Classic Christianity – A Wife of Good Character – Part 2 – 9-08-26
~ Scripture frequently highlights the unified partnership between a man and a woman, particularly within marriage, depicting them as co-laborers in spiritual purpose, daily work, and life. Many times, we tend to focus on one or the other, instead of the team that we are called to be by God Himself.
Genesis 2:18, 24
“And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him… Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
- Highlights the creation design of woman as a complementary counterpart (ezer kenegdo) to partner with man, establishing the foundation of becoming “one flesh.”
Genesis 1:27–28
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion…”
- Shows the foundational mandate of stewardship and work over the earth given jointly to both male and female as a unified unit.
Ecclesiastes 4:9–12
“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow… And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
- While broadly addressing companionship, this principle applies centrally to marriage, emphasizing shared labor, mutual support in hardship, and strength found in unity under God.
Acts 18:2–3, 26
“And found a certain Ἰουδαῖος named Aquila… with his wife Priscilla… and because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers… And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.”
- A clear New Testament example of a husband and wife working together in both physical trade (tentmaking) and spiritual ministry (mentoring Apollos).
Romans 16:3
“Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus.”
- Reaffirms Priscilla and Aquila as a unified team actively serving alongside Paul in the Gospel.
Proverbs 31:10–12, 23
“The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life… Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.”
- Portrays a marriage where both spouses support one another’s callings, operating with total mutual trust to manage family, commerce, and civic life.
1 Peter 3:7
“Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.”
- Emphasizes spiritual equality and unity, explicitly identifying husband and wife as “heirs together” of God’s grace.
1 Corinthians 7:3–5
“Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.”
Speaks to mutual deference, shared responsibility, and practical oneness in the marital covenant.
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Revelation 21:1,2

Pray to God:
Do you really want to know the WHOLE Truth of what is going on today?
Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the world today and give me the wisdom to know the truth and identify the lies of the devil. Thank you God.”
~ Bob George discusses the true nature of God’s church, emphasizing that it is composed of individuals who have accepted Jesus Christ. He critiques the concept of denominations claiming to be the church and stresses that true belonging is a personal matter known by individuals and God. Bob then shifts to the characteristics of a “wife of noble character” as described in Proverbs, highlighting traits such as being a helpmeet, not a competitor, and bringing good to her husband. He underscores the importance of gratitude, hard work, and discernment in women, and concludes by praising the influence and value of mothers and wives in Christian households.
“Well, let’s pray together. Father, I pray that the women in this room will not forgive. their worth. We’re different in all ways, but when we unite our hearts to Christ Jesus, and we have the ability to Go to Him and to talk to Him and to be led by Him and guided by Him. There is nothing more exciting than a Christian home. I pray that in this land that we live, where divorce among Christians is as prevalent as it is with non-Christians. That people will begin to come to their senses and realize that families need to stick together where they can, for the sake of children. We’re raising children today who have been abandoned, and we’re paying the price for it. So, Father, we thank you for this day of celebration of Mother’s Day. We thank God for our own mothers; many of them are already gone to be with you, and we thank God for the influence that they had upon us. So we pray now that, as we go our way, that Your Holy Spirit will continue to work in our hearts and to guide us into Your paths of righteousness. We pray these things in Jesus’ name and for His sake. Amen. ~ Bob George

God’s church is where He’s the head, and you and I have been made into His body. That’s God’s church, the day that the Spirit of God comes to live within you, and then baptizes or places you into His body. That’s the church. This isn’t the church. You are the church. So how are you going to plant you? And yet we go and say, “I’m planting churches. Why don’t you say I’m going to go share Jesus? Because Jesus alone forms His church. He’s the only one that’s got a church that’s worth anything. In this assembly, I would hope that everyone in here is a part of Jesus Church, but I don’t know that you do. You know whether you’re a part of Christ Jesus Church or not. You know whether you belong to Christ or not. I don’t know. I don’t need to know, but you know, and God knows whether you’re a part of the church or not. Now you have denominations come along and say, “Oh, we’re the church. We, how do you know you’re the church? Well, because it’s our name, Church of Christ, Church of God. We’re the church. I say, boy, how foolish, how foolish you are, to not see that God’s church is made up of people, just you’s and me’s. He doesn’t need amazing people, but he does need people willing to listen to God, doesn’t he?
And so as we as we have the opportunity to sit back and open up the Word of God, and you say, well, what does He want from us? What does he want from you? And what does he want from me? And and what kind? If if I was to say, God, what kind of a of a woman? If if I was a woman, what kind of a woman do you want me to be? And I want to tell you something. He tells us. And and Proverbs. We haven’t been in proverbs a long time, but Proverbs tells us what kind of a woman and what kind of an attitude would make up this kind of a woman. Now I want to tell you today that you’re going to be shocked when you read through this. As a matter of fact, you might get hilariously laughing when you go through when you see what he says about Proverbs woman, but I want to tell you something. What has happened in this world today is we’ve gotten all kinds of man-made ideas, haven’t we, about what woman should be like and what man should be like. I mean, do you think that God intended for men to be out and to be macho and have a beer in one hand, cigarette in the other, and big old machos? You think that’s what God’s idea of a man is? Well, I mean, is that Jesus riding around my motorcycle, tailgate people, my truck? Is that what God said for man? I mean, I’m not saying motorcycles are bad. The guy we saw in Florida would think so. He crashed driving down the freeway like an idiot. But guys, want to tell you something. God wants men to be men, and you know what a man is? He’s gentle, and a man is considerate, and a man is supposed to be loving, and a man is supposed to be cooperative. And then there’s things for women.
Let’s take a look at these characteristics of a woman. A wife of noble character, Bible says, who can find? So obviously, if it’s saying that a wife of noble character who can find it, it means maybe that they’re not real easy to find. But it doesn’t negate the fact that this is what God calls a wife of noble character. She’s worth far more, it says, than rubies, and her husband has full confidence in her, and lacks nothing of value. A wife of noble character brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She’s there, in other words, to encourage her husband. A wife is not there to tear her husband down and to make him feel like an idiot or a fool. A wife is there to build her husband up and to make him feel like he’s worth something. How many of us do that? Or is our pride sometimes so great that what we really want to do is to get in competition?
You see, so many people look at marriage as a tennis match instead of a partner’s game in a tennis match. If you’re in a tennis match with your wife, you’re on the same side of the fence. You’re there to cooperate with each other, not to compete with one another. And when you’ve got an attitude of competition with your wife, you are not in God’s will. Period. Or you are in competition with your husband. You are not in God’s will. You’re not there to compete with one another. You’re there to serve one another. You’re there to build one another. And a wife of noble character, talked about in the scripture, is one that her husband has full confidence in her. It’s a wonderful thing to have a wife that you have full confidence in, and lacks nothing of value. But she brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. So again, she is a woman of encouragement. Do you know, gals, that you can tear your husband down to nothing? Do you know that you can reduce your husband to nothingness? You can be the most popular person on the face of the earth, but if your wife puts you down, you’re going to be down. There’s only one person that a man really wants to please: his wife. There’s only one person that he wants to hear a compliment from. His wife. Only one, and probably vice versa. And yet, so many times our pride or ego is such that I’m not going to build him up. I’m going to tear him down, and the Bible talks about that how God builds a marriage and a woman tears it down with her mouth. So we have to be careful, don’t we? Do you want to be a noble wife of noble character? Then quit tearing your husband down and build him up and encourage him. You’ll be amazing what your husband will do and accomplish when you start building him up instead of tearing him down.
She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. Now, what’s she doing that for? Well, she’s making things. She’s working without complaining. How many of us do that? You know, guys, in this day and age, you you stop to think what we have in the kitchen alone. I mean, you got microwaves for quick food. You got stoves. I’ll explain to some of you what that looks like. You know, it’s like the like like this guy’s 10th anniversary, and he said to his wife, “You know, what do you want to do? And she said, “Take me someplace I’ve never been. Said, “Good. Let’s go to the kitchen. And so, we we have to realize that there’s all kinds of things. There’s dishwashers. There’s there’s there’s all kinds of things that you didn’t used to have. Stop to think. Just back in most of our mom and dad’s days, they didn’t have dishwashers. They didn’t have laundry equipment. You remember those old deals that rolled? You used to put the laundry in, and and then when Amy’s days, they had to scrub them with a scrub. Remember that with with a scrub deal with your hands. Everything had to be done with your hands. Hang it up on clotheslines. You don’t even know what a clothesline is today. You think the phone company made a mistake? You don’t know what. But we have all these conveniences, and yet still people complain. Why? Well, we really are ungrateful, aren’t we? When you stop to think about it, we’re pretty ungrateful people. All of us. This is Mother’s Day, so you women are getting pretty good today, but Father’s Day is coming. She selects wool. She’s like the merchant ships bringing her food from afar. She feeds the family. You know, some people, if they ever got a cooked meal, they’d think it’s in the wrong house. One of the jobs of a mother is to prepare food for your kids and for your family. McDonald’s is okay, but I’m going to tell you, home cooked meal’s better, isn’t it? And yet, you find people today say, “No, I don’t have time to cook. I know kids that don’t even get meals. Got to find their own meals. Mothers who let kids grow up and could care less whether they got breakfast or morning. Go fix your own. That’s what’s going on today. That’s the kind of mentality that you see today that is permeating the world. Is this attitude. I’m too good to do this. I am above cooking a meal, and don’t ask me to do windows. I’m above this. Well, since when did we get above serving people and doing what God says is noble? When did our when did our heads get to the point of getting so far away from God that we say this is what God says is noble, and I say it’s junk? You see what I’m getting at? We’re not following what God says.
A woman of noble virtue provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls. She gets up while it’s still dark to provide food for her family. She considers a field and buys it. Out of her earnings, she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously. Her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable and her lamp does not go out at night. In other words, she’s continually thinking. And and folks, when you see women working over in different parts of the world, this is what you see. You see the women. If you go to Russia, you go down and you see the women out on the streets selling their merchants, selling their food, selling their goods, and they’re industrious. She opens her arms to the poor. She extends her hands to the needy, not sitting there just thinking about what I got and and what I got and what I got. You’re you’re you’re there to share with people. When it snows, she has no fear of her household, for all of them are clothed in scarlet. So they’re clothed. They’ve taken care of their family. She makes coverings for her bed. She decorates. Now I know some of you women are sitting there saying, “I am not doing too well in this first deal, but this decorating thing, I’m really into that. You’d say, “I told you I was a virtuous woman. She makes covering for a bed. She’s clothed in fine linen and purple. Her husband is respected at the city gates, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. She’s clothed with strength and dignity, and she can laugh at the days to come. She’s got a good sense of humor. She’s fun loving. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. I’ll tell you something. We guys have difficulty sometimes understanding the value of your wife or of a woman.

Bob George 14:10
A woman has a built-in, in my opinion, has a built-in sense of discernment that men do not have. Amy drives me crazy. She does. She drives me crazy because I’m very logical, and I’ve got everything down in in logical sequence. And so I come to the conclusions after this logic. She just comes out with feelings, and I say, “Honey, you can’t function on just feelings, but you know what? She’s right every time, and it drives me crazy because where’s the logic? It’s not there. It’s just this discernment, especially when it relates to people, and wives are very protective of their husbands. A good wife is protective of her husband, and she can spot when a husband is around the wrong person, especially if it’s a good-looking secretary. She has discernment. Now, a man, he just sits back and says, “Oh, come on, that’s crazy. Am I right or wrong? That just got nutty. You know, wife’s got a little psycho case going there. But I want to tell you something. You need to learn to start listening to your wife because nine times out of 10, I’m going to tell you they’re right on that discernment. God has given them a discernment. That’s why a wife’s responsibility as she’s looking out after her children. There’s a discernment that God gives her to look out after her children. Someone once wisely said, “If you’re sitting there in the living room or something, your kids outside, and some little voice says, ‘Go check your kids. Go check your kids, because that’s God telling you to do it. How many of you ever seen that happen in your life? Most of us. It’s called discernment. And so she speaks with wisdom. Now again, there’s a difference between wisdom and education, isn’t there? When you have wisdom, you have to get wisdom from where? From God. But if a woman is in Christ Jesus, and she is indwelt by wisdom. Bible tells us it’s because of Him, God, that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for you your wisdom. Then, if there’s wisdom there, then they need to be listened to. And you see, we guys don’t want to listen to women. Am I right or wrong? Diane says, “Amen, bro. That that’s a true thing that we don’t want to listen to somebody else. Why? Well, because I might have to admit that I’m wrong. I don’t know as an example who had you sitting over there today? Because you’re normally over here, and I feel like I ought to start preaching here, so you’ll be on the right side. That was you. See, maybe wisdom.
She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Do you know, guys, that idleness is the devil’s workshop? And many times, what we’re looking for is idleness. We’re looking for idle time and free time and all this type of thing. And the Bible tells us that that’s the devil’s workshop. And so she doesn’t eat of the bread of idleness. And you know what happens with all of this? He says her children arise and call her blessed, and her husband also, and he praises her. Many women do noble things. You know, turn that for me. Many women do noble things, but he’s talking to this woman. You surpass them all. Charm is deceptive. Beauty is fleeting. But a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Do you know guys and young people? One of these days you’re going to be looking for mates. You know beauty can fade. I mean, if beauty was the answer to successful marriage, what happened to ___ ______? She was like ___ ______. She never met a man she didn’t like. Beauty is skin deep, and it can fade, can’t it? But how many billions of dollars do we spend on plastic surgery to make her outward more beautiful? Quite frankly, to me, you look like you’re in a wind tunnel and pay no attention at all to what’s going on underneath the skin.
He says the charm. You can be charming. Listen, I know charming people that are the most deceptive people you want to see on the face of the earth. As a matter of fact, it tells you watch a flattering tongue. And when some, and I’m talking about a flattering tongue, you know when someone’s flattering you for a benefit. You can tell by looking at them, listen to them. That’s a contrary to somebody sincerely saying something nice to you, which we’re encouraged to do. But you can tell where it’s being said for an alternate reason. And so charm. You see a lot of charming people, and they’re fun, and they destroy you. Beauty is fleeting. It ain’t gonna last forever, is it? If you don’t go, you don’t believe that. Go back to your 50th high school reunion. You will notice that you cannot identify anybody. Time does money. Unbelievable things to us. I about had a heart attack when I went back to my very union. I couldn’t believe it. All those people had gotten old. Charm is deceptive, beauty is fleeting, but the woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
I want to tell you guys, and you know that, and you know this as families, that in a final analysis, when you have a person, and you have a wife, and you have a mother that loves Jesus and walks in the newness of life that is ours through Christ Jesus, there is only one thing that you can say, and that is praise God and honor her. I honor Amy. She knows the Lord. She loves the Lord. Doesn’t mean that she’s perfect, but it means that she’s a woman that I deeply admire, and I praise her. On top of that, she’s beautiful, and she’s charming sometimes. But in a final analysis, that’s very shallow. That’s very shallow because you don’t live with outward beauty. You live with what’s down under the skin. It’s what’s in that person that speaks to you. So it says, give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
And guys, I guess that that’s what this whole message is about: is we have the privilege of being around women, our mothers, our wives, and we as men need to be more aware of the fact that these creatures called women are wonderful, wonderful creations of God, and that we need to praise them and we need to lift them, just like they need to encourage us, we need to be encouraging them. Many times there’s insecurity. Many times there’s wonderment as to what they’re there for. I know many times women who have stayed at home and been mothers to their children can’t be anything any more blessed than that. Sometimes sit back and say, “What good am I? You know, you you hear people say, “Well, what do you do? I’m just a housewife. Well, if you or a man believes that she’s just a housewife, just trade place with her for a week and see what you say about that, they’re amazing creatures. You ladies are amazing creatures, and those of you that already raised your children, you know what I’m talking about. You’ve raised your children. They’re out of the house, and now it’s time for those remaining behind to rise up and call her blessed. And so I pray that today, as we celebrate this day, that you’ll have an opportunity to say to your mom or to your wife, “Thank you for being who you are. If you sat here today and some of these things have kind of pricked your conscience and said, “I could do a lot better than that. Take the heed from that. This is what God calls an honorable woman, and take heed from it, and ask God to change your heart to be more pliable, and to be more serving in your attitude toward your family and your your husband, because there’s nothing greater than a good mom. There’s nothing more influential than a good mom, and there’s nothing any more destructive than a bad one. I know people today that pay no attention at all to their children. Their children are just a pain to be around, and they’re going to raise children who are going to be raised with that type of an atmosphere that there’s a there’s a there’s a consequence to that. And so I just pray that we will take heed to what God says. If you’re a wife, a mother, be the best that God can cause that has called you to. Listen to God, and let Him direct your paths into the paths of righteousness. So happy Mother’s Day to you gals! If you don’t have children, happy hubby day. But you’re wonderful creatures of God, and we respect you and love you, and wish the best for each and every one of you.
Well, let’s pray together. Amen.
