Call-In Classic Christianity Radio – Bob George P801 (01-19-23)
Confess: Agree With God Concerning Your Sins ~ Your Sins Have Been Forgiven
~ Many people are confused by the Lord’s Prayer and the 1st John 1:9 passage of scripture and the understanding of the context that these were given in. It’s also important to understand that the word “confess” in the Greek means to agree with God. It does NOT mean to ask for forgiveness of sins. Yet today the Christian world has turned this upside down to mean something that it does not.
~ Bob George
Larry, the confusion on that comes from people not understanding the difference between the old covenant and the new covenant. The new covenant did not go into effect at the birth of Christ Jesus, it went into effect that the death of Christ Jesus, it says in Hebrews that a will, or a covenant does not go into effect until the one who made it dies, it never go is in effect, while the one who made it his living. If you have a will, Larry, if you have a will, it will not go into effect until your death. Now under the Old Covenant, forgiveness was conditional. As an example, try to bring together in your mind just the logic of this, try to bring together and I’m just gonna tell you before you can’t bring it together because it’s double talk, that if you do not forgive your brother here on Earth, your Father in heaven will not forgive you, now that’s unforgiveness, will not forgive you. Bring that together with under the New Covenant after the cross where God was in Christ, reconciling the whole world unto Himself, not counting their sins against us. And he not only died for our sins, but He died for the sins of the entire world, taking away our sins, never to see them again. Now, you can’t bring those two together, because one is saying total forgiveness that’s at the new covenant. And the other is saying conditional forgiveness under the old covenant. We’ve made out of the call the model prayer, the Bible didn’t call out a model prayer, God, God. They weren’t to God wasn’t teaching them a prayer. He is teaching them how to pray. And so again, as we do instead of taking what Jesus was teaching us to do, and that was how to pray, we made a prayer out of it. Christ prefaced that teaching them how to pray with don’t pray like the heathen, do that take a prayer and pray it over and over and over and over again. So what did we do, take the prayer that take his instruction on how to pray and made a prayer out of it and pray it like the heathen do over and over and over and over again. You never see that Paul, that prayer, praying again, under any of Paul’s teaching, or Peter’s teaching, or any of the other writers in the New Testament, it was not meant to be a model prayer. It was meant to be teaching them how to pray under the Old Covenant. And so you don’t have to bring those things together. You just have to understand the difference between the old and the new.”

Let’s go to Larry listening on WLNO, in Hammond, Louisiana, Larry, you’re on the air? Yes, I’m doing fine, Larry.
Larry
Listen to the program pretty regular on the way home from work, and I really enjoy your ministry. Thanks. And the model prayer was commonly sometimes referred to as the Lord’s prayer. Jesus said that, it seems that we’re to ask forgiveness as he forgives us that we forgive others. And if you take that and put it with verse, John one nine, I’m still a little bit. Could you explain the Lord’s Prayer as far as asking for forgiveness? And the difference in that and possibly confessing our sin? And if you don’t mind, I’m driving. I’ll just hang up and listen.
Bob George
Yeah, Larry. Yeah, I can. Larry, the confusion on that comes from people not understanding the difference between the old covenant and the new covenant. It was meant to be teaching them how to pray under the Old Covenant. And so you don’t have to bring those things together. You just have to understand the difference between the old and the new.
When you’re talking about First John one nine that’s in the new covenant. You’re not talking about a passage to believers as we have taught people, that’s a passage that is screaming directly to what in those days were known as Gnostics who did not believe Jesus came in the flesh he was an illusion. And do not believe that you have a sin nature. No, that’s why it says we claim to be without sin. We don’t have a sin nature. we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. Now who is the truth? Well, the truth is Christ Jesus. Then in Second John, it says when truth lives in you, He will be with you forever. The truth will be in you for ever And so if you are claiming to be without sin and are deceived, and the truth is not in us, it means it’s never been in us, if you’re gonna believe what it says in Second John that the truth once it’s in you will be with you forever. So you’re talking to lost Gnostics later on, identified as antichrist. So it’s saying to them if you people will ever come to your senses and this is a literal interpretation Greek wise, and I’m not a student of Greek, but I certainly interact with people who are, that I don’t know if you people, you Gnostics are ever going to come to your senses or not. That’s the if, if we claim I don’t know. In fact, there’s a question to it, that I don’t know for sure whether you ever will or not. But if you do today, tomorrow, the next day, the next day, he is faithful, and just to have, not to forgive but to have forgiven your sins, and to have cleansed you of all unrighteousness. That’s what’s called an aroist tense. What is an aroist tense, it’s a past act, it’s an act that is done with everlasting consequence. It’s not a movie picture that is continuing. It’s a snapshot, it happened once. And it had eternal consequence to it. When that was written in 95 AD, they knew full well when the cross that occurred back in 33 AD they knew full well that Christ died and took away the sins of the world. So in as much as they know, when it was written, they know the context. And you know, it’s an ariost tense. You know, now why it’s an ariost tense, and why it is saying he is faithful and just to have forgiven your sins, when did that occur? back in 33 AD, and to have cleansed you of all unrighteousness. Now, first, John one nine doesn’t say to ask God to forgive, to forgive you. It just says, if you agree with God concerning your sins, He is faithful and just to have forgiven your sins and to have cleansed you of all unrighteousness. So it is not even asking God for forgiveness, it’s merely agreeing with God, that you’re a sinner, that’s salvation. And so what we have done is to drag that over into the born again believers, identity, and have paralyzed us from ever resting in the finality of the cross, into the ability to know that I have a new identity as a child of God, and that is that I am a forgiven person. I don’t get forgiven, I am forgiven. I don’t ask God to give me eternal life as a born again, believer, he’s already done so. And I also don’t ask God to give me forgiveness, because he’s already done so but in both cases, I certainly thank him for it. In Him in His resurrected life, we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. So where is the forgiveness that was provided for the entire world received? in his resurrected life.
It’s kind of like my saying, I have put a million dollars in your bank. And every time you write a check, I replace it. And you say what bank isn’t in, say, First National Bank of wherever. I don’t like First National Bank. I like bank one. I’m sorry. It’s not in bank. One. It’s in the First National Bank. I don’t like that bank, I’m not going to that bank, well, then you’ll die in poverty. Because that’s where your money is. Well, can’t I have the money apart from going to the bank? No, you cannot. The only place that that money is received is in the First National Bank. The only place that that forgiveness that was provided for the whole world is received is in the resurrection of Christ Jesus. Precisely why the Apostle Paul said without the resurrection, we are to be pitied of all people, and are still in our sins. He said that knowing full well that a cross ad occurred where Jesus took away the sins of the entire world from the eyes of God, but also knowing something that we don’t know or have forgotten, and that is that that forgiveness is not received by walking an aisle to get forgiveness. It’s received in the resurrected life of Christ Jesus. That’s why salvation is not getting your sins forgiven. Salvation is receiving the only solution to the consequence of sin which is death by the gift of God, which is life. The cross didn’t provide life, the resurrection provided life. Now you couldn’t have one without the other could you? So do Don’t mistake one for the other. But you couldn’t have one without the other. The cross is what cleared the deck for the divine action of bringing life to the spiritually dead. The cross was the preliminary. In fact, it’s a day of preparation. It’s amazing to me that Jesus, according to the Hebrew holidays, died. On the day of preparation, the day of preparation was when the Hebrews went in and cleanse their homes of all unrighteousness, so to speak. And that’s the day of celebration that Jesus died, preparatory for salvation. How many sins did he forgive at the cross? the sins of the entire world, all sins, no man will ever go to hell because of his sins. Only the one sin that Jesus said, and that is the sin of the rejection of the Son of God. The only unpardonable sin that cannot be pardoned, is the rejection of the one who provided all of this for us.
To reject him is to reject salvation. To reject him is to reject the God who sent him. To reject Him, is to reject the entirety of the gospel that is wrapped up in one man, and that’s Christ Jesus. There’s not many ways to God, there’s only one way to God. There’s no other name under heaven given among men whereby you must be saved. It’s not that God is narrow minded. It’s that that should have sufficed for everybody. I sent my son, the Muslim world before it was formed, knew about Jesus knew full well about Jesus, they rejected him. They rejected the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And they formed their own God. And ever since that day, they’ve been at war with the Christian world, and with the Hebrew people, and to this day now erupting in brand new manifestations, that the end times that war in good stead and Armageddon is going to be between the Muslims, and the Christians and Hebrews without question. And so we’re looking at why? Well, because of rejection, they rejected the offer that God made to mankind, for salvation. That’s why it’s unpardonable. I can’t pardon that sin, that sin has to be repented of. So brother, it annihilates the teaching that if you continue in the sin, and you’re gonna go to hell, that’s not true. It’s not how sinful you are. It’s how dead you are. It’s Have you seen your predicament? And have you come to Christ for His solution? Have you said the same thing that God said about your predicament? And have you agreed with him in regard to his provision for that? And when that is done by faith, you’re going to be born again, born again of the Spirit of God. So the Lord’s Prayer is you were talking about First John one nine, to have totally different audiences and to a believer on this side of the cross. When you tell a person and you tell a Hebrew, that unless you believe your brother here on Earth, that your father won’t forgive you and they hated the Gentile world. And many times hated people, their own family, they were saying, I can’t do that. He says, now you got it. But I can. And so at any rate, brother, I thought that helps. It’s a long, lengthy explanation of your question. But we did have time to do that. And I wanted to be thorough in the explanation of what salvation is all about. I hope that helps. And you call again, and thank you so much for your call.
