Call-In Classic Christianity Radio – Bob George P1172 (10-09-26)

Un-Scrambling 1 John 1:9: Stop Begging for What Was Finished at Calvary

~ In corporate religious institutions, 1 John 1:9 is routinely weaponized as the ultimate transactional tool. Churchgoers are taught that salvation and fellowship with God operate like a relational “vending machine” or a “Christian bar of soap”: you stumble, insert an apology coin, beg for forgiveness, and trigger a fresh dispensation of grace to clear your account.

This completely distorts the courtroom reality of the Gospel!

When you examine 1 John 1:9 through its original Koine Greek grammar and historical context, it does not command post-cross believers to beg for daily clearance. Instead, it reveals an un-scrambled, courtroom declaration of a completed historical reality settled at the cross of Calvary where the debt was cleared!

1. The Epistolary Context: Addressing the Gnostic Heresy at Ephesus

You cannot rightly divide 1 John 1:9 without understanding the specific theological battlefield Apostle John was addressing. 1 John was written in response to an inquiry from a pastor in Ephesus regarding the rising heresy of Gnosticism.

Gnostics operated under a dualistic worldview, claiming that all physical flesh is inherently evil and only spirit is good. From this false premise, they drew two devastating conclusions:

  1. They Denied Christ’s Flesh: They claimed Jesus did not come in literal, touchable physical flesh (basar), but was merely a phantom or illusion. (This is why John opens 1 John 1 by declaring that their hands had physically touched the Word of Life.)
  2. They Denied the Reality of Sin: Because they believed sin only affected the “evil flesh,” they claimed sin itself was an illusion. They walked in spiritual darkness while piously declaring: “We have no sin” (1 John 1:8) and “We have not sinned” (1 John 1:10).

The first chapter of 1 John is not a daily maintenance manual for born-again, sealed Saints. It is a direct Socratic plea and an apostolic rebuke aimed at unsaved Gnostic teachers, shattering their intellectual pride and demanding they acknowledge the reality of their sin.

2. Deconstructing Homologeo: Agreement, Not Begging

In 1 John 1:9, the word translated as “confess” is the Koine Greek word homologeo (ὁμολογέω). It is a compound word formed from:

  • Homos: Meaning “same” or “identical”.
  • Logos: Meaning “word,” “to speak,” or “the legal account”.

Literally, homologeo means Socratic agreement—to say the exact same thing as another or to agree completely with the Judge’s verdict.

Homologeo does NOT mean begging, pleading, or asking God for forgiveness!

In light of Christ’s finished propitiation (Hilasmos), true biblical confession (homologeo) means agreeing with what God has already declared at Calvary:

  1. Agreeing that sin is real (shattering the Gnostic delusion).
  2. Agreeing that your sins were placed on Christ and permanently liquidated at the cross.

When a sealed believer stumbles in the flesh today, they do not beg for a new dispensation of grace. They stand before the Father and say: “Father, I agree that this action was independent self-will, and I agree with Your Sovereign Verdict that it was already paid for, forgiven, and taken away by my Goel at the cross of Calvary. I stand in the vertical authority of His Life!”

3. The Grammatical Proofs: Ean and the Aorist Tense

Institutional religion points to the word “If” in 1 John 1:9 (“If we confess…”) and claims it creates a conditional, works-based contract. Original Greek grammar completely demolishes this works-based interpretation:

  • The Third-Class Condition (Ean): The Greek word translated as “if” is ean (ἐάν). Ean is a Third-Class condition that denotes possibility, translating literally as “whether we do or do not.” It does not make God’s forgiveness contingent on human memory or verbal prompts!
  • The Punctiliar Aorist Tense: In Greek, the verbs used for “forgive” (aphē) and “cleanse” (katharisē) are written in the Aorist tense. The Aorist tense describes a single, completed, point-in-time past event (“to have forgiven” and “to have cleansed”)!

The Restored, Un-Scrambled Translation of 1 John 1:9:

📖 “Whether you do or do not agree with God concerning your sins, He is Faithful and Just to HAVE forgiven you, and to HAVE cleansed you of ALL unrighteousness by the Goel at the cross.”

God’s faithfulness and justice are immutable because they are anchored in the finished legal transaction of the cross—not in the emotional stability, verbal performance, or memory of human clay!

4. Exposing the “Vending Machine” Deception

To continually beg God for forgiveness today is an act of spiritual amnesia and a direct insult to the finished cross (Hebrews 6:6):

  1. Without Blood, There Is No Forgiveness: Hebrews 9:22 establishes that without the shedding of blood, there is zero forgiveness. If any further forgiveness were required today, Jesus would have to repeatedly shed His blood again and again. He is NEVER going to hang on a cross again!
  2. Reconciliation vs. Salvation: Christ’s death executed total propitiation (Hilasmos), clearing the global debt-ledger (Katallage) for all humanity. Clearing a debt washes the clay vessel, but a clean jar is still an empty jar. You are reconciled globally by His death, but you are saved vertically by His indwelling Life (Zoē) (Romans 5:10)!
  3. The Lord’s Prayer Misapplication: Jesus taught “forgive us our sins” (Matthew 6:12) while operating under Old Covenant Mosaic jurisdiction before the cross. That petition was fully answered and retired at Calvary when Christ declared, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). Post-Pentecost, no Apostle ever instructed a believer to pray for forgiveness; they commanded believers to stand in their permanent sealing and offer thanks!

Step Out of the Transactional Loop Today

Stop dropping apology coins into a cosmic vending machine. Sins were globally liquidated at Calvary.

If you are born of the Spirit, your vessel has been vertically occupied, sealed, and fused with Christ as “one spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:17; Ephesians 1:13–14). Agree with the Sovereign Verdict (homologeo), stand in your unbreakable Sovereign Firewall, and walk in the vertical authority of His indwelling Life!

Bible Study Books

In this episode of Classic Christianity Radio, Bob George responds to callers’ questions about fellowship with God, past sin, salvation, and biblical forgiveness. Dale asks whether the parable of the prodigal son illustrates a believer moving out of and back into fellowship with God; Bob argues that the story is about a lost son returning to his father, rather than a believer losing fellowship, and emphasizes his view that the New Testament describes believers as called into fellowship with Christ and continually cleansed by Jesus. Tom then shares that he still has memories and thoughts about past relationships involving sexual sin, despite having become a Christian and wanting to live purely. Bob reassures him that memories and struggles do not mean he has failed, encourages him to reject thoughts that pull him toward guilt or temptation, and points to his belief that Christ has made believers complete and holy, while acknowledging that struggles can continue throughout life. Finally, Todd asks about the tension between the assurance of forgiveness and teachings that Christians should confess sins to maintain a right relationship with God. Bob argues that salvation rests in the resurrected life of Christ, not merely in focusing on the cross, and challenges the idea that believers must repeatedly seek forgiveness to remain secure. He also interprets 1 John 1:9 as addressing people who deny their sin rather than requiring Christians to confess each sin to regain forgiveness, and stresses the importance of distinguishing between Old and New Covenant teachings. Overall, the show centers on Bob’s message of grace, assurance in Christ, and dependence on Jesus amid ongoing human struggles.

Dale — Fellowship with God

Dale asks whether the prodigal son illustrates a believer falling out of fellowship with God and later regaining it. Bob says the parable is about a lost son returning to his father, not a believer losing fellowship.

  • Bob argues that believers are called into fellowship with Christ and are continually cleansed by Jesus.
  • He contrasts the returning son with the older brother, whom he presents as an example of self-righteousness.
  • He connects the story to the contrast between receiving righteousness by faith and trying to earn it through works.

Tom — Memories of past relationships

Tom asks how to handle memories and thoughts about past relationships involving sexual sin, even though he has become a Christian and wants to live purely. Bob reassures him that having memories or struggles does not mean he has failed.

  • Bob encourages Tom to reject thoughts that draw him toward temptation or guilt and to focus on his identity in Christ.
  • He says believers are made complete and holy through Christ, while acknowledging that struggles may continue.
  • He frames ongoing weakness as a reminder to depend on Jesus.

Todd — Forgiveness and assurance

Todd asks about teachings that Christians need to keep confessing sins to maintain a right relationship with God. He also shares that he often feels defeated and questions how to understand 1 John 1:9. Bob emphasizes assurance in Christ and challenges the idea that believers must repeatedly seek forgiveness to remain secure.

He stresses distinguishing Old Covenant and New Covenant teachings to understand passages about forgiveness.

Bob says salvation comes through the resurrected life of Christ, with the cross making that life possible.

He argues that 1 John 1:9 addresses people who deny their sin, rather than requiring believers to confess each sin to regain forgiveness.

John 6:28,29

28 Therefore they said to Him, “What must we do, that we may be doing the works of God?”

29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you should believe in Him whom He has sent.”
