Classic Christianity – The Book of John P88 (08-28-23)

Jesus says, “Feed My Sheep”

We are at the end in our study of the book of John. We will be going into our next study of the book of Hebrews, which actually explains in great detail the New Covenant that we now live under. How appropriate that is, when we consider the instructions that Jesus gave to Peter and quite frankly the other disciples were there also. Jesus said the things directly to Peter to heal him. To make sure that Peter was aware that Jesus wanted him to be comforted by the fact that Jesus wanted him for service in the Kingdom of God. Jesus’ instructs, “Feed My lambs,” for those who are just arriving and or new in the body of Christ. Jesus instructs, “Shepherd My sheep,” for those that are in the flock, and have been in the flock for a while, guide them, instruct them, help them along the way. Jesus instructs, “Feed My sheep,” for feeding on the word of God. Yes we can all be used by the Holy Spirit to do the work of the ministry. We are one with the Lord Jesus Christ, one with the Father, and one with the Holy Spirit. Our perfect worship is to allow the Holy Spirit to use each of us as he sees fit. Simply to make ourselves available to him. Point people to Jesus and His Holy Spirit, the Teacher of all TRUTH, that is Living in them, if they are in Christ, or lead them to Christ Jesus for those that are not in Christ now. For the time is short at hand.

And remember, even at the point in time, when Jesus instructed Peter on the feeding of HIS sheep, Peter and the other Apostles still had not been given the Holy Spirit. That occurred on the day of Pentecost for them. And for each of us, we are on this side of the day of Pentecost, but we had our own day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came and indwelt each born again believer in Christ Jesus on the very day each person places faith in Him.

~ When they had finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love Me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.” Jesus replied, “Feed My lambs.”
Jesus asked a second time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” “Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.” Jesus told him, “Shepherd My sheep.”
Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was deeply hurt that Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love Me?” “Lord, You know all things,” he replied. “You know I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.” John 21:15-17

~ that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s trespasses against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:19

~ “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” 1 John 2:22

~ “Well, they had a wonderful fish fry. They were all full. And after they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, he referred back to Simon, son of John Simon Bar-Jonah. That was Simon’s name before Jesus changed it to Simon Peter. It was kind of like, let’s go back to the very beginning. Let’s go back to when you first met me, Simon, bar Jonah. Do you love Me more than these? Now, it’s interesting in the Greek language, and we miss that in our English translations, the different meaning of the word of love. You have the word agape, which means God’s unconditional love. It can only be produced by God. And then you have the word philao, it’s where we would get our word Philadelphia philanthropic, philao. It means a friendship, kind of love. Now it’s interesting because Jesus said to Peter Simon bar Jonah Do you truly agape me more than these? In other words is your love for me unconditional? Do you love me more than you do these boats and this fish and all of this lifestyle that you were gonna go back to, decided to kind of go back to. Do you love me more than you love what you’ve been doing all your life, do you love me unconditionally? And the whole deal was Simon Peter do you agape me? Now it’s interesting because Peter’s response to that was yes, Lord, you know that I philao you, you know that I’m your friend. Jesus was asking, Simon Do you unconditionally love me? And Simon’s answer was, Lord, you know that I’m your friend. And that all comes out in a Greek language do you agape me Peter? Lord, you know, I philao. Then he said, Feed my lambs. You’ve caught the fish to feed your bellies. But I have called you to do something far greater than making a hungry man full. I’ve called you to go into the world, and to make disciples. And to baptize people in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, identify them with a Triune God, and to teach them to obey the things that I’ve commanded you, which is to love one another. And behold, he said, I’m with you even to the end of the age. And he identified himself with the fact that I am going to be living in you until the end of the age. And we’re going to go together into the world and to make disciples of Christ Jesus. So Feed my lambs.” ~ Bob George

And so it says that, that there are many things that Jesus did. And but he they didn’t record all of them. In one account. It says it couldn’t fill up all the libraries of the world had it recorded all the things that Christ Jesus did. But he said, I’ve recorded these things so that you by believing in Him, may have life eternal life that He came to give us. Now beginning in chapter 20, or chapter 21. Jesus is saying first of all, guys, first of all, you have to come for life. I came here to show you that you’re a sinner. I didn’t do that to put you on a guilt trip. I didn’t do it to For you to bury yourself and get into introspection and say, Woe is me, I just came to show you the truth of something. And that is that you have sinned, All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. So you don’t have to feel like the Lone Ranger. You got good company, everyone has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. So you don’t need to sit around beat yourself to death over this. I’m just pointing out to you your condition, there is a consequence to sin called death. It’s not physical death that will come later, but spiritual death. And you were born into this world not alive spiritually, but dead spiritually, you are alive physically, but not spiritually. Now you know your condition. Now I’ve prepared you for salvation, I’ve showed you you are a sinner, and a sin, there’s a consequence to sin called death, there’s your problem, you’re a sinner, and you’re dead. Now you’re ready for salvation. And until you understand those two things, you’re not ready for salvation. Now you’re ready, understanding what I’ve said to you. And what I pointed out to you, you are now ready to receive the only solution on the face of the earth to that those conditions, you’re a sinner that had to be forgiven, and you’re dead, that had to be corrected. Now, I want to tell you, Buddha can’t do that. Mohammed cannot do that. Christianity cannot do that. Muslim religion cannot do that. Catholicism cannot do that. Protestantism cannot do that. Protestantism, or Catholicism, or Buddhism, or the Mohammed religion cannot forgive sins and raise people from the dead. It’s a religion, it’s an institution, it can’t do anything except organize you. Only a person can forgive your sins. Only a person could give you life. And the only person who came to this earth to do that was not Mohammed. And if it was not Buddha, and it was not the Pope. And it was not Luther, or Calvin. It was Jesus Christ. And the foundation of our religion is not in some founder. That’s the founder, maybe of a religion. Jesus came to give us life. He didn’t say I came that you might have a religion and have it abundantly. He said, I came at You Might Have Life. And the only life available to us is the resurrected life of Christ Jesus.

Now he’s gonna show us something else. That not only that I come to give you life. But the only standard that I’m looking for is for you to love one another. I’m not looking for your church attendance. I’m not looking for your tithing records. And I’m not looking for all of that stuff. Because that’s what it is stuff. I’m looking for, how are you doing in the love department, I came to give you life. No greater love has any man that he lays down his life or his sheep. I showed you what love was that not only did God talk about it, but God demonstrated His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, he came to die for us so that he could give life to us. He’s going to show us a story here.

After what Jesus appeared to His disciples at the Sea of Tiberius. It happened in this way. Simon Peter Thomas called Didymus. Nathaniel from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. Now, guys, Jesus had been away for a while. And I can just see him impetuous Peter. And he said, well, the Lord, Lord took kind of took off and let’s just say I’m going back to my boat. I don’t think Jesus was saying, let’s go out and kind of have an afternoon fishing. I think what he’s saying, I’m going back to my work. I’m going back to my boats. I’m going back to the floorcovering babies. I’m going back from a medical but I’m going back I’ve been following this Jesus, but he’s gone. So I’m going back to my boats. Let’s go out and fish. Let’s go. Get back to what we know what to do. So Simon Peter told them and they said, well, we’ll go with you. Again, if you want to go we’ll we’ll go with you. So they went out. And that night, and they caught nothing. Now that is not really a fisherman’s paradise. Now, early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore. They had been out all night fishing hadn’t caught anything. The disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. And Jesus called out to them friends. You got any fish? Now, do you suppose Jesus didn’t know that they hadn’t caught a fish? These suppose he knew full well that they had been out there all night fishing, and hadn’t caught any fish? Now guys, these were professional fishermen, were they not? They made their living, fishing. So they were professional fishermen. And now this guy standing on the side calling to us, do you have any fish? Like said ah shut up. And they answered no. And I think probably about like that, no. And he said, Throw your net on the right side of the boat, and you will find so now guys listen to this thing. Can you imagine this thing to think unto themselves? If they if they did recognize this was God? Can you hear him saying this? This guy’s a carpenter. He tells how to build a house. That’s okay. But tell me how to fish. When I’m a professional fisherman. And here’s this guy standing on the shore, and kind of belittling us. And saying throw that net out on the right hand side. And you’ll find some, but they did it. They were unable to haul the net. And because of the large number of fish, there were so many fish in there that they couldn’t even haul the net in. And then the disciple whom Jesus loved, which is John said to Peter, it’s the Lord. And as soon as Simon Peter heard him say, it’s the Lord. He wrapped his outer garment around him, for he had taken it off, and he jumped in the water. Now, isn’t this typical of impetuous Peter, he saw or heard, it’s the Lord, he recognized as the Lord and immediately said, I’m gonna go, go, I’m gonna go out and hug him, or whatever he’s gonna do. The other disciples followed in the boat, they didn’t get out of the water towing the full net of fish, for they were not far from shore, about 100 yards. And when they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. And Jesus said to them, bring some of the fish you’ve got, Simon Peter climbed aboard, and dragged the net ashore, it was full of large fish 153. But even with so many, the net was not torn.

Now, I think this is another kind of an interesting observation. The guys came in the boat dragging the net, obviously in the water, which is not that difficult to do, when something’s in the water, who got in and dragged that huge net of fish out of out of there? Peter, he didn’t say he went in with the rest of the guys. He said he went in himself. Now, that kind of shows you that Peter was not exactly a panty waste. He was a huge, strong man. And he dragged that whole net of 153 fish by himself to the shore. Now Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast. None of the desciples dared to ask him, Who are you? They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and he gave it to them. And he did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus had appeared to His disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Well, they had a wonderful fish fry. Bob George 14:24
Again, Jesus said, Simon bar Jonah, do you truly agape me? And he said, Yes, Lord, you know that I phileo you. Well, he said, then take care of my sheep. Don’t just feed my sheep, but take care of them. Look after them, be a shepherd to them. The third time, he said to him, Simon bar Jonah, do you or even agape me? Now catch this guy’s the first two times he said, Simon bar Jonah, do you agape me? Do you love me unconditionally? Simon’s answer, Lord, you know, I’m your friend, Feed my sheep. Ask again, Simon bar Jonah, do you really agape me his answer again, Lord, you know that I’m your friend. Well then take care of my sheep. The third time was, Peter, are you even my friend? I’m not asking you Do you love me unconditionally? This time? I’m saying, Are you even my friend? And that’s why Peter was hurt. We read this without the understanding of that language you say why did you get hurt over this? Well, because Jesus was saying to him something that he would be saying to us, do you love me unconditionally? And you say, Lord, you know, I’m your friend, he finally says, Are you even my friend? Are you even my friend? And Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, Do you? Are you even my friend? And he said, Lord, you know all things. And you know, that I’m your friend. So he finally asked him, Are you really my friend, you know, I’m your friend, you know that I love you. So he said, Feed my sheep. I tell you the truth. He said, when you were younger, you dressed yourself and wept where you wanted to go. And when you’re old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you don’t want to go. Again, Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death in which Peter would glorify God, because Peter also died on a cross. And then he said to him, Follow me. Follow me.

Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Peter loved, who is the apostle John, we’ve talked about that before, was following them. So Jesus would have said to Peter, come and follow me and would have been walking away. And they looked back, and there was John, who was also following them. And this was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and said, Lord, who is going to, to betray you? Now, when Peter saw him, he asked, Lord, what about him? What about him? What are you going to do with John? You’ve told me that I’m going to stretch out my hands. And this is the way that I’m going to die. What about him? Because there had been a statement made to indicate that like, John was gonna live forever. He said, What about John? And Jesus answered, and guys grab this. If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me. So then he’s saying to us, don’t, look at what he’s saying to someone else. What is it matter if I’m telling him to go to Africa as a missionary? That doesn’t mean he’s telling me what business is that yours what I’m telling him to do? I’m telling you to follow me. That is saying guys quit listening to the masses. That the object of an assembly such as this is not to get everyone doing the same thing at the same time. It’s trying to teach you that you can depend on Jesus to lead you into what he wants you to do. Not what he wants the mass to do. What does he want you to do? And you don’t have to look around and say, Well, what’s he it doesn’t matter what he is doing. Or she is doing. He’s saying, you follow me. If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? How many times guys are we getting into other people’s business? I love the passage of scripture that says lead a quiet life and tend to your own business. To my favorite passage. Tend to your own business you got enough to worry about with you without worrying about me. Or your mate. Or someone else we’re always nudging, did you hear that? He said, I’m not talking to them talking to you. He wants us to understand that He came to give us a personal relationship with Jesus, not a massive relationship, a personal relationship. He’s got a job for you. He’s got a purpose, for you to be here. You’re alive because God’s got a purpose for you to be here. When we go to be with the Lord, he said, The purpose here on Earth is finished. And now I’m going to take them home to be with me what a glorious thing. What a promotion. My work is over, you can go into the presence of God and said, and here well done, good and faithful servant, you did what I asked you to do. You didn’t do what I asked them to do, you did what I asked you to do. Well done, good and faithful servant.

Guys, this relationship with Jesus is a personal relationship. It’s between you and him. This down here is a result of that relationship. I have a relationship with Jesus, you have a relationship with Jesus. And we have as a result of that a relationship with one another as a result of our relationship with Jesus. But the key and the important relationship is this one. And then he said, if you have this one correct, this will fall into place. If this, you’re not getting along on this level, it’s because you’re not something’s wrong at this level. If you can’t know how to function on this level, you’re not knowing how to function at this level. And he’s saying that to you. Forget what I’m doing with someone else. I’m telling you to follow me. Now, because of this, the rumor then spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die. He only said if I want him to remain alive until I return. What is that of any of your business? That’s my business. That’s my dealing with him. And I will deal with you, and I will deal with them individually. Now this is the disciple it says who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. Jesus did many other things as well. And if every one of them were written down, I suppose even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written, the life of Christ.

My friends, there is no man on the face of the earth that has ever lived, that has changed lives, like the Lord Jesus Christ. There’s no king that ever lived or reigned. There is no one who has ever been in existence, like Jesus. We hear people today discrediting Christ Jesus, going back and trying to rewrite history. We have people who try to discredit the Bible, who say that the Bible is not true. And I would like to ask how would you in any way, shape or form know, that it’s not true? The reason that you and I know that the Bible is true, is because what’s in it, as it related, first of all, to salvation, has changed your life, you became a new creature. And secondly, we know it’s true because of the fact that you talk to people all over the world, from every different dialect of every color and of every creed, and the same testimony is true that the words of God changed my life. But again, guys, until we can grab a hold of the fact. And this is the fact, that this down here, this life that we have here is temporal. We all agree, it’s short lived. And the older you get, the more you realize how short lived it is. In this world, you’re going to have good times and in this world, you’re going to have bad times. You’ve heard me say on a number of occasions, and if you’re sitting here with a family member, a wife, a husband, whatever it might be, that unless some kind of an accident occurs where both of you are taken at the same time one of you are going to be looking at the other in a casket someday. Or looking at a person who has gone not here anymore. That’s reality. We have a short time here on this earth. We have our turn And we take that turn and we move on. Don’t you wish that you knew when you’re 50? What you know, what don’t you wish that you could have known that when you were 20? Don’t you wish that you could appreciated your youth more when you were young? I think about that so often of how I took my youth for granted, I don’t anymore, because they don’t have that. Guys, that’s reality, we get older, and when our work is over, and the Lord has determined that what I have given you to do, you have accomplished, and now I’m going to take you home to be with me. That’s all reality. It’s also reality, when we lose a loved one, that our hearts ache at the loss of loved ones, that’s also a reality. And that will be a reality for a long period of time in different degrees, but will always be a reality that you’ve missed someone that you love. Now, what’s the counteractive to that? The fact that I’m going to see him again someday. The fact that this life that I have that my mom and dad have gone away and my in laws and brothers and sisters, or whatever it might be that they’ve gone to be with the Lord. And one of these days, I’m gonna be there with them. And it’s a short, much shorter time in what you think and we never know when that time is, do we? But we do know that it’s gonna happen sooner or later. And that’s the beauty of this life is the fact that is temporal is it is that ahead of us is this glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. Whether it be the appearing that he gives to us when we go into His presence of death or at the end of times, that what we have to look forward to in our lives. The ultimate thing is the day that we look face to face in the hands of Jesus into the face of Jesus.
