Classic Christianity – Spirit Controlled Living – Part 2 – 10-13-26
~ You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. ~ Romans 8:9
The Misunderstanding of “Volume” vs. “Control”
One of the most widespread misunderstandings in traditional theology is treating the phrase “filled with the Spirit” as a quantitative fluid measurement—as if the Holy Spirit is a liquid poured into a human cup in varying percentages (e.g., 50% filled vs. 80% filled).
However, when we examine the scriptural language under the New Covenant, being “filled with the Spirit” has nothing to do with volume, and everything to do with governance, occupancy, and control.
1. Possessed vs. Vacant: The Courtroom Boundary of Romans 8:9
In Romans 8:9, the Apostle Paul establishes an absolute binary regarding the indwelling of the Holy Spirit:
“You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.” — Romans 8:9
Paul links having the Spirit directly with being controlled by the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is an indivisible Person, not a divisible substance. He comes to occupy, seal, and govern the hardware of a reconciled clay vessel. If a person’s entire life is systematically and unbrokenly driven by independent self-will, horizontal pride, and fleshly initiative, it provides evidence that the vessel remains spiritually vacant.
2. Deconstructing “Filled”: The Washed Jar vs. The Occupied Vessel
To understand how the Holy Spirit operates in the believer, we must distinguish between legal cleaning and spiritual governance:
- The Washed Jar: The global propitiation (Hilasmos) at Calvary globally settled the Adamic debt, washing every clay jar clean in the courtroom of Heaven. However, a washed jar can still stand completely empty.
- The Act of Indwelling: Salvation occurs at the microsecond of Faith, when the Holy Spirit occupies and seals the washed vessel.
- Control Over Quantity: You cannot get more of the Holy Spirit, because the Spirit is a Person. Being “filled” simply means the Holy Spirit has complete governance and control over your thoughts, speech, and actions, displacing the independent initiatives of the flesh.
3. Scriptural Blueprints: “Filled” Means Governed and Led
A. Ephesians 5:18 — The Direct Linguistic Analogy
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit…” — Ephesians 5:18
Paul uses an undeniable physical analogy here. When a person is “filled with wine,” they are under the active influence and control of the alcohol—it dictates their speech, walk, and behavior.
In direct parallel, to be “filled with the Spirit” means to be under the active influence, governance, and control of the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to direct your words and steps rather than horizontal fleshly desires.
B. Galatians 5:16–18 — Walking and Being Led by the Spirit
“Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh… But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.” — Galatians 5:16, 18
Paul contrasts two competing drivers at the steering wheel of your life:
- Independent Self-Will (The Flesh): Operating on human logic, self-effort, and horizontal pride.
- Vertical Governance (The Spirit): Yielding to the Spirit’s frequency, which automatically starves and silences the independent initiatives of the flesh.
C. Galatians 2:20 & Colossians 1:27 — The Displacement of Self-Will
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me…” — Galatians 2:20 “Christ in you, the hope of glory…” — Colossians 1:27
True Christian life is not an independent human trying to imitate Jesus through fleshly willpower. It is Christ in you—the uncreated Spirit occupying the vessel so that the life now lived in the flesh is governed by His vertical direction.
Summary Verdict: Yielding the Driver’s Seat
The root of the Fall in Eden was independent horizontal initiative—Adam acting apart from the Father. Redemption reverses that rebellion by bringing the believer into a continuous posture of vertical dependency.
To be “filled with the Spirit” is to be vacuum-locked under His complete control. It is quieted self-will, a listening ear, and a surrendered heart asking every microsecond:
“Father, what would You have me do right now?”

Pray to God:
Do you really want to know the WHOLE Truth of what is going on today?
Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the world today and give me the wisdom to know the truth and identify the lies of the devil. Thank you God.”
~ Bob George teaches that believers should call sin what it is rather than relabeling it, while focusing on exposing sinful actions—not condemning or shaming people, which can become gossip or slander. He describes worry as the opposite of faith and says Christians need not fear acknowledging sin because, in his view, God has taken away condemnation for it. He then discusses Ephesians’ instruction not to get drunk but to be filled with the Spirit, explaining “filled” as being under someone’s control: alcohol and drugs can impair judgment, while being controlled by the Spirit means being guided by God’s love. He cautions against drunkenness and against using personal freedom in ways that could become a stumbling block to others, while distinguishing that from a blanket prohibition on drinking wine. George rejects interpretations that define being Spirit-filled primarily through dramatic outward displays, arguing instead that Ephesians 3 explains the idea through the Spirit’s strengthening of believers to understand Christ’s love; he says spiritual gifts have little value without love, and that love should shape a Christian’s actions moment by moment. He also emphasizes gratitude in prayer, suggesting that understanding God’s grace shifts prayer away from constant pleading toward thanksgiving for God’s provision, patience, mercy, and kindness. In daily life and work, he recommends planning what one will do while leaving outcomes to God, since fixation on results can lead to pride or self-condemnation. Finally, he presents submitting to one another as listening with humility, making room for other perspectives, and recognizing that people can have different viewpoints while still sharing unity.
“Now, when it talks about to be controlled by the Spirit, what does that mean? Well, it depends on which denomination you go to. If you’re out of a charismatic background, that’s going to mean all kinds of stuff, from rolling around on the floor and barking like a dog, getting slain in the Spirit, speaking in tongues. Anything else you can think of? All of those kind of things. That’s what it means. Be filled of the Spirit. I’m a. How many of you heard? I’m a spirit-filled Christian. How many ever heard that? There is no such thing. There is no such thing as a spirit-filled Christian. You can be Spirit controlled right now, but you pull out here that driveway and let someone pull in front of you, and you’re going to see that filling go. Now, what a spirit-filled Christian would mean is I am controlled by the Spirit 24 hours a day, and that wouldn’t that be a designation? That’s an identity. Who are you? I’m a Spirit-filled Christian. What’s that mean? Well, I’m little Jesus walking around down here. You’re never going to see me get angry at somebody pull in front of me. Is there such a thing? Is there anybody like that you’ve ever met? I had a guy on the radio one time sounds spirit filled Christian. Said, “Let me interview your wife. Let me talk to her. He had the audacity to let me, but didn’t take long for he got her off the phone. So there’s no such thing as a spirit-filled Christian. That’s why he’s saying to be continually being controlled by the Spirit means it’s a moment-to-moment activity, because you can not be controlled by the Spirit. But then again, you say, what does that mean? And again, you’re into all kinds of things. But the scripture in chapter three told us exactly what that means. The problem with the memorization of scripture is, if you memorize a verse of scripture and you don’t pay attention to its context, then the meaning means anything you want it to mean, and you can take a person who quotes scripture just just flowing out of his mouth, but the issue is well that’s nice, but I can get a computer to do that. Do you know what it means? There’s the issue. Say Bible, get up, read your Bible. We have people do that every morning. Get up and read their Bible just daily. That’s a habit of mine. I got my quiet time. I read the Bible, and you can do that for 50 years. Don’t have a clue what any of it means, but I read it every day. There’s something magical. See, if I read my Bible every day, I’m going to be okay with Jesus.” ~ Bob George

And we have to understand that you do not call something, rename something, so that you can call it something different than it is. You expose it for what it is. In my impression, when you’re dealing with things like depression, depression consists of things like worry. Worry is not a syndrome. It’s the opposite of faith. It’s called sin. How many of us do that? How many of in here worry? That’s all of us. Okay, don’t have worry. Yeah. So now let’s not call that a syndrome. You see. So what I’m getting at is to expose deeds of. Darkness is to just be very realistic in your life. Be sober-minded, as the Scripture says. Just call things what they are. Do we have to fear that? I don’t have to fear calling that sin. Why? He’s taken that away. I don’t have to fear condemnation by calling it sin. I’ll praise God for it because He’s taken that away. Is He condemning me for that sin? No. But I don’t know what he’s doing with my syndrome. I do know what he did with my sin. My syndrome, not sure. And so I’d rather call it what God calls it, wouldn’t you? Because that I know what he did with it. And so he’s telling us here that we need to expose sin for what it is, not sinners, sin, because if we’re out trying to expose sinners, then we’re gossippers and we’re slanderers. And the next time you’re going to be it. You’ve seen this in all of this presidential stuff, haven’t you? Because I’ll guarantee you, the ones pointing the finger are going to get it pointed back. Expose the sin, yeah. Expose the sinner. It’s not our responsibility.
Now it says, why is that? Because it’s shameful to even mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everybody exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is the light that makes everything visible, and that’s why it says, “Wake up, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. Be careful how you live, then, not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity. And why? Because the days are evil, and that is certainly true today. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is, and do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. But instead, be filled with the Spirit. What does it mean to be filled? The word to be filled in the Greek means to be controlled by. It means to be under the control of. Now, when you are drinking too much alcohol, what controls you? What controls you? Do any of you know? Experientially, alcohol controls you. That’s why it says to be filled with wine leads to debauchery. You’re going to be controlled by that. If you’re under the control of drugs, what controls you? Drug. That’s why they say you’re under the control of it. That’s why they call it mind-altering drugs. Is because it alters your mind and ultimately can control you, folks. If there’s one place in the world that we should be very sensitive to it. Should be our our brains. You know, when I understood that alcohol eats up brain cells, I came to conclusion I don’t have any to lose. And so, in as much as I can’t afford to lose any, it’s better for me to stay away from that, we have to understand that when you go under a controlled substance, you’re losing control right up here. That’s a very scary thing. Now it’s presented as fun; it is very frightening because you’re no longer able to function properly, and when that head goes, everything goes. So what it’s saying here is, don’t be drunk on wine. Now, did it say don’t drink wine? No, not necessarily. It just says don’t get drunk on it. Now you will see people who will talk about the evils of alcohol, and man, I can remember sitting there, how bear and my pastor saying, it’s just unthinkable that alcohol would ever touch the lips of our Savior, and I thought, wonder what they drank at that wedding feast. There’s no miracle of turning water into grape juice. A good can of Welch’s concentrate will do that. There’s no-I mean, I wouldn believe in God for doing that. Now, the instant fermentation, there’s a miracle, because fermentation takes time.
So don’t ever say that was turned into grape juice. A can of Welch’s will do that. Can can you say, I believe Jesus is God? Why? He dumped a can of Welch at that deal and turned it into grape juice. I’m sorry, that doesn’t work. So he’s not talking about not. He’s talking about abuses of things. You also are talking about not being a stumbling block. If I’m out trying to talk about Jesus to someone who’s a teetotaler, I’m not going to sit there and slop down a glass of wine in front of his face. If I’m talking to someone who believes in being a vegetarian, I’m not going to sit there and eat a pork chop in front of me. Or a ___ who might not believe in eating pork, I’m not going to sit there and eat a pork sandwich in front of me. Why? It’s a stumbling block. And so, in as much as we are to live in a newness of life, one of the criteria for living in the newness of life is not to be a stumbling block to someone. And quite frankly, that is the greatest guide to me. Is the reason for not doing something is because I don’t want to provide a stumbling block. What is that? That’s a law of love, and that’s what he says to function by, isn’t it? Is the law of love? Is that being a loving thing to do and to cause someone to stumble? And the answer to that is no, it isn’t. So don’t do it. But that’s your motivation.
Now, when it talks about to be controlled by the Spirit, what does that mean? See, if I read my Bible every day, I’m going to be okay with Jesus.
Well, He doesn’t want you to read the Bible. He wants you to know what the Bible means. Now, if reading it will help me to know what it means, read it. If listening will help you to know what it means. Listen, but my goodness, folks, to think that reading a Bible is a formula that’s going to keep me in some kind of good graces with God-that’s ridiculous. So the issue is that He wants you to know what the Scripture means, and only the Spirit of God can reveal what it means. And that’s why, if you’re not born again, you’ll never know what it means. You may not know what it says. You may sit and hear what it says, but you will never know what it means until the Spirit of God reveals it to you. And we’re told that in the Scripture, no eye has seen, no ear is heard, nor mind has conceived of those things that God has prepared for those who love him, but it must be revealed by the Spirit.
And so we have to understand that. So, in the third chapter, if you want to turn back, you’re going to see where it tells you exactly what it means to be filled with the Spirit, and if you get a hold of that, then you don’t have to, you don’t have to be led astray by all of this wild stuff that is going on in Christendom today under the auspices of this spirit-filled activity. Now go to chapter three, verse 14, for. This reason I kneel before the Father, from whom His whole family in heaven and earth derives its name. So He’s talking about I kneel before the Father, the whole family of God. Everyone who is a born again Christian gets His name from that, and I pray that out of His glorious riches that He may strengthen you with power through his spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. Folks, there’s only one way Christ can dwell in your hearts, and that’s through faith. And folks, faith isn’t saying, “I’m going to make up my own Jesus, and then, Lord, I’m going to expect you to perform. Faith is totally nothing less, nothing more, than understanding what God has already provided for you, and enter into it by faith. You don’t create God to do one earthly thing. If you do, you have become God, and He has become subservient to you. And so He wants Christ to be dwelling in our hearts through faith to know Him, and I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power together with all the saints-not power to go out and do something great for Jesus, but the power to understand something. Folks, why do we need God’s power to understand something? Because we’re dumb. We’re called sheep. There’s nothing dumber than a sheep. We are easily led astray, are we not? We’re easily tempted into things that we know are not right for us, are we not? We are not strong. We are weak, and Paul said, “Rejoice in that weakness, because it’ll keep you dependent upon Jesus, and in Him you’ll be strong as you ever want to be. Not in your own, but in Him.

And so, I need power to understand something because the enemy is always there trying to snatch it away, isn’t he? The enemy is always there saying, “Oh, that’s probably not true. Always, without exception, and folks, that quite frankly is what demonic activity is. A demon can never possess a Christian, but demonic activity can influence a Christian. And so that’s all that is is demonic activity, and that’s just in the world. It doesn look. It doesn’t have horns. It’s just influence. It’s just information that’s constantly coming to you to take you away from the truth of Jesus. That’s all it is. And so He says you need power to grasp something, and that’s the height and depth and width. I better read this: wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. So he wants us to know the height and depth and width and breadth of the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, it’s beyond human understanding. How come? So that here’s the result. You might be filled. Here’s that word, filled, controlled, to the measure, with all of the fullness of God. Now, think about it. Would it be possible to be filled to the measure? I mean, that’s filled up with all of the fullness of God, and not be filled with the Spirit? Would that be possible? Well, of course not. Why? Well, because the Spirit and filled to the fullness of God are one of the same. The Spirit of God is God, just like the Son is God and the Father is God. So to be filled with the Spirit, what does that mean in Chapter five? It told you in chapter three, but if you don’t bother to read chapter three and all you do is memorize chapter five, why then it just means whatever you want it to mean. And so you see people down there getting knocked over and and and rolling around and giggling and laughing and all that, and everybody said, “Man, Pentecost all over again. That’s ridiculous. That’s not what it means. It means to be controlled by love. Now, what did Jesus say? That if you don’t have love, what? You don’t have anything. In the end, there’ll only be three things that remain: faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is what love. People come out and say, “Oh, that when you speak in tongues-that means you’re spirit-filled. Well, then how come he said you’re a noisy gong, spirit-filled noisy gong? That’s hard to say to somebody. You’ll spiritual field, spirit-filled noisy gong, has no bearing to it at all, nothing at all to it. That’s totally different than being controlled by love, and that’s what Paul said in Corinth. He said, “Let me show you a better way. You’re all hung up on these gifts. Let me show you a better way. If I could talk in the tongues of men and angels, but I don’t have love, I don’t have anything. What’s he trying to say? Look, you could think you’re gifted beyond measure, but if you don’t have love, what good’s it going to do? What good is it going to do you to have the gift of teaching if you don’t have love? What good is it going to do to have the gift of encouragement if you don’t have love? What good is it going to do to have the gift of giving if you don’t have love? And that’s what he’s saying. Don’t get hung up on the gifts. What I want you to do is learn to love, then let the gifts flow from a heart of love. If you don’t have love, forget your gifts. So he’s saying to us that what does it mean to be filled or controlled by the Spirit? It means to be controlled by the love of God. Now, what was it that controlled Paul? It said the love of God constrains me or controls me. What was it that controlled Jesus? The love of God, what is to control you and me? The love of God. So to be filled with the Spirit means to be controlled by love. Now, how many can say I am a control by love person? Man, you just look at me and just God’s love just oozes out of every place you can see it, every man of the day.
Now that’s what it means to be a spirit-filled Christian, spirit-controlled Christian would be someone controlled by love 24 hours a day. Anybody you know like that? I don’t either. The only person I know like that was who? Jesus. And why did the only thing that came out of Jesus was the fruit of the Spirit? Because that’s all it was in Him. And until we yield to Him, we will never produce, bear the fruit of love. So, what does it mean to be filled of the Spirit? Means to be controlled by love. Is that clear now? Okay.
Now let’s say what else it says. That speak to one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord. Always what? Giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Folks, what should the bulk of our prayer be? Our conversation to God. What should it be? Thank you. What else can you say? He’s done it all. I mean, I quite frankly don’t know what else to say to the Lord. Understanding God’s grace just ruined my prayer life. Because when you don’t, what are you doing? You’re always asking Him for something, aren’t you? Just always begging, asking, and 90% of what you’re asking is already giving you. But when you understand that you’ve already been given everything that you need for life and godliness. I don’t know of anything else to do except what he says to continually, always be given thanks to God for everything in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I don’t know how else to pray. People talk about formulas. I don’t have any formulas for prayer. All I know how. Do to the Lord is just continually say thank you, and basically thank you for putting up with me. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your mercy, your kindness. Thank you, thank you, thank you. In all things, give thanks, for this is what? The will of God concerning you in Christ Jesus. So we can talk about these long highfalutin prayers, but quite frankly, I don’t know how to pray long highfalutin prayers. All I know how to do is to say thank you. Oh, I can give God some ideas every now and then. Can’t you give Him some suggestions as to how I’d like Him to do something? But when I do that, I know how stupid that is, and He does too. But He knows sometimes I’m stupid, so we’re we’re on common ground, and we just have to we just have to understand that, don’t we? But again, look at the mindset, Lord if it’s Your will, I sure would like to see this come about. But I’m going to thank You one way or the other. People will get into planning. You say, “How do you plan? You say, “We don’t. Oh, we make some plans for function, but for results, no way. Why? Results are always in God’s hands. That’s why people. Well, we were talking to some builders and stuff the other day. One of the Bible studies that Bob Christopher teaches in the morning, and we were talking about that because a lot of times, you know, you you you when you’re planning, why you plan how much money you’re going to make, how many sales you’re going to make. Well, that’s results. Now you can do that if you want to, but man, if you hit it, you’re proud as punch, and if you miss it, you’re self condemning, and if you exceed it, you’re really proud. If you just hit it right on the head, why then you wish that you would have bid a little higher. So I mean, there’s all kinds. The Bible says, “Don’t compare yourself by yourself. If you do, you’re a fool, and that’s what happens. Nothing wrong with that, but what can you plan? You can plan function. What do I plan on doing tomorrow? If the Lord’s will, I’m going to get up and work as under the Lord. What are the results that going to be? Don’t have a clue. But I do know something: that if you get up and you work as under the Lord, and you give it your all, and if you’re not lazy, that you’re going to be blessed.
People will get into planning. You say, “How do you plan? You say, “We don’t. Oh, we make some plans for function, but for results, no way. Why? Results are always in God’s hands. That’s why people well, we were talking to some builders and stuff the other day. I do know that, and the best employees in the world ought to be Christians. It’s not always the case, but that ought to be. We ought to be the hardest working people on the face of the earth. There’s no need. There’s no room for laziness in the heart of a Christian. I can plan a conference. What are the results that going to be? Don’t know. How many people are going to be there? Don’t know. Don’t care. There’s six. We’ll have a ball teaching six. If you’re 600, that’ll be fine too. And that’s if you live your life that way. Is there any stress connected with that? No, there’s any stress connected with it. And God doesn want us living in stress, and so we can put goals. But what I’m saying, if we do, put hang on to them loosely, and plan and function, plan your function, but not the results. I’m going to go out to Hollywood, and I’m going to become a movie star. Well, you got a pretty dumb goal. You may go to Hollywood, but you may become something different than a movie star. So we have to realize that, folks. That we realize we’ve been given everything we need. Let God direct our steps, and we’ll spend our lives really saying thank you.
Now it says to learn to submit to one another, out of what? Reverence for Christ. Why should we submit to one another, out of reverence for Christ? Now, what does that mean? Listen to each other. Submit to one another means you could possibly, just possibly, have a better idea than me. Now I know that’s hard to think, but there is a slim possibility that you may know more about something than I do, and most of us function in that latter, don’t we? You know, I got my idea. Don’t confuse me with facts. My mind’s made up, and and I’m going to live that way, he says. “No, submit to each other, listen to one another, yield to one another, hear one another. Basically, if I was to put a word on that, it’s listen. You take time to listen to other people’s attitudes. Get rid of this dogmatic.” I know best, because we don’t. I mean, think about it, brother. The best thing to wear is red. Well, you wear red. You wear red. Few of you have red, but this would be one place if all of you had red on, especially me. look like Santa Claus up here. Red’s good for you. You like that color? That’s fine. Some people like green. Some people like other things. You can’t sit there and say, “Oh, this is it. We’re dogmatic. And so we have to leave room for expression, don’t we? Men and women have different needs altogether. They are different breeds, and we have to understand that. I say marriage is like the moon. Both of you are looking at it, but one’s looking at it from the dark, and the other’s from the light. But you’re looking at the same moon, and one’s saying it’s light. You say no. It’s dark. Men and women look at things differently, altogether, and that’s good. You can have unity in the midst of diversity, but you have to understand there is diversity. And sometimes I wonder what plane Amy’s on, and she’s wondering if I ever got off of this one. But seriously, we just look at things differently about things, don’t you? Now that’s why it says to submit to one another. Now we have a tendency to forget this one when we read the next ones of wives submit to your husbands, because you see, before submitting to the husband is submitting to one another.
