Classic Christianity – Observations Book of Ecclesiastes – Part 1 – 7-07-25

More Observations Part 1

~ “The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.” 1 Corinthians 2:14

Without the Spirit of God living in a person, they cannot understand the things that are shown by the Spirit to those who are in Christ Jesus. Those that have the Spirit of God, will sound foolish to those who do not have the Spirit of God living in them. The Spirit shows us ALL things, to those who are willing to abide in Him. And that is becoming more and more evident as time goes on. There is the wide road that leads to destruction, and there is the narrow road that leads to life. No matter how much you explain to someone who does not have the Spirit of God living in them, they will not be able to understand. So the issue is to make sure a person is in Christ Jesus to begin with.

“Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,” Philippians 3:8

When King Solomon wrote the book of Ecclesiastics, all he could do is write things as he saw them in the world as a natural man. For even King Solomon, as wise as he was, did not have the Spirit of God living in him.

Ecclesiastes Chapter 2

1 I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy what is good!”

But it proved to be futile.

2 I said of laughter, “It is folly,” and of pleasure, “What does it accomplish?”

3 I sought to cheer my body with wine and to embrace folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom—until I could see what was worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.

4 I expanded my pursuits. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself. 5 I made gardens and parks for myself, where I planted all kinds of fruit trees. 6 I built reservoirs to water my groves of flourishing trees.

7 I acquired menservants and maidservants, and servants were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me, 8 and I accumulated for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I gathered to myself male and female singers, and the delights of the sons of men—many concubines.

9 So I became great and surpassed all in Jerusalem who had preceded me; and my wisdom remained with me. 10 Anything my eyes desired, I did not deny myself. I refused my heart no pleasure. For my heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor.

11 Yet when I considered all the works that my hands had accomplished and what I had toiled to achieve, I found everything to be futile, a pursuit of the wind; there was nothing to be gained under the sun.

The Wise and the Foolish

12 Then I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly; for what more can the king’s successor do than what has already been accomplished? 13 And I saw that wisdom exceeds folly, just as light exceeds darkness:

14 The wise man has eyes in his head,

but the fool walks in darkness.

Yet I also came to realize that one fate overcomes them both. 15 So I said to myself, “The fate of the fool will also befall me. What then have I gained by being wise?”

And I said to myself that this too is futile.

16 For there is no lasting remembrance of the wise, just as with the fool, seeing that both will be forgotten in the days to come. Alas, the wise man will die just like the fool! 17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

18 I hated all for which I had toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who comes after me. 19 And who knows whether that man will be wise or foolish? Yet he will take over all the labor at which I have worked skillfully under the sun. This too is futile.

20 So my heart began to despair over all the labor that I had done under the sun. 21 When there is a man who has labored with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a man who has not worked for it, this too is futile and a great evil. 22 For what does a man get for all the toil and striving with which he labors under the sun? 23 Indeed, all his days are filled with grief, and his task is sorrowful; even at night, his mind does not rest. This too is futile.

24 Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink and enjoy his work. I have also seen that this is from the hand of God. 25 For apart from Him,a who can eat and who can find enjoyment? 26 To the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner He assigns the task of gathering and accumulating that which he will hand over to one who pleases God. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

…..

And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, having done what, will I inherit eternal life?”
And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good, except God alone.

~ “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” 1 John 5:12

~ Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one believing in Me, even if he should die, he will live. And everyone living and believing in Me shall never die, to the age. Do you believe this?” John 11:25,26

Pray to God:

Do you really want to know the WHOLE Truth of what is going on today?

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the world today and give me the wisdom to know the truth and identify the lies of the devil. Thank you God.”

~ “There are people who try to have a legacy and so that people will remember them. I got news for you. They don’t even remember you now. And if you’re worried about what people are thinking about you, forget it. They’re not we’re thinking about ourselves, aren’t we, and yet we want to leave a legacy. Folks, as he’s saying here, I found life to be meaningless. I work my tail off. I accumulate money, and then it goes to somebody that I don’t know what they’re going to do with it. How many people do we know, very wealthy people who have left their inheritance to their kid who was an alcoholic or a drug addict that did nothing but take the millions that they inherited and squander it on drugs and alcohol and women. Meaningless, work all your life to accumulate in order to enable somebody to become a drug addict or an alcoholic. You see, folks, there’s not too many people that you leave your money to that say, let’s go out and build hospitals, build libraries, build better schools. Most of it say Whoopee. I can do exactly what Solomon did. I can take this money and pleasure, every desire of this heart of mine, and after you’ve pleasured it all, we say meaningless. Meaningless.” ~ Bob George

Well, if you will, all turn to the second chapter of the book of Ecclesiastes that is in the Old Testament, just a little to the right of Psalms and Proverbs, but we will have some of these passages up on the screen in a moment, so that you’ll be able to to follow along with us if you don’t have your Bible with You. We’re talking today about King Solomon and what he observed in regard to life. This is not a book like The Book of Romans or Ephesians or any of the other gospels. It’s a book of observation. It’s a book of Solomon looking at life and asking God to show him what’s it all about, and seeing things as they are. And here was a man who had everything he said he denied himself nothing that his eyes desired. I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work and all this reward was the reward for my labor. When I surveyed what my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, chasing after the wind. Nothing was gained under the sun. In the final analysis, he said that it didn’t make any difference how rich you became or how poor you are, you’re going to die. It makes no difference how righteous you are or how unrighteous you are. You’re going to die. The rain rains on the righteous and the rain rains on the unrighteous. Sometimes the ungodly prosper and the godly do not prosper. Sometimes the godly prospers and the ungodly don’t. And he asks, asks this question, What in the world is it all about? It seems to be meaningless.

He came to a point in the 17th Chapter, and folks, when you’re reading this, he said, I hated so he’s not talking about the present, it would be like me talking about what my life was like before coming to Christ. I hated life because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me, all of it meaningless, chasing after the wind. I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me and two who knows whether he’ll be a wiser man or a fool, and yet he will have control over the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless.

You remember, as I talked about last week, that the plaque that the staff gave to Amy and I when we had our burning of the mortgage and there was a plaque with my dad’s picture on it in glass. It’s back in the studio, and also an honor to Amy’s dad that is over in the back, over right over there. But on that plaque were the words, the last words, that my dad spoke to me as he was in the hospital dying of cancer. And I had shared Christ with Dad, because I came to the Lord very soon before that, and was desperate to try to find out where my dad and my mom and my family were in Christ. Because they were religious people. They certainly had gone to church and they had us in church as children, which I’m grateful for. But none of us knew the Lord. We knew about the Lord. We weren’t devoid of this. We if somebody said, you know Jesus, I’d say, Well, I know about Jesus, but do you really know him? Well, I don’t think so. I don’t even know what you’re talking about, but we were not adamant toward Jesus. But Dad, when he was dying on his last days, called my brother and I into his hospital room, and his words to us were this, boys, all the things that I thought were so important in life are meaningless when you’re lying here like this, dying of cancer, and the only thing that counts is man and his relationship with God. I don’t know whether God, Dad had ever studied Ecclesiastes or not, but he was quoting from it. That guys, it’s all meaningless. Dad had a head full of knowledge. He was a very smart man. He was a fantastic attorney. He was a caring father. And all of that is meaningless when you’re lying there dying, we’re all going to die someday. We’re all going to die. And when we do, the answer is, where are we going to go? Or do we not go anywhere? As some people think, this is it. This is it. What you have right here in this body, that’s it. And when you die, that’s the end of you. That’s the end of you. Some people believe that. I feel sorry for somebody who would think that if this is all you got, is what Paul said, if this is all you got, we’re to be pitied, of all people, because this ain’t much, folks. We can get all kinds of wealth, and we can accumulate just like he did, and it’s meaningless, because you’re always wanting more, always wanting more, just like someone asked Rockefeller one time, how much more does it take? He said, just a little bit more. And that’s the way we are. We get this, now I want something else. A brand new car does not last for many days until it’s just a car. Am I right or wrong? Yeah. And if you didn’t have that L, that Lexus on the front, you wouldn’t even know what you were driving, because a Volkswagen will get you to the same place, same place, so you come to understand the truth of what he’s saying here. It’s meaningless to you that when you look at life realistically, you’re going to have a few years down here, and then you’re going to go for eternity and be remembered no more.

There are people who try to have a legacy and so that people will remember them. Meaningless.

Now this has to happen to us. In my opinion. You see what Solomon is saying here. I believe he learned from observation. He learned from people. He learned from having an interest in saying, What’s this all about? The same question that I asked when I was searching, what’s it all about Alfie? What’s it all about God? There’s got to be more to life than getting up every day working your tail off making money so that you can go to bed at night and go to sleep and wake up the next day to make more money so that you. Go to bed at night and go to sleep, get up the next morning, make some more money. There’s got to be more to life than this. Lord, there’s got to be more than this. What is it all about? That was my question to God, what in a world is it all about? Here, I’ve seen my dad that I admired more than anyone in the world. He had worked all his life, worked like a dog to make money, to do what, go to do what? Go to bed at night and go to sleep, get up next day and make some more money. And now he’s dying. And that’s what got me he’s dying, and so am I. Someday, we don’t like to face that, especially when we’re young. I can remember my dad and them talking about their will and how what they were going to leave here, and I say, Dad, don’t talk to me about that. I did not want to hear I was I said, I’m going to live in denial. I do not want to hear my dad talking about that he’s going to die. I didn’t want to hear about it, but I want to tell you something, folks, we’re all going to, we’re all going to and then he says, You’re going to leave your money to somebody. You don’t know what it’s going to do to you. They don’t know what they’re going to do with it. Said it’s meaningless.

So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then leave it all he owns to someone who hasn’t worked for it, this too is meaningless and a great misfortune. What does a man get for all the toil and the anxious striving with which he labors under the sun all his days, his work is pain and grief, even at night, his mind does not rest. This too, is meaningless.

You know, Paul talks about something that is amazing. He said, I’ve learned to be content. I’ve learned to be content with little, and I’ve learned to be content with a lot. You know, I believe it’s easier to be content with little than it is to be content with a lot. When you have little, you’re not looking for much. You just kind of living from day to day, from mouth to mouth, one day at a time. You don’t have anything to accumulate. So you’re not worrying about tomorrow. You’re not worrying about what am I going to leave to my kids? Probably not going to have anything, which is probably good when you’re when you when you got a lot all these things he’s talking about, you’re worrying about, you can’t sleep at night. You’re worried about those kind of things. And so he said, I’ve learned something about contentment, folks, contentment is peace, and you will never, ever, ever have the peace of God until you experience peace with God. And you will never experience peace with God until you understand one simple truth, it’s all him and none of you. It’s you’re never going to experience peace with God until you experience the grace of God. There’s one reason that I know where I’m going when I’m absent from the body and present with the Lord. And there’s one reason, and one reason only that I know where I’m going. It’s because of the grace of God. There’s nothing worthy in me to walk into the presence of a perfectly holy, loving God, there’s nothing in me to qualify. It’s Grace. And until I embrace grace with all of my soul and strength, I am never going to experience peace in my heart.

There is no such thing as having peace when you’re wondering, Am I going to make it, or aren’t I? There is no peace there, because you’re always going to be wondering, what a sad thing guys to think of coming to the end of your years where this thing called death is is at least in sight and wondering, Am I going to go to heaven or not? Have I done enough? Have I cleared my deck? Because I know I’m not going to get there with unconfessed sin. So have I confessed it all? And have I done everything that I need to do, to go into the presence of this holy God and to die with that wonderment? What a sad thing for people, when you think about it, how sad to be wondering if you’ve done enough, if you’ve been a good enough wife or a good enough husband, or have I been a good enough father, or have I been a good enough mother, or have I God, have I have I have I have I have I done, done, done, done, done? We’ve become do do Christians so that we can do enough to get into the presence of God.

My friends, there’s no peace in that. There’s no peace of God that passes all understanding with that thought, there is only one way that you’re going to find that life has some meaning to it. Because I want to tell you something, guys, you know it, and so do I. There’s no meaning to this life apart from being in Christ Jesus. I didn’t know that until I came to Christ at 36 but I sure had enough years of gutting it out in the energy bone flesh to realize that this ain’t working. I had had enough experience, and that’s good. That’s good. I wondered many times, God, why did you wait 36 years for for me to come to you? I would have liked to have come earlier and saved myself all these problems. He said, I did so so you’ll learn how meaningless life is apart from me, so that you’ll be a witness to the lost people out there that you’re around all the time, so that you can see you’ve experienced the emptiness of life. You’ve had your Lincoln Continentals, you’ve had your home with the swimming pools, you’ve hobnobbed with the Hollywood crowd. You’ve got all of that. And what was it, Bob? Meaningless, absolutely. Now you’re almost ready for salvation.

And then my dad was dying, and that’s when it really hit Lord Jesus, what’s it all about? What’s it all about? And it was in that condition of having much of what the world has to offer and finding out it was meaningless. I had to find that out. But I found that out. It’s meaningless, because every time you get one thing, you’re wanting more. I had a wholesale distributorship in Los Angeles. I wanted one in Northern California. Get one in Northern California. Want one in San Diego. You never have enough. Enough is never enough. What was the difference in my life between then and now? I have Jesus. When I came to Christ, Jesus by faith. And this was another thing that got me is, Bob, how dumb are you? Everything that you’ve ever looked for in life was as close as a prayer, just as close as a prayer, and you were out there looking every place else. It’s like someone giving you a beautiful set of clothes, and you’re out there looking church. Said, What are you doing? Bob, some clothes. What do you think you got on? Looking for what’s there, and coming to understand the truth that the emptiness that was inside of me was the fact that God didn’t live in me. I was not born with God in me. I didn’t know all this at the time, I was born devoid of God. Every man born into this world is born in Adam, dead in the image of Adam. We’re not born in the image of God. Adam was created in the image of God. We’re born in the image of Adam, dead and in need of life. I didn’t know that I had physical life. I had soulish life, but my human spirit was empty of the Spirit of God living in me. I’m born that way. I’m born dead and in need of life. That’s why he said. When you were dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you what? Alive with who? Christ, He forgave how many of your sins, All of them, all of them.

And so at age 36 of my particular life, you all have your own personal testimonies. Age 36 of my particular life, a man told me about Jesus, told me about the fact that God came to give me life, and I knew there was something missing in me. I used to look into the mirror and say, Bob, George, what in the world is wrong with you that you cannot be the kind of person that you know you ought to be, not just what God wants me to be, who I want me to be, empty, empty, inside, successful, to a degree, in business, made money, have nice cars, nice house, nice friends, empty, empty as a pork barrel. Could not be the person that God called me to be. And so is as an act of faith, a person asked, Do you want to ask Jesus to come into your heart and to be your Lord and Savior? You want to ask him he’s alive.

You see, folks, here’s the issue, if all of this is nothing but a bunch of theological hogwash, and someone says to you, would you like to pray and ask God to come and live within you? If Jesus is not alive, then the worst thing that’s going to happen to you that day is you’re going to pray to air. That’s it. Just pray to air. I’m just going to be talking to nobody. Isn’t that right? That’s the worst thing can happen to you. Just made a little bit of a fool out of myself, and I just talk to nobody. On the other hand, if this is true, and if Jesus was raised from the dead, so that that life that raised Him from the dead is available to raise you from your condition of spiritual death, if indeed that is true, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose except breathing to air. If he isn’t alive, it’s the worst thing is going to happen to you. Just pray to a little bit of air. But if he is alive, which he is, you’re going to see a total life change. Total life change.

When I came to Christ at age 36 and got one of these and opened it, it cracked. I never had one open before. After I prayed this prayer, pray to prayer. Sat down the guy like an idiot, crying, my eyes out, heart broken over me, and said, Lord Jesus, thank you for taking away my sins at the cross. Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you were raised from the dead so that that life that raised you from the dead can raise me from my state of spiritual death. And I ask you right now to come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. That’s all I did. That’s all I did. That’s all I did. What’d he do? What he said he’d do. Came into my heart. It says in the scripture, I’m going to give you a new heart. And he did. Never had this book open. Never cared to have it open. Went to church. Very generously, gave my dollar every week/ If I couldn’t get anything out of the plate, I put a little bit in. Didn’t know the Lord now I did. By doing what? Praying this little prayer. He said, Well, did the prayer do it? Hun huh. God did it. God did it well. Had ever prayed anything like that before? No, didn’t know anything before. Never heard us supposed to. But just by talking to God who’s alive, not dead, he’s alive, we’re talking we serve a living God. Don’t serve a dead god. That’s why he isn’t on the cross. If he’s still on the cross, he’s dead, he’s alive,

And he’s alive, waiting on any human being on the face of this earth, man and woman, boy and girl, who will see life here is meaningless. Amen. It apart from him, apart from him, meaningless. No meaning and purpose to life until you’re plugged into your Creator. And what does it take to plug into your Creator? Realizing that he’s there. In order to come to God, you must believe he is and he’s a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. And when you understand, yeah, there is a God, and he’s alive, and he wants to come and take up residence in my life. And when it occurs, the Bible says you and I are born again. Been born a mom and dad physically, now you’re going to be born again spiritually. And suddenly you have meaning and purpose to life. Guys, all of this Ecclesiastes is talking about a person that has no meaning and purpose to life. Why? Because I didn’t know Christ at that time. I could have written this book. So could you could have written it Meaningless, meaningless. You go out and get drunk with your buddy, meaningless. You go out and do this, meaningless. You could have all the affairs in the world, meaningless. Don’t mean a thing till you have Christ. Till you why? Well, because you’re not complete. Apart from Christ, you have a soul. So does a dog, and he talks about this, there any difference between a dog and a man? We both live and die. We both breathe the same air. No difference between you and a dog if you’re not in Christ, meaningless. But the human spirit that the dog does not have is empty. What’s it empty of? God, God living in my human spirit, which is my hope of glory.
