Call-In Classic Christianity Radio – Bob George P1135 (06-04-26)

What About The 1st John 1:9 Passage of Scripture?

~ Whether you Agree (with God) or not concerning your sins, He is Faithful and Just to Have forgiven you and to Have cleansed you of ALL unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

~ Confession literally means “to agree with God” rather than to beg or ask Him for forgiveness. Based on the Greek word homologeo, it means saying the same thing as another or assenting. In a biblical context, this means agreeing with God about the true nature of sin and, more importantly, agreeing that Jesus already took away all sins completely on the cross.

Many people misunderstand confession by treating it as a repetitive requirement to maintain salvation or stay in fellowship with God. Because the sacrifice of Jesus was a complete, one-time propitiation for the whole world, asking for ongoing forgiveness is unnecessary and wrong, and ignores the finished work of the cross. True salvation is receiving eternal life rather than constantly trying to get individual sins forgiven.

Continually seeking new forgiveness through confession booths or repetitive recitation of scripture is actually a form of willful sinning. This mindset effectively denies what Jesus has already accomplished, which is equivalent to trampling on the Truth. Ultimately, true confession for a believer means shifting away from asking God to redo what is already done and instead resting in the faith that Jesus has done it all.

“God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.” (1 Corinthians 1:9). Once in the fellowship of Jesus Christ, a believer is eternally in the fellowship. There is no bouncing in and out of fellowship. God’s fellowship with a believer (a saved person) is not dependent on what a person does but on what Christ did. Bringing God’s level of forgiveness and fellowship down to man’s level of forgiveness and fellowship is a travesty.

People use the 1 John 1:9 as a Christian bar of soap. People say, “When I do something wrong, it makes me feel good to ask for forgiveness from God. There can’t be anything wrong with that, can there?” This is how the keeping short accounts with God is justified by many in the world today as a means of getting back in good graces with God. The confession booth and the confessing of sins on a daily basis is the human works justification for using this single verse of scripture to keep yourself clean.

Romans 5:6-11

For at just the right time, while we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Therefore, since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from wrath through Him! For if, when we were enemies of God, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life! Not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

What About 1 John 1:9

Bob George leads a detailed discussion on several theological topics, focusing primarily on the interpretation of 1 John 1:9 and its implications for Christian doctrine. He begins by addressing a caller’s confusion about the passage, emphasizing that the verse cannot be reconciled (based on the way it is taught today) with the belief that Jesus has already taken away the sins of the world. Bob argues that if Christ’s sacrifice was truly final and complete, then the notion of continually confessing sins for forgiveness is contradictory. He explains that 1 John 1:9 is often misunderstood and is actually directed at non-believers or those who do not have the truth of Christ within them, rather than at Christians who are already saved. According to the Scriptures, true believers have Jesus—the truth—living in them permanently, and thus cannot claim to be without sin, but also do not need to repeatedly seek forgiveness, as their sins have already been dealt with at the cross.

Bob further elaborates on the nature of salvation, stressing that it is not merely about forgiveness of sins, but about receiving new life through Christ. He highlights that salvation is a gift of life, and that believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, which guarantees their eternal security. He refutes the idea that Christians can lose their salvation, arguing that such a belief misunderstands the nature of grace and the completeness of Christ’s work and undermines the Truth of the Scriptures themselves. Grace, he insists, is unconditional, and to add any condition to it undermines its very definition.

The conversation also touches on the topic of dispensationalism. Bob rejects the idea that different parts of the New Testament are written exclusively to HEBREWS or Gentiles, pointing out that in Christ, there is no distinction between HEBREW and Gentile, slave or free, male or female. He asserts that the Bible is written to all Christians, and that dividing scripture along ethnic or dispensational lines is both unnecessary, confusing and wrong. Instead, he encourages listeners to focus on the distinction between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant, with the latter being established through Christ’s death and resurrection.

Throughout the program, Bob emphasizes the importance of understanding the fullness of the gospel, the assurance of eternal life, and the role of the Holy Spirit in guiding and growing believers. He cautions against relying on human commentaries or intellectual systems, advocating instead for direct revelation from God through the Spirit. He also addresses practical questions about recognizing true believers, noting that while outward signs may vary, the key is a personal relationship with Christ and assurance of salvation. The program concludes with recommendations for further study and encouragement to walk in faith, grounded in the finished work of Jesus.

“And he will be with you forever. So, what do we know about the truth or Jesus? He’s with us, lives in us, and will be with us forever. So, how could you think that First John one nine of a person claiming to be without sin is deceived and the truth is not in us. If the truth is in you, it will be with you forever. So he’s talking to people in whom the truth is not in them, and they’re talking to lost people. This is a great lost passage to teach to a person that if you’re claiming to be without sin, many people do, but the Gnostics certainly did. You’re deceived, and the truth, Christ Jesus, and His truth is not in you. You’re not saved, but if you agree, and again, if you have any respect at all for the Greek language in which the Bible was written, then you have to go back to see what it said, and the interpretation in that is the if is I don’t know whether you’re ever going to come to your senses or not, that would be speaking to the Gnostic, it could be speaking to people today. I don’t know if you’re ever going to come to your senses, but if you do today, tomorrow, or whenever it might be, and you agree with God concerning your sins, that’s what confess means, agree with God concerning your sins. Agree that you are a sinner. He is faithful and just, not to forgive, but to have forgiven your sins, and to have cleansed you of all unrighteousness. When you’ve been cleansed of all unrighteousness, how much righteousness is how much unrighteousness is left for you to be cleansed. None, you see, none. I believe we lost Andy, didn’t we? So, if you’re listening, Andy, once you’ve been cleansed of all unrighteousness, there isn’t any more unrighteousness to be cleansed of. And so, just take it for what it says. If we agree with God concerning our sins, even there in asking God to forgive you, that’s why I don’t understand this. You’re agreeing with God that you’re a sinner, and He’s faithful and just, not because you agree that you’re a sinner, but He’s faithful and just to have forgiven your sins and to cleansed you of all unrighteousness while you were yet a sinner. That’s why it says in the scripture that while we were yet enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son. How much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved by His life? So, the issue is, if we agree with God concerning our sins, He’s faithful and just to have forgiven you and to have cleansed you of all of your unrighteousness, and if you claim that you have not sinned, you make him out to be a liar, and his word has no place in his life in your life. You’re lost. I don’t know why it’s so hard for people to see that that’s a passage to people who are lost, except the fact that we needed a Christian bar of soap in order to keep ourselves in fellowship, and the Bible doesn’t talk about the fact ever being out of fellowship. As a matter of fact, it says that if you’re in Christ, you are in fellowship. If you’re in the light, as He is in the light, the result of being in the light is that the two of you, Jesus and you, have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son continually keeps on cleansing you of every sin imaginable, and so it just all ties in, Andy. I think we got you back here, but it all ties into the fact that it’s a once and for all done, that if Christ did not take away the sins of the world at the cross and gave you life, the next time you sinned, you’d die. And the reason that you and I know that we have eternal life is because of the eternal consequence of the cross. And so, when you’re dealing with forgiveness, you’re not dealing with forgiveness to keep in fellowship, you’re dealing with forgiveness to be taken away from the eyes of God, never to deal with us again. God isn’t dealing with you and me on the basis of sin. He’s dealing with us on the basis of a new life in Christ Jesus. He’s already dealt with our sin. He dealt with it once, he dealt with it for all, and cried out from the cross, ‘It is finished, and the Father said, ‘Propitiation has taken place. I am satisfied with that offering. Only the blood of God Himself was of such quality that it could take away the sins of the world. The blood of bulls and goats can’t take away sin, covered it, but not take it away. And so, if God has said that He has taken away your sin, never to see it again, then He has taken away. Your sin, and if indeed He has taken away your sin, then why would you be asking Him to forgive what He has already forgiven and taken away? That is not faith, it’s presumption. Well, Andy, I’m sorry we brought losing you on the with your cell there, but I hope I hope you heard that, and hope that helps.” ~ Bob George

John 6:28,29

28 Therefore they said to Him, “What must we do, that we may be doing the works of God?”

29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you should believe in Him whom He has sent.”
