Classic Christianity – Book of Romans P27 (12-04-24)

We Were Set Free From the Law of Sin and Death to Be Slaves to Righteousness

~ “What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? Never may it be! Do you not know that to whom you yield yourselves as slaves for obedience, you are slaves to him whom you obey, whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you who were slaves of sin have now become obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching to which you were committed. And having been set free from sin, you have become slaves to righteousness.” Romans 6:15-18

To understand what being a slave to righteousness about requires being born of the Holy Spirit of God. Being a slave for righteousness is NOT about what we do or don’t do, but it is a matter of placing faith in the faithful One of God to complete the work He began in you. It’s His righteousness that we are slaves to. It’s His body that lives in us if we are a child of God. Prior to being a slave to righteousness as a child of God, we were slaves to sin and death. But now that righteousness has come, we are slaves to His Life living in and through Us. He wants us to trust in Him for everything today. He wants us to depend on the Holy Spirit for ALL Truth. He has set us free from the law of sin and death to be living eternally in His Life, living through Us. And those without the Holy Spirit of God cannot understand what this means, because they do not have the Spirit of God living in them to teach them the true meaning of this. They will lean on their own understanding of what it means, thinking they can do the righteous requirements of God themselves. And they will become all puffed up in pride, thinking how good they are acting. They are the hypocrites that are acting all goody goody.

So don’t live as though you are a slave to sin anymore. Walk in faith from first to last. Be who you are, a child of God controlled by God Himself, to be used for the things He has for you to do. For we are the body of Christ, and God Himself lives in us. And because we are the temple of God, allow the temple of God to be used for Righteousness by Him. Don’t walk around in unbelief. Stop believing the lies of Satan. Start sharing Truth with people. Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and understanding, and He will give it with GREAT abundance without finding fault. Ask Him to want to want to do something today.

Luke 18:18,19
18 And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, having done what, will I inherit eternal life?”
19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good, except God alone.

~ “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” 1 John 5:12

~ Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one believing in Me, even if he should die, he will live. And everyone living and believing in Me shall never die, to the age. Do you believe this?” John 11:25,26

~ What then will we say? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Never may it be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or are you unaware that as many as have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised up out from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have become united in the likeness of His death, certainly also we will be of the resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, so that the body of sin might be annulled, that we are no longer enslaved to sin. For the one having died has been freed from sin.

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised up out from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer rules over Him. For that which He died, He died to sin once for all; but that which He lives, He lives to God. So also you, consider yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but living to God in Christ Jesus.

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, in order to obey its desires. Neither yield your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but yield yourselves to God, as living out from the dead, and your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will not rule over you, for you are not under law, but under grace.

What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? Never may it be! Do you not know that to whom you yield yourselves as slaves for obedience, you are slaves to him whom you obey, whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you who were slaves of sin have now become obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching to which you were committed. And having been set free from sin, you have become slaves to righteousness.

I speak in human terms on account of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you yielded your members in bondage to impurity and to lawlessness unto lawlessness, so now yield your members in bondage to righteousness unto sanctification.

For when you were slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness. What fruit, therefore, did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now, having been set free from sin, and having become slaves to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:1-23

Pray to God:

Do you really want to know the WHOLE Truth of what is going on today?

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the world today and give me the wisdom to know the truth and identify the lies of the devil. Thank you God.”

~ “Thanks be to God that you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. Now, does that mean that you were without teaching? No, you were you had teaching, and you wholeheartedly obeyed it. If you were taught under the law were you wholeheartedly trying to obey the teaching that you were entrusted to? How many of you were under the law, wholeheartedly trying to obey the law? Let me see your hands. How many of you were successful? What happened to the hands? But you wholeheartedly were trying, weren’t you? I mean, you were giving it a whack law. I’m supposed to obey the law, Lord. I’ll give it a whack, and you’re out there trying. But what did you find out about trying to obey the law? We’ll study that in Romans seven. The same I want to do, I don’t do, and the things I don’t want to do, I do anyway. And so what do we do? We pick the ones we can do. I can go to church on Saturday instead of Sunday. I can do that one. Or if it was vice versa, I could do that one. And and, you know, if nobody sees why, I cannot drink, and nobody smells. I cannot smoke, all this kind of stuff. I pick the ones that I can do, and those are the ones I’m going to concentrate on. And that’s what we do. We concentrate on those ones. But you see, God gave us 10, and when you look at the law, no man has ever lived in obedience to the law. And James said that if you kept the entire law, and yet violated in one point, you violated how much of it? All of it, all of it, so that that puts us all where we belong. So he said, You hope, even though, when you were a slave to sin, you were wholeheartedly trying to obey the teaching to which you were entrusted.” ~ Bob George

Bob George 0:29
So when people tell you, if you keep doing this or this or this, you’re going to go to hell, that’s a lie, because no man will be held accountable for his sins when there is no law. And the law has been put aside to those who are believers, the law has been put aside so that you can now be led internally by the Holy Spirit of God who lives in you. Is that good news folks? I agree that’s worth applauding for it. So he’s saying here, because of this truth, do not offer parts of your body as instruments of wickedness. Rather, offer yourself as those who have been brought from life to death, and offer parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness, For sin shall not be your master, because you’re not under the law, but you’re under Grace. Now, folks, as we talked about last week. If sin is not your master because you’re not under the law, then when you are under the law, sin is your master. Do we understand that? Sin is your master when you’re under the law, and the only way you’re going to be freed from being mastered by sin is to become mastered by him. You can be mastered by sin, or you can be mastered by him, and there’s nothing in between. When you refuse to be mastered by him, you are automatically being mastered by sin. Do we understand that? There’s no alleyway, there’s just a fence, and on one side is him, the other side is sin, and you got a choice as to who you’re going to be mastered by him or by sin.

Now let’s pick up in verse 15. Again, we’ve got questions here, and as I mentioned to you last week, in between chapter five and chapter eight, you got a parenthesis. It’s chapter six and seven. Chapter Five literally goes right into chapter eight in thought. But Paul paused here and said, I’m going to answer some questions in chapter six and seven. I’m going to answer these questions before we go on to the good news that is in chapter eight, which, of course, begins, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. And so what we’re doing here is he’s pausing to answer three basic questions. First one, in the first verse of chapter six, what shall we say? Shall we go on sinning? If this grace is as good as you’re saying, Paul, well, then should we go on sinning so that God’s grace could just be known more? In other words, the more we sin, the more his grace is going to be talked about. And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Talking about God’s grace. So let’s just go up and sin up a storm so God’s grace will be shown to the whole world. And that was one question that was asked.

Now we’re coming to number two. What then shall we say? You’ve just gotten through saying that we’re no longer under the law. Sin shall not be your master because you’re not under the law. I don’t know how much more clearer it can be that you’re not under the law than that. And yet you have entire denominations that teach people that they under the law. Do we not? And legalistic as can be and put you under the law, and therefore keep you under the power of sin, and then beat the daylights out of you every Sunday for sinning. What shall we say then, shall we go on sinning? You just got through sin. We go on sinning so the grace may abound. Now we’re sin. Shall we go on sinning? Because we’re not under the law, but under grace. In other words, how many people have said, with this kind of teaching a grace teaching, oh, you’re teaching people to have a license to sin. I’ve told people I don’t need a license to sin. I sin quite well without a license. Have you ever noticed anyone not sinning, who’s under the law? I mean, if you ever known anybody under the law that never sinned, but it’s kind of like I’m under the law, I don’t sin. You’re under grace, and you do. I got news for you. It says, All have sinned. It’s just whether you want to be mastered by sin. If you want to be mastered by sin, keep yourself under the law. If you want to be mastered by God, keep your self under grace. So shall we sin? Because we’re not under the law, but under grace? Say by no means. In other words, it’s kind of like saying that’s a dumb question. Don’t you know that when you offer yourself to someone to obey Him as slaves, you’re slaves to the one whom you obey. Don’t you know that? When you offer yourself to someone as a slave, you are obligated to obey the one you offer yourself to. Is that right or wrong? Now, folks, when you’re a slave, you have no rights. When you’re a slave, you live under the control of the master. You really have no option. You are just there to obey the master, and he’s saying when you and I offer ourselves to someone to obey your slaves, to the one whom you obey, whether you’re slaves to sin which leads to death, or whether you’re a slave to obedience which leads to righteousness. But thanks be to God that though you used to be, and this is used to be, before you were saved, you used to be slaves to sin. How many can testify to that, that before you were saved, you were a slave to sin? You may as well all testify to it, because the Bible just got through saying you were a slave to sin. So you don’t need to think over, was I or wasn’t I?

Thanks be to God that you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. So he said, You hope, even though, when you were a slave to sin, you were wholeheartedly trying to obey the teaching to which you were entrusted.

Now, folks, you can grow up in a home with good teaching, and you can grow up in a home with bad teaching, and unfortunately, in this day and age where there’s divorce and the split of homes, you can have one parent teaching nonsense, another parent trying to teach truth, and that poor kid in the middle is bombarded with double mindedness, and he becomes totally unstable in all ways. There’s no consistency in what’s being taught. And so therefore we have to realize that as parents, if you’re going to, if you if you’re if you’re not going to get along with each other and you’re going to split, for God’s sakes, become committed to teaching the child the same moral values, and don’t have one over there teaching people to go live like the devil and the other one teaching them to go to church and to and to obey the things of God, because that creates what the Bible calls a double minded man and makes you unstable in all ways. Get at least consistent for the sake of your children. So he says, we go out and we wholeheartedly obey the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. But you now in Christ, you’ve been set free from sin. You have been set free from being a slave to false teaching. Do we realize that? Why? Because we have the Spirit of God living in us, and what is the purpose of the Spirit of God living in us? To lead us into what? All truth. And if the Spirit of God lived doesn’t live in you, you don’t have a clue what truth is. You just leaning on your own understanding. It says, acknowledging him and he’ll direct your paths. Quit leaning on your own understanding. But if you don’t have the Spirit of God living in you, you have no choice but to lean on your own understanding. And so you’ve been set free from that. We now have a plumb line in our life, folks, a plumb line where we can go to and know precisely whether the line is straight or not.

We’re talking about the fact that we have been set free from having to believe lies. We do not have to believe the lie of Satan. We don’t have to. We can choose to, can’t we? But we don’t have to. Where before you knew Christ, you had no option. He told you to do something. You just went and did it. Satan comes along and he says tells you things, things that are contrary to what you know to be true. Comes along and tells you things that you know full well are harmful to your body. That’s the temple of the Holy Spirit of God. You know full well, it’s harmful to you. But he tells you how much fun it is, or he tells you all kinds of stuff. And so we pour things in our veins, and we pour things in our mouth, and we pour things all kinds of deals. We suck smoke down our lungs, we get into booze, we get into drugs, we get into all kinds of things that we know full well are harmful to our bodies. Who are we listening to? You’re not listening to God. God is saying your body’s the temple of the Holy Spirit of God. Don’t treat it that way, but we do. So he’s saying to us that you’ve been set free from having to do that. So there’s no such thing is, I don’t have any control over this. Yes, you do. Yeah, you do. Do you know folks that you can do anything that you want to do, anything you want to do you can do, if you want to quit something, you can quit it. Before I came to the Lord, I used to smoke like a furnace. I just couldn’t wait to get another cigarette. Then, if it was late at night and I ran out, I just went and got some. Now, Amy asked me to go get groceries. I’d have thought that she was killing me, punishing me in some way, but you could go get cigarettes. And on the day that I realized that those cigarettes controlled my life, I didn’t do it because of health, because I was on a 200 year plan back then, they controlled me. And the reason I knew they controlled me is I couldn’t quit. And the reason I came to the realization those things control me, I pitched them in a waste basket and never picked another one up. I joined a health club. I quit drinking booze, and I quit drinking coffee for a month. Just Just a month. Yeah, because every time I had a cup of coffee and wanted a cigarette, every time I had a drink, wanted a cigarette, so I cut out everything that you equated with having a cigarette. I had no problem at all, and I smoked three packs a day many times. That’s a lot. That’s a lot of puffing. Of course, people say you weren’t smoking the cigarette smoked. You were just a sucker. But the issue is, don’t say to me you can’t quit, because I know you can, and I quit as a lot as a non Christian, so don’t tell me you can’t quit. It’s the issue you don’t want to.

Because you bought the lie that you’re going to gain weight. Isn’t that the big one? Going to gain weight? What are you going to do with your hands? That was a big was for me. What am I going to do with my hands and all of that kind of stuff comes up. All that talk comes from Satan, not from God. When God says, Would you walk into a church building in here and light up a cigarette in the middle of the service? And the answer, Oh, no. Well, why? This isn’t a church. It’s just a building. Your body is the church. Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit of God. And so what he’s I’m not down on smoking. I’m just saying this is just a good example of how Satan can lie to you, and the way he does lie to you. You can do anything you want to do. You want to quit. You can quit. Want to quit drinking. You can quit drinking. No big deal. Want to drink coffee? I quit for a month or two. Whatever you want to do you can do. So don’t say you can’t do it, because God lives in you to give the power to do it. It’s not the fact that we can’t, it’s the fact that we won’t. You. Now I realize today that I’m meddling, but chapter six and seven, meddle.

Okay, you have been set free from having to obey the commands of Satan, and you, instead have become a slave to righteousness. In other words, I want to do what God tells me to do. I’ve asked a person, sometime, will you pray to God to make me want to want to? Because I’ve talked to people say, I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to quit. Well, will you ask God to make you want to want to? Well, yeah, I’ll do that. And they pray that, Lord make me want to want to and a few weeks later they’re back and say, I’ve quit. So you got a wanter, and your wanter is either under the control of Satan or it’s under the control of God, but you got to wanter. And so he said, you’ve been set free from sin, and you become slaves to righteousness. Now I put these in human terms, because we are weak in our natural selves, we have this natural part of us that is weak and subject to error.

Just as you used to offer parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever increasing wickedness, wickedness, ever increasing wickedness. Have you ever noticed how sin doesn’t go backwards, it just goes forward. Have you noticed that in life, sin never gets less. You don’t sin and say, I’m not going to do that anymore. You don’t kiss a girl for the first time twice, and the next time, say, I think I’ll just make it once. You go for three and four, it increases with desire. In human terms, he says, because of our natural selves, just he used to offer parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever increasing wickedness. So you used to do that. Now offer parts of your body in slavery to righteousness, leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. Righteousness had no control over you and me when we were lost, did it? None at all. It would have been a foreign thought to be controlled by righteousness. I don’t even want to be controlled by righteousness. I want to be controlled by what I’m having fun doing. What benefit it says, Did you reap? Now, folks, here’s the key to this. What benefit Did you reap at that time from the things that you look back on and are now ashamed of? Is that true or not, you ever look back on your life and are ashamed of the things that you’ve done? Can anyone here tell me? No, no, don’t tell me. Is there anyone here that does not have something in their life that maybe they’re ashamed of? Maybe some of you do, I don’t know. But the issue is, when you look back on it, you say, what caused you to do this shameful thing? There’s one simple thing. I was listening to the voice of Satan instead of the voice of God. Now, there can be circumstances surrounding that, and there can be things where you say, Yeah, I understand how that took place. When the final analysis, what was going on was you were listening to the the to the voice of Satan instead of the voice of God. And it said, what benefit was it? Did you have from that?

I look back on the days and my wild days of lost person, there was no benefit to that at all. It was shameful, shameful things that we do. And he’s saying, You don’t have to submit yourself to that anymore. What benefit did you reap? Things you’re ashamed of, and those things resulted in death, but now you’ve been set free from sin. You’ve been set free from having to obey the shameful lust that is within you, and you become slaves to God, and the benefits that you reap is holiness, being set apart, being able to walk with a clear conscience. I don’t think there’s probably a more valuable possession that you and I could have than a clear conscience, do you? And the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ, Jesus, or through Christ, Jesus, our Lord eternal life.

Now he goes in Romans seven. Do you not know brothers that I’m speaking to men who know the law. I’m not speaking to a group of people that do not know the law. I’m speaking to authorities because the Hebrew world at that time were authorities on the law, and if they weren’t, there was a group there that certainly let you know what the law said and what it meant to them. Don’t you know, as a person who knows the law, that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives. In other words, the law has authority over you as long as you’re alive. For example, by law, by the Hebrew law, and the interpretation of the Hebrew law, a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive. Now, this was a Hebrew law, you are bound to your husband as long as you as you’re alive, but if her husband dies, she’s released from that law of marriage. So then if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she’s called an adulteress, but if her husband dies, she’s released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man. Now he said, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ that you might belong to another. You died to the law. You were born into this world married to the law, joined to it, married to it. When you came into this world from your mom and dad, from your mother’s womb, you came in joined to the law. What was the purpose of the law? To show you your sinfulness so that you could that’s what baptism is, die to the law, leave the law in the grave and be raised to marry another Christ, Jesus, the Lord, and become the Bride of Christ. So he said, You died to the law so that the body of Christ, you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead in order that we might bear fruit to God when we were controlled by the flesh, these sinful passions that were aroused by the law. So the passions are stimulated and aroused by the law that says, Don’t do something. All you have to do to get a kid to want to do something is what tell him don’t do it. And you got somebody headed toward it. That’s the power of sin, is in the law. Is that right or wrong? And so these sinful passions, it says, are aroused by the law. Now the Bible, that’s what the Bible is saying. Here, they are aroused by the law. Now we and man took the law and said, No, no, this law is not to show your sinfulness. This law is a method of showing you how righteous you are. And we don’t realize we’re keeping people under the power of sin by keeping them under the law that stirs up and arouses sinful passions within us. They were at work in our bodies so that we bore the fruit of death. But now by dying to what once bound us, and what is that? What bound us? The law you die to, what bound you, what bound you, the law. We have been released from the law so that we serve in a new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code. Folks, can you trust that? Can you trust the Spirit of God who lives in you to lead you and to guide you into truth? Can you trust the Spirit of God who lives in you to give you discernment as to what is right and what is wrong? Can you trust the Spirit of God living in you to make you sober minded? And you know, if you’re sober minded, you’re not silly minded. And there are some people that make the Christian world into silliness, silly stuff. You see it on television every day. Silly Christianity.

Does anyone in here believe that God knocks you down in the spirit? Where do you find that in the Bible? That’s silly stuff, that’s man made silly stuff to make you think that I got some kind of a power that you don’t have because you’re not knocking me over. I’ve never seen anyone slay Benny Hinn in the Spirit, he just slays you because I got this special power that I can blow on you. That’s all gotta do. Maybe he’s got bad breath. I don’t know what the story is. I can just go touch you in the head and you fall over into the people with the gift of catching silly, silly stuff. Nothing spiritual about that at all. And if you had an ounce of discernment in you, you would know that’s silly. That is not in the Bible. The Spirit of God didn’t come to slay you. The Spirit of God came to give you life. And there’s a lot of silliness that goes on in Christianity. When I look at the Christian world it’s in terrible shape, because the ones that aren’t being silly are practicing legalism and bearing people under the power of sin that’s in the law. And there’s very few people today, unfortunately, who are up proclaiming the fullness of the grace of God to enable people to go free in Christ, Jesus, there’s nothing controlling with this, folks. When you’re preaching grace to people, you may as well forget if you had an ounce in your mind of ever wanting to control somebody, you may as well forget it, because God didn’t mean for you and me to control people. He meant for the Spirit to control people. And if a man wants to control somebody, don’t teach the grace of God to them, because you can’t control people who are under grace. Only people under the law can you control. And so to me, as we have the privilege, I believe, a meeting on a regular basis in this congregation. And what I’ve tried to do for 40 some years, and I’ve been in Christ, Jesus, is to teach truth to people. I haven’t tried to control people, because I have no desire to control people. I’m not trying there, trying to tell you how to live your life, or how not to live your life. I’m here to say what the scripture has to say in regard to living your lives. And then that’s between you and God. That’s not between you and me. And if God can’t get to you, for darn sure, I’m not going to be able to that’s why people have accountability groups. And if I can’t be accountable to God, how am I going to be accountable to you. And so the issue is that if we will sit and teach the Word of God without being fearful that maybe it’s going to contradict your bias or contradict your plan or your promotional objectives, and to teach the Word of God as it is written, you may not be the most popular in the world. We may not gather the largest of crowds in the world, but I’ll tell you, I believe you’ve got a bunch of people who understand what truth is.

Stand on the firmness of truth. Don’t keep going back and forth. Thank Him that the forgiveness issue is settled.

Let’s pray together:

  • Lord Jesus,
  • I thank you for taking away my sins on the cross,
  • never ever to see them again.
  • Having done that, I now thank you for giving me eternal life,
  • through your resurrection.
  • I now receive that life.
  • And I am going stand in the fact that I am a child of the living God.
  • In Jesus Holy name I pray.
  • Amen

All believers are now brothers and sisters in Christ.
