Classic Christianity – Book of Romans P29 (12-10-24)
I Do Not Understand What I Do
~ “We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I admit that the law is good. In that case, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.” Romans 7:14,15
God knows us better than we know ourselves. When a person tries to obey the Law, it simply causes more sin in a person’s life. And they will constantly be chasing the sin tiger by the tail. For no one can obey the Law. And that is the point of the law in the first place, in order to show us how utterly sinful we really are.
It’s interesting, how hardly any would be law keeper hypocrite talks about the sin of covetousness, and dismisses even acknowledging that they covet things. Because that is one of the sins that is of the heart. Many people can cover up that sin, by not even talking about it, but God knows the heart of everyone. And the apostle Paul definitely talked about it, for he understood his own heart. He talked about how the law saying, “do not covet” had stirred up every covetous desire inside of him. Because he knew exactly what the law was designed to do, and it was designed to stir up sin, so that we would turn our need to Christ. Understand the Truth of the word of God,
Romans 7:7,8
‘What then shall we say? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed, I would not have been mindful of sin if not for the law. For I would not have been aware of coveting if the law had not said, “Do not covet.” But sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from the law, sin is dead.’
Yet Satan actually stirs up our covetous desires to the max, by showing us things to get, and stroking the flesh and thinking I need this or I need that, when in reality we don’t need any of those things that our flesh wants. And the world thinks that is good, because we are told by everyone that it is good. We get advertisements left and right. Even for those that don’t watch television, we are inundated with stuff presented before our eyes, on our cell phones, computers, and told to us on the radio too, to buy, consume, have fun, go to movies, go to sporting events, enjoy life to the max and enjoy the circus that Satan has directed for us to watch. For Satan doesn’t want you paying attention to the word of God, and would rather keep your mind preoccupied with stuff, and wanting more stuff. We have been so brainwashed into believing the things of the world are good, that we have overlooked the Truth of the word of God.
It’s time to start paying attention to the details, for the details matter in everything. If you are not in Christ, it’s important to understand the world, and everything in it is NOT your friend. Satan wants to take with him as many as he can. So understand your sinfulness and turn to Jesus for Life that is eternal. Come to the knowledge of TRUTH: “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I serve the law of God, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.” Romans 7:24,25
Luke 18:18,19
18 And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, having done what, will I inherit eternal life?”
19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good, except God alone.
~ “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” 1 John 5:12
~ Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one believing in Me, even if he should die, he will live. And everyone living and believing in Me shall never die, to the age. Do you believe this?” John 11:25,26
—
~ Do you not know, brothers (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives? For instance, a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. So then, if she is joined to another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man. Therefore, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. For when we lived according to the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, bearing fruit for death. But now, having died to what bound us, we have been released from the law, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. What then shall we say? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed, I would not have been mindful of sin if not for the law. For I would not have been aware of coveting if the law had not said, “Do not covet.” But sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from the law, sin is dead. Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. So I discovered that the very commandment that was meant to bring life actually brought death. For sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through the commandment put me to death. So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good. Did that which is good, then, become death to me? Certainly not! But in order that sin might be exposed as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful. We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I admit that the law is good. In that case, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do. And if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. So this is the principle I have discovered: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law. But I see another law at work in my body, warring against the law of my mind and holding me captive to the law of sin that dwells within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I serve the law of God, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. Romans 7:1-25
Pray to God:
Do you really want to know the WHOLE Truth of what is going on today?
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7
Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the world today and give me the wisdom to know the truth and identify the lies of the devil. Thank you God.”
~ “So he said, I wouldn’t have known what sin was, except through the law. Is the law still in effect for a lost person? Absolutely. What is the purpose of the law? To show you your sinfulness, so that you do what? Turn to Christ as your Lord. So until you turn to Christ as your Lord, you’re still what? Under the law. You’re still under the law of sin and death, are you not until you choose life. And folks, that’s the whole issue of salvation. Is life? So he said, Shall Is the law sin? Certainly not. Indeed, I would have known what sin was except through the law, For I would not have known what coveting was if the law had not said, Don’t covet, it’s strange that Paul uses that one of the commandments, don’t covet, it’s the one No one talks about. The Catholics did a survey a number of years ago about the most talked about sin in the 10 Commandments, coveting was never mentioned one time in the entire world on confession day, never mentioned. Why? Well, you can’t see that that’s under the skin. That’s stuff we do that no one knows about. Paul uses coveting that gets us all but sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, sin seized an opportunity afforded by the law produced every kind of coveting desire for apart from the law. Sin is what dead apart from the law. Sin is dead. Once he said I was alive apart from the law. And what I think is talking about there is the fact that prior to the law being. Sin literally taught to me I was free from that, but when the Commandment came, when I learned the law, sin sprang to life and I died. Found out I was dead. I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life. I thought that obeying the commandment was going to bring me life, but it actually brought death. For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment or the law, it deceived me, and though the commandment and through the commandment, it put me to death. I finally understood this is something I cannot do. I finally comprehend that the wages of sin is death, and I finally comprehended that, therefore I am dead, and so is everybody else, because all have sinned and all have fallen short of the glory of God. Is that true or not?” ~ Bob George

So he said, I wouldn’t have known what sin was, except through the law. Is that true or not?
So then the law is holy and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. So where’s the problem? If the law is good, where’s the problem? Us. God forbid, not us. Yes, us. Sin. Seizing that opportunity that was afforded by the commandment brought death to me. I understood my death. Well in verse 13, well, did that which is good? Then, in other words, the law become death to me? No, he said, by no means, but in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death in me. It didn’t become death. It produced death. It showed me, I’m dead. It wasn’t that I became dead when I saw the commandment, it showed me my death. It produced the death in me through what was good, so that through the commandments, sin might become utterly sinful, so that through the commandment of God, you and I see that I am perfectly sinful. There is no man that will ever be declared righteous in the sight of God, through what? Obedience to the law. For it’s through the law that we become conscious of sin.
Now, folks, we’re going to see a very interesting passage, and we’re going to see in this passage the problem with the Christian life today, and that is people going out and trying to live the Christian life in the energy of the flesh. What you’re going to see here, and if you have your Bibles, I would suggest that you mark these things as you go along, because you’re going to see, I put circles around the I’s and to myself and to mes and the I’s. And you’re going to see an entire passage of circles. There’s a fact 51 of them in these small, short passage.
So he’s saying, we know that the law is spiritual, but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. Now, the first time I read these passages, I thought somebody had been peeking on me, because this was my life. And folks people say, well, was Paul lost or was he under the law? It doesn’t make any difference. If he’s lost, he’s under the law, and if he’s saved, and put yourself under the law. This is your lifestyle. It doesn’t make any difference whether you’re lost under the law or saved, just as saved as can be. But you kept yourself under the law through false teaching, or whatever it might be. Your pastors told you you’re still under the Law, and you got to keep the Big 10. And people will say, Now, Bob this, wait a minute. We’re not under the ceremony law, but we’re under the 10 Commandments. No, you’re not. You’re not under any of you don’t go to Mount Sinai period once you’re saved. So this is a lifestyle of a person either lost under the law or saved under the law. Here’s your lifestyle. And many of you know full well what I’m going to say before I say it, because you’ve lived it. I don’t understand what I do two I’s for what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do, and if I do what I do not want to do, I agree the law is good, but as it is, it’s no longer now use it twice. I myself who do it, but it’s sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me that is in my sinful nature, for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do. No the evil I do not want to do this. I keep on doing. Now, if I do. I do not want to do it’s no longer I who do it, but it’s sin living in me that does it. Almost sounds like a cop out, doesn’t it? Don’t blame me. It’s sin. Well, if you want to blame somebody, blame what he did, because he said it’s sin living in me, and sin is being fanned by who? Satan using what to fan it? The law. I find this law at work. I when I want to do good, evil is right there with me. How many of you are relating to this? Is anyone in there saying, gee, wonder what he’s talking about. For in my inner being, I delight in God’s law. I understand it’s right. Understand just what he said. I understand it’s good and holy. But I see another law, a law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin that is at work within my members.
Folks, where is the war waged? In your what? Mind. As a man thinks so is he? Now what is one of the ways that Satan deceives us? He tries to say, no, no, no, it’s in your feelings. And so that’s why we talk about our feelings all the time. How do you feel about this? And I talk, well, I feel and I feel, and I feel and I feel, and God says, Look, I designed you in such a way whereby your emotions are going to predictably respond to whatever you are thinking. You’re designed that way. So when you’re thinking about the things you’ve done in the past, your emotions don’t know whether that is happening, or whether that has happened, or whether you think it’s going to happen, they are just predictably responding to what you are putting in your mind. So when you’re sitting around thinking and beating yourself up over all the bad things you’ve done in the past or just yesterday or today, and you’re beating yourself up over those things, your emotions do not know whether that is going on right now or whether you just think they’re going on. Do they? They don’t know. Emotions are dumb. They only respond to what you’re thinking. Now, if it isn’t bad enough that we’re beating ourselves up with what happened in the past and digging up everything that’s happened in the past, either of yourself or others. You can go either way. That’s never good enough for us. We have to start thinking about what’s going to happen tomorrow, right?
And it’s kind of like the husband that comes home and is coming home, and he comes home late, and while he’s trying to get there, why the wife’s got the meal cooked, and she’s waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting, and she’s getting mad and madder and madder, and she starts thinking, why isn’t he there? Wonder where he is. He’s doing that to hurt me. If he was thinking about me, he would be here on time, and by the time the poor guy walks in the door at night, he’s been caught in traffic, she is irate, not only irate because what she’s been thinking in the past, but she’s also gone forward, and I’ll bet the slob is going to be late tomorrow too. As a matter of fact, if I live with him another 20 years, he’ll be late every day, and now you got about 90 mads working. You got the past working. You got the future working. And he comes in and, brother, he gets it, and he sitting back, said, what’s wrong? What do you mean? What’s wrong? You’ve been late for 50 years. Is that right or wrong? Is that the way things happen now? You see, when I’m thinking about what’s happened in the past, my emotions, there’s only one time I can feel something that’s right now. I can’t feel yesterday, I can’t feel tomorrow. I can only feel something right now, but I can think something yesterday and I can think something tomorrow. Can’t I? I can create things with my mind. I can create songs with my mind. I can create poetry. I can create literature with my mind. And my emotions are going to predictably respond to whatever I’m thinking. We’re built that way. We’re made that way. And so what God is saying to us is to live a day at a time. Now, if he was saying that in regard to the physical aspect, that would be a pretty dumb thing to say, because that’s the only time I can live is right now. But he was saying, in your mind, Bob, live a day at a time. You cannot be sitting around thinking about what’s going to happen or has happened in the past, because your emotions are going to respond as if it’s going on right now, Amy can share her testimony about her life back in Russia, and she will cry just as if it’s going on. Why? Because your emotions don’t know whether it’s going on, or you’re thinking it’s going on, or it has gone on. You’re dragging back a past event that is sad and your emotions are predictably responding to them. Are we together? Now yesterday, He said, Forget yesterday. There’s not a thing in the world you can do about yesterday. There isn’t a thing in the world that you can do about what you have done or haven’t done yesterday. It’s done, isn’t it? It’s over, isn’t it? It’s past, it’s history. But as long as you insist upon thinking about it, it’s present, is it not? And so the way that you can keep your feelings from feeling something that’s happened bad is to quit thinking about it. Now. How do you do that? You change your thoughts onto the things of God. Can you learn to thank God for all things? Because I want to tell you, folks, if you’re going to grow in grace and grow in love, you’re going to have to grow through trials and tribulation. I do not know any other way to grow, do you, except through trials and tribulation. You’re not going to grow in good times. You’re going to grow in the tough times. That’s when you draw near to God. That’s why a lot of people who have gone through terrific illnesses say if I had it to do all over again, I would do it all over again because of how close I’ve drawn to Jesus in the midst of the trial and tribulation.

And so we learn to give thanks in all things, and we have to learn to quit taking ourselves so seriously and to realize the frailty of humanity. Paul said that no longer I do it, it’s sin living in me. Any sin you and I have ever committed has been prompted by Satan. We just gave into him. And so he said, live a day at a time. Now, when you’re over there thinking about all the bad things that’s going to happen to you tomorrow, that’s God’s country, isn’t it. Do you have a clue what’s going to happen tomorrow? Does anyone here know for sure you’re going to be alive tomorrow? No, we don’t know anything about tomorrow. The only thing that I know about tomorrow is that my Jesus, that’s today, is already there. That’s why I don’t have to fear tomorrow. Is because I don’t have to fear today. And if I don’t have to fear today, I don’t have to fear tomorrow. But for me to be jumping up ahead, it’s kind of like, Oh, if you do this, oh, this oh, this is going to happen. And this is going to happen, this is going to happen. Well, your emotion just come up and say, Ooh, this is happening. And, you know, there’s a lot of people who are like that. They can never just say that this is the event you got to you got to have a scenario as to all the things this is going to bring about. If you speed, you’re going to get a ticket, you’re going to have to go to court, you’re probably going to go to jail, you’re going to get on your I mean, you got a whole scenario developed as to all the bad things that are going to happen. And guess what? You’re sitting near a nervous wreck.
Now, folks, that’s the way that people become basket cases. Mental basket cases is because our minds are thinking back on all the bad things that have happened in the past, go forward to think about all the bad things are going to happen in the future, and our emotions are sitting there, being jarred by these thoughts, jarred by these thoughts, and we ruin the only thing that We have available to us, and that’s today, and we ruin today through the preoccupation with yesterday and the preoccupation with tomorrow. How do you get depressed? By thinking depressing thoughts. Anyone in here ever been depressed? If you have you’re thinking depressing thoughts. That’s why you’re depressed. You’re not depressed because you’re bipolar, unless you’re a bear. You’re not depressed because you’re sick. You’re depressed because you’re thinking depressed thoughts. How many of you have ever felt the emotion of anger? What were you thinking? Nice, sweet thoughts? What were you thinking? Angry thoughts. That’s why you were feeling angry. How many of you have ever thought anxious thoughts? What were you thinking? Anxious thoughts. That’s why you’re feeling anxiety. I want to ask you a question, is anxiety unusual? If it was unusual, why would Jesus say don’t be anxious. It’s not a syndrome. It’s anxiety brought about by thinking anxious thoughts. Anger, is anything unusual about getting angry? Sarah, you think that’s an unusual behavior? Do you think any shrink, never gets angry? You see, there isn’t anybody sitting out there that can do the things they tell you you shouldn’t be doing. All of those things are normal. Otherwise, why would you have to say? You know, if is getting fearful unusual to be fearful about anything, is that? How unusual is it for you to fear something? If it was unusual, why would he have to say Fear not. I’ve overcome the world. If it was unusual to be fearful. Well, folks in things like depression, fear is one of the ingredients. Misplaced, dependency is one of the ingredients. All of these things are ingredients, like a cake, that make up this thing called depression. It’s not a sickness, it’s not a syndrome, it’s a thinking pattern. And when you get your thinking changed, you’re going to get your depression changed. I can get depressed real easy. Look in the mirror. Now if I want to concentrate on that, I’ll really get depressed.
The issue is my friends, As a man thinks so is he, and what he’s talking about here is that that there’s a law at work in the members of my body waging war against my mind. And that’s where the war is, right up here, the War of the mind. And we have everything in the world’s power trying to convince us do not think about God. Do you know in Canada right now, they’re trying to pass a law that the Bible is a book of hate language, and they’re trying to ban it or rewrite it. And I want to tell you something, folks, we’re right on the tail of that Caboose following right into it. This country was founded on Christian Judeo principles in that we’ve said other people can come and worship as you want to, but now we’re letting those people that came into worship say, you can’t worship Jesus anymore. You can’t put 10 commandments in a court courthouse. What do you think a courthouse is? It’s a court of law. Where in the world do you think the laws came from? It came from God, and we got a bunch of wimps sitting up in political offices that are scared to death of standing up and telling these atheists and agnostic to get lost. We are a Christian country. If you don’t like it, move someplace else, but you do not have the right be telling Christians how to live. It’s a tragedy. What has happened to the backbone of people in politics today who would rather be politically correct than they would be godly. And I hope that someday somebody will stand up in the offices of this land and get back to where we were, where we acknowledge the fact of our Creator.
So he said, there’s a war, and we have enemies in this country, and we have enemies in this world, and there’s a war that is fanned by Satan waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. Now this tells us that we had become a prisoner to the law of sin, and so he is saying to us in verse 24. What a wretched man that I am. Now. He’s gotten through and is Romans seven, telling us that the things I want to do, I don’t do the things I don’t want to do, I do anyway. If I keep on doing the things I want to do, it proves it’s no longer I who do it, but it’s sin living in me. He’s talking about that there’s a warfare going on in my mind, making me a prisoner of the law of sin within my members, What a wretched man that I am now, folks there again. I believe with all my heart that until we see our wretchedness, we are never going to enter into that new life that God gave to us in Christ, Jesus. I believe as long as we’re thinking and we buy this stuff, well, now basically, how many of times have heard this, basically that we’re a good person. Basically, he’s a good he’s a good, good person. Now, Jesus said no one’s good except God, but we call ourselves good. Paul called himself wretched. And I believe that until we see our own wretchedness, our own totally inability. You see what he is doing in his passage, which you see the eyes and the me’s and the my we got 51 of those in this little short passage, 51 eyes, mes, myself and I’s. What is he showing us? This is a man trying to live the Christian life in the energy of his own flesh, and you can’t do it. And so he said, I find myself a slave to God’s law. In myself, in my flesh, but in my spirit, I’m a slave, or excuse me, but in the sinful nature, in my flesh, I’m a slave to the law of sin.
And then you get into chapter eight. Therefore, here’s what he wanted us to know. All along, there’s no condemnation awaiting those who belong to Christ Jesus, because it’s through Christ Jesus that the law, the spirit of life, has set me free from the law of sin and death. Folks, I’m just again. I do not have words adequate to express enough what is in my heart to let people know that you’ve got to let go of the law. The Bible is telling us die to the law so that you can come alive to grace. Now why do not people want to die to the law? Because they’re afraid of freedom. They also don’t want to die to the law because they don’t know they’re indwelt by the Spirit of God living in them. You see, we have someone living in us, not some thing to obey, but someone living in us to lead and guide us into all truth. And if you’ve never experienced trusting Jesus with your day to day life, instead of looking for principles to live by, or laws to live by, or promises to live by, then we got all these criteria that we go out and live by instead of I live by a life. I had a lady the other day say, I live by the 66 books of the Bible. I well, I wish I could have said, but you look like one, but I don’t know what you look like. But again, that’s what. That’s what you I live with six, six books of the Bible. And I felt like saying it was too bad you don’t live by a life because you’ve missed the author. You’re studying the books and you miss the author. We don’t live by the Bible. You live by Jesus. Now Jesus is the one who, who his Spirit, wrote the Bible, so that’s how we know about Jesus. But the purpose of this Bible and reading it is to get to know the author. And so many times we become students of the book, and we don’t know the author.
And what this book is trying to tell us is, guys, you cannot live up to the law. When you’re trying to live under the law, you’re going to find yourself just like Romans seven, the things you want to do you don’t do the things you don’t want to do anyway, pretty soon you get down the point and say, I want to give up. How many people do you know who have given up and just walked away and they think they’re walking away from God, rebellion? How many of you rebelled in a period of your life? What were you rebelling from Jesus or the law or religion? What were you? Religion. Religion, religion, religion, not, not Jesus or anything. To rebel about Jesus. How do you rebel about somebody who loves you perfectly, who died for you, gave his life for you. Says, Come unto me whenever you got a problem. Ellen gave Amy a little deal that said, at night, turn your problems over to God. He isn’t asleep anyway. What is it to rebel against Jesus? But we rebel against religion and rebelling against the legalism of religion and it’s killing people. And Paul was stringent in regard to his dissertations about law and grace, He said, You foolish Galatians who’s hypnotized you and cast an evil spell upon you? You used to see the meaning of Christ’s death as clearly as though I’d waved a postcard in front of you. He said, Have you gone mad? Said, I want to ask you a question, Did you receive Christ by faith or by obeying the law? And if you started by faith, why are you now trying to perfect yourself by human effort?

Listen to the Salvation message today!
Stand on the firmness of truth. Don’t keep going back and forth. Thank Him that the forgiveness issue is settled.
Let’s pray together:
- Lord Jesus,
- I thank you for taking away my sins on the cross,
- never ever to see them again.
- Having done that, I now thank you for giving me eternal life,
- through your resurrection.
- I now receive that life.
- And I am going stand in the fact that I am a child of the living God.
- In Jesus Holy name I pray.
- Amen
All believers are now brothers and sisters in Christ.
