Call-In Classic Christianity Radio – Bob George P1150 (07-24-26)
We Are the Church: Believers in Christ, Not a Physical Building
In Scripture, the term “church” (translated from the Greek ekklesia, meaning “called-out assembly”) refers to people—specifically, born-again believers who are spiritually united in Christ Jesus—rather than a physical structure or brick-and-mortar building on a street corner.
Key Scriptures
1. God Does Not Live in Man-Made Temples
Under the New Covenant, God’s dwelling place is no longer a physical building made by human hands.
“God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.” — Acts 17:24
2. Believers Are the Temple of God
When a person is born again of the Holy Spirit, God takes up permanent residence within them. Believers themselves are God’s dwelling place.
“Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” — 1 Corinthians 3:16
“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” — 1 Corinthians 6:19
3. Believers Constitute the Body of Christ
Scripture defines the Church as the living body of believers, with Jesus Christ as the head.
“Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.” — 1 Corinthians 12:27
“And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.” — Colossians 1:18
4. Living Stones Built into a Spiritual House
Rather than physical bricks and mortar, God constructs His spiritual house out of living people.
“You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” — 1 Peter 2:5
“Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God… in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.” — Ephesians 2:19, 22
Summary
The Church is not a location people go to; it is who born-again believers are. A physical building is simply a meeting place, but the true Church of Jesus Christ consists of all believers indwelt by the Holy Spirit across the world.

Bob George addresses callers’ questions on faith and marriage. A caller from Detroit discusses marital issues and doubts about his wife’s faith, leading Bob to emphasize the importance of both partners being born-again believers for marital unity. Another caller from Texas inquires about the necessity of attending church, with Bob clarifying that believers are the church and that true faith is in Jesus, not in church attendance or organizational structures. A third caller from Denver seeks reassurance of salvation, with Bob explaining that true faith results in a change of heart and that believers have eternal life through Jesus, who took away all sins at the cross.
“Christ, for the equipping of the saints, for their work of ministry. What is our work of ministry? When they asked Jesus what was the work of the ministry, he said to believe in Him, and that is the work of the ministry is to believe in Him. There’s only one thing that you can do. If apart from Christ you can do nothing, then there’s only one work that you can do, and that’s abide in Christ who can. You can’t, but He can, and He did, and He does. And so the issue is that you are the church, you are the body of Christ. So how can you go to yourself? You already are the body of Christ. Now, it does say, “Don’t forsake the assembling of ourselves together. But again, does that mean going to a building on the corner of Walk and Don’t Walk, and or does it mean that wherever you meet with other believers, that that’s the church? Didn’t Jesus say, “Where two or more gathered my name, there I am in the midst of you. So, are you saying that if two believers gathered together in a coffee shop, Jesus wouldn’t be there because you weren’t inside of a building that you call the church in the early days, Beth? There were no such thing as church buildings. That came along, unfortunately, when ________ decided to make it a national religion, and Christianity, a national religion. Everybody had to go to church, so they had to big build big buildings for to house them. But prior to that, they all met in homes. Now, how many people came to those homes? I don’t know. Two, 3, 30, 40 we don’t know, but we do know that wherever people are gathering together for the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, and prayer, which is what it says the early church gathered for. Why, that’s a church. That that’s the church meeting. It’s not a church. It’s the church meeting. You are the church. Remember that. And so, as far as a local church, is there anything in the Bible about local church? There, there are local church means that the body of Christ is meeting in a local area, the church of Ephesus. What was it? People in Ephesus who were born again meeting together, and so you know they’re all a part of the universal church, but they live in Ephesus, so what is the Church of Ephesus? Born again believers meeting together in Ephesus. Now, what happened when they began to make the church a requirement? Why then, of course, you have what you have today, and that’s a building filled up with people, the majority of whom don’t know the Lord from an apple tree. And then, on top of that, why we accentuate that by coming out with programs to reach the lost, and they never get saved. So you have to keep building bigger buildings in order to house people that again don’t have don’t know the Lord or don’t have any interest in knowing the Lord. There’s only one way to be saved, Beth, and that’s faith in Jesus. It has nothing to do with the church at all, faith in Jesus alone is what saves you, and so we’ve placed all this emphasis on the local body. And there again, we’ve got our mind on the body instead of the head.” ~ Bob George

John 6:28,29
28 Therefore they said to Him, “What must we do, that we may be doing the works of God?”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you should believe in Him whom He has sent.”
