Call-In Classic Christianity Radio – Bob George P705 (02-03-22)

Believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ and you Will be Baptized With the Holy Spirit

You will be blessed to listen to today’s program. Listen as Bob teaches so many important truths from the bible which we can apply for our lives today. It is our hope and prayers that the word of God comes alive in your hearts as you listen in.

Tony called from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He called about Acts 2:38 and also about baptism. He remembered in the past, getting dunked in water and thinking to himself, this is dumb for I am already saved. He explained that he had heard Bob explaining on another program that about the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and how he could of cried because he himself came to understand that being baptized in water means nothing for salvation.

Tony went on to say that he had believed in water baptism his whole life, but then he himself had searched the scriptures and discovered it was real dumb to believe in water baptism as part of salvation. But he was so ignorant at the time that he got in the water thinking that was a requirement for salvation.

Bob explains (and has repeatedly stated) that we do not take doctrine out of the book of Acts. If you did, you can’t negate speaking in tongues. Or in Mark picking up snakes, drinking poison. You can’t cherry pick what you are going to believe in then. So, you have to understand that this is what was said. But what is said, and what are meant are two different things. Now in this case, when we read more here we see:

Acts 2:31-38
31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“ ‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.” ’

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

He is talking about the day of Pentecost. This was talking about that prophetic day. He was talking to Israel. Jesus is both Lord and Christ. And the Greek word “for” εἰς (eis) means because of the forgiveness of your sins, not being baptized in order to get forgiveness of sins. And right there is where the misinterpretation comes in at. There can be two types of baptism; Holy Spirit baptism and water baptism. It is being used to identify someone. And the word baptized was taking something like a piece of cloth, dipping it in a red dye and it comes out a red cloth. It’s identifying yourself with Christ Jesus.

Isn’t it strange that Jesus said go into the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; and yet they only said in the name of Jesus Christ here? Okay, so which one is right, or are they both right?

But that isn’t the issue. Acts isn’t a doctrinal book. It wasn’t intended to be a doctrinal book.

So we look at the repenting and for the forgiveness of sins, it is because of the forgiveness of sins. It is the taking away of our sins. And how many of the sins of the world were taken away at the cross? All of them!

Acts 1:5
5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

So repent, is a change of mind. Before it was the day of atonement to get their sins forgiven. Now it is understanding that Jesus did it all.

Now change your mind (repent) on where forgiveness is received, and change your mind (repent) on who Jesus is and who provided that forgiveness for you. And because of this; He has taken away your sins and you’ll receive the Holy Spirit.

Today we don’t say to people to get your sins forgiven first, then you will receive the Holy Spirit. The bible says if the Spirit of God doesn’t live in you, you don’t belong to Him. Today it’s all a package. You receive forgiveness in His resurrected life. Everyone is forgiven, now receive it, accept it, believe it.

Do not add to the gospel. Don’t even add water baptism to the gospel, because that is adding to the true gospel of Jesus; of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These people that are adding to the gospel are believing a different gospel.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is received by Faith and faith in what He has done for you.

Ralph called from Las Angeles, California. He had a question in regards to Luke 21:24, where Jesus was talking about end times and talking about the time of the gentiles.

Bob believes that the time of the Gentiles is referring to the age of the Gentiles, such as the age we are in right now where by Gentiles can be saved. We see that beginning with Cornelius. He mentioned that was the one recorded. And that happens through faith in Jesus. It is also discussed that God is waiting for the last Gentile to come in too for the age of the Gentiles to be completed and then end times.

Luke 21:24
24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

Listen in as Bob and Ralph have more of an in-depth discussion on these matters.

Troy called from New Orleans, Louisiana. He knew we are saved by grace and had a question in regards to Hebrews 10:26-31, after receiving the truth there is no longer sacrifice for covering these sins, there’s only terrible expiation of judgment and raging fire to anyone who disobeys. He wanted to know how this to relates to everything and how it fits in to the Holy Spirit of which Bob was talking about earlier.

Hebrews 10:26-31
26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Bob explains the knowledge of truth, is what was actually said earlier in Hebrews and it is sinning against this knowledge of truth that is at issue. Where it states (Hebrews 10:17) ‘Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”’ The New Covenant is the knowledge of truth being told here, where “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” So to the Hebrew, “you mean there is no more day of Atonement?” And that’s what I am telling you. You got it. You mean there is no more keeping short accounts with God (wrong interpretation of 1 John 1:9)? That’s what I am telling you! There is no more sacrifice for sins, Jesus has done it all. He did it for all. He said, “It is finished!” And if you keep on deliberating keep on sinning against this knowledge of truth, there’s no sacrifice for sins left. You’re going to go to hell. In other words, if you reject what Jesus did, by continuing on in your ways of keeping yourself forgiven (WHICH YOU CAN NOT DO), then you have never accepted what Jesus did.

So it goes on to say in here, how much more do you think a person deserves – and it doesn’t say he will, it says he “deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?” These people are acting as though Jesus didn’t even go to a cross. This new covenant is the covenant that sanctified us. It’s the thing that sets us apart from the entire religious world. When we refuse to believe in the finality of the cross, and when we refuse to walk by faith, then we are insulting the Spirit of grace. The fact that my sins and lawless acts He remembers no more. There is no more sacrifice for sins. God is not dealing with me on the basis of sin today, but on the basis of a new life. And if I refuse to believe that after receiving this knowledge of truth, then it’s a sign you are lost and you are going to hell.

Troy mentioned there are so many people that are still doing this. Bob agrees with him. There are so many people that walk in unbelief, instead of walking in the truth of the new covenant.

The next caller, Ronnie called from Locust Grove, Georgia. He acknowledged that he listened to too many preachers that got him confused over things. His question was for Bob to get Bob opinion on what was more important to God, our personal relationship with Him, or our service for Him?

Bob mentions that the answer can be found in the story of Mary and Martha in the Gospels. Where Martha was always working and Mary wanted to sit at the feet of the Lord. Jesus literally said He wanted someone to sit at His feet. The relationship is what He came for. So we could have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Our service for God doesn’t mean a flip, unless He is the one doing it in and through us. That’s what is called wood, hay and stubble. That’s us trying to live the Christian life in the energy of the flesh, and out trying to do things for God in the energy of our own flesh. All that is wood, hay and stubble and it will all be burnt. All He is looking for is faith. That’s why the only thing that counts is faith. And it doesn’t say one of the things. Faith is the only thing and faith expressing itself through love. And the only one that can love with the agape love is Him. And the only way I can plug into that love is through faith.

So the only thing we can do is walk in faith. He is the vine we are the branch. We need to abide in Him.

John 15:5
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

We need to quit analyzing ourselves and allow Him to live His life through us.

We need to step back and understand what our priority is. Our priority is to abide in Christ. It is not to abide in what I am doing. It is to abide in Christ. Let Christ do what He wants to do through you. Don’t sweat what you are doing today or tomorrow, but allow Him to do the things He wants to do in and through you. If He has a different direction for you to go tomorrow, then do that. Our role is to abide in Him and let Him to do in and through us.

At the end times there is going to be a lot of wood, hay and stubble – it’s going to be burnt up. And Bob says, (in jest) “my ash pile is going to be bigger than your ash pile.” But the only thing that we will be rewarded for is the things we have allowed Him to do in and through us.

Allow God to work in and through you. This is your perfect worship:

Romans 12:1
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
