternity. Trust in Jesus, God in flesh, to have taken away all your sins on the cross, and Now receive Him for His Life to be placed into you.

Luke 18:18,19
18 And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, having done what, will I inherit eternal life?”
19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good, except God alone.

~ “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” 1 John 5:12

~ Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one believing in Me, even if he should die, he will live. And everyone living and believing in Me shall never die, to the age. Do you believe this?” John 11:25,26

~ Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned. For sin was in the world before the law was given; but sin is not taken into account when there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who did not sin in the way that Adam transgressed. He is a pattern of the One to come.

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many! Again, the gift is not like the result of the one man’s sin: The judgment that followed one sin brought condemnation, but the gift that followed many trespasses brought justification. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive an abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

So then, just as one trespass brought condemnation for all men, so also one act of righteousness brought justification and life for all men. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

The law came in so that the trespass would increase; but where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:12-21
~ What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase? Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer? Or aren’t you aware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection. We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin. For anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, He cannot die again; death no longer has dominion over Him. The death He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life He lives, He lives to God. So you too must count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires. Do not present the parts of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and present the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. Romans 6:1-14

Pray to God:

Do you really want to know the WHOLE Truth of what is going on today?

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the world today and give me the wisdom to know the truth and identify the lies of the devil. Thank you God.”

~ “And so the law was given for the purpose of showing us that we’re sinners, so that we would turn to Christ, Jesus for our salvation. Now, as we get into these passages of Scripture, you’re going to see at the end of chapter five, then we come into chapter six and chapter seven, if you and your mind will put a parentheses around chapter six and chapter seven, because that’s what it is. It’s a parenthesis. If you were to look at verse 20 in chapter five, the law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, Grace increased all the more, so that just as Sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life. Through Jesus, Christ, our Lord, if you go over to chapter eight, therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ, Jesus, the law of the Spirit of Life has set me free from the law of sin and death. You see the flow there. It’s a continuation of thought, but in there, as Paul would normally do, he said, Now before we go forward, let’s clear up some of the dumb questions. And you’re going to have three dumb questions that are asked in chapters six and seven. Now when I say dumb questions, they’re really not dumb questions, but they’re questions that people ask that do not know what this is talking about. And so he said, I’m going to clear those up before we go on into chapter eight about no condemnation awaiting those who belong to Christ, Jesus.

Now let’s pick up in verse 12 here in chapter five, and read through there, therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, now who did that? That was Adam and death through sin. So what is the wages of sin? death. So death came to all men. And in this way, death came to all men, because all sinned. For before the law was given, sin was in the world. Now, before the law came through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus, Christ, our Lord. But before the law was given, it says sin was still in the world, but sin was not taken into account when there is no law. So when there is no law, sin is not taken into account. Nevertheless, even though sin isn’t taken into account the consequence of sin, called death, was in effect from the day of Adam to this very day. Are we together? So death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even though even over those who did not sin by breaking a command. So whether you were under the law or not under the law, death was in the world, the wages of sin was still Death to all men, from Adam forward. So there so death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin for breaking a command, as did Adam, who was the pattern of the one to come. But the gift now, this is the gift of God in Christ, Jesus, the gift of grace to us is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of one man, in other words, through Adam’s death, we all were born into this world in Adam, dead. Do you understand that? We came into this world, not in the image of God. You have people say, Well, we’re all born in the image of God. No, we’re not. We’re born in the image of Adam. And in Genesis, it tells that that when God, when, when God, or Adam and Eve, had Seth. Seth was born in the image of Adam. Adam and Eve, it says, were created in the image of God. They were created by God. Seth was born in the image of Adam. So we were not born in the image of God. When are we born in the image of God? When we’re born again. Now, when you’re born again, if any man be in Christ, he’s a new what? Creation. So who has to enable you to be born from above? God. Mom and dad gave me physical birth. God must give me spiritual birth. I can’t get that from mom and dad. So the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of one man, how much more to God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Christ, Jesus, overflow to the many. Again, the gift of God is not like the result of one man’s sin, to one man’s sin. All are dead. The gift of God is not like that. Why? Because the gift of God is given only to those who what? Receive the offer of God by faith. Death came to all men no choice. You had no choice in your spiritual death. You were born dead. So at least you can say, well, blame it on Adam. That’s the way you were born. All men are born dead. If you’re in this room today and you’re not in Christ, you are dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, you’re born that way. You didn’t have to choose it. You’re born that way. Your choice is, do I want to stay that way, or do I want life? And you have a choice on that, if you stay dead and you die, you’re going to be dead forever, separated from God, forever. If, as a result of your choice into life that God, if what you said to me is true and I we’re not talking about how good I’ve been or how bad I’ve been, because it doesn’t matter. The issue is how dead you are, not how good or bad you are, how dead are you, and Dead is dead. And if that’s true, that I’m dead spiritually, then I have a choice to either remain dead spiritually or to choose life. And that’s your choice. And whatever you choose on that is going to be where you spend eternity.” ~ Bob George

Well, let’s turn to the fifth chapter. We’re going to read through this the fifth chapter of the book of Romans, and then we’ll get into chapter six, picking up where we left off. Guys, we need to understand, and I think most of us do, but we need to understand how subtle Satan is in this world in which we live. God gave us the law and the purpose of the law, we’re told in the Bible is to show us our sinfulness so that we would turn to Christ for salvation. Now that was the purpose of the law, and it was given to us for that purpose. It’s there in front of us to show us I can’t, and in seeing that I can’t I’m automatically going to look to who can. And the answer is, Jesus. I cannot make myself holy in the sight of God. I cannot make myself righteous in the sight of God. I can do nothing to forgive my sins in the sight of God. That is something that is going to have to be done for me. I have no righteousness on my own. I have no holiness of my own. In fact, the very opposite is true of each and every one of us, is it not? And so God gave us the law to show us that truth, because man, in our ego and our pride, is too prideful to see how evil our hearts can be.

You see that sometimes, and you certainly saw it over in the war years, in wars and in battles. And we see that as people recapture, many times, World War two movies and that type of thing, you see the inhumane treatment that man can do for another person, never thinking they are capable of it, and yet we are. And so the law had to be given to to stir us up, to show us our sinfulness, for one reason only, not to beat us to death, but to show us our sinfulness, so that we would turn to the one who came to do what? Take away our sin. Now Satan takes that law that God gave to us to show us our sinfulness, and he perverts it. In other words, all evil is is a perversion of good, and that was Satan’s ploy from day one, is to take what God gave us and pervert it to have a different meaning.

I was talking to some people in Florida about the fact that we’ve talked here many times. You don’t put your faith in what God said. You put your faith in what the Word of God means. Now you wouldn’t know what it means if he didn’t say it, but your faith isn’t in what he said. Your faith is in what does it mean? It’s not in what the Word of God says is, what does the word of God mean? Satan believes in what he said. Anybody believes in what he said? If you went to every any evangelical person on the face of this earth and asked them the basic questions, do you think Jesus cried out from the cross, It is finished? Everyone would say, oh, amen, absolutely. Would you do you believe that Jesus is God? Oh, absolutely. Well, then what does that mean? If God said it’s finished, what does that mean if God said that when I hung on a cross and I died and took away the sins of the entire world, we all know that’s what he said. The issue is, what did he mean? Did he mean I forgave you, but or did he mean it’s over? When it says God was in Christ reconciling the entire world unto Himself, not counting your sins against you. We all know that’s what it says. The issue is, what does that mean? Does that mean that you’re reconciled, but you’re not reconciled? Does that mean that you’re forgiven, and then you keep asking to get forgiveness? Is that what that means? And so your faith is not in what something says. Your faith has to be placed in what does something mean. And I want to tell you something you’ll never learn what it means by studying intellectually, there’s only one way you’ll know what it means, and that is this, if the Spirit of God, who lives in you reveals to you what it means, you don’t need the Spirit of God living in you to tell you what it says. We all know what it says, but to know what it means, the Spirit of God has to reveal it to us. Now we’re told that in the Scripture, no eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor mind has conceived, of those things that God has prepared for those who love him, but it must be revealed by the Spirit. So in order for truth to be revealed as to its meaning, that is the work of the Holy Spirit of God. And if you’re not indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God, you’re not going to know what it means. And that’s why it says that natural man cannot understand spiritual things. What’s it mean? You can’t understand the meaning of spiritual things. It sounds foolish to you. So if you’re not, if you’re sitting here today and you don’t understand spiritual things, there’s a reason you’re lost. And if you’re lost, don’t try to learn more. Get saved. And how are you going to be saved? By the one who saved you coming to him, to the one who died on a cross to take away the sins of the entire world, the one who was raised from the dead in order to give you life. And without that life, living in you, you cannot understand spiritual things and to give you life and to come to life in Christ, Jesus, that’s what it takes by faith, and that’s by faith alone. Your eye can’t see, your ear can’t hear, your mind cannot conceive of those things that God has prepared for those who love them. It has to be revealed by the Spirit. And so natural man cannot understand spiritual thing. It’s foolish to him, but the spiritual man, it says, understands all things. Because why? The Spirit of God is there to reveal it to you.

And so the law was given for the purpose of showing us that we’re sinners, so that we would turn to Christ, Jesus for our salvation. Now, as we get into these passages of Scripture, you’re going to see at the end of chapter five, then we come into chapter six and chapter seven, if you and your mind will put a parentheses around chapter six and chapter seven, because that’s what it is. Bob George 13:06
So the judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation. Now, what is the condemnation of God for sin? Are we all together? What’s the condemnation of God for sin? Death. So judgment followed one sin and brought death or condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. For if by the trespass of one man, death reigned through that one man. How much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the One Man, Christ, Jesus, consequently, in other words, as a result now. Just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. Did you notice what he says that brings what? Life. Why do you need life? Because you’re dead, you’re dead. And folks, unfortunately, that is a teaching that you very seldom hear. Even in evangelical circles, we talk about your being a sinner and you need forgiveness. Nobody talks about the fact you’re dead as a hammer and you need life. But that’s the issue of salvation. The issue of salvation is not forgiveness, even though sin had to be taken away and forgiveness had to be provided for all people in order to give you eternal life. But the whole issue of salvation is life. So it’s justification that brings life for all men, for just as through the disobedience of one man, the many were made sinners. So also through the obedience of One Man, the many will be made righteous.

Now the law was added so that the trespass might increase. The law was put into effect, so that you and me will see that our trespasses are increasing, but where sin increased, Grace increased all the more. In other words, you can’t out sin the grace of God. Some of us have tried, but you can’t do it. So that just as Sin reigned in death. Now, how does sin reign in death? If you’re under the condemnation of the wages of sin, which is death, sin is reigning in your life. Do we understand, as long as you’re under the condemnation of the death penalty, sin is going to reign in your life. So also grace may reign. So just as Sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Now guys, as we go up, I want you just for a minute to look at your Bible and go up to verse 14 in chapter six here, because that’ll all tie in to what we’re dealing with. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. Now folks, again, do we all know what that says? Anyone here that doesn’t know what that says? If you don’t know what it says, we’ll read it again. Sin shall not be your master. Why? Because you’re not under the law, but under grace. Now the issue is, what does that mean? What do you think that means? If sin is your master because you’re under the law and sin shall no longer be your master because you’re not under the law, then if you’re under the law, sin is your master. Do we understand what it’s saying here? If sin shall not be your master because you’re not under the law, it means that if you are under the law, sin is your master. Are we together on that? Is there any doubt and meaning to what this is? If you’re under the law, my friends, sin is your master. Why? Because if you’re under the law, the wages of sin is what? Death. And therefore you are reigning in sin. Sin is reigning in your life, because always dangling out here is the fear of death.

And so this whole passage is trying to get us to see that you must get free from the law if you’re ever going to live in the newness of life under grace in Christ Jesus. You cannot do it under the law. You cannot be controlled by the Spirit and be controlled by Satan at the same time. And if you’re under the law, you’re controlled by Satan. Sin is your master. Who is the master of sin? Satan. When you’re under the law, you’re controlled by Satan. Now we like to pussy foot this, and we don’t think it’s politically correct to make these kind of statements, but I want to tell you, that’s what the Bible teaches, that the law has been perverted by Satan, that you’re no longer using the law. If you look at the law as that’s what God gave to me to show me I was sinful so that I would turn to Christ by faith. That’s fantastic. If you use that law for any other purpose, you’re being controlled by the one who perverted the gospel and perverted what law is, and that’s Satan. Paul was not politically correct when he talked about legalists. He said they’re perverting the gospel. And finally, well, we’ll get to that later. Let’s, let’s go into six now, chapter six. Now, why is he going into chapter six and seven, again, he’s going to answer three basic questions. In verse one, what shall we say then shall we go on sinning, and the grace may increase? Up in verse 15, what shall we say then, that we shall sin because we’re not under the law, but under grace? And then in chapter seven, what shall we say then is the law of sin? Three basic questions that obviously are going to pop into a person’s mind when they either are first introduced to the fact that you’re no longer under law, but under grace, or are adamant toward that teaching, or whatever the problem might be. He says, I’m going to address these basic questions to get them out of the way before we go on into chapter eight. There’s therefore now no condemnation awaiting those who belong to Christ. Jesus.

Shall what shall we say then? If this grace is so good at where sin increase, Grace increases all the more, and we all know how much we love God’s grace. Why? The which would should we say? Then should we just go on sinning so that Grace may increase, so the God’s grace can just keep flowing and flowing and flowing? And he says, by no means, by no means, he’s going to tell us something here, we died to sin. How can we live in it any longer? Now again, folks, let’s get back to this. Did he say you we died to sinning? He said, We died to what? Sin. What is sin? From God’s vantage point? That which is not of faith is sin, and without faith, it’s what? Impossible to please God. The root of all sinning is the sin that occurred at the in the Garden of Eden, of denying the truth that God had told us and accepting the lie of Satan. Is that, isn’t that where it all began? Isn’t that what sin is? I’m going to believe Satan and God, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Now, how did Satan deceive? He didn’t deceive by saying God didn’t say that. He said, Surely God didn’t mean this. See back to the meaning, surely he didn’t mean that, that you’ll surely die, especially Eve, since you talking about leaning on the tree that that God said, Don’t touch it. God didn’t say, don’t touch the tree. Adam told her, don’t touch it. He added to truth. I think Satan was just leaning on the on the tree, saying, See you, you don’t die. Surely he didn’t mean that. Now, folks, that is how Satan deceives you and me, every day of our lives is after one thing, and that is to try to convince you that surely God didn’t mean this. God didn’t mean this.

What shall we say? We’ll go on sinning. In other words, go on on our unbelief so the grace may increase. By no means we died to this unbelieving heart. We died to that you were born an unbeliever. Where the word repent is used in the Scripture, it’s not in relation to I used to smoke and now I don’t. Repentance was a total change of mind. I was an unbeliever. Now that does not mean that I did not give intellectual assent to Jesus, but I did not become a believer, meaning that Jesus died for me. In other words, we’ve personalized this gospel. I know he died on a tree. So does Satan. Satan knows he died on a cross. Satan knows he was raised from the dead. Hated every minute of it. So it’s not the case that Satan didn’t know those things. It’s a case they never internalized it. I knew those things too. I knew Jesus died on a cross. Believed it. How did I believe it? Well the same way I believed that a Lincoln was killed in a Ford theater. It was written down in history, and I believed it. I believed Lincoln was killed in Ford theater, do you? And and all that historical stuff. I believed all those things, but I didn’t know that it had an application to me. When it came down to the point where I realized Jesus died for me. Jesus took away my sins. Jesus was raised for me. I was dead, and Christ came to give me life. I came that you might have life. I am the way and the truth and the life. He who has the Son has life. He did that for me. And pretty soon, instead of this being a historical event, it becomes a personal event, and you say, thank you. Why do you say thank you? Because you just did something for me that I didn’t know. I knew about it, but I didn’t know you did it for me. And that’s when it becomes real.

Now, who was I before I was saved back in 1969? I was Bob George without spiritual life. I had life, but not spiritual life. I was Bob George, dead in my sins and the uncircumcision in my sinful nature. I was Bob George without the Spirit of God living in me. That’s who I was. That was my identity. When I came to Christ in 1969 I became a new creation. If any man be in Christ, he’s a what? A brand new creation. Old things have passed away. Behold, all things become new. Who am I today? Bob George with the Spirit of God living in me. Who was I before? Bob George, without the Spirit of God living in me. Where is that guy? He’s dead as a hammer. He’s gone. There is no more. Bob George, without the Spirit of God living in me, he’s gone. I’m a new creation. Now, that’s what he said. I died to sin. I died to my unbelief. Then how can I live in my unbelief any longer? How can I live as an unbeliever? How can I live anymore not knowing what God says and what God means, or not paying any attention to it? And the issue is well, you can’t. Why? Because you’re a believer today, if you’re truly born again. So I can’t live in that anymore.

Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized are placed into Christ. Now again, how did that happen? God came to live in us through Christ, Jesus. That’s Christ in you, your hope of glory. And if the Spirit of God does not live in you, what? You don’t belong to Him. So there’s only one way to be born again, and that’s to be born again of the Spirit. And that’s why you don’t be BORN AGAIN of the Spirit today and then receive the Spirit tomorrow as some people teach, that’s an impossibility. There aren’t two spirits. If you’re born again, you’re born again of the Spirit. Jesus comes by, His Spirit takes up residence in your heart. Then what did the Spirit do? The Spirit of God baptized us into the body of Christ. That’s me in Christ now. Christ in me, me in Christ. So all of us were placed into the Body of Christ. We have one head, that’s Jesus. You and I are the body. And although the body has many parts. They form one body. Do we understand that? You’re a part of the body of Christ, Jesus, here on this earth, He is your head, and you’re the body. So all of us were placed into Christ just as we were placed or baptized into his death. Now what does that mean? When I came to Christ, I accepted what Christ, Jesus did for me at the cross. How did he pull that off? He had to die for the forgiveness of my sins. He had to take the punishment that was due to me on himself. And there he who knew no sin became sin for me so that I could become the righteousness of God in him.
