Forgive Yourself, Because God Has Already Forgiven You

~ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:

“For Your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. ~ Romans 8:35-39

The Pride of Unforgiveness: Why Refusing to Forgive Yourself Exalts Human Judgment Above God’s Verdict

We often view refusing to forgive ourselves as a mark of deep remorse, humility, or spiritual sensitivity. We carry heavy burdens of past failures, telling ourselves, “I know God might forgive me, but I just can’t forgive myself.”

On the surface, this sounds pious. But under the light of Scripture and divine jurisprudence, refusing to forgive yourself is actually a subtle form of spiritual pride. It is telling the Sovereign Judge that His verdict isn’t enough, and that your personal court of self-judgment holds a higher, stricter standard than the cross of Calvary.

1. Exalting Your Court Above God’s Bench

When Jesus hung on the cross and declared, “It is finished!” (John 19:30), the global ledger of debt (katallage) was permanently balanced and liquidated (hilasmos). The Sovereign Judge officially dropped the courtroom charges against the world.

When you refuse to forgive yourself, you are essentially declaring:

“God’s infinite payment may be enough for Him, but it’s not enough for me. My personal standard of justice is higher than God’s.”

To treat your own emotional penance or ongoing self-loathing as necessary is to treat human feelings as more authoritative than the shed blood of the Kinsman-Redeemer (Goel). God’s level of forgiveness is infinitely greater than human forgiveness—bringing His verdict down to our level of self-condemnation is a tragic travesty.

2. Self-Absorption Masquerading as Humility

Endless guilt and self-condemnation feel humble, but in reality, they trap you in an exhausting loop focused entirely on self rather than on Christ.

The Transactional Fallacy: Thinking that sitting in the defendant’s chair and beating yourself up somehow pays for your mistake is a form of self-righteousness.
The Reality: No amount of human regret, sorrow, or self-punishment can add a single drop of value to what Jesus already completed once and for all.

3. Agreeing with the Sovereign Verdict (Homologeo)

True biblical confession (homologeo) does not mean begging for clearance or drowning in self-recrimination. It literally means Socratic agreement—saying the exact same thing as the Judge.

When you stumble or reflect on past failures, biblical alignment looks like this:

Acknowledge the fact: Agree with God that the action was independent self-will.
Agree with the verdict: Agree that the debt was already 100% paid, forgiven, and removed by Christ at the cross.
Step into freedom: Stop trying to be a harsher judge than God, and thank Him for His completed victory.

Step Out of the Defendant’s Chair

If the Almighty Creator of the universe has cleared the ledger and remembers your debt no more, who are you to hold a grudge against yourself?

Dethrone the pride of self-judgment. Put away the illusion that your self-condemnation carries more weight than Calvary, and rest completely in the finished verdict of King Jesus.

Glenn asks about Paul’s reference to widows breaking a pledge in 1 Timothy 5 and shares that guilt over past sexual behavior has troubled him for years; Bob says the pledge’s meaning is uncertain, suggests the condemnation may refer to judgment by others, and emphasizes his belief in Christ’s forgiveness and grace. Patsy asks how her family should respond to her granddaughter’s same-sex relationship; Bob urges the family to express love while setting boundaries around behavior in their home, and presents his interpretation of the issue through his reading of Scripture.

“Well, Glenn, the latter is what you’re talking about in the first place. You’ve been living in disobedience to the Lord all these years by not believing what He said when he said I went to a cross to take away your sins, and you’re placing an awful lot of emphasis on your words instead of on his word. What he said was, yeah, you may have said that, but that is a sin that I took away at the cross 2000 years ago, and and never to see it again from the eyes of God, and so you’re sitting there and being beating yourself to death. Hopefully, maybe this is not the way it is, but for 17 years, beating yourself to death over the fact of of committing fornication with a girl that you were hopefully planning on marrying, but evidently didn’t work out for some reason, and which was sin. But where, what did God do with that sin? You see, there’s the problem in religion. It’s I sin. What do I do? And in Christianity, it’s you sinned and already did. Already took care of that. I already took that sin from the eyes of God. That’s what I went to a cross for. I didn’t come there to get beat up, and and having my skin torn off of my body for a person to play around with that forgiveness. That is final. When I cried out from the cross, it’s finished. That’s what I meant. And so you have to learn to walk by faith, and then instead of turning to Christ, you turn to drugs in order to get through the day. Christ is who helps you through the day. When you turn to drugs, you’ve turned to an alternate mind-altering deal instead of renewing your mind, of altering your mind. So there were some mistakes that you made there along the way, Glenn. But sounds like you’re getting back on your feet again. But you’ve got to realize that if Christ, if you’re truly born again, then the living Christ lives in you, and He’s there to guide you into all truth and to take the things of the Lord Jesus Christ and make them known unto you. He is there to show you truth against error, but you’re never going to know truth until you study the Word of God. Evidently, you’re you’re doing that, or you wouldn’t be coming up with these kind of questions, which is good. If you don’t know what the real dollar bill looks not looks like, you’re you’re not going to know whether you’re looking at counterfeit or the real thing. That’s why you study the real thing. You can spot counterfeit. So there were some things there in your early experience there, Glenn, that either some false teaching that you had has kept you off base. It’s kept you off kilter. You need to stand as strong as horseradish, brother, and you need to stand in the grace of God and to realize I am a child of the living God, and and the reason I am is not because I’ve been a good person, or a bad person, or a good person or a bad person or a no person. It’s because of what Christ Jesus did for me, that Christ Jesus saw me and in His mercy, and Glenn, don’t don’t ever negate that mercy. The mercy of God is the most important thing we can grab a hold of. God is merciful. He looked out on us and our condition and said, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they’re doing. That’s merciful. That’s a merciful statement. They don’t know what they’re doing now. These are the people just beat the daylights out of him. And so, what we need to do is to learn to stand, as it says, stand in the grace of God, with the full knowledge that my sins have been taken away from the from from the eyes of God once and for all and forever, which Jesus did at the cross, and He was entered into my spiritual death with me, so that I could enter into His resurrection with Him. And when I came to Him, I came to Him for life. There’s a consequence to sin called death, and the solution to death is life.

And the only life available to me was the resurrected life of Christ Jesus, and I have accepted that life, and I’m a born again, forgiven, forever, eternally saved person. And stand in that, and don’t let those voices come in with all of these doubts, and all of this other stuff, and to realize that no truth is what’s going to set you free. Pilling going to set you free. Counseling isn’t going to set you free. Jesus is going to set you free. Truth, truth. Anything a counselor can do. Of course, I think we’ve gone counsel nuts in the Christian world, a counselor, if he’s got, if he’s worth his salt, is just going to lead you to the one who can set you free, and that’s Jesus. Just lead you to the Word of God. So you grab a hold and you hang on to that, Glenn, and and you say, from this day forth, I’m going to stand in the grace of God, I’m going to stand to that. Nothing can separate me from the love of God. Trials can’t. You’ve already been through trials. That didn’t separate you. Tribulation. You’ve been through that. That didn’t separate you. Knowing all these things, he said, “You’re more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus, for I’m convinced that nothing can separate me from the love of God, that is in Christ Jesus, my Lord. And if Christ before me, then who can be against me? So you put all that guilt because He came to save you from your sin and guilt. You put that guilt behind you, and start walking in the grace of God, and take this marriage that you have today, and praise God for it, and the two of you live a happy life together.” ~ Bob George
