Classic Christianity – Book of Romans P31 (12-16-24)

Those in Christ Jesus are Controlled by the Spirit of God Living in Them

~ “You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.” Romans 8:9-11

A person in Christ Jesus has the Spirit of God living in them. And as such, our spirit is Alive because of His Righteousness living directly in us, NOT because of our own self righteousness in the flesh. It’s so important to understand that the only people that have the righteousness of God living in them, are those that are born again of the Spirit of God. And as we have said before, not everyone is a child of God. Those that ALWAYS respond in the flesh, only have the flesh to control them.

So the first thing is to make sure that a person is in Christ Jesus. Share with them the Truth of the word of God. Don’t assume anyone is saved just because they say they are saved. Because most of the time, people have no idea what salvation really is. Most think it is getting their sins forgiven by God, instead of receiving His Life in them. And those of us that have been trained by Righteousness, know that salvation is receiving the Life of God directly in us. And that is by faith. We have placed faith in Jesus, God in the flesh, to have taken (past tense) away our sins on the cross, and thank God for that, and then His Spirit comes to live in us that very moment we placed faith in HIM.

Once we have Jesus living in us, then when True love comes out of us, it’s NOT our love, but His Love living through us that is being manifested. And yet many times people have this misconception of LOVE. But His LOVE is ALWAYS in protection mode for those around us, and always stands for TRUTH. And there is much protection and much TRUTH that needs to be done these days. So as God’s true temple, your body, allow Him to work in and through you and share the Truth with others, and go out of your way to protect those around you from Satan’s deceptions that are going on in the world today.

“Love is patient, love is kind, love is not envious, it is not boastful, it is not puffed up. It does not act unbecomingly, it does not seek the things of its own, it is not easily provoked, it keeps no account of wrongs. It does not delight at unrighteousness, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails; but if there are prophesies, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will be ceased; if there is knowledge it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part; but when the perfect should come, the partial will be done away.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-10

Luke 18:18,19
18 And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, having done what, will I inherit eternal life?”
19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good, except God alone.

~ “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” 1 John 5:12

~ Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one believing in Me, even if he should die, he will live. And everyone living and believing in Me shall never die, to the age. Do you believe this?” John 11:25,26

~ Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.

You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you. Romans 8:1-11

Pray to God:

Do you really want to know the WHOLE Truth of what is going on today?

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the world today and give me the wisdom to know the truth and identify the lies of the devil. Thank you God.”

~ “Well, the issue is, folks, I don’t think any of us are doing good. Now you’ll notice I didn’t say, I didn’t think you’re doing good. I said, all of us, I don’t think any of us are doing that good. I think we’re all in the process of learning what it is to know Jesus. I was telling some people the other day, if you had talked to me 10 years ago, my knowledge of the scripture was way out here today. It’s down here, and you know what it’s doing. It’s getting narrower and focusing more and more just on Jesus. Out here you got all this theology, and you got everything else, and it just keeps coming down to nothingness when you’re left with Jesus and Jesus alone, and when you and I leave this body and going to the presence of God, we’re not going into theology. We’re going into the presence of Jesus. Now we need the theology in order to get to know who that Jesus is, that we’re going into His presence and who it is that lives in us today. But in the final analysis, like Paul said, The only thing that matters is what? Faith expressing itself through love. Do you believe that? Well, then all this other stuff, if that’s true, is just superfluous, isn’t it? If that’s true, then how important is the rest of the stuff that we get so hung up on? The only thing that matters is faith that expresses itself through love for one another, for him and for one another. How are we doing in the love department?” ~ Bob George

Bob George 0:29
People come down and say, well, can’t you have life? I don’t know. What I do know is that the Bible tells me that I’m saved by His life. Well, can’t you just say, Jesus, thanks for dying for my sins, or can’t you say, please forgive me my sin to get I don’t know. What I do know is the Bible says You’re saved by His life. And I do know that a half gospel doesn’t save anybody. I think Jesus loves us too much to give us a half gospel. I think it’s the fullness of the gospel that brings people into a full relationship with Christ Jesus, you come to him for him. Come unto what? My forgiveness? No Come unto me, all of you who labor and are heavy laden, I’ll give you rest and peace for your soul. That’s the call of God. Come unto me. To as many as received His forgiveness, to as many as received who? Him. He gave the right to what? Become a child of God. And so it’s so vitally important that we understand these things, and that’s why Paul stressed in Romans six and seven, answering all of these questions that come into people’s minds when they hear it’s been done. It’s been accomplished. Come to Him by faith. So what we’re going to do is to pick up today, and I’m going to read again that last verse in chapter five, and then go right over to chapter eight, because literally, that is the continuation of thought here.

The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, Grace increased all the more, so that just as Sin reigned in death, how did it reign? Because the wage. Of sin is death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life, through Jesus, Christ, our Lord. So therefore, now what’s the therefore there for? Because of what he just got through saying, therefore there is now, now no condemnation awaiting those who are in Christ Jesus, or for those who are in Christ Jesus. Do you believe that? How much condemnation is there left for you and me from God? None you mean ain’t going to get you. Is he or not? Is he going to get you? Is he going to put you in the woodshed? What did he say? There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, Jesus, there is nothing left that God is going to condemn you for. Well, what if you keep sinning after you’re saved? There’s no condemnation awaiting those who belong to Christ Jesus. Well, what if I keep repeating it? What if I do it twice? There’s no condemnation awaiting those who belong to Christ Jesus. Do you believe that? How many of you have ever said to God, Oh, God I did it again. You know what God said? Did what again? Did what again? I don’t know what you’re talking about. I took that away at the cross. Do we believe that? Now are we that way with each other? No, we got good record books. Yeah, we got an accounting, accounting list. We keep records. What does he say about love? Love doesn’t keep records of wrongs, and we walk around thinking we’re doing so well in our Christian experience, and we’re violating everything that it says in the love chapter is what the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. And we think we’re doing good.

Well, the issue is, folks, I don’t think any of us are doing good. How are we doing in the love department?

And so there’s where, if we’re going to sit around and compare ourselves, which the Bible says, if you compare yourself by yourself, you’re a fool, because comparing myself by you, there’s only two things can happen. One, I think I’m better than you are. That’s pride. The other, I think I’m worse than you are, and that’s self condemnation, and both of those are out of the pit of hell. So I’m not there to compare now, neither are you. But the issue is, he’s teaching us that the only thing that matters is faith expressing itself through love. The whole goal of this Bible is to ultimately bring you down to that logical conclusion that the only thing that matters is faith expressing itself through love. And if that isn’t evident, you don’t have anything. Now we put emphasis on babbling in tongues. He says, if you could speak in the language of men and angels, don’t have love, you’re nothing but a noisy gong and a clanging cymbal. People say that’s a sign you’re spirit filled. Can you imagine calling yourself a spirit filled noisy gong? And we get hung up on heeling, and then we get hung up on this, and we get hung up on church attendance. We get hung up on everything except what the Bible says that the only thing that matters is faith expressing itself through love. That’s all that matters faith expressing itself through love, and that the world will know, that you are my disciples by your tithing record. The world will know you’re my disciples by your loved one toward another, and if you don’t have it, they’re not going to know you’re my disciples. Pretty clear, isn’t it?

So there’s no condemnation for those who are in Christ, Jesus. Now, what should that do for us? Folks in our own experience? What should that do for us? Well, first of all, if I’m going to walk by faith in that truth, then I’m going to be thanking God when I blow it, that there’s no condemnation awaiting me, aren’t I? That’s one of my prayers. It’s going to have to be Lord, thank you for what you did for me at the cross, and thank you that there’s no condemnation for me for what I just did. Is that right or wrong? If you’re going to walk by faith, that’s what we’re going to have to do. Now again, we get pretty well hung up on the Dirty Dozen, the nasty nine and the terrible 12. And we forget about these attitudes of the heart, don’t we? We forget about how unloving we can be sometimes. And I want to tell you the thing that gets to me more than anything else, or sometimes the unloving attitudes that comes out of me, because sometimes I have them, and when I have them, it hurts inside. The flesh, it feels good the flesh. Have you ever noticed how good it feels the flesh when you’ve just ripped somebody off and just told them what you really thought about them, the ole flesh feels good. But again, that’s not love, and those are the things that disturb you the most, are these attitudes that you find yourself exemplifying as you go through life. So the only thing that you can do if you’re going to walk by faith is to be able to say, Lord Jesus, thank you for what you did for me at the cross. I’m not going to ask him for forgiveness unless I want to hang him on a cross again. Is that right or wrong? Because without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness, and he’s not coming back to shed his blood. And he didn’t shed it now. He did it once. He did it for all. He did it forever. So again, if I’m going to walk by faith, I don’t have to, but if I’m going to walk by faith, then I’m going to have to walk by faith in what is true from God’s vantage point, what’s not what’s true from what the Church teaches me or not, what’s true from what makes me feel good, but what is true from God’s vantage points, what is true is my sins have been placed on the cross and taken away. That’s what truth is. So therefore, when you sin, there’s where your mindset goes to Lord, thank you. Thank you for taking away my sin at the cross. Thank you for that. Thank you that you don’t see that and I thank you that there’s no condemnation awaiting me, who belongs to you. Thank you for that. That’s a prayer based upon truth, truth from what, from what we think, or truth from what God did? Truth from what God did. So again, that’s walking by faith. The only thing that counts is what? Faith expressing itself through what? Love. How much more could you be exercising faith expressing yourself through love, than to show your love for God for what he did for you 2000 years ago at a cross? And so there’s now no condemnation.

Now, why isn’t there any condemnation? Because through Christ, Jesus the law of the Spirit of Life, set me free from the law of sin and death. You and I were born into this world under the law of sin and death. Were we not? The wages of sin is a paddling? Is that what it said? Well, what is the wages of sin? Death. How many of us have sinned? All of us. How many are under the death penalty? All of us born under the death penalty. We had no choice. Adam sinned volitionally. We are born in Adam as dead as he became. So you’re born into this world with no choice. You didn’t choose life, you didn’t choose death. You were just born dead spiritually. Now again, I want us to get into our minds what spiritual death is. Who are you dead to when you’re born into the world? You’re dead to God. God left Adam. You and I are born without God living in us, just like a light bulb up there would be put in there with no electricity in it. Had no choice. It’s a light bulb. It’s finally made. It’s wonderfully made, but it’s plugged in, but there’s no electricity in there, though it can’t function. So it has to go out and function some way in its own do something else besides be a bearer of light. And we’re the same way. We’re born into this world, dead to God, but very much alive to the world. Your human spirit that separates you from the animal kingdom, because if your human spirit was dead, dead, you’d be an animal. An animal has a soul. Is that right or wrong? A soul is a mind, emotion and will? Does a dog have a mind? Debatable. Does he have a will? Yes, sir. Does he have emotion? Absolutely, you can tell by how he wags his tail. But does he have a human spirit? Does a dog sit around and be able to plan his day? I don’t think so. I think he just sees a car go by and decides that they’ll try to eat it, goes out and chases it. It’s not planning his day, does a dog contemplate God? Not that we know about. So the human aspect of man is what separates us from the animal kingdom. So a man, although he’s dead to what vacated him, and that’s the Spirit of God living in him, he is still aware of his emptiness, and that’s why there truly is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man that can only be filled by God through his Son, Jesus Christ. That’s why the world is incurably religious. That’s why you can go into the most remote areas of the world and people are seeking to know God. Why? Because they’re empty. And what are they empty of? What they’re supposed to be filled with. And what’s that the Spirit of God living in you? Because God in the man is indispensable to the humanity of the man. You take God out of the man, and you got a man on your hands. But he cannot behave like one. He’s not an animal, so he can’t behave like an animal. He’s not a true man from God’s vantage point, so he can’t behave like a true man, so he behaves like an idiot, and that’s how we behave, apart from God.

Bob George 14:37
And so what we are dead to is the life of God living in us. Now, what is the solution to that? What is the solution to that? God looks down on man and says, Satan came in and messed up my creation. Satan entered into the picture, got Adam to sin. I told Adam on the day that you eat thereof, you’ll surely die. And he ment spiritually, and he did you. And now all of us are born in Adam, not in the image of God, but in the image of Adam. And we’re told that that when Adam and Eve were created by God, He created Adam in God’s image, but when Adam and Eve had Seth, Seth was born in the image of Adam. So we’re not born in the image of God, we’re born in the image of Adam. Dead. We have a body and a soul that’s alive, but a spirit that is dead to God. And so God looks down on that whole situation and says, These people need help. So in order to give them life, which Adam had, Adam had eternal life. He had life living in him, God’s life living in Adam, but he was born under the law that the wages of sin is what? Death, and on the day you eat thereof, you will what? Die. So what caused Adam’s death? Sin. So how much sense would it be for God to say, well, I’m going to give these people life, but I’m going to give the same kind of life that I gave to Adam, and I’m going to give him the life the same deal that under the wages of sin, it’s death. What would happen to you the next moment after you got life and you sinned? Well you die again. So he said, We don’t want that. We had that didn’t work. And so I’m going to develop a plan whereby I can give them eternal life, but in order to do that, I have to take away the cause of death eternally, and that’s what I’m going to do at the cross. It’s not going to be the blood of a bull and goat that can only cover sin, but it’s going to be the blood of the Lamb of God who will take away the sin of the world. And because sin has been taken away, I can now offer them life eternal. I can give them a life that can never be destroyed. I give them a life where there’s never enter a condemnation awaiting them who belong to Christ. Jesus. Why? Because the law of the Spirit of Life has set me free from the law of sin and death. What were you and I saved from? The law of sin and death. How were we saved from that? By the life of Christ, Jesus. You see, we think we’re just saved from our sins. No, you were saved from the consequence of sin. The law of sin and death is consequence. You got sin and you got a consequence. What were you saved from? The consequence. How were you saved from the consequence? By taking away the thing that caused it, so he took away the cause of death in order to give you life eternal. Are we together? Okay.

For what the law was powerless to do. What was the law powerless to do? Make anyone righteous. No man will ever be declared righteous in the sight of God through obedience to the law. No one will ever be justified through the law. The law cannot give you life. If the law could, then Jesus should have stayed home. The law cannot do anything except what? Condemn you. That’s what the law is for, to condemn you. So the law was powerless to do anything good for you. All it could do is to reveal your bad and what you are, so that you would turn to Christ for salvation. So the law was powerless to bring righteousness to a man. So what the law was powerless to do why? It was weakened by our own flesh. The reason nothing wrong with the law. Remember what Paul said, nothing wrong with the law. It’s good and holy, but when it flows through me, what does it do? It kills me. So the problem was with us, not with the law that God gave us. So what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by our flesh or our sinful nature. God did by sending His own Son, in the likeness of a sinful man, to be a sin offering. And Jesus became the sin offering for the entire world, one offering that was of such a consequence and of such value that it took away the sins of the entire world. And so he condemned sinners. Is that what it says? You guys reading, what did he condemn? He condemned sin in sinful man. He condemned the sin of ours, and therefore He who knew no sin became sin for us, so that in him, we could become what? The righteousness of God, what the law could not do.

So the sin issue, the sin that is within us has been condemned in us. He didn’t condemn the sinner because we were already under the law of sin and death. He condemned the sin that brought about that death. Condemned it in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us who do not live according to the flesh or the sinful nature, but the flesh is a better interpretation, but according to the Spirit. Is that good news?

Now those who live now he’s talking about people who are not saved, those who live according to the flesh or the sinful nature. Why do they live that way? They got their mind set on what the nature desires, what your flesh desires, your mind is set on that. Now, how many of you have fleshly desires? Do I see some hands that aren’t up. Are you paralyzed? How many of you have sinned? Let’s try that. Okay, that’s good. How many of you sinned because you had sinful desires? Okay, there we are. So what causes the sin? The desires of the flesh, sinful desires. Now, does that mean, because you have sinned, that you have your mind totally set and occupied on what your flesh desires? Does that mean that? I mean? Is that where your preoccupation as a child of God is, or is your preoccupation on the Lord? Where’s your preoccupation? It’s on the Lord. When you were lost, where was your preoccupation? On your flesh. You lived to fulfill the flesh. Did you not why get up in the morning unless it was to fulfill the flesh. Am I right or wrong? Now you’ve been born again. Is there a change of attitude that takes place in your heart? Yeah, you start thinking about the Lord now, and your mind starts thinking about the Lord, and your mind is on the Lord, and you’re thinking about the Lord, and you want to be the Lord’s person and all this, and who conflicts with that, this dumb, stupid flesh of ours. And so if you were living with your whole being centered on the desires of your flesh, it tells you something, you’re lost. You can’t live that way as a saved man, because you got God living in you. That doesn’t mean that you cannot have desires of the flesh. Does it? Do any of you ever have desires of the flesh again? And are you saved? Well, then that shows you that you can have desires of the flesh and be saved, doesn’t it? So we don’t have to go around saying, I don’t understand anybody does that? Well, just take a look at yourself. But we do, don’t we? We become so self righteous, we go, wow, I could never do that. I say, boy, don’t say that. God will show you you can, and that’s what he says. You see someone caught in the sin, you better go to them to restore them, but don’t go to and condemn them, because you’ll fall in the same trap that they were in if you don’t watch yourself. And so he’s getting at this totality of salvation that God brought to us, and he’s given a contrast between a person who has their total mindset on flesh, and he says that those who live in accordance with the spirit have their mind set on what the Spirit desires. Your number one goal is to have the desires of the Spirit met, but you got a conflict.

Now, if Christ what happened here? Okay, the mind of the sinful man, and that’s a person who has never become spiritual, is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace. Now folks, look at the emphasis that the apostle Paul is placing on our mind. He’s saying that your mind, that’s the seed bed of our soul, it’s our heart, our mind is preoccupied with the things of God, or it’s preoccupied with the things of the flesh. And the mind of a sinful man, and the reason he’s a sinful man is because of his mind. With your mind, until you have chosen to come to Christ by faith, you remain dead, do you not? And what is the determining factor? What you think with your mind, when I came to Christ, I, in my mind, chose to come to Christ. I chose the fact that I was dead. I didn’t have to choose that. I recognized that in my mind. I recognized what the Bible said, that I was dead in my mind, and I recognized that I did not want to remain a sinner, and I did not remain dead. I wanted life, and I chose life. Now the man that hasn’t chosen that is dead. Right, but the mind that’s controlled, or under the control of the Spirit, is life and peace. A man is going to experience peace in his heart when he keeps his mind focused on the Prince of Peace. The sinful mind is hostile to God. That’s why you have people out who are in enmity against Christians, or against believers, people who don’t like the things of God. What is that called? It’s a sinful mind. We call them intellectuals. The Bible says a sinful mind. They’re against God. They don’t like God, they don’t like people talking about God, they stand up just arrogant and just we don’t want to we don’t want a Nativity scene. We don’t want prayer in the school. We we don’t like God. They’re like a little pee ant on a rail train, sitting down, shaking her fist at the engine coming down the pike, coming down the tracks. We don’t understand the fact of how small we are. You know, it’s like they said. You know, God is dead, sign Nietzsche. God wrote, Nietzsche’s dead. Signed God. But a mind that’s hostile to God, a sinful mind. And there’s our problem. What’s the matter with a person they got a sinful mind? And that’s why it says it’s not what a man puts in his mouth that defiles him, what proceeds out of his heart, what proceeds out of his mind, his emotion, his will, that’s what defiles a man. And so he says it doesn’t submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. So it not only doesn’t, but it can’t. On the other hand, it says those controlled and no, those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. Why? Why can’t? What is the only thing that pleases God? Faith. So if you’re not exercising faith, you can’t please God. Very simple, you however, it says those of those of us who are in Christ, Jesus, you’re not controlled by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.

  • I thank you for taking away my sins on the cross,
