What Good is The Law? What is the Purpose of The Law?
~ It’s important that we get a handle on what the Law is for and what it is Not for. One of the callers on Bob’s show had a number of questions in regards to the law. And those same type of questions go on today. Some people state that the law is for Christians today in order that God would be pleased with a person if they obeyed the law. Others believe that the Holy Spirit helps you to obey the law. Others think that God is somehow disappointed with you when you disobey the law. Nothing could be further from the truth. Faith is what pleases God. And without faith, it is impossible to please God.
If you are still under the law today, the Word of God declares you are under a curse. So, if you are a child of God through faith, it says you are no longer under the law. So as a child of God, why in the world would you want to place yourself back under the law? And if someone wants to be under the law, then maybe they are not saved in the first place. And why would any person that claims to be a child of God want to listen to someone and then promote anyone teaching the lie of ongoing law keeping? It’s no different than teaching the lie of ongoing forgiveness. For if they are so far off in this one area, you can bet they are teaching other lies too. It’s because in these last days people are bringing to themselves what their itching ears want to hear. For many are professors of Christ, but they are NOT possessors of Christ Jesus. Satan has them convinced they are saved when in reality they are dead as a doorknob. They are great pretenders, yet never have exercised faith. And faith is drawing proper conclusions based on the word of God says, not what man has to say.
~ For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” Galatians 3:10
~ Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. Romans 3:19,20
~ Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator. A mediator, however, implies more than one party; but God is one.
Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.
Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. Galatians 3:19-25
~ “Look Smith, you’ve got to take a look. You’ve got to see what does the Scripture have to say the you asked the question, What good is the law? And the Scripture answers that in detail Romans 3:19 through 20. whatever the law says it says to those who are under the law. So if you’re still thinking that your acceptance or rejection from God is predicated upon your law performance, you’re still under the Law. And it says so the law, whatever whatever it says, it says to you who are under the law, so that your mouth may be silenced. In other words, you shut your mouth because you’re held accountable to God. If you’re under the law, you’re under the accountability of God and therefore, no one will be declared righteous in His sight by observing the law. Rather it’s through the law we become conscious of sin. So what was the purpose of the law? To make us conscious of sin. What for? So that we would turn to Christ for our forgiveness, taking away our sin never to see that again, and the new life that we received through His resurrection. So you see what has happened, it’s like a hammer, people have made a hammer with the intention of putting it in a carpenter’s hand and letting him build a house for you. You can also put that hammer into the hands of a murderer, and he’ll hit you in the head and kill you with it. It’s not the fall of the hammer. It’s whose hands it’s in. And so it says that we know the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is not made for righteous for people who are born again, but it’s made for law breakers, rebels for the ungodly, and all of those types of things. And so, one more passage of scripture, and then you’re gonna have to make a decision Galatians 3:19 through 24. What then was the purpose of the law? So it asked the question for you didn’t it Smith, it said, What was the purpose of the law? It was added because of Smith’s sins. Until. Now when you have an until it’s a before and after. So the law was added because of your sins, until the seed that’s Jesus, to whom the promise referred had come. But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin. So that what was promised being given through faith in Christ Jesus might be given to those who believe. Now, before this faith came, in other words, before you placed your faith in Christ Jesus, or until you place your faith in Christ Jesus, you are held prisoner, by the law, locked up until the faith in Jesus should be revealed to you. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ, so that we might be justified by faith. No man will ever be justified through obedience to the law. The law can’t make you righteous. The law can’t justify you. The law can’t give you life. The only thing the law can do is to kill you. That’s the wages of sin under the law is death. And the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. So the law is a mirror you look into a mirror. It shows you your face is dirty, but you can’t wash your face in the mirror. Yes. So that’s where Jesus taps you on the shoulder and says Smith turn around. What did you see in the mirror? I saw my face was dirty. Are you willing for me to cleanse you? Yes, I am. Now the mirror has done its work. And Jesus has done his work, but you cannot wash your face in the mirror. I gotcha. Okay, so the purpose of the law, show you are sinner, turn to Christ. You’re no longer under the law. You’re free from it. Leave it where it belongs. You don’t go to Mount Sinai at all. You go to the empty tomb. Right there rejoice in the resurrected Christ that has come to live within you.” ~ Bob George
