Classic Christianity – The Word of God at Work in You – Part 1 – 6-22-26
~ “And we continually thank God because, when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God, which is also now at work in you who believe.” 1 Thessalonians 2:13
~ Who are you going to place your Faith in? The truth of the word of God or Men? Many sit today, as though bumps on a log, and listen to the word of men, and they place their faith on what Man says instead of the Truth of the Word of God. How are you going to know if the things being taught are being taught as though it is the teaching of Man, which is likely polluted with lies and falsehoods, unless you read the actual Word of God for yourself. Because Man, no matter how good you think they are, have pushed lies, many times without even knowing it. They push the lies of the world, because while they may have one key part of scripture being taught properly, they are off in other areas of Scripture themselves, because they themselves trusted in the teaching from the word of Men, instead of God.
Folks, this is the most important thing to remember, to allow the Holy Spirit teach you Truth from the Word of God for yourself. Don’t trust in the teaching of the word of Men, because they could be lying to you, or sharing satan’s lies in ignornance. So stand on the firm foundation to begin with, Jesus, God Himself, the one who took away all your sins at the cross. That is the beginning point of Truth. And when you place Faith in Him, His Holy Spirit comes to live in you to teach you ALL Truth. Do not lean on your own understanding. Do not depend on your traditions. Do not depend on the teaching of the word of Men, but in everything go to God in prayer and seek understanding directly from Him on ALL matters, including the world in which we live. Because folks, deception is around every corner and is our faces everyday. Once you start seeing the deception and the lies of the world, it is because you begin to see with His eyes, and hear with His ears of the things truly going on in the world today. Nothing is as it seems to be.

And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, having done what, will I inherit eternal life?”
And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good, except God alone. Luke 18:18,19
Jesus is God in flesh: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1
—
Pray to God:
Do you really want to know the WHOLE Truth of what is going on today?
Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the world today and give me the wisdom to know the truth and identify the lies of the devil. Thank you God.”
~ Bob George emphasizes the importance of Jesus being the first in one’s life and the need to distinguish between the word of God and the word of men. He criticizes reliance on tradition and external sources like seminaries, arguing that true understanding comes from the Holy Spirit. Bob highlights that God chose the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, stressing humility and direct dependence on Christ. He argues against over-reliance on intellectualism and external aids like concordances, advocating for a personal, Spirit-led engagement with the Bible. Bob also discusses the concept of righteousness, holiness, and redemption as gifts from Christ, not human achievements.
“Now, guys, you can get the word of God, and you can get the word of men. When you are into a setting of tradition, you’re listening to the word of men. If you followed tradition through your life, you were listening to the word of men, not to the word of God. And yet many times, because we do not know the word of God, because we don’t study it, we lean on somebody else to tell us, and then it becomes the word of man, because you don’t know whether they’re telling you the truth or not. If I’m preaching to you right out of the word, and you don’t know the word yourself, or you don’t have a Bible that you’re looking at to see, is this the word of God? How do you know I’m telling you truth? And I’ve been telling people on the radio for 20 years, don’t listen to what I’m telling you. I could be lying out my teeth to you. You don’t have to be smart to be on radio. You don’t even have to be a Christian to be on radio or on television. There’s numerous people, I guarantee you, who don’t know the Lord from an apple tree, but have learned how to act and to mimic words. And so the issue is any old bush will do. God can use anybody, even lost people, but you do not listen to people because they have a position, or you don’t listen to people because they have a big church, or because they’re on radio or because they’re on television. Anything that is said to you by anybody, you need to check it out in the Word of God. You need to read the Word of God.” ~ Bob George

Bob George 0:29
Let’s turn to First Thessalonians, beginning in verse 13. As we have talked over these last few weeks in this book of Thessalonians, that Paul had gone to Thessalonica with Silas and with Timothy, and of course had brought the word of God to them, and then, as always happened in the New Testament times, but persecution followed immediately, and so you had that, that heart of an apostle that was saying that I want you to learn, I want you to grow, and then when you have to leave them, you’re wondering, are they really growing in grace, is this something that is taking place, and if they don’t know, it’s a longing in their heart to know, and so Paul is saying we also thank God continually, because when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as it actually is the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.
Now, guys, you can get the word of God, and you can get the word of men. You need to read the Word of God.
Now let me turn with me over to First Corinthians in chapter one, beginning in verse 26 We don’t have this up on the screen, so just follow along with me. First Corinthians chapter one, verse 26 Brothers, think of what you were when you were called, and guys, think back on that. What were you when you were called to Christ Jesus? Who were you, and what were you? Some people drug addicts, some people alcoholics, some people thieves, liars. I mean, we could go up and down the street, couldn’t we? But think about it for a moment, of what you were when you were called, and then he said not many of you were wise by human standards. How many of you were called when you were called into Christ Jesus, that you considered yourself wise, really wise by God’s standard? Or if not, and how about really influential? How many of you, when you’re called to Christ, were really highly influential people and highly intelligent people? Well, he says not many were of noble birth. Anyone in here of noble birth? But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. Now, isn’t it amazing in Christianity today. That we’re trying through our education system to get everyone intelligent when he said I’ll take the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and we begin to put emphasis on education, and as I said, we become students of the book, and we miss the author. I did that. I became a student, and I became a student of the book, and I studied the book, and I knew the book, and I had a lot of it memorized, but in so doing had lost contact with Jesus because I was a student of the book. There’s only one reason for ever picking this book up, and that’s to learn Jesus. That’s only one purpose for ever studying this book, and it’s to get to know Jesus, not the book, but Jesus.
And therefore, when you study, there’s study of words, and then there is a knowledge of meaning. Are we together on that? You can study and echo back to me what it says. So can a computer, right? But a computer doesn’t know what it means, and I got news for you. You don’t either, if you’re relying upon your knowledge of Greek, your knowledge of Hebrew, because again, if that was the case, how come everyone in Greece isn’t saved, and how come it was the Hebrews who nailed Jesus to a cross? So don’t come up with this stuff that you got to know, not Greek and knowledge and Hebrew, in order to understand the meaning of the word of God, because you can hardly find a Christian in Greece, and as I say, you can hardly find a Christian in Israel, and those people know the languages, they don’t have to go to cemetery, excuse me, seminary to learn it, they can learn it. They grew up learning it.
When I was over in Greece, I had to. I was amazed, laughing at professors over there and pastors in Greece who had come over to America to study in some of our seminar seminaries, who said that after about two weeks in the Greek classes, they just left because it was so, it was so amusing as to how little we knew about the actual language, and so we’ve started relying upon this. You tell people, if you want to be a pastor, you have to go to seminary. Well, I tell you, nothing wrong with that, but if you go to a Baptist seminary, what you going to learn? You got to learn Baptist theology. Going to go to a Methodist seminary, what are you going to learn? Methodist theology. You go over to the Episcopal seminary, what are you going to learn? Episcopal theology. Go to a Catholic seminary, what are you going to learn? Do all those people teach the same thing? Guys, do they do any of them teach hardly anything the same way? I mean, come on, guys, are we together? Do they, or do, until they? No, that’s why you got a Methodist and a Presbyterian and a Baptist, is because they teach something different. Now, if this book is the plumb line for truth, what in the world’s wrong with us? I’ll tell you what’s wrong with us. We’re content to sit in the pews and say, tell me what I’m supposed to believe, and so if I’m sitting in a Baptist pew, you tell me what I’m supposed to believe, and I’ll just believe it. And if you tell me enough and I hear enough, I’ll recite it back to you after a while. And if I’m in a Methodist church, why you just tell me what to believe, and I’ll believe that, and if I learn it enough to stay awake long enough during the service, why, maybe I’ll learn enough to repeat some of it back to you, and on and on and on.
Now, folks, he’s saying to us here in this Bible that you do not rely upon your intellect. In fact, it says don’t lean on your own understanding, but in all things acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths. Now, let’s read on. God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. Someone someone, as an early Christian, told me one day that I was going to have a great ministry with intellectuals. I said, “Really, how come you say that?” He said, “Because of this verse, he chose the foolish things of the world to confound the wise.” He chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. What do we do? We go out and say, oh man, if I get this football player saved. Oh man, if I could just get, you know, somebody who’s well known saved and get them on the circuit. Ooh, if I could get the President United States saved, or if I could get all the Congress saved, or if I, if I could get all the Senate saved. Ooh, man, would we just have perfectly harmony? I say, you have never been to a deacon meeting, brother. If you think that is going to bring unity. There’s only one thing that’s going to bring unity, and that’s truth. The problem is that if you don’t know what truth is, then any old truth will do, and that’s what the Bible is saying to her here. He didn’t take the intelligent people who are smarter than their own intelligence to confound the wise. He took the foolish things, the weak things. He chose lowly things of the world, and the despised things, the things that are not, to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before Him. It’s because of Him we’re told that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom. So, again, are you in Christ Jesus? Then, who is your wisdom? Christ Jesus, not you, Christ Jesus. So, where, if Christ is your wisdom, where do you go to access that wisdom? Christ Jesus, and where do you go to find him? In the word. That’s where you find truth that does what sets us free.
So, he chose the things that are not to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him, and it’s because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God, that is our righteousness. So, who is your righteousness? Who is your holiness? Who is your redemption? Okay, now let’s take that triplicate. How many of you, as an example, know that you’re redeemed in Christ? How many of you know you’re redeemed? Alright, then how many of you try to improve on that? Let’s see if I can improve on my redemption. Anybody try to do that? Well, how about your holiness, how many of you know that you’re holy at the sight of God? How many of you try to improve on that? Well, you see, if you’re trying to improve on your holiness, why don’t you try to improve on your redemption? And if you’re going to try to improve on your holiness, why don’t you try to improve on your righteousness? Whose righteousness do you and I stand in? His, not yours, but you see, we’ve developed these things, these traditions, where if you go to church twice on Sunday, that is when it’s not snowing, and you go to the prayer meeting, and you go to visitation, and you do all the things that the y’all come says to do, you’re righteous, and we begin to think of ourselves as righteous. You can do that with, with Amy and I went through with the short accounts with God routine. I actually remember, I hate to say this, confessions good for the soul, but it’s hard on the reputations, but of times that I’ve thought to myself, well, I’m really holy, I’ve got all my sins confessed. No, Scott over there, obviously he hadn’t got all his yet, but I do. Self-righteousness, you know what that does? Makes God sick at his stomach. That’s why we say, did you have your quiet time this morning? Why do you say that? Because you had yours. Oh, really? What time did you have it? Six. I had mine at five, and all of this stuff, quiet time. I will tell you something, folks. I’ve never had quiet time as long as I’ve been a Christian, since 1969 I’ve never had quiet time. I’ve had quiet time, but it isn’t structured.

Bob George 14:42
In my early days as a Christian, and I hate getting up early worse than anything in the world. Amy can verify that 4o’clock in the morning, these eyes wide open, get up out of bed, get up out of bed for two hours, three, study the word of God without stopping. That happened almost daily. Did I plan that? No. Did I go around, tell everybody about my quiet time? No. It was something God was doing, was putting on your heart to study the word of God. And we get into all these things, and these things that you do that become acts of righteousness. It’s just like the HEBREW used the law as a means of righteousness instead of a means of conviction, showing you you’re a sinner, which would prepare you for the cross, and we use all of these man-made things that we come up with. This is a love letter to us. This book is God’s love letter. Now if I had gotten a love letter from Amy when we were dating, I really don’t believe I would have sat there and said that’s a nice letter from Amy. Wonder what the Greek says? Maybe I need to structure this thing a little better. Wonder what the verbs are? It’s a love letter. It isn’t something to be dissected. It’s something to be internalized. It’s something to touch your heart that God loves you. I don’t have to sit around dissect that. I just have to read it and to accept it as Christ Jesus reveals truth to us.
So he says in here that he takes these things. It’s because of him that you’re in Christ Jesus. He is your righteousness. He is your holiness. How many of you are going to stand in front of God someday, in your own righteousness? We don’t have any. That’s why I’d had to be cleansed of all that I did have, unrighteousness. That’s happened at the cross. I was cleansed of unrighteousness, so that I could be clothed in His righteousness. And when you and I will someday go into the presence, we won’t go in these clothes, we’ll go clothed in His righteousness, or we will not go. We’ll be clothed in His holiness. We’ll be clothed in His redemption. Therefore, as it is written, let him boast, boast of the Lord.
Now He says, “When I came to you, brothers, I didn’t come with eloquence or superior wisdom.” I didn’t come with these highfalutin ideas and telling, letting everybody think how smart we are. I proclaim to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you, except Christ Jesus, and Him crucified. I’m not there to give out all kinds of information that’s going to impress you. I’m here to talk about Jesus. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. In other words, I came to you in humility. I didn’t come to you with an arrogant attitude. I came to you in humility. My message and my preaching was not with wise and persuasive words. Now, guys, how many times are people out trying to impress us with wise and impress and persuasive words, we impress ourselves, but we’re not pressing it, impressing anybody else. And a lot of times we’re kind of like William Buckley. How many of you remember William Buckley on, and I used to listen to him, and you know, at the time it was over, he’d say, I don’t have a clue what he said, but like the way he said it, I didn’t have a clue what he was talking about, he was way over my head, and I wonder if he knew what he was talking about, but that’s what the way it is, he says, I didn’t come to you with those kind of words, but I came to you with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith may not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power, not on man’s wisdom, but on the power of God. Now it says we, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.
None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they would have, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory. Now, here’s the key passages. It is written, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor mind has conceived of what God has prepared for those who love Him, but God has revealed it to us. How? By the Spirit. Now, guys. If you’re going to understand the meaning of the word of God, that means very simply that you’re going to have to depend upon the Spirit of God to reveal that to you. That means that I don’t sit down with human intellect and. And figure it out on my own, sit down, and I’ll get it all figured out. That’s why people try so hard to have systems to figure out the word of God, because they can’t figure it out, because they don’t depend on the Spirit of God to reveal it to you. So you can save yourself an awful lot of time by just trusting Jesus to reveal the meaning of the word of God to you, instead of trying to get involved in all of these techniques that people come up with. God will reveal the meaning of the word of God to you. How many of you found that true in your own life? If you are living in dependency upon Christ Jesus and His Holy Spirit that lives in you, the Holy Spirit that says I am here to guide you into how much truth? All truth. I’m here to take the things of the Lord Jesus and make them known unto you. That’s his job. Now, why do we deny that? Why do we act as if he did not say that? And if indeed Jesus did say that, which indeed he did. Then, why do I need to go to outside sources in order to try to find the meaning of the word of God?
I’m not saying this for everybody, because I think God deals with us individually. We’ve talked about that last week, that He doesn’t come to save bunches, and He doesn’t come to lead bunches, he came to lead you. It’s the same thing with Peter. Peter, what do you care if I allow John to live forever? I’m telling you to follow me. I’m not telling you to end this big group. I’m telling you to follow me. I have to live the Christian life myself, don’t I? I had to be born again by myself. I’m going to die by myself. And in the meantime, I want to let Jesus lead me individually. And so no eye has seen or ear has heard or mind has conceived for what God has prepared to love Him, but it’s got to be revealed by the Spirit.
I remember when I came to Christ in 1969 and I certainly was ministered to by the people that led me to Christ, but I remember one day a Bible student came by, and I guess they were making their money selling commentaries and that type of thing, and he had a concordance, an amplified concordance that you could buy for like $25 and then this huge thick concordance is, or excuse me, this huge thick book on how to explain everything to you, and you could get that for five, so the one called thin book costs 25 this one cost five, and so I said, well, I’d like to have that concordance, but I don’t want the commentary. Now, as a brand new Christian, and why God put that on my heart, I do not know. I’m not telling him to put it on your heart, but I said, I don’t want the concordance. He said, why? He said, only cost $5 I said, I don’t care what’s free, I don’t want it. Well, why? Well, because a concordance is something that is what man’s been, what he thinks that God is saying, and if, if God is telling him something that is truth, I think he can tell me. If I’m indwelt by the same God that He’s in dwelt with, and what I need to read His stuff for, let God give it to me direct. I never have like chewed up food from somebody else, and so no, I don’t. I don’t want that.
A commentary is a comment from Terry, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but guys, you can start relying on these things until your understanding of the word of God is what does the commentary say. Well, who revealed something to the author of the commentary, if he had anything to say? Who would have revealed it to him? Holy Spirit. What do they know? I need the Holy Spirit telling him, so he can tell me, or can the Holy Spirit tell me? If I trust him to tell me, I mean, does that make sense to you? If I had two children and I wanted to tell one of the kids something, I wouldn’t go to his brother and say, “Hey, tell your brother this,” I’d go to him, wouldn’t you? And so what happens to us is we start relying upon man’s wisdom instead of going to the scripture and saying what does this say, and God says that the Spirit searches all things. That’s a truth, guys. The Holy Spirit of God, who lives in you and me, searches all things, even the deep things of God. You want to know the deeper things of God, the Spirit will reveal it to you.
Who among men knows the thoughts of a man, except the man’s spirit within him? Is that true or not? Do I have a clue what you’re thinking right now? Only your spirit knows, and you can sit there and look and nod and not be hearing a word I’m saying. I don’t know, because no man knows the thoughts of another man except the man’s spirit within him. Now it says in the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God, except the Spirit of God. Now, guys, if you don’t keep reading, that’s a problem, because what that’s saying is no one knows what God’s thinking except His Spirit, and I’m saying I want to know what God’s thinking. So, how am I going to know what God’s thinking? Well, keep reading. We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. Now, what is it saying there? We haven’t received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God. The Holy Spirit of God lives in us. That didn’t come from the world. I was not born again of the Spirit by Mom and Dad. You and I were created, or born, excuse me, in the image of Adam, not in the image of God. In the fifth chapter of Genesis, it tells us that when God created Adam and Eve, but when Adam and Eve had Seth, Seth was born in the image of Adam. We were not created in the image of God. You were born in the image of Adam. Adam and Eve were created in the image of God. They didn’t come from Mom and Dad. They didn’t have one. They were created out of the heart of God. We were born out of fallen Adam, when you and I are born again, we’re born again of the what? Of the Spirit, and therefore, if any man be in Christ now, he’s a new what creation. Who created your new birth? God, absolutely, who created your physical birth? Mom and Dad. So you got two births, Mom and Dad, and now you’re a new creation whereby God restored in us what we had lost in Adam, that being the Spirit of God living in us.
