True Confession vs. Asking for Forgiveness: Stop Begging for What is Already Yours
Within the institutional church, believers are constantly conditioned to believe that “confessing” means getting on your knees and begging God for another localized installment of grace. They treat 1 John 1:9 like a horizontal “Christian bar of soap” to keep themselves in good graces with God.
But under the strict legal jurisprudence of the New Covenant, this works-based transaction is a complete inversion of the Truth.
It is not that we do not confess—of course we do!. But we must understand what biblical confession actually is.
1. The Linguistic Reality of Homologeō
In our modern English vernacular, “confess” almost always carries a criminal connotation—a suspect in an interrogation room pleading for a plea bargain to escape sentencing. But this is not the word John used.
The Greek word translated as “confess” in the New Testament is homologeō (ὁμολογέω). It is a compound word:
- Homos meaning “same” or “identical”.
- Logos meaning “word,” “to speak,” or “the legal account”.
Forensically, homologeō means Socratic agreement—to speak the exact same thing or to say the same thing as another.
When a believer stumbles in their horizontal walk under the dome, true confession is not a sorrowful petition to “get clean”. It is vertically agreeing with the Judge’s assessment about your behavior and His finalized verdict:
“Father, I agree with You. This action I just took was independent self-will; it was the flesh. But I also agree with Your sovereign verdict that this very stumble was fully paid for, liquidated, and permanently taken away by my Goel at the cross of Calvary. I stand in the vertical authority of His Life inside me.”
2. Why We DO NOT Ask For Forgiveness
The primary deception of the institutional “vending machine” is the idea that our verbal prayers trigger God’s act of forgiving us. This is an act of spiritual amnesia and unbelief.
Scripturally, you never ask for what you already have:
- You HAVE Redemption: “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;” (Ephesians 1:7).
- You ARE Forgiven: “When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,” (Colossians 2:13).
- The Ledger is CLOSED: “To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing [not counting] their trespasses unto them;” (2 Corinthians 5:19).
In God’s courtroom, forgiveness is an objective, finished, historical fact executed at the cross of Calvary entirely independent of your daily performance. Sins are not being logged, counted, or tracked today.
To ask God to forgive you today is to declare that the cross of Calvary was insufficient—spitting in the face of God by treating His finished, infinite buy-back as an incomplete down payment that requires your verbal reminders to activate.
Apply Faith to the Equation!

Bob emphasized that Jesus replaced all prophets, and modern prophecies should align with Scripture, not introduce new information. John, a soldier, thanked Bob for his ministry and packages for soldiers. Bob clarified that salvation is through Christ’s resurrection and His LIFE, not just forgiveness. Mary questioned Mormon beliefs, and Bob debunked their claims, highlighting their false Jesus and reliance on the Book of Mormon. Catherine sought clarification on Jesus’ cry from the cross, which Bob linked to Psalm 22 and the fulfillment of prophecy.
Just let me explain one thing because this is where a lot of times people get off. It is not the fact that you don’t agree with God when you’ve blown it, but you’re not confessing for forgiveness. You’re confessing that you are forgiven, that your confession is a good. The good confession is thank you, Lord Jesus, for the fact that you love me so much that you took that sin away from the eyes of God, never to see it again, and and Lord, the root of that said is I’m not trusting you, and I don’t want to live not trusting you, and so renew my mind and teach me truth, and set me free, and that’s the mindset that we live in as a Christian.
