Live in Dependency on Jesus Always

~ For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” Romans 1:17

~ Trust in Jesus moment by moment, for Faith is from beginning to end. We can’t change anything of the past, and we do not know exactly what is going to happen in the future, and that means in the very next moment of our day, and so we are to live in the present. And living in the present, we are to allow the Holy Spirit to direct our paths every moment of the day. So walk by faith in His perfect love for us, who lives in us if we are in Christ Jesus. Learn to listen to Him, and depend on Him for ALL things. And He will make your path straight. “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:6

Bob George addresses a caller named Mark from Kitchener, Ontario, who is struggling with depression despite being a believer for 10 years. Bob emphasizes that depression is caused by thinking depressing thoughts and suggests focusing on renewing the mind rather than trying to change emotions directly. He identifies two basic attitudes that lead to depression: misplaced dependency and unrealistic expectations. Bob advises Mark to trust in God’s love and control, live in the present, and rely on God’s promises for the future. He also offers Mark a tape series on depression to help him better understand and address his condition.

“The question to ask on there Mark, it’s not, how do I get rid of my depression? Because depression is an emotion, but it’s caused by thinking. So that’s the problem. Is everyone’s trying to get your emotion changed instead of getting your thinking changed. So you’ve asked the right question Mark is, how do we get your mind renewed? Well, depression always started by a depression, a thing that happened and you started thinking depressing thoughts about it. If you’re having bad times, instead of thanking the Lord and moving on, why you start camping on all the bad things that are happening, but all depression again, Mark, starts with two basic attitudes, wrong attitude. One is misplaced dependency, and the other is an unrealistic expectation. If you came into this world with an unrealistic expectation that I’m going to get married, everything’s going to go, Well, I’m going to become a Christian. All my kids are going to be great. I’m a Christian now, and God doesn’t want a Christian not to be prosperous, so I’m going to praise God and be prosperous. That’s an unrealistic expectation. It’s a lie. And so what we have to deal with is, where are those unrealistic expectations in your life that kicked off and misplaced dependency. So Mark when, when you’re functioning, you have to say there’s some basic foundational thinking patterns that have taken place that have caused an unrealistic expectation, and everything ought to go great. A lot of that was taught in Christianity. Come to Christ, everything’s going to be great. Never have problems again. Well, you’re a sitting duck for depression. If you think that a misplaced dependency, instead of depending upon Christ, you’re depending upon something else. God created us to be dependent upon God, the Father. Jesus, while he was here on Earth, although he was God, set aside that prerogative and walked as a Man and said, I don’t do anything unless the Father tells me to do it, and I don’t say anything unless he tells me to say it. In other words, the object of his dependency was upon the Father in heaven. And he said, As the Father sent me, so, send I you. So whenever we refuse to live in dependency upon Jesus, why? We’re forced. We have no option to grab a hold of dependency on something else, because we were made to be dependent people, and so we’ll shift it someplace else, money, relationships, all of that type of thing. So those are the basic foundations that throw people off, that make them sitting ducks for depression. So if your premise is off up here, and then you run into an insult or an injury or rejection of some kind, which we all do, and we all insult and reject other people as well, but we all are going to run into that sooner or later, and so then the issue is, how do I respond to this? Well, how I respond to an insult or an injury rejection is totally relation, is totally dependent upon my unrealistic expectation and misplaced dependencies. Have I got my dependency where it belongs in Christ, and my expectations as a result of understanding truth out of the Word of God, and I run into an insult or an injury rejection, my response to that is going to be, well, if God is for me, who can be against me, that God is in control, and he will cause, regardless what I’m going through, He’ll cause it to work together for my good. Sooner or later, he doesn’t cause bad to be good, but he’ll cause it to work together for good. So therefore, when I run into this adverse circumstance, instead of bearing myself under fear and anger, which is the response that you have when you’re disappointed and you don’t know in that seed bed of disappointment to go saying, God, thank you, and I’m going to trust you. Instead of that, I get angry and I get fearful, and that fear and anger, intermingled together, begin to filter down into self pity. And the more self pity you have, the more depression you have, the more depression you have, the more self pity you have, and you go down into that spiral. Well, ultimately, you let that, you let that ferment long enough you can get down to the point of hopelessness and despair and become suicidal, even though you’re a Christian. So you have to realize that why you’re in that shape is because a certain thing or a series of circumstances happen, adverse circumstances in your life that you responded to not in faith, but responded to in fear and anger and self pity. ~ Bob George
