The Resurrected Life of Jesus is What Saves a Person, Not His Death on the Cross

~ You know, it’s surprising how many people miss the full picture of what the gospel really is. A lot of folks grow up believing that Jesus’ death on the cross was the complete finish line of salvation. But while the cross was essential, it was actually clearing the way for something even greater: His resurrected life. The cross reconciled us to God, but it is His life that actually saves us. As the Apostle Paul explains in Romans 5:10, “For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!”

It’s so easy to get stuck at the cross or view the resurrection as just an amazing historical event, without realizing what it means for us right now. People often forget that it was the Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead—and that very same Spirit was sent at Pentecost so we could be spiritually raised from the dead, too. Scripture highlights this incredible connection in Romans 8:11: “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.” When we put our faith in Him, His indwelling Spirit takes us from spiritual death into dynamic, living relationship.

Think about when John the Baptist pointed to Jesus before the cross and declared in John 1:29, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” On this side of the cross, that statement stands as a completed reality—He already took away the sin of the world. Because He dealt with the sin problem for every single one of us before we even knew Him, that barrier is gone. That cleared the way for His Spirit to enter our hearts and impart real life. Ultimately, as 2 Corinthians 5:21 tells us, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Salvation isn’t just about having a clean slate; it’s about His resurrection life dwelling inside us today. Reminder, Jesus is God in the flesh. He became the perfect Man, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

Bob George addresses callers’ questions on faith and Christian living. Laurie from Vancouver discusses her return to faith after overcoming drug and alcohol addiction, emphasizing the importance of living a life consistent with being a child of God. Bob advises her to seek answers in the Bible and reassures her that sin is already forgiven through Christ. Mary from Lubbock seeks clarification on reincarnation and the afterlife, with Bob explaining the concept of a glorified body and the eternal presence of believers with God. Heath from Bakersfield inquires about the rapture, and Bob explains that the rapture is a sign, not a salvation event, and that people will always have the opportunity to believe in Christ. Jeff from Orange County discusses his struggles with anger, and Bob advises him to address the root cause of fear to overcome his anger.

Alan (Atlanta, Georgia – WGUN)

Alan calls in primarily to thank God and express appreciation for Bob’s “real answers,” especially regarding speaking in tongues. His question centers on Deuteronomy 22:5, after a pastor told him it was an “abomination” for women to wear pants. Alan is troubled by what he sees as selective use and misapplication of Old Testament law, and he points out that women’s pants are made for women, so the pastor’s argument doesn’t make sense to him.

Bob responds that the pastor’s interpretation is both historically and theologically misguided. In the culture of Deuteronomy, men wore robe-like garments and women wore robe-like garments as well, so modern “pants” categories don’t map cleanly onto that command. More importantly, Bob stresses that the pastor is rooted in the Old Covenant (Deuteronomy) instead of living in the New Covenant in Christ, accusing him of picking and choosing laws while ignoring context and the completed work of Christ.

Vernon (Southgate, Michigan – WRDT)

Vernon calls to ask about 1 Corinthians 13:8–10, especially around “love never fails” and what it means that prophecies, tongues, and knowledge will cease. He isn’t confused about the definition of love itself, but about how those verses fit together and what they imply about spiritual gifts and their continuation.

Bob explains that prophecy and additional special revelations are no longer needed, because everything God wants us to know prophetically is contained in Scripture now that the canon is complete. Similarly, he says biblical tongues were real languages given supernaturally for communication where the speaker had not learned the language, and he believes that kind of tongues has effectively ceased. He emphasizes that believers are to “grow up” spiritually, focusing on faith, hope, and especially love, using spiritual gifts to edify others, not to remain fixated on showy or childish manifestations.

Chad (Alexandria, Virginia – WFAX)

Chad calls with a practical discipleship question: how do AA teachings about restitution (Step 8) fit with Christ’s teaching on forgiveness and the Christian life? He’s trying to reconcile the program’s emphasis on going back and making amends with what he knows about grace and the gospel.

Bob replies that AA is not a church or a biblical authority, and over time has been watered down into a “higher power” of anything-from God to an apple tree or a refrigerator. He argues that the core issue is identity: if someone continues to see themselves as “an alcoholic,” they will keep living out that label; in Christ, the believer’s true identity is “a child of God,” not an alcoholic. On restitution, Bob says specific, Spirit-led restitution can be appropriate (e.g., repaying what was stolen, apologizing to someone you wronged), but he rejects a legalistic, blanket requirement to chase down everyone you’ve ever hurt as a rule of law, insisting believers should follow the Lord’s leading rather than man-made lists.

Marilyn (Atlanta, Georgia – WGUN)

Marilyn calls with a doctrinal Bible-study question: when did the animal sacrifice system end, and where can she study that topic? She notes that the Gospels don’t talk much about sacrifices during Jesus’ ministry and wonders if the sacrificial system might have ended before Christ’s birth.

Bob answers by distinguishing God’s perspective from historical practice. From God’s perspective, the animal sacrifices ended at the death of Christ, because His sacrifice was once for all, as explained especially in Hebrews (e.g., no more sacrifice for sins, sins and lawless acts remembered no more). Historically, animal sacrifices in HEBREWISM continued until 70 A.D., when the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed and the system physically stopped. He clarifies that Jesus lived and taught under the Old Covenant, with sacrifices still in place, and His teaching ministry was aimed at revealing people’s sinfulness and need so they would be prepared to embrace the New Covenant inaugurated by His death.

Niles (Detroit, Michigan – WRDT)

Niles calls to explore what “new life in Christ” really means. He asks whether it’s a new lifestyle, a journey, or something else, and he’s wrestling with the reality that even as a believer he still feels wrong emotions and struggles in daily living.

Bob explains that those in Christ are “new creations” (2 Corinthians 5:17): not just improved versions of their old selves, but new spiritual beings indwelt permanently by Christ. This means they are on a new journey because they have a new nature and identity, yet they still have a will and can choose to walk in the flesh or in the Spirit. Bob warns that emotions are deceptive—like the caboose on a train, not the engine—and believers must be led by faith, not feelings. Christ does not automatically have “total control”; believers participate in His life by faith, choosing to depend on Him moment by moment. The Christian life is a continual process of being drawn back to trust in Christ, who never leaves or forsakes His own.

Michael (Detroit, Michigan – WRDT)

Michael calls with a more theological question on terminology: what is the distinction between atonement and redemption, and did Jesus’ death function as “atonement” in the same way Old Testament sacrifices did? He notes how commonly “atonement” is used in church language and wants clarity.

Bob strongly distinguishes the two. Atonement, he says, is an Old Testament concept referring to the covering of sins by the blood of bulls and goats; that blood never actually took away sins. Redemption, however, is a New Covenant reality: Christ bought us back from our lost condition, like trading in worthless “green stamps” for something valuable. Jesus did not come merely to atone (cover) sins; He came to take them away completely, a work that culminates in His death and especially His resurrected life. Bob points to propitiation—God’s complete satisfaction with Christ’s sacrifice—as the biblical term for what Jesus accomplished, and he critiques certain communion practices and language that focus on re-presenting or re-sacrificing Christ. For Bob, the Lord’s Supper is a picture of Christ’s indwelling life and the New Covenant, in which sins are fully forgiven and there is no longer any sacrifice for sins.
