Everything is Permissible, Not Everything is Profitable

~ “Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29

When a person is in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is thus living in them, there is something to be said for being a straight talker, but not for blurting out profanity laced speech. And we all know what is considered to be unwholesome talk, without having to define it. And the Holy Spirit will point that out to the person also. And it depends on the language used too. German unwholesome talk would not have any significance to the hearer if they only knew English. With that being said, how much sense does it make to spend your day cussing up a storm in whatever language, and then say that you are a child of God to those around you? Is it permissible to do that? Sure. Is it profitable to the body of Christ, or those that are hearing about the gospel from this person? Of course not.

It would be like the person that flaunts their smoking (of various things), and says that is good for them, while at the same time sharing the gospel message to others. Is it permissible to do that? Sure. Is it profitable to the body of Christ? Of course not.

It’s not profitable, because it has an appearance of evil. And it is not good to have an appearance of evil, no matter how much a person wants to justify it. Those kinds of things do NOT build up the body of Christ, and people that insist upon doing them, the majority of the body of Christ will turn them off. It doesn’t sit well with their spirit. So consider others above yourself. Make every effort to build up others, and not with any unwholesome talk, or other things with an appearance of evil.

Additionally, if a person wants to make some key points in the word of God, and this person is doing this or that in an appearance of evil, the rest of the body of Christ will not be willing to listen to them. It’s a turn off. Why would anyone be willing to listen to a person that is using unwholesome talk, or smoking up a storm?

“Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible,” but not everything is edifying. 1 Corinthians 10:23

Consider having a Bible study yourself and teaching one or two others the Truth of the word of God. Those with ears, they will want to hear. We have many excellent Bible study books that are very easy to use that involve simply reading the word of God and answering the questions provided. The answers themselves are right there in the word of God.

~ “Yeah. Well, Terris, it’s obvious that a person like that. It isn’t that a born again Christian cannot use profanity. It’s not that they cannot think profanity. And as far as God is concerned, if you can think it, why it’s the same as saying it. You know, language is a very strange thing. You could say a dirty word to me in German, and I would even know what you’re talking about. You could teach me that word, and I could say it and has no meaning at all to me, but if I said it to a German they’d fall off the stool. So it’s language is strange in that way. The issue is that it’s not that we cannot do it. It’s the fact that if we’re into a situation of justifying it or enjoying it. Something is wrong with us, because if we do use or use harsh language or that type of thing, the Holy Spirit of God is always there saying, you know, Bob, was that consistent with who you are, that you’re a child of God and you’re this and that, and is that language commensurate with what I’ve made you into. And you have to really, they’re somewhat remorseful with it of saying that’s really idiotic. I think the flesh gets in. I have no idea about this guy, but if he’s justifying that, and I think if any Christian is justifying any sin, in other words, I don’t ever want to call what God calls sin something else, right? And I don’t want to justify sin or to rationalize it at all. I’m going to call it what God calls it. I may go ahead and call it what God calls it, and go ahead and do it, but I’m not going to deny what God calls something. I’m going to call it the same thing. And if I’m not, there’s something wrong with my relationship with truth. God is truth, and there’s some relationship to truth on that. So I it’s not that we cannot sin. It’s the fact that, as a child of God, we’re not going to be happy with it.” ~ Bob George
