Classic Christianity – The Book of John P53 (06-06-23)

Are You Telling it Like it Is? Are You in Christ Jesus?

~ Today, there are lots of milquetoast “Christians” that don’t tell it like it is. They are either afraid of their place in their flesh, or maybe they are not saved in the first place. Our attitude should be that of Christ Jesus, if the Holy Spirit is alive living in the person today. Jesus told it like it is to those that thought they knew it all. He spoke to those that were dead with what the Father told him to say. Today, if you are in Christ Jesus, you have the same Holy Spirit living in you too. Allow Him to tell it like it is through you!

~ “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” Matthew 23:27,28

~ “And as we’ve talked before, it was job security that killed Jesus. It were people sitting there saying, if we allow this man to continue teaching what he’s teaching, I’m not going to be able to teach my legalism anymore. I’m not going to be able to be the authority on the law, because he’s teaching that you don’t need the law once you’re saved, because you’re led now by the Spirit of God living in you, and what value am I going to have, unless I’m an interpreter of the law. And so we gotta get rid of this guy teaching grace, or I’m not going to be appreciated. And more importantly, I’m not going to have a job.

The same is true today. Nothing new about this at all. It started back then it’s just as true today. And the reason that you have legalists, who are adamant against people teaching grace is what good is a legalist, if you’re under grace, you’re not needed anymore. Unless you want to be an evangelist, and go teach the law in order to convince people which is what the law is for to convince people that you’re a sinner. So you’ll turn to Christ. So you can walk by grace, but after you’re saved, I have no purpose. And that’s why they’re adamant against the teaching of grace, is because number one, I cannot control people. And even more importantly, I have no benefit. I have no worth. I’m a law teacher, I’m a law interpreter. And if you don’t need interpretation, what am I good for? Same thing that was true back then, is true today. And so the Lord Jesus Christ was received with those who were ready to have something different than the bondage of the law and the death that comes with the law, and to grab a hold of a message of truth and grace. And to those people, they responded immediately to Jesus responded by the 1000s. But with that response came this rebellion upon the leadership.” ~ Bob George

We’ve been talking about Jesus, as he continued to introduce himself to the Hebrew world. He came and announced himself as the Messiah, as God with us that we just were singing about. And there was a contradiction of responses to that you had one group who was thrilled to death with what they heard, because they had been waiting on the Messiah. The problem that you ran into at that particular juncture was the fact that the people waiting for the Messiah were waiting on a Messiah who was going to rule who was going to take the rule away from Rome, and to be able to rule the Hebrew people themselves. They were looking for a political Messiah, such was the case was Judas. They did not understand this, the Messiah that came to save the souls of man, they were looking more for the physical, the outward. And so there was a mixed bag of tricks. When, when Jesus announced who he was, there was a mixed response from people, to the leaders of the Hebrew nation, to the leaders, and I want to emphasize that fact that this was not all the Hebrew people, because on the day of Pentecost, there are 1000s upon 1000s of people who were saved that day, and they were all Hebrews. But the Hebrew leaders, they took great exception to Jesus and His teaching. And they said, What are we doing? What are we accomplishing by allowing this man to continue to function, that before long, the whole world is going to follow Him, and we’re gonna lose our place and our nation. And as we’ve talked before, it was job security that killed Jesus.

And the reason that you have legalists, who are adamant against people teaching grace is what good is a legalist. If you’re under grace, you’re not needed anymore. But with that response came this rebellion upon the leadership.

And so we’re told in verse 10, of chapter 12, that they not only made plans to kill Jesus, in order to get rid of him. But Jesus then went and raised Lazarus from the dead. And every one was now going out to see Lazarus, who had been raised from the dead by Jesus. And so they said, we might as well kill him too. Let’s get rid of both of them. Get rid of Jesus who raised him from the dead and get rid of that guy that was raised from the dead. Eradicate them off the face of the earth, get rid of them. Why? Because if we don’t, we’re not going to be in important. Isn’t that amazing guys How selfish humanity can be. But that was the case. And so they made a plot and said, of putting Jesus to death. And but at the same time, there were many people putting their faith in Him.

Now we’re told in verse 12, that the next day, a great crowd that came from the feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. And so they took palm branches and they went out to meet him. That’s what we know today is Palm Sunday. And they shouted Hosanna. And the word Hosanna means save. So in other words, they identified him as the Savior Hosanna save blessing as the one who comes in the name of the Lord bless it, is the king of Israel. Now, did the Hebrew leaders like that term? I mean, the last thing they wanted Jesus to be was the king of Israel, because they’re gonna be in worse shape than they were before they thought. But here he was identified by the followers as the king of Israel. And Jesus found a young donkey and set upon it. And he said, Don’t be afraid, oh, daughter of Zion, you see, your King is coming. Seated on a donkey is called, quote, and, and colt and he quoted the scripture in regard to that prophecy. Now at first his disciples were told did not understand this. It was only after Jesus was glorified, that they realized that these things have been written about him, and that they had done these things to him. Now, guys, I want us to stop for a moment and think through this. We’re told here that these were the disciples that lived with Jesus, for a good three years, they saw all of the miracles that Jesus did, beginning with the turning the wine or the water into wine at the wedding feast of Cana, they saw him do all of these different miracles, and finally, the ultimate of raising Lazarus from the dead. They saw him do that. And yet, they did not understand the totality of the complexity of who he was. And it says that is, is that his the his disciples, they didn’t understand these, they, they, they knew he did them, but they didn’t understand what this meant. And guys, that’s why it is so important for us to not stop with just glorifying an event. But of going beneath the skin to say, what does that mean? And there are many people who never ever deal with the meaning of something, they just hear something and that’s it. They never get what does this mean? What does this mean to me? And as I’ve said before, you do not put your faith in what the Bible says, you put your faith in what the Bible means. Now, you don’t know what it means, unless you know what it says. But you can know what it says and not have a clue what it means. Are we together? And there’s where interpretation comes in. A computer knows what the Bible says, an actor studying lines knows what the Bible says, I can read a passage to you and you can read it in your Bible and know what the Bible says, Can’t you? Any doubts on that? The issue is what does it mean? Now how am I going to learn what it means? You think well aren’t they the same? No, they’re not the same. They’re two different things all together, knowing what it says and knowing what it means two different things all together. Now we say okay, well, then I need to teach you or somebody needs to teach you what this means. And so we’ve formed our seminaries. And we formed all of these Bible schools, and I’m going to teach you what it means. So you go to the Bible school for four years, and hear what the professor says it means. Do you yet know what it means? Or do you know what the professor thinks it means? Which is it guys? That’s why you come out of seminary teaching exactly what you were taught in seminary. If you go to Baptist seminary, you’re going to come up preaching Baptist. If you go to a Methodist seminary, you’re gonna come out preach a Methodist, if you go to Seventh Day Adventist, you’re gonna go preach in that. You’re going to preach what you’ve been taught by somebody to teach, but you yourself don’t know whether it’s true or not. Unless Unless you do exactly what the Scripture says, No eye has seen, no ear has heard. Nor mind is conceived of those things that God has prepared for those who love Him. But it must be revealed by who? The Spirit of God.

Now, the Spirit of God, first of all, cannot reveal what something means unless the Spirit of God lives in you. That’s why a person who’s not born again, doesn’t have a clue of the meaning of the word of God. That’s why you have so many different interpretations. So many denominations, you got people standing in the pulpit, that were called to preach, but have never yet been called to Jesus. And you’ve got people who have been taught what it says, but don’t have the Spirit of God living in them. So you interpreted leaning on your own understanding, not acknowledging him, not allowing him to direct your paths. And that’s how you get all these interpretations of the Scripture. So the Bible is saying to us, or God is saying to us, I want you to know what this means to you. And the Bible says, You can’t do it, folks, by understanding Greek. If only the only way that you can understand the meaning of the word of God is to study Greek, then how come you can’t find a Christian in Greece? If the understanding of what the Bible means is the study of Hebrew, how come the people who didn’t even have to go to cemetery seminary, excuse me, to learn Hebrew, crucified the Son of God? You do not know the meaning of the word of God by studying original languages, because the people that didn’t even have to study those languages are just as dead as you are, until you come alive in Christ. And so you can go to all of the educational facilities in the world, and nothing wrong with that. Because it might help you to understand what it says and to study what it says. But guys, if you stop there, you’re gonna come out as dead as you went in there. And if you don’t depend upon the Spirit of God, to reveal the meaning of the word of God to you, personally, you’ll walk out of this place as dead as you came in. I can teach you what the Spirit of God has revealed to me. But you’ve got to let the Spirit of God reveal it to you. Do we understand that? And guys, that’s why the good news is, is you don’t have to go study for 100 years to know this Bible. I don’t care what education system you have, I don’t care if you didn’t graduate from grade school. If you know how to read, and you depend on the Spirit of God, he’s going to teach you what it means. That’s why it says that people would pay millions of dollars, kings would pay for what you and I have available to us when we’re in dwelt by the Spirit of God. But guys, we negate that factor. Now, these disciples, they did not understand what Jesus was saying. They knew what he did. They knew what he said. They didn’t say I didn’t hear what he said. They knew what he said. They just didn’t understand. Why Why didn’t they understand? Why didn’t they understand then why we couldn’t understand today? Unless what? The Spirit of God lives in you. Had the Spirit of God come to live in these guys yet? Had they? No, no.

Bob George 13:54
Were the disciples saved as we went, we know what salvation is today? Salvation, is the receiving of life isn’t not. The receiving of life is when you receive the Holy Spirit. On the day that you come to Christ for life, you’re alive spiritually. Are we together? Now, they were not alive spiritually, until the day of Pentecost. How could they have been alive spiritually when the Spirit of God did live in them yet? When did the Spirit of God come to live in the disciples? On the day of Pentecost. Turn with me back to the Gospel of John Chapter 21, Chapter 20, excuse me. Verse 19.

Verse 19, on the evening of the first day of the week, when the disciples were together with the doors what? Locked. How come for fear of the Judeans. Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Can you imagine somebody coming in walking through the wall and saying peace be with you? When he said when he said this, he showed them his hands and his side and disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Now, guys, this was very shortly before Pentecost. Where were the disciples who had followed Jesus for three years? Seen he raised Lazarus. You’d think that you’re pretty convinced by that. Were they convinced that Jesus was maybe the Messiah? Yeah. Did they know what that meant? No. How come? They couldn’t know what it meant. Why? Because the Spirit of God didn’t live in him yet. And unless the Spirit of God lives in yet, he can’t reveal what it means. So here were the disciples in utter fear, Peter and all the rest of them living behind locked doors, in utter fear.

Now turn over the book of Acts, next page over. In chapter two, the Holy Spirit came. And he came upon the disciples. He came to live within them the day that salvation was now complete, the Cross had already occurred. And this was some days later, on the day of Pentecost, 50 days after His ascension, that they were together and the Holy Spirit came to indwell the believer, to make a brand new person that had never been created before. A person alive spiritually with a total inability to ever lose that life. The day of Pentecost. Why did they have permanent life on the day of Pentecost when they received the Holy Spirit?Because of the cross where He took away the cause of death? Because of the cross of Jesus Christ, where he took away the sins of the entire world, took it away, never to see it again. Now, somebody had a guy the other day say, Well, Jesus didn’t complete His work. He said, he said, he took away the sins of the world, and I still see it. Who did he take away the sins of the world, from whose eyes? God’s. When Jesus died on the cross, and shed the blood of God Himself for our sins. He looked at the Father and the Father said, propitiation has taken place, I am satisfied. That offering of the blood of God took away sins from my eyes forever. When he say he took away the sins of the world, who do you take it away from? The eyes of God. When God looks upon you, who does he see? The righteousness of Jesus, clothed in his righteousness. When he looks upon a lost man, what does he see? A lost man, naked, in need clothes, but naked, until you accept the life of Jesus. So the day of Pentecost are the most important days. I wonder. I’m surprised we don’t celebrate that over here the way they do in Europe. They have Pentecost Sunday over there, maybe some other denominations do, we ought to be celebrating that as the most important day of our lives as a church member. Celebrating the day that God came to invade his creation and give life to the dead. So prior to this time, these men didn’t understand. Why? They weren’t and well for the Spirit.

Now, after the Spirit of God came to live in these people, in Peter, who just a few days earlier, they were behind locked doors, in fear of the Judeans, who they knew that if they killed Jesus, they would kill them. And all of a sudden, this man Peter, who was hiding behind doors, stands up in front of the whole crowd, with the 11, raised his voice, and addressed the crowd. Fellow Judeans and all of you who live in Jerusalem let me explain this to you. Let me explain what this means. This is the same Peter who a few days before, didn’t understand what he was doing. But now indwelt by the Spirit is going to explain the meaning of Have all of this. So listen carefully to what I say. These men aren’t drunk, as you suppose it’s only nine in the morning if it was five, maybe different, but it’s only nine. But this was what was spoken by the prophet Joel. In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people, your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, your old mental dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I’ll pour out my Spirit of those days and they will prophesy. What do you mean prophesy prophesy about the Lord. I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs of the earth below blood and fire billows of smoke and the sun will be turned to darkness in the moon to blood, before the coming of the angel and the glorious day of the Lord and everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved. Men of Israel listen to this. This Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him. As you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God set purpose and foreknowledge and you with the help of wicked men put Him to death by nailing him to a cross. This is the same Peter guys that was hiding behind doors, who’s now saying this Jesus is the one you killed. Think there’s been a change in his life? Does it sound like a different Peter? Is he denying the Lord anymore to two little women? Cowering? No, he’s up boldly proclaiming that this Jesus that you crucified is the Son of God. That God raised Him up from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. David, your David said this about him, I saw the Lord before always before me because he’s at my right hand, and I will not be shaken. And therefore my heart is glad my tongue rejoices my body will also live in hope, because you will not abandon me to the grave. Nor will you let the Holy One see decay. And you have made known to me the paths of life, and you will fill me with joy in your presence. Brothers, he said, I tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried and his tomb is here today. But he was a prophet, and knew that God had promised him on an oath that he would place one of his descendants on the throne. Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of Christ, that He was not abandoned to the grave. Nor did his body see decay. And God has raised this Jesus to life. And we’re all witnesses to this fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he’s received from the Father, the promised Holy Spirit, and has poured out, what you now see in hear, for David did not ascend to heaven. And yet he said, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit up my right hand and tell I make your enemies a footstool for your feet. Therefore, let all Israel be assured of this. God has made this Jesus whom you crucified, both Lord and God. Does this sound like a wimpy man behind closed doors? What’s the difference? The Holy Spirit. What’s the difference? The Holy Spirit living in him and you, your only hope of glory.

There are many people today possibly sitting in this room or within the sound of my voice, who may be like the disciples, heard things about Jesus but they didn’t understand all this. Why? They didn’t have the capability of understanding. Why? They weren’t possessed by the Holy Spirit. Or if they were in dwelt by the Holy Spirit, they weren’t relying upon the Holy Spirit to reveal truth to them. They’re just relying on their own information or I’ll just come on Sunday and rely on all Bob to give it to me. And so the church has become a hired gun place, where if you got somebody just bring them on Sunday and ole Bob will shoot them down. That is not the church. This room in here is not the place for evangelism to take place. This room in here is to grow the saints. So that when you go out where the lost are, you can evangelize and then bring them in to grow. We’ve reversed it. Make the church the evangelistic place. That’s where you can get saved. Because it’s good, where your saved here, you’ll stay here.

Guys, when you are indwelt, by the Spirit of God, you are a new creation. If any man be in Christ, and Christ in them, he is a new, what? Creation. You had to be born by your mom and dad. That’s the only way you got here was because of what mom and dad did. But you also have to be born again now spiritually. You had a natural birth. Now you need a spiritual birth. And your mom and dad cannot give you spiritual birth. Only God can create a spiritual being. Mom and Dad created a natural being. But only God can create a spiritual being. And so therefore God did not birth you so to speak, he created you. You were not created in the image of God, when you were born into this world. You were created in the image of Adam, born in the image of Adam. And we’re told that in Genesis that when God when when Adam and Eve had Seth, Seth was born in the image of Adam, Adam and Eve was created in the image of God, Seth was born in the image of Adam. Are we together? You weren’t created in the image of God, you were born. You never were created until you were born again. When you were born again, you’re created now in the image of God, you now have a spiritual birth that can only be brought about by the Spirit of God. Now you got someone living in you. His name is God. The Holy Spirit of God lives in you. He said you have the mind of Christ living in you. Why? Because you got God living in you. You didn’t come without his head.
