Classic Christianity – Book of Hebrews P07 (09-12-23)

Jesus, The Creator of All Things, is Superior to The Angels

~ We are still in the first chapter of the Book of Hebrews, and as we have mentioned in the past, details matter on everything. The angels got to witness creation. We learn that through other areas of scripture. The angels were created by Jesus to begin with, and they were present at the time of God creating everything else into existence. And we know that Jesus Himself is the Creator of everything seen and unseen. We need to understand that Jesus, was always God to begin with and still is God. Jesus, God became flesh, and dwelt among man, and know this Jesus will return again to walk among Man again someday. In the meantime, God sent His Spirit, the Holy Spirit to live in each and every believer in Christ Jesus. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, is the same Spirit that raises you and me from the dead when we place faith in Him. And by the way, we have the wisdom of God to be our wisdom for us. Though most live in the energy of their flesh, and thus they believe in the wisdom of man instead of the Wisdom of God.

But lean not on our own understanding of things (All Things), but trust in God through His Holy Spirit to show you the true meaning of everything we have going on today. For He will straighten out your paths for you and will provide you the Wisdom and Knowledge of God.

~ For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. Colossians 1:16

~ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. John 1:1-3

~ In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

~ Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

~ “Let’s open our time together in a word of prayer. Father, we thank you for the Lord Jesus Christ. In the final analysis, that’s just about all we have. We walk on this face of the earth and desire acceptance and love, and we think we’re going to find it in people. And we don’t. Even among our brothers and sisters in Christ, it’s very rare where we truly find true love and acceptance. But in the midst of that, our eyes need to be turned afresh and again, to you and to you alone. Because it’s in you, where that need is fed. It is in you and you alone, that are able to say, I love you and accept you. I’m not through with you, but I love you and accept you. I wish Father and pray that that attitude would prevail in each and every one of our hearts. And I pray Father, that as we continue to look today, into this marvelous book that you’ve given us, that you will allow us to see, not only your glory, but our total pride and arrogance, as we walk on the face of this earth, and to humbleness once again and afresh. While we pray in Christ’s name, Amen.” ~ Bob George

Well, let’s turn to the book of Hebrews, chapter one. Still. In the past, God spoke to our forefathers and through the prophets at many times, and in various ways. But that’s the contrast. And these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. We have talked about the fact in our prior lessons on the book of Hebrews, as we started out that the contrast between the fact that God spoke to us through the prophets, and in many various ways, dreams, visions, all kinds of various and sundry ways, prior to Christ Jesus, but contrast in these last days, he has spoken to us through Christ Jesus. I asked some people the other day, do you believe that everything that God wants you to know about God He has revealed to us in the Scripture? And the answer is why, of course. Well, then do you believe that everything that he wanted you to know about you was revealed in the Scripture? And the answer came back, Yes. Well, if that’s so then why do we need to go outside of the scripture to find out about God, we would call that cultic. And not think that it’s called cultic to go outside of the Word of God to try to find out about us. So everything that God wanted me to know about you, and about me, is in the Word of God, just like everything that he wanted me to know about him is in the Word of God. And again, I say, it’s very strange to me that we consider those who tried to go outside of the Word of God to discover God, we call them cultic, but do not call it cultic to those who continually insist on going outside of the Word of God to find out about us. Everything that God wanted us to know about him and us is contained in the Word of God. And anything that we go outside of that is merely seeking the brilliance of man, which God said is but foolishness to him. And so in the days past, he revealed himself to us through the word of God, through the prophets, various ways, but contrast and these last days, he spoken to us by his Son, through whom he appointed heir of all things and through whom he made the universe.

Now, it goes here to explain that the Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being. In other words, everything that you’re going to know about God is contained in Christ, nothing different. And all that he wanted you to know about God is contained in Christ Jesus, that He wanted you to know more he would have, he would have given Christ more to give us. Had he wanted you and me to know less he You would have taken some away from what Christ gave us. Everything that we need to know about God is contained in Christ Jesus, a total reflection of God himself, on this earth. Now it says after he had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. We talked about last week about the fact that the importance of this is after he had provided purification for sins. In other words, it was over. And the sin issue has been dealt with once and for all. And when he did that, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. In other words, he has now declared superior over all things. Now it says he became as much superior to the angels as his name He has inherited is superior to theirs. And we’re going to see and study today and for the next few weeks, about this subject of angels. Now I say, why would the book of Hebrews be talking about this type of thing? Well, because there are people who said that angels were superior to Christ, there were people who said that revelation is superior to Christ, or my experience is superior to that of Christ. In other words, don’t confuse me with facts My mind’s already made up. And my experience is what determines right or wrong. Said, no, no, Christ is superior to Revelation, Christ is superior to angels. Then you had those that said, Christ was a prophet like that of Moses, and Moses was probably superior to Christ. And, no Christ is superior to Moses, Christ is superior over the priesthood, He’s superior over the sacrificial system. He’s God, He’s superior over all things. And so we’re going to see the author of the book of Hebrews clicking off these things that people sometimes think that is superior to that of Christ. And he starts with that of the angels. So he said, to which of the angels? Did God ever say, You are my son? Today, I have become your father. It’s like saying, Do you ever see it recording in the scripture where God said that to an angel? Or again, I will be his father and he will be my son? Do you ever remember reading anyplace in the scripture where he said that in regard to angels? No. Or again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, Let all of the angels worship him. Be a little strange that If angels were superior to Christ Jesus that that statement would certainly be made. In speaking of the angels, he said, he makes the angels winds and his servants flames of fire. In other words, an angel being a spiritual being, you can’t see it. Christ, you can see he took upon himself our flesh and blood, he came to this earth. He showed us physically what God was like in the flesh. But he says about the Son, he says, Your throne, oh, God will last forever and forever. And righteousness, will be the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness, and hated wickedness. Therefore, God, Your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy. He also says, and again talking about his Son, in the beginning, oh, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth. And the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain. They will all wear out like a garment. In other words, this world we’re looking at here gonna wear out, like a garment, you will roll them up like a robe, like a garment, they will be changed, but you remain the same, and your years will never end. To which of the angels did God ever say, set at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet? Are not the angels, ministering spirits? Set to serve those who will inherit salvation? Well, I don’t know about you. But it’s been a long time since I can remember. In fact, I can hardly ever remember ever hearing very much about angels. We hear about it. We have all kinds of ideas about them. But what do we really know about them, as far as what God has to say about these beings called Angels? And as much as the book of Hebrews spends quite a bit of time talking about that, why we’re also going to spend a little bit of time talking about it.

Angel Those are mentioned in the Scripture around 273 times in 34, of the different books of the Bible. In the prophet in the prophecies concerning Christ Messiahship, His prophecies concerning His Messiahship were around 300 times, angels 277 times, not that these things are that important, but I believe we need to understand that it’s an important subject. And it’s something that God wants us to know about and to understand something about in regard to our understanding of God’s creation. I think many times the importance of this at least is I’ve gotten into it and looked at it is we have a tendency to get tunnel vision don’t we? We can get tunnel vision in our own life. We are extremely self centered, aren’t we? We’re born that way. We are born self centered, little babies. Even my grandson, I thought he’d be an exception, but he is self centered. And little kids you know, they discover you have a nose and they begin feeling to see if we have one. We are born that way. We grow up, we become ingrown, self centered before long, why we look at the Christian life as to what’s going on with me. And and we begin to develop attitudes about I am not getting what I want and I am not being ministered to. And I am not doing this and I am this and it’s all an I am me me mentality. Like John Kennedy said about America, don’t think what America can do for you. But what you can do for America, I’d say the same thing in a body. Quit thinking about what the body can do for you and think what you can do for the body. How you can serve, we’re calling to serve one another in love not to sit back and get our spiritual jollies. We’re constantly wandering and trying to get what we want. We want an organization be like we want it to be we want a church to be like we want it to be we want the sermon to be like we want to hear, we become very self centered. And we very easily forget that God leads in different ways. And there is nothing that is done in vain. Very easy for us to get into that rut. We can get self centered in regard to our own little country. And I thank God to that I’m born in America, but also realize there’s people all over the world, and the people in Iraq and Iran and Iran and Germany and Russia and Japan and all over the country. Also our parents that have kids that they’re worried about, and also have people who are killed. And that the hurt when a child is killed is just as deep in a Japanese person whose boy who has been killed in the jungles of Bhutan, as it is to an American mother whose son has been killed in the jungles of Bhutan. And it just as much as are hurt for an Iranian mother who’s lost her child in war as it is for an American mother who’s lost their child in a war. And we have a tendency to get tunnel vision and to believe that, that what we are doing is the only thing that’s important that there is not human suffering outside of, of our little world in which we live.

And then we can we could begin thinking then that this world that we’re we’re in not just our country, but other countries, but this world that we’re in is really what’s important. And I believe God wants to elevate us to say wait a minute, this is little globe out here, just like a little pea out there in the universe. Have you ever seen pictures, remember of of the globe down here? It’s just a little thing floating out there in the midst of the universe. And I think many times the study of these type of things helps us to get our our hearts above this to see there’s something so much bigger than what we think we are. When you take a look at what this little Earth is in light of the universe. And then think how big we think the earth is. Say you don’t have to get up very many 1000s of feet in an airplane and look down to realize you can’t see the things that looks so big to us. Our houses that we place such great importance in this building looks big to me, you can’t even see the damn thing at 20,000 feet. And all of those kinds of things, we, we have the tendency to get this tunnel vision, and take ourselves far too seriously. And I think the study of angels and the study of the universe might just help us a little bit to elevate our thinking, and get it a little bit off of ourselves, and see the immensity of this God that loved us so much, that he came to this earth, to bring us salvation. So I pray that will happen in your life. And mine is we study these things together.

Angels, first of all, they were created by God. And that’s the first thing we need to understand is we’re going to study together. Remember, in Colossians, we went back to Colossians numerous times, and we might just want to go back there, again, is review in Colossians 1:15. Where it talks about that Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. And for by him, Christ Himself, all things were created, things in heaven, and things on earth, visible and invisible. Whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities, all things are created by him and for him. This is first or first chapter of Colossians rather, did I say Corinthians, Colossians 1:15. All things were created by Him and for Him. So all things in heaven and on earth, things that were visible, that’s the entire spirit world, and invisible, excuse me visible this the things we can see invisible, the entire spirit world, all of those things were created by Him and they were created for him. Christ Himself was before all things, and in Him, all things hold together, he’s the head of the body, the church, the beginning, and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything, he Christ can have supremacy. Again, another way of saying what the author of Hebrews was saying that Christ Himself is supreme, over all things. So there’s no created being that could be greater than him, Christ created all things. So he created the angels, he created the entire spirit world, he created the universe that we’re in, He created man, he created, all things were created by Him, and all things were created for him. So angelic beings were created.

Now let’s turn back to the book of Job. We’re going to exercise a little bit here in getting into the Old Testament, which we don’t do very often. But you’re going to have to go back there to get some of this information, the book of Job. If you don’t, in the NIV, that I have, it’s on a page 659. I don’t know where that’ll help you or not. If you don’t, there’s an introduction, in case you don’t know where these books are. If you don’t, don’t feel badly don’t most people don’t, don’t ever be afraid. If you don’t know where something is to look in a in a table of contents, it’ll tell you, you don’t know where the table of contents is. It’s normally in the first part of the book. But it will tell you where those books are and will help you from scrambling around. I can remember in early Bible studies that I’d go to somebody and say turn to and I’d, I’d go and I was trying to hope nobody knew that I didn’t know where it was. But it’s pretty obvious, you know, don’t be embarrassed about it, go the table of contents and look it up. When you read it, you’ll know what it’s read just as much as a person who didn’t you knew where it was. It’s one of those things we put a lot of emphasis on, it’s not very important.

In the book of Job you’re going to see and in chapter 38. We’re going to be coming back to this a little later, hopefully in the lesson but want to hit this verse at least I’ll hit the first verses there. And it’ll show you where this comes from. The Lord answers Job out of a storm and he says, Who is it that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man. I’ll question you, and you shall answer me. Where were you when I laid the Earth’s foundation? Tell me if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know. Who straight Just a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone? While the morning stars, and that morning stars if you want to mark your Bible is referring to angels, while the morning stars sang together and all of the angels shouted for joy. So we learned from this passage that the angels were present at the creation of the world, they were rejoicing, and they shouted with joy. So if you’re looking at the chronology, we have to see that the spirit beings or the angel world was present at such time that the world was created.

We’re next we’re going to see that and let’s turn to Ezekiel, Ezekiel is back quite a bit. You’re in the NIV, round 1182 in that area. Ezekiel 28. What we’re seeing here is that first of all, God created the angels. God didn’t come from one he created them. Secondly, you’re going to see that the angels then were present at the creation of the world. And what I want us to see now is that the angels were, was in the Garden of Eden. And Ezekiel 28 is going to deal about that. The Word of God came to me, Son of Man, say to the ruler of Tyre, and you’re talking about that, that that is that of the fallen angel that we refer to as Satan. In the pride of your heart, you say, I am God. I sit on the throne of a god in the heart of the seas. But you’re a man and not a God, though you think you are as wise as a god. Are you wiser than Daniel is no secret hidden from you, by your wisdom and understanding you have gained wealth for yourself amass gold and silver and your treasures. By your great skill and trading, you have increased your wealth because of your wealth, your heart is grown proud. Because you think you’re wise, as wise as a god, I’m going to bring foreigners against you. Again, when you’re talking about this ruler of Tyre, you’re talking about someone who has absolutely possessed by Satan, and it is a picture of Satan himself. And I think that as we take a look at this, we’re going to see now down as we as we go down, let’s move down just a moment to chapter 11 or verse 11. The word of the Lord came to me and it says, Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him, this is what the Sovereign Lord says. Now in this you’re going to see a description of this angel that fell, that we know of as Satan. You are the model of perfection, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God, every precious stone, adorned you, adored you, Ruby, topaz, emerald goes ahead to list the different stones, your settings and mountings were made of gold. On the day you were created. They were prepared. Again, the angel created and all of these things prepared. You are anointed as a guardian cherub for so I ordained you. You were the holy mount of God who walked among the fiery stones. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were called to a wickedness was found in you. Through your widespread trade, you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God and expelled you o guardian cherub from among the fiery stones. Your heart became proud, on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth. And I made a spectacle of you before kings. By your many sins and dishonest trade, you desecrated the sanctuaries. So I made a fire come out from you and it consumed you and I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who are watching, all the nations who knew you are appalled at you and have come to a horrible and will be no more.

Now we see here a description of the fact that there was angelic beings, the number one angel that was called Lucifer before the fall. And we don’t need to, well if we will go back to that in a moment, but in Isaiah 14, you’re going to see you don’t need to turn to that I’ll read it to you gonna market you can, how you have fallen from heaven, oh, Morningstar Lucifer, son of the dawn. Now this is Isaiah 14:12. You have been cast down to the earth you who wants laid low the nation’s. Now here’s what the fallen angel Lucifer said in his heart. So if we want to understand my friends, where we get these kinds of qualities, we can see the influence from where this came. Before Lucifer fell, he was described here as the model of perfection, full of wisdom, full of beauty, adorned, anointed as this Guardian cherub. My friends, do you see what can happen to us? We are children of the living God, aren’t we? We too have been anointed by the Holy Spirit of God. Everybody who is in Christ is an anointed person, by the Holy Spirit of God. He has been set apart by God. We have been made perfect in the sight of God, by God himself. He made us that way. We have totally been forgiven until our sins are behind the back of God, never to see it again. We have been made a joint heir with Jesus Christ. All of these things have been given to us. And we too have been made holy and blameless in his sight and it says you are blameless in your ways from the day you’re created. And then wickedness enters in.
