Repentance is a Change of Mind

~ “The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!” Mark 1:15

– It is interesting to note, when you start paying attention to the details, that pastors can talk about Jesus having forgiven the sins of the world, and have many sermons on the matter, and then at the end of their sermons will negate everything they said, and spread satan’s lie of getting more forgiveness by God when a person sins, as though they lose their salvation, or go in and out of fellowship with God. The 1 John 1:9 passage of scripture is what people camp on, and never look at the meaning of words. They believe the lie of confession is asking forgiveness to God, instead of agreeing with God that ALL your sins were taken away at the cross. They make the Greek word translated as “IF” as a conditional “If” in order to make something happen, instead of understanding it is a “whether or not” type of “If” statement in the Greek. And then they preach the lie on top of that, that God will forgive you “If” you ask for it, instead of understanding that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” And the verbs are a past action aorist Greek verb tense, to “have forgiven” and to “have cleansed of all unrighteousness.” Now when a person comes to the knowledge of Truth, TRUTH then indwells them through the Holy Spirit for eternal Life the very moment a person places Faith in that TRUTH. God is TRUTH. Jesus is TRUTH. The Father is TRUTH. The Holy Spirit is TRUTH. His righteousness and TRUTH will then indwell a person. Otherwise no one could be saved completely if Jesus had not taken care of the sin issue completely. Because for that to be true, when a person does sinning again (and we all do), the Holy Spirit would depart from them. This is an impossibility after the cross. Because Jesus declared it is FINISHED. No more sacrifices for sin. No more shedding of blood for the forgiveness of sins. No more asking God to do what He has already done.

Reminder, the word translated as “confess” simply means to agree with God. The word in Greek means according to Strong’s G3670 – homologeō – ὁμολογέω is to say the same thing as another, i.e. to agree with, assent. Let’s be crystal clear; confess does not mean to ask for forgiveness. So if someone is agreeing with God, they have to agree with God, that God was in Christ Jesus reconciling the world to himself and is no longer counting anyone’s sins against them. Bottom line is that no one “gets” their sins forgiven today. They receive (accept) what has already been given to them. They agree with God!

“Well, Ron, repentance is absolutely necessary for salvation, and then it’s profitable after salvation, but not necessary. You have to realize it says in the scripture that all things are permissible, but not all things are profitable. So our decision making process after we’re in Christ, is, is this profitable? Is it profitable for you, as a child of the living God, to go out and to have an affair with somebody? No, it is not profitable. You ruin your marriage. You ruin people and everything else. So that’s the decision making process. The word repentance as it’s used in the New Testament, is a totality of a change of mind, and is never used in the New Testament except in regard to salvation. The word repentance is never used after salvation, only. In regard to salvation, there’s a reason for that. It’s a very, very stringent term. Now we use repentance like I used to smoke, but now I don’t. I’ve repented. Well, not necessarily because you could start again. I used to drink, but now I don’t. Well, that’s nice, but you could start again, so, but when you’re dealing with repenting in regard to being an unbeliever. All of us are born into this world as unbelievers. There’s no baby that comes out of the womb saying, Praise Jesus. We’re born as unbelievers. And so you have to change your mind in regard to your unbelief, to belief in the provision of God that he made through Christ, Jesus. What you’re dealing there with is this, you, a person comes into this world, and they have to be taught as to how God provided for Man in His Son, Jesus, Christ. We have to be taught that we are sinners. We have to be taught that we are dead spiritually. We’re born into this world, not alive spiritually, but dead spiritually. And that’s why Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life, and he who believes in me has life, and he who does not believe in me does not have life. So we have to be taught those things out of Scripture, and because no one is going to necessarily know that you may be an awareness of your alienation from God, but you don’t understand the death, the spiritual death, that we have and the offer of life, unless we’re taught. And of course, that message has been taught for 2000 years as to God’s provision for us, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not counting their sins against us. Now that’s good news, and that He who has the Son has life, and he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. And these things I have written unto You who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know something, and that is that you have eternal life, so that repentance, in regard to salvation, is a total change of mind, where all of a sudden, it’s kind of the lights go on and you see your condition, and you see his provision, and you apply it to your life. You can have a knowledge of that. I did not really come to Christ till I was 36 years of age. Now I knew about. Jesus like I knew about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. I knew him as a historical figure. If someone would ask me, Do you believe he’s the son of God? Absolutely. What does that mean? I don’t have a clue. I knew he died on a cross, but I didn’t know he died for me. I knew that he was raised, or at least believed that he was raised from the dead, but I didn’t have a clue what that meant. So knowing what something says and knowing what something means are two different things. But when that reality of Christ revealing Himself to us, when that hit and I understood my lost condition and came to him for salvation, my life was totally, totally changed, and there’s no explanation for that except coming to Christ by faith, and that’s total repentance. I laughingly say that repentance is kind of like your breakfast in the morning of bacon and eggs. The chicken makes a contribution. The pig is total commitment, and repentance is pig stuff. Repentance is a total change of mind in regard to Christ, Jesus. Now after that, we have decisions that we make, and after we come to Christ and are in Christ, Jesus, we will certainly be being taught and discipled by the Spirit of God who lives in us. My mind starts thinking worldly, he starts bringing it back to where it needs to be, and I change my mind. But it’s just not called repentance. So as far as repentance, the word repentance as it’s used in the Bible is concerned, it’s only used in regard to salvation, right? But in reality, we’re going to be changing our mind continually. If we’re going to be taught by Christ, we’re obviously going to be changing our mind every day of our lives, right?” ~ Bob George
