~ “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.
You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.” Romans 8:1-11
Paul kicks things off with a massive declaration of total freedom, setting the record straight right out of the gate: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” He wants us to understand that the heavy weight of guilt is off the table.
He explains why this shift happened: human effort under strict rules was always a losing battle. As Paul puts it, “For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin.” In short, where human weakness failed, God stepped in directly to settle the account.
Two Mindsets, Two Destinations
Paul then draws a sharp line between two completely different ways of existing—living by the “flesh” (our self-centered, earthly nature) versus living by the Spirit:
- The Trap of the Flesh: He doesn’t hold back on where an earthly mindset leads. “The mind of the flesh is death,” he warns, explaining that it’s inherently “hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.” When we try to run the show on our own power, Paul plainly states that “those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.”
- The Reality of the Spirit: On the flip side, Paul points to a completely different outcome: “the mind of the Spirit is life and peace.” —
An Internal Transformation
Then Paul shifts his tone directly to the believer with a powerful word of assurance: “You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.” For Paul, carrying the Spirit isn’t just an optional upgrade or an abstract idea—it’s the fundamental core of a believer’s identity. He reminds us that even though our physical bodies experience the natural effects of mortality, our dynamic spiritual reality has changed: “if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.”
He closes this thought with an incredible promise of resurrection hope: “And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.”
The Bottom Line
Paul’s point is remarkably straightforward: true spiritual life and right standing with God can never be manufactured through willpower or strict legalistic striving. Real freedom happens from the inside out, driven by the very same power that conquered the grave.
And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, having done what, will I inherit eternal life?”

All you have to do-we understand that with children. All you have to do to get a kid to do something is tell him don’t do it. Isn’t that right? That’s all it takes. Just tell him don’t do it, and you’ll see him heading toward it. These passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore the fruit of death. But now, by dying to what once bound us, and what do we die to? The law that was what bound us. We have been released from the law, so that we serve in a new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. Man, if anyone be in Christ, he is what? He’s a new creation. Why are you a new creation? Because you’re not under the law anymore. You’re under grace. That’s why you’re a new creation. We love to say, “Well, I used to do this, but now I don’t. Praise Jesus. That isn’t what’s talking about. It’s talking about the fact that you were dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, and God has now made you alive with Christ. He forgave all of your sins. You’re born forgiven. Do you understand that, guys? It isn’t the case of I get forgiven. If you’re in Christ, you are forgiven. As a matter of fact, you’re forgiven if you’re not in Christ. You just haven’t received it yet. That forgiveness that was provided for you at the cross 2000 years ago. How many of the sins of the world did He die for? He said, “I not only died for your sins, but the sins of who? The whole world was forgiven. Now, if the whole world is forgiven, how much more forgiveness is there to be executed on your behalf by God? We right or wrong? If there, if it’s done, and what did He cry out from the cross? It’s almost finished. Is that what He said? What’d He say? It’s finished. There is no more forgiveness to be executed on your behalf by God. It’s finished. Now, where is that forgiveness that was provided for you then received? Where is that received? In His resurrected life. In Him you have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Are you in Him, or are you still seeking? I’m not saying are you a Baptist or a Presbyterian or people to peopleer. Are you in Him? Have you come to a point in your life where you said, “I’ve had it. I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired. I’ve had it. I can’t do it. I need you, Jesus. I can’t do it. He says, “How much of me do you need? About 95 percent. I’m I’m by 5% okay. He said, “I’m sorry, you’re not ready for me yet. It’s when you and I get to the end of ourselves when people come to say, “I’m at the end of my rope. I say, “Grease that sucker, because that’s where you’re going to find Jesus. Let go and let God. So he says here that dying to what bound us. We have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.
So now the next question comes up: What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Are you telling me then that the law is sin? The law is the problem? No, he said. But I’m going to tell you what the law is for. I wouldn’t even known what coveting was. I wouldn’t even known what sin was except through the law. And he used coveting. It’s interesting that in the Catholic Church a number of years ago that they did a survey among all the Catholic churches in America, and the survey was which sin is the most confessed in the confessionals? Do you know in all of the United States the coveting was never used one time, never mentioned as my sin. Paul used it. Why? Well, because coveting’s under the skin, so I don’t need to confess that. Nobody knows what’s going on under the skin. I’ll just confess the outward stuff. Never used. Paul uses it, and he says, “I wouldn’t have known what coveting was had the commandment not said, ‘Don’t covet. But sin seizing the opportunity that was afforded by this commandment, it stirred up every kind of covenant, desire in part of me, and he said, “I died. I found out I was dead. Apart from the law, sin is dead.
So he says, then down in verse 13, “Did that which is good, the law, become death for me? He said, “No, no. In order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death in you. It didn’t become death for you; produced it. It showed you that you’re dead. That’s the purpose of the law, not to try to live up to it because you can’t, but to show you you can’t. Why do we have our confessions and our First John one nine emphasis that we have in evangelical circles? Because we’re trying to obey the law, and we can’t. But I can confess my sins and get forgiven. I can go to my confession book and get forgiven. If I was still a HEBREW, I can go back to my Day of Atonement and get forgiven. I’m under the law, but I know I have trouble keeping it. But you know, every now and again I slip just a wee bit. But I can go confess it and get forgiven. That’s why the emphasis is on confession for forgiveness. Is because you still think you’re under the law? If you were not under the law, why would you need to do that? Would there be any need for doing this if you weren’t under the law? The Christian world is under the law. That’s why we have all of these traditional things to do when you’re under the law. When you’re under the grace of God and realize that the reason I’m under the grace of God is because Jesus is grace and Jesus took away my sins, what does your mind tell you to do if something’s already been accomplished for you? To say thank you, not keep short accounts, not to think. Oh, there’s a black mark up there that I got to get erased, but to say thank you, Lord, I blew it.
Now, I ask you a question: Is it unusual to blow it under the law? No. I’m going to read to you guys, we’re going to start now in verse 14, and it’s very interesting because what you’ll see here, I ask people to circle if they they mark their Bibles. And number, first of all, hope you have one, and secondly, I hope you realize there’s a difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant, the old testament and the new testament. We’re in the new testament. We’re in the New Covenant that went into effect at the death of Christ, and this book is not one to just sit and stare at. It’s one to use. It’s a work book. It’s got work in it. So circle these things, eyes and the me’s. The first time I read these passages, I thought somebody had been peeking on me, because this is your life, guys. When I came to Christ, I wanted to serve Jesus with all my heart. Man, I was out working at it. Have you ever worked at it, trying to keep yourself holy? Have you ever? I mean, just really giving it a college try to keep myself pleasing to God. How many of you have tried to be pleasing to God? Do you know what God says pleasing to me? Faith. You know what faith says? Faith says what God says. I am wretched, folks. If I don’t see myself as wretched, what in the world would I need with Him? I’m not 90% okay, or 80% okay, or 20% okay. Without Jesus, he said, “I’m nothing. What are you? How do you look at yourself. Lord, just give me enough time. I’ll keep. I’ll just let me work at it. I’ll. I’ll get there sooner or later. Well, here’s what Paul says, and you know Paul wasn’t too bad of a Christian. Here’s what Paul says, and he’s saying this. If people say, “Well, is this him talking about being lost or saved? It doesn’t make any difference. It’s someone under the law. Whether you’re lost under the law or saved under the law, this is your lifestyle under the law. That’s why Christians look like they’ve just eaten a skunk on Sunday morning. Most of them miserable, straight laced, sober, and sad people.
I know that the law is spiritual, Paul says, but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. How many can relate to this one? I don’t understand what I do. How many of you now? Honestly, how many of you relate to that passage? I do not understand not what I do, but what you do? I know you don’t understand what I do. I I don’t understand what I do. So there’s an honest statement. For what I hate, I do. How many of you find yourself the things I really don’t want to do, the things I really hate? I keep on doing it. How many of you hate being critical? How many of you are critical? How many of you are lying right now? Now let’s do that over again. Either you’re paralyzed or something’s wrong. How many of you are critical? That’s that’s better. I think. And how many of you hate being critical? Yeah. Okay. Now we’re now we’re all together, but we are critical. Now, he so he says, I don’t. I hate that, and I do what I do not want to do. The if I do what I don’t want to do, I agree the law is good. There’s nothing wrong with the law. It’s holy and good. But when it flows through me, what’s it do? Kills me. I agree the law is good, but as it is, it’s no longer I myself who do it, but it’s sin living in me. So it’s kind of like sin. Don’t blame me; it’s sin in me. But that’s what he’s saying. Sin lives in you, and you know what sin is doing? Deceiving you, lying to you every day of your life, sin that lives in you is lying to you, telling you to do something different than what God says to do. Every day of your life, it’s there. I know that nothing good lives in me. Me, that is in my sinful nature, for I have the desire to do what is good. But I can’t carry it out. How many have found that to be true? I know what I should be doing, but I can’t carry it out. How many have found that to be true? That’s part of lifestyle, under the law. For what I do is not the good that I want to do. The evil that I don’t want to do this I keep on doing. Talk about frustrating. Now, if I do what I do not want to do, it’s no longer I who do it, but it’s sin living in me that does it. In other words, sin is working in you and me to continually get you to do the things that even you don’t want to do. Are we together? So I find this law to work. When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. Folks, we have the life of Christ living in you. If you’re in Christ, and I put the if in there because I’m not talking about going to church and being religious. I’m talking about a time in your life when you totally gave yourself over to Christ Jesus, when you totally gave up on yourself and came to Christ Jesus. Lord Jesus, I can’t. I don’t even want to try anymore. I give up. I’m ready to surrender to your forgiveness, and I’m ready to surrender to your life, because I can’t live the life that I want, even I want to live, let alone the one you want me to live. And I’m through, and I give up. It’s like the old World War One movies where the flag goes up, and they’re saying, “I don’t care what you do with me. You can kill me, put me in prison, set me free, but I give up. I’m in your hands, and folks, that’s what we do when we come to Christ. We put the flag up and say, “Lord, I’m in Your hands. I don’t care what You do with me. The beauty of that is we know what He does with us. He makes us into a new creation.

Now he says, “I see this law at work. When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.” And folks, we have to realize: is that true in your life? Is evil always there with us? Always there, tempting? Always there, pulling in the wrong direction? It’s always there, guys. It’ll never be away until the day we’re absent from the body and present with the Lord. You say, “Why did God do that? Why didn’t He just take that away?” Because if we didn’t have this conflict that we’re talking about here, we’d forget Jesus in a New York minute, folks. Do you realize that? That’s why He said to rejoice in your weakness. Is because if I didn’t have weakness, I wouldn’t trust the Lord. Keeps you trusting. He knew what he was doing when he said, “I’m going to come live in you, but also sin’s going to continue living in you.
So, in my inner being, I delight in God’s law, but I see another work, another law at work in the members of my body, members of my. Body, waging war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members, within my body. Paul comes to a conclusion, folks. What a wretched man that I am. You know, Paul said, as far as legalistic obedience is concerned, in another place, he said, “I was without equal,” but he says, “I’m wretched.” He said, “For all the things that I strive for, I consider them as a dung compared to that of knowing Christ.” It’s all worthless. The only thing that counts is faith in Jesus. For as a wretched man that I am, who will rescue me from his body of death? He’s crying out to be rescued from this condition of being under the law. What is his answer? Try a little harder. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps, tithe more, go to church more, give more, do do do do do. So we’ve become a bunch of do do Christians. Is that what he says? I mean, guys, is this you’re in? Is this the lifestyle right here. This is us, and now he says, “Identify yourself. He did, wretched man that I am. Who will rescue from me from this body of death? And then he says, “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ, my Lord. He didn’t say to go to a formula. He didn’t say to get down and live by principles. He didn’t say to get your get all your denominational things together and be sure that you obey them. He said, “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ, my Lord. He has set me free.
And then he goes ahead in chapter eight to say, “Therefore, what’s the therefore? Therefore, because of what he just said, there is now no condemnation awaiting you who are in Christ Jesus. Why? Because the law of the Spirit of life has set me free from the law of sin and death. When you stepped out of Adam into Christ, and Christ stepped out of heaven into you. You became a new creation. Old things have passed away, and behold, all things have become new. And a part of that being a new creation is I have now been freed from the law of sin and death. And as a new child of God, there is now no condemnation awaiting me. Who belongs to Christ Jesus. Do we realize, my friends, that when Jesus took away the sins of the world, that there will be no man who will ever go to hell because of his sins? Contrary to many times we hear from our pulpits, that you keep into that sin, God’s going to get you. No, God has already gotten Jesus for that sin. He said that the world’s sin, singular, is unbelief in me. The only question that God will ever ask you and me is, “What did you do with my Son, the Son that I loved and sent and sacrificed, so you could go free. What’d you do with him? Ignore him? Turn your back on him? Say who needs him? Say I’ll work it out myself? Or did you finally come to see your wretchedness? And what do you say, wretchedness, what it means is I have no hope. When I’m wretched, means I can’t do it.
It doesn’t mean that you’re some kind of a real bad person. It just means wretchedness means as hard as I try, things I want to do I don’t do, the things I don’t want to do I do them anyway. I’m wretched. I cannot pull it off. He says, now you got it. Now you’re ready for salvation, because when you recognize that you can’t, that’s when you’re going to turn to Me, who did, and now you’re ready for salvation. The law, what the law was powerless to do, because it was weakened by me. Nothing wrong with the law, but it’s weakened by my flesh. God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. He condemns sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met now in us who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Not only did Jesus fulfill the law, but the very moment that we became identified with Jesus, the law has now been fulfilled in us. What is applicable to Him is now applicable to you. There is no more law for you to fulfill, so He says, “Die to it. If you don’t die to the law, you can’t die to yourself. And the Bible says to die to self, but you can’t die to self as long as you’re under the law because the law demands the place to behave, and when the law demands the place to behave, what’s your lifestyle? The things I want to do, I don’t do, and the things I want to do anyway-that’s your lifestyle. If you’re under the law, God says, “I want you to be led by my Spirit. You are now indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God, the third person of the Trinity comes to live in you as a born-again believer, and he says, “I came to live in you in first of all in order to convince the world wrong about sin, righteousness, and judgment. About sin because they do not believe in me-that’s the world’s sin. About righteousness, because you’ve seen righteousness in me, Jesus, and now I’m going to go to the Father, where you will see no more. And about judgment, because the prince of this world has already been judged. The Holy Spirit said, “I’m going to come to lead you and to guide you into all truth. So you don’t need any longer to lean upon your own understanding, but you can now acknowledge Him in all your ways and let Him direct your paths.
And my friends, when we let Jesus direct our paths, we save ourselves from tons of trouble. Think about in your life the trouble that you’ve been in, the hardships that you’ve gone through, is because of making dumb decisions, isn’t it? Dumb decisions, decisions that sounded right to you. In fact, that voice of Satan was talking to you and sounded just like it was you talking, using your voice and your accent and everything, just like it was you. Of course, if you think it must be right, Satan is there to fool us. And so, the only way that we’re going to live a life free from being deceived and fooled by Satan is to be led internally by the Spirit of God, who will lead you into truth. He he will he’ll he’ll he’ll put red flags when you don’t even understand why there’s red flags, but there’s red flags, and he’ll lead you into all truth if you let Him. But we’re not used to that. We’re used to being told what to do by the pastor. And you see, I don’t have a clue what God wants to do with you. I’m still figuring out what He wants to do with me. I don’t know what He wants to do with you. Don’t come to me to ask me that. That’s between you and God. But see, if I want to control you, why then I’m not going to teach you this message because you can’t control people who are free in grace. You can only control people when you keep them under the law and then beat them up every Sunday for disobeying the law. So come forward and get your sins forgiven again. And so that’s a great routine you go into. Well that’s not true.
And so, guys, what I want, my desire in my life is to allow the Holy Spirit of God who lives in me to control my life and to guide me into all truth. My desire for you is the same thing: is that God will individually deal with you in those areas of your life where the things that you want to do you don’t do, and to realize the reason that’s the case, you’re still under the law and die to it. Said the law ain’t gonna die to you. You gotta die to it. Die to it for what? So that I can come alive in Jesus. So that so that my life now is trusting Jesus 100 percent, not the law, not obedience, not all this other, but trusting Jesus. See, we put all these rules. You got to do this. You got to do that, folks. When if I got to do it, it’s the law. The minute I say you got to be here, you got to be here, you got to be here next Sunday, because attendance a little down this week, and makes me feel bad. So you got it. That’s law. You just, I just put you under the law. Says don’t let anyone ever put you back under the yoke of slavery. Don’t ever let someone do that to you ever again. You’re free, and you’re free not to go live it up, but you’re free now to serve one another in love. You’re not serving someone in love when you’re sinning with them, are you? And so you are free, but he says freedom has responsibility, and that responsibility is serve one another, serve one another, do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Isn’t a great law? If it was a law, do unto others the same way. Treat others the same way you’d like others to treat you. Do you want others to be critical of you all the time? Well, then quit being critical of them. If you don’t want to be a critical of you, quit being critical of them. But boy, we’d be critical. Ought to join AA. Hi, I’m Bob. I got a critical spirit. Boy, we can sure be critical.
Amy and I are the restaurant this morning. I violated what I’m talking about three times, just looking at the waitresses. I mean, really, we can be just unbelievably critical. Somebody’s a little ugly. It’s like they meant to be that way. You know, they were born. They said, “Oh, please make me ugly, Lord. I am glad of grace because if if I wasn’t under grace, I’d be dead, and so would you. You know, we’re not just talking about the big things; it’s the little things that bother me, the attitudes that we have is sometimes say, Lord, I don’t know why you put up with me, but thank you for doing it. I don’t think there’s a morning that I don’t wake up to say, Lord, just thank you for your mercy. Thank you for your mercy.
Well, guys, that’s the Roman seven experience that, quite frankly, I believe that every person who comes to Christ is going to have to go through, or I don’t think you’re going to come to Christ. I think you’re going to have to say the things I want to do. I don’t. The things I don’t want to do, I’m doing them anyway. I’m wretched. Can’t can’t pull this off through my religion. I’m wretched. And Lord, you said you came to do it, and I’m going to let you do it. Faithful is He who called you, who also what? Do it. Who called you? Jesus. Who wants to do it? Jesus. Do what? Do it all. It’s all Him, and none of us. Folks we grab a hold of that. We can take a vacation in Jesus. That’s why I call it vacation in Jesus. Sit back and relax. That’s what’s called the Promised Land. If you want to have church for the rest of your life in the desert, go have it. But ain’t gonna be here. If you want to rest, if you want to go into the Promised Land and rest from your works, just as He did from His, and to learn what it is to listen to the voice of God and be led by it, this is probably a good place to be for a while, and that’s what we’re here for: is to help you and me to learn every day how to more walk in dependency upon our Lord Jesus Christ.
