We Have a New Identity in Christ When We are Saved

As a reminder to all our radio and online listeners, we are listening to edited legacy programs brought to you by Bob George Ministries. In order to bring these programs to you we sometimes need to repeat some of the previous program in order for us to bring you the entirety of the original program as to the best of our abilities and fit it in to the half hour format version we are in right now. We feel it is more important for you to hear the entirety of the original radio show (over a course of either two or three days) and in the original context as much as possible, as opposed to cutting off or dicing them up between the original broadcasts. So with that in mind, we review a little of yesterday’s lessen.

Bob continues on telling the story about his dad and that his dad was a lawyer. He tells the story of when his dad got cancer and the flying back and forth he was doing. He realized at that point in time that all the things he had placed such great emphasis were meaningless in comparison to eternity. Listen in as he tells the story in his own way.

Psalm 46:10
¹⁰ He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

Bob realized that what was important to understand, is that God came down here, and enabled us to be born again. He reached down to you and me and enabled us to be born again of His Spirit, and to come into a relationship with the very God that created this entire universe. That is what is important. All of these other things, they are fading away. The world and its desires pass away.

1 John 2:17
¹⁷ The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

There going to pass way physically when God gives a new world. They will pass away for us, when we die physically.

So now we begin to identity that we are a child of the living God. Now it is no longer in what we do, but who we are. For if our identity is on what we do in the world, it could be wiped out with a minor stroke of catastrophe. But if we are a child of God, that can never be taken away.

Truth will set you free. And, error (which is lies) will keep you in bondage. Satan will do everything in his power to get you off of your identity as being a child of God.

Bob continues on teaching about dependency. He spoke of the dependency on a profession. Now he segues into psychological dependencies. For example, the flesh tries to be better at something. Psychological dependency is totally contrary to the word of God. And that is the main danger of it. Satan will do everything in his power to get you off your identity (as a child of God). For example, he may call you a thief. Or he may call you a drunk or an alcoholic. Or a anorexic, or a bulimic, or a schizophrenic. Or a maniac depressive. Or an adult child of an alcoholic. All of these identities are done very cleverly, by very clever people, by very persuasive people, who are making an awful lot of money, through calling God a liar, when He said you are a child of God. And we (the creators of these scientific sounding names) know more than the God of the universe who created everything.

Now folks, if this message angers you, then that is good. Because that just goes to show you that your identity is not in being a child of God, but you have placed your confidence is someone’s school degree, instead of the living God. And all a degree is is reading someone else’s books, and never investigating whether the person that wrote it has a brain in their head or not. But simply studying what is in that book, long enough, in order to pass a test, in order to get a good grade. Now, you do that long enough and then you get a degree. And you can have more degrees than a thermometer my friend, and all you know are the thoughts of another person. And, you have no idea what that person is like.

Bob goes on to mention that he went to school in Indiana during the days of The Kinsey Reports, in regards to sexual behavior and also in regards to child rearing. And that man, who was a professor at that time, raised his son in the same crib with a monkey. And I tell you, if you knew that individual, you would not be impressed with his writings. And if you knew his lifestyle, you would not be impressed with the writings. But the fact of the matter is that no one digs into the author. We just memorize what’s in the book.

And so someone comes up and assigns a name to something and they call it “bulimic.” And that’s a nice sounding name, and it sounds scientific, and I can’t quite figure out what it is, so that’s what I am. That becomes your identity. And so as long as you think that is what you are, eating and throwing up is not going to be inconsistent to what you are. Because that is what a bulimic does if that is who you are. A schizophrenic is a double-minded person and the bible says is unstable in all ways, and we put the label schizophrenic on it. And now we can collect a hundred dollars an hour to treat someone like this. But the bible says you are double-minded. You’ve got one foot in the world and one foot with God. And you’re going to stagger down the street with that. And, there is a solution out of that, out of the word of God!

Oh, you’re a “manic depressive.” And you’re just hopeless without “my” treatment. The only issue is, just look in the bible and see if you find that in there. Do you find people that are depressed in there? Why of course you do. You are going to find a lot of people that are depressed in the bible, Job was one of them. Did they give Job Prozac?

We need to understand the whole bible was written about solving heart problems. That’s why in the word of God we read that Jesus did not need man’s testimony regarding man. Jesus is saying to us, “I made man.” Who knows more about us than the one that created us?

John 2:25
²⁵ He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.

Now people come up with all types of feeble arguments and say, “I suppose if you had your arm broken, you wouldn’t go to a doctor.” Why of course we would go to a doctor. There isn’t anything in the bible about how to set a broken arm. But there is a total in the bible about how to mend a broken heart; how to take care of fear; the solution to self-centeredness. There is no such thing as a depressed person who is not in self pity. There is no such thing. And, the more we are into depression, the more we are into self pity. Now it makes them mad when they hear that, but it doesn’t negate the truth of it. We have to understand that the word of God speaks to issues like these. And we need to have our minds renewed. And if our mind is renewed, our emotions will follow suite. We’re made that way. God made us that way! But what Satan wants us to do is to focus on our false identities. After all, how could I be a bulimic and a child of God at the same time? Those are two different identities.

Now, can I be a child of God that throws up after eating. Yes, but a person doing this is a child of God that is throwing up after eating. They are not a bulimic. That’s why it doesn’t make any sense anymore.

But on the other hand, if I am a bulimic, and I have adopted that identity, then it makes all the sense in the world to go throw up. After all, that is what bulimics do. Heck, you don’t got to a counselor for being an ape, for liking bananas. Because that is what apes do. This is what Satan is trying to get us to do, to get our identities on what we do or what we have, so that you can boost about what you do. But these things don’t come from God, they come from the world. The world and all these things in the world are going to pass away. Probably 10 years from now they’ll have a new name for it.

So we are going to have to understand that these heart problems have been here since the beginning of time. So was God just “out-of-date” and just saying that we’ll just have to wait for all the psychologists (like Freud and Skinner and Bradshaw) to come along, because I don’t have the answers to those things? But if you just live long enough, someone will come along to have an answer for that.

Folks, there isn’t anymore depression today then when Jesus came here. In fact, 60% of the world’s population in Jesus day were enslaved. So how did they deal with it? Did the bible say, come on to these people? No!

Jesus is dealing with you your new identity, not the identity of the world. Stop thinking of yourself as the identities of the world.

Now, there is another group of people that want to have their identities on doing better. Their identity is in religion. They want to do more and do better so they can be more pleasing to God. God didn’t say, to as many as received him he gave the right to become a Baptist, or Presbyterian, or Catholic, or Pentecostal, or Protestant, or Plymouth Brethren, or Seventh Day Adventist or what ever else you want to put down. No, He said:

John 1:12
¹² Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

A child of God is the only identity that God gives us. A child of God, saved, in Christ Jesus. Or in Adam, lost, a child of Satan. Satan has been effective at what he is doing, is by perverting the identity of a child of God. Satan wants to give us additional identities in order to take our focus off our true identity.

The canning example is a prime example of this. Salvation is when we are sealed in Christ Jesus.
