Husband and Wife Become One Flesh

~ “Because of this, a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” Ephesians 5:31

~ Don’t allow anyone to cause discord in the family unit. When a husband and wife are joined together in marriage, the two become one and this is especially true for those in Christ Jesus. Don’t let a father/father-in-law or mother/mother-in-law cause division ever in a marriage. Once a son or daughter is married, they are now one together and God has joined them together, and no one should be stirring up the pot. Many times, it’s a person that doesn’t know Christ Jesus that is stirring up the pot and sowing discord, and they don’t even realize what they are doing. And the best thing to do with folks like that is to sit down and talk to them, in a private setting, one on one. And if it is happening with one of the parents on the man’s side for him to talk to the parent, and if it is happening on the woman’s side, then she ought to talk to her parent. And as a reminder, you can share Truth with people, but they will Not always accept it, and might even get angry with you. But it is better to be up front than to beat around the bush. And if your father or mother no longer wants to talk with you after telling them as it is, then that is on them, not on you. Your primary allegiance is to your spouse at this point in time. You cannot control what another person thinks or how they react, all you can do is tell the Truth from the word of God. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24

A caller asked a trouble making mother-in-law
Bob responds:

“Yeah, I think this that what has to happen there, this core communication is going to have to take place between your husband and his mother. I think that’s something that you basically have to stay out of. Okay? And I think it’s his responsibility to sit down and to say, Mom, you know, through playing games on this, you whether I know you’re not going to admit this, but you’ve been a trouble maker. You cause dissension, and it disrupts our family, and God has called me to leave my father and mother and to cleave to my wife and the two of us to become as one. And so that is my family, and you will always be my mother, but that is my family, and that is where my allegiance is, and that’s where my loyalty is. And so you’re either going to stop doing that or we’re going to have to cut off the relationship and just not see you because it’s causing too much difficulty. And possibly that strong of a stance can bring her to her senses. She’s probably going to deny it. She may be doing it and not even realize she’s doing it. You just don’t know with people like that, but I’m very familiar with that type of thing going on, and it is hard, and it can cause dissension. Before we were saved. I had that in my own family, we always laugh and say somebody was always in a barrel. And you know that that if one day it was my brother, and next time was me, next time my sister, next time was somebody, somebody was always being talked about, and that only got corrected when they came to the Lord, when their families came to the Lord, but it was, it was tough for a while, so, but at any rate, I think that’s his responsibility. And I would put that in his hands and say, you know, honey, this is, this is a job, but I know it’s not pleasant, but it’s one you’re gonna have to take care of. Well, that’s the best advice that I think that I can give you, that you it’s the these kind of things could be a problem. I don’t know whether your husband is the only son, but he’s the only son living in Denver. Was he the oldest? “No, actually, he’s the middle child,” the caller responds. Okay, Well, the what I’m saying is many times with a situation like that, where the mothers live in the same city with the son, that she’ll try to dominate his time, and that’s been true absolutely and, and there almost gets into a competition with you as the wife and and that’s where a husband has to set his foot down and say, I’m not having this. This is my wife, this is my family and and I love you, mom, but you’re not going to interfere in this. And so it’s not going to be a pleasant conversation, but it does need to be said. And if it’s been said, it needs to be said again.” ~ Bob George
