Born of God: The Free Gift of New Life in Christ

~ “But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God.” John 1:12–13

The offer of sonship is unconditionally and freely extended to anyone who will receive Jesus. It is not earned through human lineage, self-effort, or moral striving, but received purely by placing trust in Jesus Christ—God manifest in the flesh (Colossians 2:9). As Scripture declares:

“Whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.” — Revelation 22:17 > “For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'” — Romans 10:13

The Finished Work of the Cross

This gift rests entirely on the completed, past-tense sacrifice of Christ. At the Cross, Jesus took away the sins of the entire world once and for all (John 1:29), ensuring that sin is no longer counted against humanity today:

“God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them.” — 2 Corinthians 5:19 > “He has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself.” — Hebrews 9:26

Instant Rebirth Through Individual Faith

While Christ’s redemption was accomplished for the whole world at Calvary, it becomes active in an individual’s life through faith. The exact moment a person understands the Truth and places their faith in Him, God bestows His Holy Spirit, imparting eternal life instantly:

“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.” — Ephesians 1:13

A New Creation in Christ

Because our God is indeed the Living God—resurrected and triumphant—the believer is immediately adopted into His divine family. By placing total faith in Christ’s finished work, the individual is instantly transformed into a genuine child of God and a brand-new creation:

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” — 1 John 3:1 > “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17

Bible Study Books

Bob George addressed callers’ questions on financial transparency in churches, emphasizing the need for audits and ethical practices. He criticized the misuse of funds and stressed the importance of fiscal responsibility. In a discussion about the book of Jude, Bob explained that it refutes Gnostic heresies, highlighting the importance of understanding early Christian teachings. He also clarified that true Christians would not vacillate between faiths, urging individuals to commit fully to Christ. Additionally, Bob guided a caller through a prayer to accept Christ, emphasizing the importance of spiritual life and growth through faith.

In this segment, the key caller Bob leads to Christ is Claudia from Butler, Pennsylvania. She comes on the line very simply and directly, saying she wants to get saved. That immediately shows she’s not after a theological debate; she has a personal, pressing spiritual need. Bob affirms that this is a good desire and assumes she’s heard enough of the broadcast to know something about salvation, but as she speaks, her confusion becomes clear. She admits she doesn’t really know what it means to be “born again,” though she has heard and used phrases like “give your heart to Christ.” Bob doesn’t argue with her wording; instead, he gently backs up and explains what salvation actually is.

He starts by laying a foundation: God says two key things—what He says about us and what He says about Himself. About us, Bob explains that we are all born into this world as sinners, and the wages of sin is death. He stresses that this is spiritual death, not just physical, and that we are not born with spiritual life; we come into the world spiritually dead. That is the core problem salvation must address. Then he explains what God has done about this in Christ. Salvation, he says, is God giving us spiritual, eternal life—Jesus’ own life. In order to give us a life that can never be lost, Jesus had to deal with the cause of spiritual death, which is sin. At the cross, Jesus took away the sins of the entire world from God’s sight, never to see them again. Because of that, no one is condemned for their individual sins as such, but rather for the single issue of rejecting the Son of God, who came to give us life. The focus, then, is not on self-improvement or religious effort, but on receiving the life of Christ Himself.

To make this concrete, Bob uses a practical illustration. He compares life without Christ to trying to make a car function without gasoline. You can push it, polish it, show it off to the neighbors, but it will never actually go anywhere. In the same way, a human being can try very hard, but without Christ’s life inside, they can’t function the way God designed. Just as gas is indispensable to the operation of a car, God in the person is indispensable to the function of the person. That helps Claudia see her need is not more effort or more religion, but the very life of Christ in her.

In the middle of this, Claudia reveals that things are heavy and frightening for her personally. She says people are even seeking her life, indicating she feels under real threat in the physical realm. Bob acknowledges that people can indeed destroy the body, but then draws a sharp contrast: once she has spiritual life, no one can ever destroy that. That drives home how important and secure eternal life in Christ really is.

Bob then turns from explanation to invitation and asks Claudia if she is ready to let Jesus take His rightful place in her heart as Lord and Savior. She says she is. He leads her in a simple, clear prayer—not as a magic formula, but as an expression of the attitude of her heart. She tells the Lord Jesus that she needs Him, thanks Him for dying on the cross for her sins and taking them away, acknowledges that He is now offering her His resurrected life, and receives Him into her heart as her Lord, her Savior, and even her very best friend. She repeats each line sincerely, showing she is personally owning these truths before God.

After the prayer, Bob doesn’t leave her in vague hopefulness; he gives concrete assurance from Scripture. He points her to the promise that as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God. Then he asks her, based on that, what Jesus has just made her. Claudia answers that He has made her a child of God. Bob confirms that this is exactly right and includes himself with her as a fellow child of God, making them brother and sister in Christ. He reminds her that all the angels in heaven rejoice over one person who repents and comes to Christ, underscoring how significant her decision is in heaven’s eyes, not just on that phone line.

From there, Bob gently shifts to what comes after this new birth. He compares her salvation to a baby being born: the birth is real and complete, but now comes growth. Spiritual growth, he says, comes from being fed with the Word of God and good teaching. Claudia already has a Bible, so he encourages her to read it and to keep listening. He offers to send her a follow-up course that will help her go into the Bible, look up key passages, answer questions from Scripture, and really solidify what has taken place in her life. He also tells her she can call anytime, affirming that they’re there to help her along the way. She responds with gratitude, and Bob ends that part of the program by joyfully acknowledging that they now have a new sister in Christ, marking her call as a clear moment of conversion and new spiritual life.
