Offer Your Bodies As A Living Sacrifice: The True Temple Of God

~ Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.” Romans 12:1

When we read Romans 12:1, it hits on something deeply profound about what God considers a temple. Think about how things used to be. Back in the day, worship and sacrifice were entirely tied to a physical place. For the ancient Ἰουδαῖοι, that meant going to the tabernacle or the temple in Jerusalem. That was the center of everything, a physical building where priests offered animal sacrifices to atone for sins. But Paul completely flips the script here. He uses all the familiar words of that ancient temple system—offering, sacrifices, holy, pleasing—but he points them in a brand new direction. The location of worship is no longer a building made of stone sitting here beneath the Firmament; the ultimate place of worship is actually you and me.

If you look at 1 Corinthians 6:19, it asks if we realize that our own bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. If God’s Spirit lives inside of us, that makes our physical bodies His holy temple. In the historical temple, sacrifices were dead. An animal was slain, put on the altar, and its part was finished. When Paul urges us to be living sacrifices, he isn’t asking us to strive or try to do something harder on our own strength. Instead, it is simply about allowing Christ to live in and through us. It is the Holy Spirit doing the work, not us.

Being a living sacrifice means we are in an ongoing, continuous state of yielding. It means our hands, our feet, our mind, and our voice are constantly handed over for the Holy Spirit to use. Just like the ancient sacrifices had to be without blemish, our everyday actions are made holy by His presence operating within us. You essentially become the altar, the sacrifice, and the temple all rolled into one. Every time the Spirit leads you to speak with grace, act with integrity at work, or help someone in need, and you simply yield to that leading, you are living out that sacrifice.

Paul calls this our spiritual, or even our most reasonable, service of worship. When we really think about the massive mercy God has shown us, the only logical response is to get out of the way and hand our entire lives over to Him. Worship gets taken completely out of the box of just singing a song on a specific day of the week and is brought right into the dirt and grit of daily living. How we treat people, how we handle our jobs, and what we do with our physical bodies—that is our actual worship service. True worship is a life of continuous surrender, stepping back and letting the Holy Spirit live out His will through our physical temple however He sees fit.

In the end, our greatest act of worship is simply stepping back and letting God use the temple He has already claimed.

But you never used the W word, and I mean worship at that. So what I’m going to do, Bob, I’ll let you comment on that. I’m going to hang up and listen to you on the radio. God bless you.”

“Thanks, Dale. Well, it it tells us in the in the early scriptures, the early church met daily for the apostles’ teaching and fellowship and prayer. And so, if you really want to know how the church is to be conducted, go to its origin, and that’s what they did. They met daily for the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, and prayer, and that’s exactly what we do. Now, worship is not in that lineup because worship isn’t something you do on when you come to church. It’s a part of it, but worship should be what you’re doing every day of your life. Worship in the scriptures in the New Testament is not what people think. It’s not singing praise songs. It’s not holding up your hands. It’s not piously keeping them in your lap. It is making your body available to the living Christ who lives in you to live His life in and through you, and then He said, “That is your reasonable act of worship. Don’t be conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. And so, it’s to what worship is is making your body available to the living Christ to live His life in and through you. I beseech you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to make your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable in the sight of God, which is your reasonable act of worship. You see, we put worship down and singing praise songs and all that type of thing. Well, you don’t have to be saved to do that. Worship is what you do on Sunday? No, you don’t have to be saved to even go to church on Sunday. But I want to tell you, you have to be saved for the living Christ to be living His life in and through you, and to make your body available to Him to do so. And that’s why I think in the New Testament took on a brand new, a brand new definition of what worship is. It isn’t something that can be copied by the lost. It’s something that can only be done by the saved. And so Sunday morning, you’re not coming to worship God in some way. You’re coming to make your body available to the living Christ to live His life in and through us. And if that takes place, obviously while we’re there, but my goodness, what a sad thing to think that the only time that you worship God is on a Sunday morning, especially an hour a week. If at the most you would be doing what people think worship is, quite frankly, wouldn’t probably be any more than six minutes of praise songs, and so that worship is just not what what we think it is in the scripture. It’s born again people being available to living Christ to live His life through us. I hope that helped, brother. Thanks for calling.” ~ Bob George
