Throw Off The Sin of Unbelief, The Sin That so Easily Entangles
~ In chapter 11 of the Book of Hebrews, we have been given the examples of faith in that chapter. And we are quick to discount what faith really is. We have actually forgotten that faith is responding properly to truth. God has given us truth at each point along the way and it is culminated with the Spirit of Truth living in each and every believer. Yet we are quick to even discount the Holy Spirit and end up not trusting Him for truth either. We tend to allow our flesh to guide us instead of the Spirit of God. And therein lies the problem. For Satan wants us to focus on our flesh and the teaching of men instead of the word of God. We need to start trusting in God to explain the word of God to each of us and what it means. It’s so important to remember that it requires the Holy Spirit to explain the meaning of the word of God to us today.
~ Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. “Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed. Hebrews 12:1-13
~ “Yeah. Elias, what, bring our audience up to date on that in. In those passages of Scripture you’re dealing with in Hebrews with the fact that your struggle against sin you’ve not resisted to the point of shedding your blood? Have you forgotten the word of encouragement that addresses you as sons? Now here’s a word of encouragement that he’s saying. And what he does is quotes out of Proverbs 3:11 12. The only problem with that is as it is recorded, in this New Testament, a quote out of Proverbs, here’s what Proverbs says, My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, or do not resent his rebuke. Because the Lord’s disciplines those he loves, as a father, the son he delights in. Now, when and I’m sure you You know how some of these things about scriptural interpretation, this type of thing when the Septuagint and are you familiar with the Septuagint was? I’ve heard of it. Okay, the Septuagint was what was written, probably 400 years BC, work of translating the Old Testament from Hebrew into Greek. So by the time of Jesus day, all of the Old Testament was translated into Greek, Hebrew is, is a very kind of a language that is not a detailed type of language. The reason I think that the New Testament was written in Greek is because it was the most detailed language that has ever been created. And so it’s explicit. And so there’s, it’s very difficult to make mistakes, if you understand the Greek in regard to what it’s meaning. And so the Septuagint when it translated this, this word or this verse in Proverbs, translated it as punishment. It came from a word of scourging. In the Old Testament, in the Hebrew language, the word scourging represented a person to deeply Inquire within, in other words, to deeply get to the bottom of something to inquire deeply a part of a discipline to inquire the discipline to a person as a father, the sun he delights in. And so it’s through translation, and through change of words. as we well know how words will change through the through time. It came out in this in this 12 Chapter, really misquoting what what the Proverbs is, when it says the Lord disciplines those he loves and he punishes everyone. He accepts as a son. After Chapter, Verse five, that have you forgotten the word of encouragement that addresses you as sons, as addresses you as sons? And then that passage in Proverbs is talking as a father deals with lovingly a father, the son he delights in. And so it’s just it, how those things happened? I don’t know. But I do know that if we, if somebody misquoted scripture to us we’d say you’re not doing very good misquoting scripture. And yet, that’s a misquote of Scripture. And according to the original, that was dealing with the Father lovingly dealing with the son getting translated in the Septuagint punishment, and then getting translated in this as punishment. I think you have to go back to the source in order to get the true meaning of it.” ~ Bob George
