Call-In Classic Christianity Radio – Bob George P858 (08-04-23)
Are We Supposed to Pray The Lord’s Prayer Today?
~ The Lord’s Prayer was answered by the Father when Jesus prayed it as an example of how to pray. Yet today, people repeat the prayer over and over and over again, the Catholic’s saying it with their rosary beads and in their masses, and the Protestants repeat it also in their services as though they think God is pleased with us when we say the Lord’s prayer again and again. Most people never really give a second thought to what they are doing and what they are saying. They don’t have a clue that Jesus taught under the Old Covenant, and certainly don’t understand that the New Covenant began at His death on the cross. In fact, most stop at the wrong place with the Lord’s prayer in itself and don’t even know what the ending of it really is, nor do they understand the warning of what forgiveness was like under the old covenant. And this is why there is such a misunderstanding of the word of God today. People don’t go on to the NEW, of forgiving one another just as Jesus Christ forgave you. Forgave (past tense) happened at the cross. Rest in His forgiveness. Place faith in it. Don’t just give lip service to it. And quit listening to the teaching of men. Start listening to the Holy Spirit teaching you directly from God.
~ “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:14,15
~ “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:13
~ “Well, thank you, Greg, I appreciate your call. Let me take the first part that you were talking about there with the Lord’s Prayer and said, Oh, God was teaching as a prayer. Nothing could be farther from the truth. God, Jesus wasn’t teaching us a prayer. He was teaching us how to pray. And what we have done is to use the example that he gave as to how to pray and turn it into a prayer. He cautioned us on doing that when he said, Don’t pray like the heathen, do that, take a prayer and pray it over and over and over again. But instead, pray along these lines. So praying along these lines mean here, I’m going to teach you how to pray. And we made a prayer out of it. You never saw Peter repeat that prayer, or Paul or anybody else, never recorded in the scripture of repeating that prayer wasn’t meant to be a prayer. He was teaching them how to pray, and teaching them quite frankly, how to pray under the Old Covenant. I think you had people you know, knowing the humor of Christ Jesus, it’s starting out our Father on in heaven, hallowed be thy name, say check, Lorna, like that. Give us this day, our daily bread. I like that better than everything I’ve heard in a long time. Lord, thanks for that. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors say, Oh, you did. In other words, we have to forgive people in order to be forgiven. And then he goes in to say for if you do not forgive your brother here on Earth, your father never will not forgive you don’t like all of his teaching. Example. If you look at a woman’s lustfully in your heart, you’ve already committed adultery, highly encouraging. And also, that the law, the law says, Don’t murder. But I say if you’re angry at somebody, you’ve already committed a murder. That’s highly encouraging. And we realized that the teaching of Christ Jesus, again, was preparatory just like the cross, everything he taught was preparing us for salvation. Everything he taught was showing us that we cannot do it. He could, but we can’t. And everything he taught was that way. This is, I can’t argue with you, Lord, that this is what righteousness is. But that ain’t me. And that’s what we have to come to before. We’re prepared for the cross and for the resurrection. And so the teachings of Christ Jesus were really an extension of the law, it was getting underneath the skin, the law deals with the surface. And Jesus came and got under the skin with the attitudes of the heart. And in so doing buries us as to our own righteousness to a person that does not ever get that. Why then they think that Jesus teaching was go out and do everything that I said to do. And I’ll give that a whack Lord, the only problem is they can’t do it. And so they say, well, but I try. And I tell people that trying and a buck 50 will get you a cup of coffee but that’s all it’ll get you. So trying is not the issue. It’s trusting. It’s trusting in the Spirit that lives in you to live his life and and through you. It’s like a branch, a branch can not produce fruit, it can only bear the fruit that is produced by the vine. And so Christ teaching is what taught us that and that’s what prepared us for the cross.” ~ Bob George

“But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.” Hebrews 8:6
