Those That Have The Spirit, Have the Mind of God Living in Them

“But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of man except his own spirit within him? So too, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man judges all things, but he himself is not subject to anyone’s judgment. “For who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 2:10-16

When God starts revealing Truth to a person, it comes in waves as we are able to handle it. We are told that those who are in Christ Jesus have the mind of God living in them. Now that is wonderful news! Because He begins the life long process of renewing our minds. And some people think they have come to know ALL things of God, and that is nothing more than pride of the flesh oozing it’s way back. Because the things of God are infinite, and He alone knows ALL things. So when we read scripture today, you will begin to see the Truth of things that He wants to show you. Don’t discount anything from the word of God. God never lies. He means what He says and says what He means. Yet people will discount the things of God and say, “God didn’t really mean that. It must be symbolic.” These are the very same type of things the devil used to deceive Man to begin with. God didn’t really mean that we would surely die according to Satan, “you will not surely die.” Satan said, “You will not surely die,” the serpent told the woman in Genesis 3:4. And we see that in Genesis 2:16,17 God said: And the LORD God commanded him, “You may eat freely from every tree of the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.” So who are you going to believe, God or Satan? And that battle is still going on today. Who are we going to believe, God or Satan? Satan comes along and says, “surely not everyone is born dead.” Yet Jesus God says, All have sinned and are dead in their sins.

So to be born again of the Spirit of God, means that the Holy Spirit comes into a person and gives them LIFE, at that very moment in time they placed faith in Jesus, God in the flesh. It is NOT some future occurrence, whereby a person receives the Spirit today, and then receives Eternal Life in the future tomorrow. No, the True you, those that have the Spirit of God living in them with their spirit, are New creatures in Christ Jesus at the very moment of New Birth. Don’t let anyone deceive you into thinking that happens in the distant future when you die. That is the same type of lie, but in reverse that Satan used in the garden of Eden, “you shall surely not die,” but inverts it to mean now, “you shall surely not live” right now, it is some future point in time according to Satan and his transformed ministers of righteousness. They will even try and convince you of the Lie, that you are not saved until the very end.

19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good, except God alone.

~ Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one believing in Me, even if he should die, he will live. And everyone living and believing in Me shall never die, to the age. Do you believe this?” John 11:25,26

~ Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.

You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you. Romans 8:1-11

~ “For what the law was powerless to do. What was the law powerless to do? Make anyone righteous. No man will ever be declared righteous in the sight of God through obedience to the law. No one will ever be justified through the law. The law cannot give you life. If the law could, then Jesus should have stayed home. The law cannot do anything except what? Condemn you. That’s what the law is for, to condemn you. So the law was powerless to do anything good for you. All it could do is to reveal your bad and what you are, so that you would turn to Christ for salvation. So the law was powerless to bring righteousness to a man. So what the law was powerless to do why? It was weakened by our own flesh. The reason nothing wrong with the law. Remember what Paul said, nothing wrong with the law. It’s good and holy, but when it flows through me, what does it do? It kills me. So the problem was with us, not with the law that God gave us. So what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by our flesh or our sinful nature. God did by sending His own Son, in the likeness of a sinful man, to be a sin offering. And Jesus became the sin offering for the entire world, one offering that was of such a consequence and of such value that it took away the sins of the entire world. And so he condemned sinners. Is that what it says? You guys reading, what did he condemn? He condemned sin in sinful man. He condemned the sin of ours, and therefore He who knew no sin became sin for us, so that in him, we could become what? The righteousness of God, what the law could not do.

So the sin issue, the sin that is within us has been condemned in us. He didn’t condemn the sinner because we were already under the law of sin and death. He condemned the sin that brought about that death. Condemned it in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us who do not live according to the flesh or the sinful nature, but the flesh is a better interpretation, but according to the Spirit. And so what we are dead to is the life of God living in us. Now, what is the solution to that? What is the solution to that? God looks down on man and says, Satan came in and messed up my creation. Satan entered into the picture, got Adam to sin. I told Adam on the day that you eat thereof, you’ll surely die. And he ment spiritually, and he did you. And now all of us are born in Adam, not in the image of God, but in the image of Adam. And we’re told that that when Adam and Eve were created by God, He created Adam in God’s image, but when Adam and Eve had Seth, Seth was born in the image of Adam. So we’re not born in the image of God, we’re born in the image of Adam. Dead. We have a body and a soul that’s alive, but a spirit that is dead to God. And so God looks down on that whole situation and says, These people need help. So in order to give them life, which Adam had, Adam had eternal life. He had life living in him, God’s life living in Adam, but he was born under the law that the wages of sin is what? Death, and on the day you eat thereof, you will what? Die. So what caused Adam’s death? Sin. So how much sense would it be for God to say, well, I’m going to give these people life, but I’m going to give the same kind of life that I gave to Adam, and I’m going to give him the life the same deal that under the wages of sin, it’s death. What would happen to you the next moment after you got life and you sinned? Well you die again. So he said, We don’t want that. We had that didn’t work. And so I’m going to develop a plan whereby I can give them eternal life, but in order to do that, I have to take away the cause of death eternally, and that’s what I’m going to do at the cross. It’s not going to be the blood of a bull and goat that can only cover sin, but it’s going to be the blood of the Lamb of God who will take away the sin of the world. And because sin has been taken away, I can now offer them life eternal. I can give them a life that can never be destroyed. I give them a life where there’s never enter a condemnation awaiting them who belong to Christ. Jesus. Why? Because the law of the Spirit of Life has set me free from the law of sin and death. What were you and I saved from? The law of sin and death. How were we saved from that? By the life of Christ, Jesus. You see, we think we’re just saved from our sins. No, you were saved from the consequence of sin. The law of sin and death is consequence. You got sin and you got a consequence. What were you saved from? The consequence. How were you saved from the consequence? By taking away the thing that caused it, so he took away the cause of death in order to give you life eternal. Are we together? Okay.

Now those who live now he’s talking about people who are not saved, those who live according to the flesh or the sinful nature. Why do they live that way? They got their mind set on what the nature desires, what your flesh desires, your mind is set on that. Now, how many of you have fleshly desires? Do I see some hands that aren’t up. Are you paralyzed? How many of you have sinned? Let’s try that. Okay, that’s good. How many of you sinned because you had sinful desires? Okay, there we are. So what causes the sin? The desires of the flesh, sinful desires. Now, does that mean, because you have sinned, that you have your mind totally set and occupied on what your flesh desires? Does that mean that? I mean? Is that where your preoccupation as a child of God is, or is your preoccupation on the Lord? Where’s your preoccupation? It’s on the Lord. When you were lost, where was your preoccupation? On your flesh. You lived to fulfill the flesh. Did you not why get up in the morning unless it was to fulfill the flesh. Am I right or wrong? Now you’ve been born again. Is there a change of attitude that takes place in your heart? Yeah, you start thinking about the Lord now, and your mind starts thinking about the Lord, and your mind is on the Lord, and you’re thinking about the Lord, and you want to be the Lord’s person and all this, and who conflicts with that, this dumb, stupid flesh of ours. And so if you were living with your whole being centered on the desires of your flesh, it tells you something, you’re lost. You can’t live that way as a saved man, because you got God living in you. That doesn’t mean that you cannot have desires of the flesh. Does it? Do any of you ever have desires of the flesh again? And are you saved? Well, then that shows you that you can have desires of the flesh and be saved, doesn’t it? So we don’t have to go around saying, I don’t understand anybody does that? Well, just take a look at yourself. But we do, don’t we? We become so self righteous, we go, wow, I could never do that. I say, boy, don’t say that. God will show you you can, and that’s what he says. You see someone caught in the sin, you better go to them to restore them, but don’t go to and condemn them, because you’ll fall in the same trap that they were in if you don’t watch yourself. And so he’s getting at this totality of salvation that God brought to us, and he’s given a contrast between a person who has their total mindset on flesh, and he says that those who live in accordance with the spirit have their mind set on what the Spirit desires. Your number one goal is to have the desires of the Spirit met, but you got a conflict.

Now, if Christ what happened here? Okay, the mind of the sinful man, and that’s a person who has never become spiritual, is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace. Now folks, look at the emphasis that the apostle Paul is placing on our mind. He’s saying that your mind, that’s the seed bed of our soul, it’s our heart, our mind is preoccupied with the things of God, or it’s preoccupied with the things of the flesh. And the mind of a sinful man, and the reason he’s a sinful man is because of his mind. With your mind, until you have chosen to come to Christ by faith, you remain dead, do you not? And what is the determining factor? What you think with your mind, when I came to Christ, I, in my mind, chose to come to Christ. I chose the fact that I was dead. I didn’t have to choose that. I recognized that in my mind. I recognized what the Bible said, that I was dead in my mind, and I recognized that I did not want to remain a sinner, and I did not remain dead. I wanted life, and I chose life. Now the man that hasn’t chosen that is dead. Right, but the mind that’s controlled, or under the control of the Spirit, is life and peace. A man is going to experience peace in his heart when he keeps his mind focused on the Prince of Peace. The sinful mind is hostile to God. That’s why you have people out who are in enmity against Christians, or against believers, people who don’t like the things of God. What is that called? It’s a sinful mind. We call them intellectuals. The Bible says a sinful mind. They’re against God. They don’t like God, they don’t like people talking about God, they stand up just arrogant and just we don’t want to we don’t want a Nativity scene. We don’t want prayer in the school. We we don’t like God. They’re like a little pee ant on a rail train, sitting down, shaking her fist at the engine coming down the pike, coming down the tracks. We don’t understand the fact of how small we are. You know, it’s like they said. You know, God is dead, sign Nietzsche. God wrote, Nietzsche’s dead. Signed God. But a mind that’s hostile to God, a sinful mind. And there’s our problem. What’s the matter with a person they got a sinful mind? And that’s why it says it’s not what a man puts in his mouth that defiles him, what proceeds out of his heart, what proceeds out of his mind, his emotion, his will, that’s what defiles a man. And so he says it doesn’t submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. So it not only doesn’t, but it can’t. On the other hand, it says those controlled and no, those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. Why? Why can’t? What is the only thing that pleases God? Faith. So if you’re not exercising faith, you can’t please God. Very simple, you however, it says those of those of us who are in Christ, Jesus, you’re not controlled by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.

So if the Spirit of God lives in you, it tells you something that when that occurs, you’re no longer controlled by the flesh. In other words, it’s not natural to be controlled by the flesh. Is it natural to be controlled by the flesh before you come to Christ? That’s the only thing you can be controlled by. But when you come to Christ, you’ve got some a new control living in you. It’s like climbing into an airplane and being under the control of the law of aerodynamics. You’ve been freed from the law of gravity, as long as you’re in the plane under the law of aerodynamics. Now, what happens if you decide to step out of the plane and take a smoke? You’re going to hit the ground? Do you going to choose to be under the law of gravity? If you do that? No, you just step out of the plane, and you’re under the law of gravity when you choose not to be controlled by God. Guess who you’re going to be controlled by? Those are the only two sources of control that we have in existence, God and Satan. You don’t have to choose to be controlled by Satan. As a Christian, all you have to do is to choose not to be controlled by God. That’s all. It’s a choice. I’m not going to believe God, just like the Garden of Eden. I’m not going to believe you God. Who did? They automatically become controlled by Satan. Didn’t choose it. They weren’t sitting there saying, I want to be controlled by satan. They were saying, I don’t believe God, and automatically controlled by Satan. And so those are controlled by that flesh of ours cannot please God. You, however, it says. Are not controlled by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you, and if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, He does not belong to Christ.

Now, folks, I know that there are people, and probably some in this room that have grown up in a different denomination, that where it is taught that you are born again today and then you receive the Spirit tomorrow. Call a second blessing, or a third blessing, or whatever blessing they want to put on that. Now, folks, that is an impossibility according to the Word of God. It’s not an impossibility according to that doctrine, but it’s an impossibility according to the Word of God. If the Spirit of God, if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ living in him, he doesn’t belong to Christ. How are you born again, of the what? Spirit. If the Spirit of God does not live in you, you don’t belong to God. So how could you be indwelt by the Spirit today and then get the Spirit tomorrow? Can anybody answer that for me? Are there two spirits? It says there’s one Spirit, there’s one baptism, there’s one God, there’s one faith. Didn’t say two. There’s one. Now that means very simply that when you are born again, then you are now indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God. Is that true or not? Now, to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God is a point in time in history that is a critical time of life. Just like you were born physically, you weren’t born physically over a month or two, you were born on a certain day. Were you not? All of you agree with me on that, okay, we’re all born. Now that is critical, and that is what it means to be indwelt by the Spirit is the same thing as being born physically. It’s the same concept. Now to be indwelt by the Spirit is one thing, to be controlled by the Spirit is totally something different. And we remember in Ephesians five, it tells us, Be not drunk with wine wherein is excess, but be ye, and the literal Greek of that continually being controlled by the Spirit. So it’s an ongoing, continually being controlled by the Spirit.

Now, again, we memorize that passage out of context. We don’t know it mean. So it means to whatever you want it to mean. So you have some groups that say, Well, that means that you speak in tongues. That means that you have healing. That means you have this. That means you have that. Others say, No, that doesn’t mean that at all. That means you go out and witness there When it walks and another one goes out and says no, that means that you sit piously with your hands folded in your lap and you worship God. You got all kinds of ideas as to what it means to be controlled by the Spirit. Now are we admonished by God to be controlled by the Spirit? It says that doesn’t it don’t be controlled by wine. That’s excess, be controlled by the Spirit. Now the problem of it is, is we read Ephesians five, because that’s a little verse easy to memorize, and we ignore Ephesians three, that tells you exactly and precisely what that means. And so two chapters prior to five is where it tells us what it means to be controlled by the Spirit. That I pray that out of his glorious riches, that he will strengthen you with power in your inner being, so that Christ may be at home in your heart through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of God, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, that you might be what? Filled to the measure with all of the fullness of God? What does it mean to be filled to the measure with all of the fullness of God? It means to be filled with the Spirit. What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit? It means to be filled to the measure with all of the fullness of God. What does that mean? It just told us it means to be controlled by the love of God. What is the only thing that counts? Faith expressing itself through LOVE. What does he want us to be controlled by? The love of God.

Now, isn’t that complicated? Why do we make it complicated? Because we can’t do that in the energy of our flesh. My flesh doesn’t want to love like that. My flesh wants its way. My flesh wants everyone to accept my opinions. That’s a sign of intelligence, the flesh, flesh always wants to be noticed. They never wants to be questioned. All these things are flesh, and so we don’t we don’t want this love stuff. So what do we substitute? Well, I go to church every Sunday, and I tithe, and I sing in the choir, and I do this, and I do this, and I do this, and I do this, and we become a bunch of Do, Do Christians. Why? Because we can’t love. And so don’t tell me that all accounts is faith expressing itself through love. I can’t do that. I can do these other things. I don’t need to be saved to do that. I was in church and singing in the choir and doing all give my dollar a week way before I was saved. You don’t need to be saved for that, but you do have to be saved to have faith and to love one another. And so what he’s saying to us is, let’s get rid of this nonsense that you’re born again today and receive the Spirit tomorrow to make something out of the Spirit that God never intended it to be.

Number one, the Spirit of God came to bring glory to Jesus, not to bring glory to the Spirit. And when you have people and organizations and denominations that are bringing attention to the Holy Spirit, then you have people who are not in obedience to the Word of God. The Holy Spirit doesn’t bring attention to the Spirit. The Spirit brings attention to Jesus. The Father pointed us toward Jesus. Jesus said, I’m here, and the Spirit points us toward Jesus. The reason the Spirit of God came, it says, was to point us to Christ, Jesus to take the things of mine and make them known unto you. And so we’ve we again when you get tired of Jesus, then you start on everything else under the sun, and that’s what’s happened many times in Christianity. And folks, if you’re bored with Jesus, I’m going to tell you something. You got a bored problem. Because there isn’t anything about Jesus to get bored with, and there isn’t anything that you will ever come to a point in life where you say, I got it with Jesus, because you’re never going to get it with Jesus. You’re just going to be learning every day your life more and more about his love and compassion and his goodness to you and me. It’s never ending. There’s nothing to get bored with. When you have Jesus, you don’t need to seek the Father. Jesus said, when you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the Father, so you certainly don’t have to seek the Father. You don’t have to seek the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit came to reveal Jesus to you. When you have Jesus, you have what? Everything that you need for life and for godliness. When you have Jesus, you don’t have to seek anything else. There is no experience to seek, because the greatest experience that you will ever experience is the day you were born again. I’ve told people many times you can saw my leg off and get old Benny Hinn to grow it back. And I want to tell you, it wouldn’t impress me one iota compared to the day that I was born again of the Spirit of God. That’s eternal life. This is temporal. And you have people that have that have sessions by the 1000s and the 1000s and 1000s. And you wonder, are there any well Christians? All they talk about is healing. Is there any Christians that are well? And you wonder about that. That was not the ministry of Jesus. When they came back to Jesus, Peter went back and said, Come on back. We have some more people need to be healed. He said, Peter, I’m going on the next town to comparing the gospel, because that’s why I came. I didn’t come to be a faith healer. I came to be a teller of Truth that would save people eternally.

And so we get bored, and he is saying to us, if you don’t have the Spirit of Christ, you don’t belong to Christ. That’s about as clear as you’re going to get it, folks, but if you do have the Spirit of God living in you, you belong to him. You’ve been called a child of the living God. You’ve been redeemed. You’ve been set free from the consequence of sin, which is death, by the gift of God that is eternal life. It’s so easy. How do we stumble over it? Isn’t it amazing how we stumble over simplicity and try to complicate things. Again, it’s not the situation. Well, what do you have to give up being stupid? I don’t know about you. That’s what I gave up, just being simple as a mule. You give up that to get wisdom from God. Wisdom from God as the first prayer I ever prayed as a child of God. That’s the first prayer I ever prayed. Lord Jesus Give me wisdom, because I don’t have any. You get life. You get forgiveness. You get everything. What do you give up? Nothing. You get everything. Well, I’m not going to be able to smoke. Oh, yeah, you will. You’ll still stink, but you still smoke. But if you give God time, he takes away those things. God doesn’t want your cigarettes. He doesn’t want your booze. He wants you. He doesn’t want what’s in your hands. He wants your hands. Says, Forget about that stuff. You come into me. I’ll take care of those things. Some people think it’s sin to chew gum. It’s not send a chew gum. Sin to stick it under the table.

Man has come up with all kinds of ideas, haven’t we, and folks, his simplicity of the gospel is the only thing that counts, is faith expressing itself through love. Isn’t that good news? And so do we want to love one another? You’re going to have to rely on Jesus for that, where we’re listening to the desires of the flesh we’re never, ever, ever going to experience love for one another. The only way we’re going to experience love for each other is when we rely upon the source of love to live his life in and through us. Let’s pray together. Father, we, thank you so much for your goodness to us. We, thank you for the love that you not only talked about, but you demonstrated in that while we were at sinners, you died for us so that we could walk free from the law of sin and death by the law of life. I thank you for the people that are here, young people, older people, everything in between, all races and colors, who all love you because of your love for us and to be able to have the privilege of fellowshipping together without prejudice, without hard feelings, but to be able to love one another is you have loved us. So we, thank you for that. We, thank you for this fellowship. We, thank you Father that we don’t have fancy things here, and basically the reason we come is to study Your Word. We don’t have big choirs, we don’t have big programs, we just have a big God, and we thank you for that. Keep it simple for us. Don’t complicate our Christian life with activities, but keep us focused on the only thing that counts, his faith, expressing itself through love. And we pray this in Jesus name and for his sake. Amen.
