Classic Christianity – The Book of John P83 (08-15-23)

Jesus Going to the Cross Was Preparatory for Salvation, But is Not Salvation!

~ Most people think the cross is what saves a person. As though someone coming to the cross and asking for forgiveness of sins is going to save them by getting their sins forgiven by God. That is simply a lie of Satan. For the cross was preparatory for salvation but is NOT salvation. We cannot emphasize this enough, Jesus dying on the cross for the sins of the whole world is God extending forgiveness to everyone. He and He alone, God in the flesh, forgave the sins of the entire world. He who knew no sin, became sin for us, so that in Him, we might become the righteousness of God. How does one become “In Him?” By faith in Jesus, that he and he alone did it all for you personally. Your confession booth or confessing sins directly to God doesn’t save you. Your Catholic or Protestant religion doesn’t save you. Your saying the Lord’s prayer over and over doesn’t save you. Your prayers to Mary don’t save you. Your doing good works doesn’t save you. Your false understanding of 1 John 1:9 doesn’t save you. Your baptism doesn’t save you. Nothing of those things save you.

So, what is salvation? Salvation is the imputation of Life in Him. When a person places faith in Jesus, God in the flesh, for having forgiven them personally all of their sins at the cross, the Holy Spirit comes to indwell that person and give them His Eternal Life. That life of the Holy Spirit will never leave you nor forsake you, no matter what. Nothing can separate you from the love of God once your are In Christ and He is in you. Rest in that fact today. Quit making a mockery of the cross by continually asking for what God has already done. Your Sins Have Been Forgiven. Believe it. Place faith in His finished work on the cross for you. Place faith in HIM today if you haven’t done so and He will make you a child of the Living God forever.

~ “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

~ “And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas: (who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.) Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them. But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.” Luke 23:18-24

~ “For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!” Romans 5:10

~ “And you can imagine, if you will, for a moment, Barabbas as well as Jesus knew full well what the custom was, they knew full well that you could release one person for crucifixion. And you can almost hear Barabbas, who was sitting back in a prison someplace, not hearing what was going on outside, and all of a sudden, they hear Barabbas Barabbas. And he’s thinking, this is my day, this is it. But they weren’t saying Barabbas, to crucify, they were saying Barabbas to free. Why? They wanted to kill Jesus, why? He didn’t agree with their orthodoxy. He didn’t agree with their religion, he didn’t agree with their interpretation of religion. They’re harsh, mean, vindictive, religion. He believed in love. He believed in underneath the skin, of getting the people down here where we live instead of this outward facade that we live behind. And so he sentenced him to death. And we’re told that that was at noon, but the six hour we read it a Bible, which is 12 o’clock. And that’s when the sentence, sentencing took place.

For the next hours, Jesus hung on a cross, it came down to a point where this was a special holiday. And we’ll get into that in a moment. And they did not want them to be hanging on a cross on the Sabbath. And so they ask that they allow them to break their legs, that would be premature death on a cross. Because death on a cross, you can hang there for two to three days suffocating, and you’re lifting yourself up to get air and breaking the legs, you can’t lift yourself up. So you just hang there and suffocate. So because this was done on a Thursday, and they did not want him to be hanging on a cross over their Sabbath, they asked for permission to break the legs of the of the thieves and of Jesus. And so they broke the legs of the thieves on the sides of Jesus. But when they came to Jesus, to break his legs, he was already dead. They couldn’t understand that, because you don’t die that quickly. So his death was not brought about really by the effects of crucifixion it was, quite frankly, I believe, when you see, the spear was stuck into his side and out came blood and water. Some doctors will tell you that as a sign of a broken heart. And so they did not break the legs of Jesus which followed up with the prophecy, prophecies that not one bone in his body would be broken. The prophecy from the Old Testament. This happened on Thursday. He was buried on Thursday, Thursday night.” ~ Bob George

And he spent great sums of time guys, these are a lot of instructions. That all took place on this Wednesday. And I want you to get this straight Wednesday, all day, all day on Wednesday, we’re going to go through the chronology of the cross. All day on Wednesday. He was teaching his disciples about these things. And he talked about the Holy Spirit of God in 16. And 17, he prayed his priestly prayer when he prayed for all of his disciples and not only for them, but for us as well. Now after the day of teaching on Wednesday, they had supper together on Wednesday evening. And after that supper, it says that they moved over to the garden, they went over to the Mount of Olives, which was about a mile and a half from where they held their last supper together. And where Judas went out to betray Jesus. That was on a Wednesday evening. Later that night, in the Mount of Olives, Judas through his betrayal led people with lanterns it talks about which shows you it was in the evening, that evening. And they came and arrested Jesus. That was afterwards that was that evening they arrested Christ. They took him to the home of the high priest who was Annas and Annas questioned him. And I believe there was torture that took place because he was hated by the Jewish leadership. Now guys, Jesus was a Hebrew. He was not a Gentile never has been a Gentile. He was a Hebrew. And all of the leadership would be on the par today with what you would, what you would refer to today is, as the you will see very orthodox Jews, have you seen them, they’d wear in the black, they, they’re very dedicated, they they don’t drive anyplace on Sabbath, they walk, they honor the Sabbath. If you go to Israel, they got those curly Q’s out their heads, and all that kind of stuff. They’re very orthodox. Well, there are other areas of Jewish religion, got your conservative branch, they don’t like orthodox. The guides that we’ve had over in Israel couldn’t stand the Orthodox. So you got other branches to other branches of Judaism. And it’s amazing to me that no one hates the leaders of those things. And they were doing nothing different than what Jesus did. He was going up against the Orthodox and saying you’re a bunch of phonies. You’re all clean on the outside, but you’re dirty on the inside. You’re preaching stuff that you yourself, do not even understand or do. You’re a phony. And so there was Jesus one of their own, just like an orthodox over here today, and then a conservative saying you’re a phony. And they decided to kill him. They didn’t like him. They didn’t like their own. This is not a Jew not liking a gentile or vice versa. They didn’t like their own he was a Hebrew. But they didn’t like what he taught because he got underneath the skin of the phony. And you know, you don’t like people that get underneath your skin when you’re phony. When you’re phony, you become a good phony. And you become a proficient phony. And you become a great actor, have you not, and you pray to God that no one ever finds out what’s going on underneath the skin. And someone coming along and identifying what’s going on underneath the skin. It irritates you don’t like him, he knows me. And they hated Jesus because of that. Hated him, one of their own, not anti semitic, one of their own. He came into his own, and his own received Him not, but to as many as received Him. To them, he gave the right to do what? Become a child of God. And so Jesus was arrested by people who hated him. This was not all Jews, any more than a leader of a country, putting people into war that everybody wants to be in war. But it was the leadership, the Hebrew leadership that were the interpreters of the Word of God. And they were the Orthodox and they hated him. And so the high priest would have been the hater of the haters. And so they took him that evening, he went to Annas and then Caiaphas through the night, they would have been talking to him, badgering him, and ultimately would have placed him in what is called an isolation hole. And if you go over to Israel today, and you go into the home of Annas or Caiaphas, you’ll see that it’s a hole that’s about this wide, goes down into the ground, 12 15 feet, and they would take a man and stuff him down into that hole where he couldn’t move, standing up all night long. All night long. Jesus hadn’t been asleep since Tuesday, taught his disciples all day Wednesday, had a Wednesday meal was arrested, taken into Annas house and into Caiaphas. House, tortured, beaten, stuffed in a hole all night long.

The next day, this now is Thursday morning. They left Caiaphas’ house. And I said early in the morning. This is Thursday morning now, early in the morning, they took him to Pilate’s house. And there we’ve heard the recordation of what Pilate interviewed him and he said I found no fault of this man and why are you bringing him to me? You’re the one who has a problem with him. And he say Well, the reason I’m bringing him to you as a Gentile person is because we Jews can’t kill a man and we want you to kill it. We just want to initiate it. But we want you to carry out the dirty work. Well, Pilate didn’t want to do that. And if you’re following along, you’ll see in the Gospel of John doesn’t record, Pilate sending Jesus over to Herod. But here they went from Caiaphas house, beat up, tortured all night long, no sleep, went over from Caiaphas’ house, went over to Pilate’s, Pilate in Luke 23:1 sends him over to Herod that’s across town. Herod then sends him back to Pilate, that’s also across town. And finally, at noon, Pilate sentences Jesus to death and that can be picked up. In chapter 19, verse 14, sentenced Jesus to death finally gave up. Pilate was weak, Pilate in order to not have an insurrection on the part of the Jewish people, on days of holidays, gave in and said, first of all, I can release one prisoner to you. How about Barabbas he was a hated insurrectionist. They said we don’t want Barabbas we want Jesus. We want Jesus. And you can imagine, if you will, for a moment, Barabbas as well as Jesus knew full well what the custom was, they knew full well that you could release one person for crucifixion.

He was buried on Thursday, Thursday night.

Now let me explain to you why this is so. We celebrate Good Friday. Thursday it was called the day of preparation. It was a Jewish holiday. It was called the day of preparation. It was the day when it was the responsibility of the Jews to go into their house and have what you and I would call a spring house cleaning. You clean out everything that has leaven in it. Even if you had cooked bread recently. You had to clean that out. because the smell of leaven would still be there. And so the day of preparation was the day in which they cleaned out their homes, cleaned them out thoroughly of anything that had leaven in it. Because the next day, which was the first, the first day of the Feast of the unleavened bread, and as we’ll read in just a moment is called a special Sabbath. As a matter of fact, turn with me right now, if you will, to verse chapter 19. And we’ll just kind of cover some of these things. As we’re going. First of all, look up into fourth verse 14. In chapter 19, are we all together? You’ll see up there and if you mark your Bible, you might want to circle these things. You’ll see it was the day of preparation of Passover week, and it was the sixth hour, which is noon. That’s what we just talked about. That’s where the sentence was placed upon Jesus, preparation day. Now, if you’ll go down to verse 31, we all together? This was the day of preparation. And the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Now guys in the Hebrew history, there were many Sabbath. A Sabbath was not just from Friday to Saturday, Friday night to Saturday night, there were many Sabbath’s and on this day, it is called a special Sabbath. And the special Sabbath was the day, not the day of preparation, but it was the first day of the celebration of the feast of the Unleavened Bread. That was called a special Sabbath that was not on Saturday as we know it today that would have been on Friday, the special Sabbath.

And so the the special Sabbath excuse me, the special Sabbath was the day of preparation. And the regular Sabbath was on the feast first day the Feast of Tabernacles. I hope I’m not confusing you here. So let me go back to this. Thursday, the day that Jesus was crucified was called the day of preparation. Now Isn’t it strange that he was crucified on the day of preparation? When the cross was the preparation for the salvation through the resurrection? Isn’t that strange? Never hear about it, never hear talked about the day of preparation is the preparation of God for salvation on Easter, on Sunday, and so on that day of preparation was when he was crucified. And again, as I said, this preparation day was when the Hebrews came and cleaned their house out of any kind of leaven. Why? Remember what it says it takes just a speck of leaven to do what? Spoil the whole loaf. So they got rid of all, all of the leaven. And so we see there that this was the day now was a day of prepper of preparation. And the next day was a special Sabbath, not the Sabbath that we know of on Saturday, but a special Sabbath, the day before. And because he did not want the bodies left on across during the Sabbath, so you have a special Sabbath, and then you have the Sabbath. Now, what is the Sabbath? That’s the Saturday. What was the special Sabbath? That was the Friday. When was he crucified? Thursday. When was he buried? Thursday. Remember the prophecy that he said? That just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale, for what? Three what? Days. And what? Three nights. How in the world could he have been crucified on Friday, when he had only been in the in the ground for two days, two nights? He was crucified on Thursday, which was the day of preparation, the next day was a special Sabbath. That’s why we’ve gotten that confused. Because instead of looking at a special Sabbath, for what it was a celebration of the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, we look at it as the Sabbath. But here we’ve got a special Sabbath, and the Sabbath. And so they asked Pilate to have his legs broken, and the bodies taken down. And we’re told that the soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man had been crucified, and then those of the other. So guys, that is the chronology of Jesus. It’s the chronology of what happened on the days prior to and the day of, and the days after the crucifixion, and the death in the burial of Christ Jesus, Are we all kind of together on that now? It’s not that it is possibly that important. But on the other hand, it is important. And it’s important for us to know what took place during those times.

Now, if we can, can we go back to 18:28? Now we’re told there, and now that you kind of know the whole chronology there, the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas. And this now is in the morning, this would be Thursday morning. The Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor, and by now it was early morning, and that would have been very early in the morning. In order to avoid ceremonial uncleanliness, the Jews did not want to enter the palace. In other words, they didn’t want to be ceremonially unclean. They just wanted to kill a man. Guys, is that hypocrisy? Or is that hypocrisy? They wanted to be able to eat the Passover. So Pilate came out and ask him, What charges are you bringing against this man? And their answer to that pretty wise to me. If he were not a criminal, they replied, we would not have handed him over to you. It’s kind of kind of arrogant to me. And Pilate said, Take Him yourselves and judging by your own law, we don’t want to judge you. And they’re answered that we don’t have any right to execute anybody. In other words, we don’t want a trial. We’ve already tried him. We already have a verdict. We just need your stamp of approval. We’re not interested in a trial. We’ve already determined that he’s guilty and we already have determined that he needs to be executed. We just want you to carry it out. Well, it said this happened. So at the words of Jesus had spoken, indicating the kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled. Pilate went back inside of the palace and he summoned Jesus and ask Him, Are you the king of the Hebrews? And Jesus said, is that your own idea or did others talk to you about me? And Pilate reply, am I a Hebrew? Look at this guys. It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. So guys, let’s not let people walk around saying we had no responsibility in the death of Jesus and you get some Jewish leaders today who cannot handle the fact that they just might have had a bad guy in their midst. As if having a bad guy in your midst. Have any of us escape that? Sometimes guys, the pride of man is such that it says, Don’t you ever say anything about my race of people. Don’t you ever say thing because you say something about him that reflects on me nonsense. doesn’t reflect anything on me. People talked about slave owners back in the days of slavery, it had nothing to do with me at all. I was against it, then. And I guess it now not have been against it then if I was there. And so I’m not insulted when someone says that white people were slave owners. I’m not defending white people. They were stupid. They were sinful. They were idiots. And so we that has nothing to do. We don’t want to stand up defending something because of our race. Or because of our religion. Where it didn’t make a difference whether the Pope’s right or wrong. I’m a Catholic. I’m that’s nonsense. If someone’s wrong, they’re wrong. I don’t care whether he’s the Pope, or whether he’s Peter. I mean, I don’t we don’t seem to have any problem talking about Peter denying the Lord. Seem to me he is should have been more important than any of us. We don’t have a trouble talking about that. But that was Oh, Peter. So all of these ideas, guys that we come up with where we got to get rid of those, then we’re talking about you and me right now today. And I don’t have an obligation for my ancestors, I have an obligation today to love people. And I got a privilege of loving people. I don’t care what my grandfather did, or anything else. Didn’t know him, or great grandfather. And so he said, is that your own idea? Or did others talk to you about me? Say my Hebrew, he said, It’s your people. It’s the Hebrew people. And your chief priests, the Jewish chief priests who handed you over to me. So who initiated the crucifixion of Jesus? The Jews. Who carried it out? The Gentiles. But in the final analysis who killed Jesus? Me and you, my sin killed Jesus, and your sin, killed Jesus, who carried it out, really didn’t make any difference. The Jews were a part of it and the Gentiles were a part of it. That means the whole world was responsible for the death of Jesus Christ. Now that annihilates the idea of people in all of their brilliance walking around calling Jews, Jesus killers. Because the Jews weren’t Jesus killers, the Gentiles were Jesus killers, the Jews were Jesus initiators of death, all involved, but with different things. But you see how the division has been caused between Jew and Gentile, by people in their ignorance, saying things like this. When they had nothing at all to do with it, that was people that 1000 years ago. Jesus said, My kingdom is not of this world. If it were my say, servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews, arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place. You are a king then? Pilate said, Jesus answered, you’re right, in saying I’m a king. In fact, for this reason I was born. And for this, I came into the world to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth, listens to me. If you don’t listen to Jesus, what did he say the problem is, you’re not on the side of truth. Guys, there’s a line over here is truth. Over here’s, error. Which side are you on? He says, if you’re not listening to me, you’re on the side of error. You’re listening to the father of lies. If you’re not listening to Jesus.

Sounds narrow minded. People said all that you’re a founder, you’re just worshiping. I’m not worshiping a founder. Jesus didn’t come to found a religion. He came for a relationship for who? All mankind, all mankind, and everyone has the right, the entire Muslim world has a Bible that they can read. The entire Jewish world has a Bible, they can read the Buddhists have Bibles, they can read, they’ve chosen to write their own. That’s a choice. I’ve chosen to read this book, instead of the Bible. I’ve chosen to become a follower of Calvin, instead of the Bible. I’ve chosen to follow the Seventh Day Adventist, instead of the Bible, I’ve chosen to follow the Pope, instead of the Bible. And people live in that way where it don’t tell me anything about this Bible. My denomination has told me what to believe. And that’s what I’m believing. I don’t care whether it’s right or wrong, I don’t want I don’t want to mess up my mind by thinking. I just want you to tell me what to believe. Because this is my denomination. This is mom and dad’s denomination and their did and that’s, that’s who I’m for. I’m a Presbyterian. What do they believe? Don’t know, don’t care. Just that’s where I parked my body on Sunday. And that’s how shallow we are. It’s total stupidity and shallow. But that is where the majority of people live with that kind of a mindset. Don’t care what this book says. I’m assuming the guy is teaching me is teaching out of here. That’s a bad assumption. And that’s why guys, you and I had been given the greatest privilege on the face of the earth. And that is to have one of these things in our hands. Many of us I got eight or 10 of them. And I got a book. And this book is truth. This book was written by the Spirit of God through man. And this book contains truth about God. It tells us about the way to God. It tells us about the truth about God. And it tells us about the only life that is available to us from God. Seems to me it’s what Jesus was saying.
