Call-In Classic Christianity Radio – Bob George P1024 (04-17-25)

Do You Want to Get Well?

~ “When Jesus saw him lying there and realized that he had spent a long time in this condition, He asked him, “Do you want to get well?” John 5:6

~ Jesus, God in the flesh, asked, “Do you want to get well?” And today, the Holy Spirit is asking the same question, “Do you want to get well?” And many times, people actually do not want to get well with their soul. They might be looking for physical healing, but they are not interested in being healed in their inner being. And so, the healing takes place when a person wants to be healed. That is key to being made whole. And the Truth will set you free, and you will know Him indeed.

~ Of His speaking these things, many believed in Him. Therefore Jesus was saying to the Hebrews having believed in Him, “If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set free you.” John 8:30-32

John 6:28,29

28 Therefore they said to Him, “What must we do, that we may be doing the works of God?”

29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you should believe in Him whom He has sent.”

Victory Over Depression Teaching

—–

Bob George addresses a caller, Mandy, who is concerned about a 15-year-old girl she mentors who is suicidal and cutting. Bob emphasizes that depression is a thinking pattern, not a disease, and suggests focusing on unrealistic expectations and misplaced dependency. He recommends a tape series on overcoming depression and stresses the importance of understanding that Christ’s forgiveness is absolute. Another caller, Luciano, discusses the difficulty of self-forgiveness in a new Christian. Bob clarifies that true forgiveness comes from understanding Christ’s forgiveness. Marilyn inquires about the interpretation of Genesis 6:4, and Bob explains what he believes it refers to the “sons of God” as men of renown, not angels. Gary shares his struggle with faith after losing his wife and expresses concern about his daughter’s conversion to Catholicism. Bob advises continuing to share the truth of Scripture with her.

—–

“Well again, Mandy, if a person, if she’s despondent, She’s depressed, and in order to be depressed, there’s ingredients connected with it. A person can be, as you know, Mandy, a professing Christian, but have no maturity. And quite frankly, when you’re that young, it’s difficult to obtain very much of a maturity at that at that age. But still, drugs are not the solution to depression. Depression isn’t a disease. It’s a thinking pattern. Let me, let me share with you what, what, first, what I would deal with, with a person like that, I would try to explain to her that God made us in such a way whereby our emotions are going to predictably respond to whatever we’re thinking. In other words, if you have ever felt and I’ll ask you the question, Mandy, have you ever felt the emotion of anxiety? Yes, yeah, what were you thinking? Anxious thoughts? Weren’t you? Yeah, that’s why you were feeling the emotion of anxiety. If you’ve ever felt the emotion of sadness, what are you thinking? Sad thoughts? Absolutely, if you’re if you felt the emotion of fear, what are you thinking? Fearful thoughts. Yeah, we’re made that way by God. There’s nothing unusual about that at all. Our emotions predictably are going to respond to whatever we’re thinking. So if we’re thinking depressing thoughts, we’re going to feel depressed. So we really don’t have feeling problems. That’s how it manifests itself.

But the cause of those feelings is being caused by our thinking. Whenever you get into depression, there’s two initial things that you’re dealing with, unrealistic expectations and misplaced dependency. Now we were all created by God to live in dependency upon God that we, none of us, were created independent people. We were created dependent people to be living in total dependency upon the Father. Now, Jesus modeled that Mandy, when here was God himself on this earth, and yet he set aside that prerogative and lived in total dependency upon his Father, didn’t he? He said, I don’t do anything unless the Father tells me to do it, and I don’t say anything unless the Father tells me to say it and how to say it. Now, that’s total dependency, isn’t it? So Jesus was telling us how to live as a man, not as God. You and I can’t live as God. We’re not God. He came to this earth and took upon himself our humanity in order to teach us how to live as a human being, and that is in total dependency upon the Father. So we were created by God to live in dependency upon God.

Now, when we refuse to live in dependency upon God, we have no option except to find other things to live in dependency upon. And that’s where people turn to all kinds of things to live in dependency booze, alcohol, relationships, church, all kinds of things we can turn that’s a substitute for God himself. So that’s a misplaced dependency, then an unrealistic expectation. And I think many times in teenagers, that’s a big one, because we have unrealistic expectations toward our friends. We think everybody should like us and they don’t. We think we should be prettier and we’re not, and all of these things are preoccupation with self and and that is what kicks off, ultimately, depression. Whenever you run into an adverse circumstance, such as an insult or an injury or a rejection, she’s had some place down the line, an insult from somebody, a rejection from somebody, or an insult or a rejection of some kind from someone. Now she’s going to respond to that. We’ve all family, yeah, so she’s going to respond to that. It’s not the issue, it’s not the insult or the injury or the rejection that gets you into depression. It’s how you respond to that. And the proof of that is one person could experience the same thing and not respond in the same way. One person’s trust in the Lord and said, Well, if Christ is for me, who can be against me? I don’t care whether you insult me or not. You know Jesus loves me. Another person sits there and gets buried under that. They get into disappointment. They get buried in that seed bed of disappointment.

And it’s in that seed bed of disappointment Mandy that we have a choice as to whether we’re going to switch our dependency on Jesus and give thanks in all things for this is the will of God concerning us in Christ, Jesus, or whether we’re going to get into a fear, anger relationship. And there’s no such thing as depression apart from fear and anger. Oh, really. Okay, no such thing. When you see a fearful, angry person, they’re headed down the downward spiral of depression. After you get into that says, into that syndrome, you get into self pity, and the more self pity you have, the deeper the depression, and the more self pity, the more depression, the more self pity, the more depression. And you continue to allow that self pity to grab your mind, because that’s what self pity is, is thinking How pitiful My situation is that can go into despair and hopelessness and ultimately lead to suicide that can happen to a Christian or a non Christian. All we have to do is to let our minds get taken over by error.

Jesus said truth is what sets us free. And if truth is what set us free, it error has to be what binds us. And so what it is, is a renewing of the mind Mandy, where you have to elevate the hope of a person, because without hope, nothing you say is going to work. You have to, you have to give assurance to people that there’s hope here. And and a God, if God’s for you, who can be against you. That is one passage of scripture that I think can help a person in that more than anything else, if God’s for you and He loves you, who can be against you. And so keep your mind on how much God loves you, and you can get all the rejection from the world. That’s not unusual. Jesus said, In this world, you’re going to have tribulation, but there’s someone there that you can talk to, count on, and that’s the Lord Jesus. And ultimately, that’s the message. It has to seep into the mind of the depressed person we have a…

Mandy, we have a tape series called How to experience victory over depression, and that that has absolutely transformed people out of mental hospitals and everything else it’s been it’s one of those things that if a person is open to listening to the truth in those tapes, they will no longer be suffering from depression. I can guarantee that. Now the qualification there is, are they do they want to get well? one of first questions Mandy, that I sometimes would ask people in counseling is the question that Jesus asked the guy. He said, Do you want to get well? And you know, it’s almost like, What do you mean? Do I want to get well? I’m trying to get in his water and get healed all the time. And he said, No, you’re not. I think you’re playing games. Do you want to get well? Because if you want to get well, then this will get you well. But you have to want to get well. Sometimes wallowing in self pity feels good, especially if you can get others to come to your pity party. Now, one of the problems is, is you invite people to your pity party and they don’t want to come, and then you get more depressed. And that’s one of the problems. ~ Bob George
