Classic Christianity – Spirit Controlled Living – Part 3 – 10-14-26

Words, “word”, and “Word”: Un-Scrambling the Cleansing of the Vessel

📖 “And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” — 1 Corinthians 6:11
📖 “You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.” — John 15:3
📖 “…to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word…” — Ephesians 5:26

1. The Threefold Linguistic Distinction: Words, “word”, and “Word”

To understand how Scripture describes the cleansing and sealing of the believer, we must first un-scramble three distinct terms that English translation overlays frequently lump together:

  • 1. “Word” (Capitalized Singular — Ho Logos):
Refers exclusively to the living, uncreated Person of King Jesus Himself (John 1:1, 14; Revelation 19:13). Ho Logos in the singular is the eternal Son of God made flesh—the living Vine to whom every believer is organically fused (John 15:5).
  • 2. “word” (Lowercase Singular — Ton Logon / Rhēma):
Refers to the spoken declaration, decree, or Gospel message of truth communicated by God (John 15:3; Ephesians 5:26). It is the royal announcement of Calvary’s completed victory.
  • 3. “words” (Plural — Rhēmata / Logia / Graphai):
Refers to the individual spoken utterances, written oracles, and sacred manuscript texts (John 15:7; Romans 3:2).

When Jesus declares in John 15:3, “You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you,” He is pointing to His spoken declaration of finished truth. The spoken word (ton logon) flows directly from the living Word (Ho Logos), announcing the legal reality that the vessel has been declared clean!

2. The Clean Vessel to Begin With: Calvary’s Global Propitiation

Many believers remain trapped in a works-based, “vending machine” performance trap because they believe salvation is a process of begging God to “cleanse” a dirty jar over and over again. But covenant jurisprudence reveals a completely different reality:

  • Universal Propitiation (Hilasmos): At the cross of Calvary, Jesus acted as our true Goel (Kinsman-Redeemer), satisfying divine justice and paying the global sin-debt in full (2 Corinthians 5:19; 1 John 2:2). The gavel struck, liquidating the legal ledger (katallage) once and for all.
  • The Canning Jar Hardware Metaphor:
Think of human vessels as glass canning jars. At Calvary, Christ’s finished propitiation (hilasmos) scrubbed every clay jar clean on the shelf—wiping away the legal sin-debt of the world.
  • What Salvation Actually Is: Salvation is not “getting clean.” The vessel was already washed at the cross! Salvation occurs when a clean, unsealed vessel hears the spoken Word (rhēma), yields in Socratic agreement (homologeō), and receives the indwelling Spirit of Life (Zoē), who fills and permanently vacuum-seals the jar (1 Corinthians 6:17; Ephesians 1:13).

3. The Unbreakable Past-Tense Status of a Child of God

When Paul writes to the assemblies in Corinth and Ephesus, he never uses conditional, fragile, or uncertain present-tense language about their standing before God. He speaks in uncompromising past-tense absolutes:

  • 1 Corinthians 6:11: “And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified…”
Notice the past-tense finality! Paul does not say “you are being washed day by day if you perform well.” The legal identity of “sinner” was deleted, and the sealed identity of Saint was permanently established.
  • Ephesians 5:26: “…cleansing her by the washing with water through the word.”
Paul explicitly clarifies that the “water” is not a physical pool or ritualistic cleansing; it is the spoken Word (en rhēmati)—the Gospel proclamation that Christ gave Himself up for the Church and set her apart as holy, blameless, and without blemish.

Summary: Resting in the Finished Victory

  1. The Word (Ho Logos) is King Jesus Himself, who bought back creation at the cross of Calvary.
  2. The word (ton logon / rhēma) is the Gospel message that announces your vessel was washed clean by His blood.
  3. Your Response (Homologeō) is simply agreeing with the Judge’s verdict, receiving the Holy Spirit, and walking in the un-scrambled freedom of a permanently sealed Child of God!

Pray to God:

Do you really want to know the WHOLE Truth of what is going on today?

Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the world today and give me the wisdom to know the truth and identify the lies of the devil. Thank you God.”

~ In this lesson, Bob George explains what it means to live a Spirit-controlled life, teaching that being filled with the Spirit is not primarily about dramatic displays or spiritual gifts, but about being governed by God’s love. He says that while Christians cannot be possessed by demons, they can be influenced by ideas that pull them away from the truth, and he emphasizes the need to grasp the depth of Christ’s love. Drawing on Paul’s teaching about love, he argues that gifts such as speaking, teaching, encouragement, or giving are of little value without love, and that love should shape how believers treat one another. He also presents prayer as a response of gratitude: because God has already provided what believers need for life and godliness, he encourages giving thanks rather than approaching prayer mainly as a list of requests. In the same spirit, he distinguishes between planning one’s work and trying to control its results, urging people to work diligently while leaving outcomes in God’s hands. The lesson then turns to mutual submission, which Bob describes as listening, considering others’ perspectives, and resisting the assumption that one always knows best. Applying this to marriage, he says decisions should be discussed together, while husbands are called to take responsibility and love their wives as Christ loved the church. Finally, he interprets the biblical language of being washed and cleansed through the Word as an inward spiritual cleansing, not a reference to water baptism, and stresses that salvation rests on Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection—not on added requirements such as particular spiritual gifts, baptism, church membership, or human traditions..

“Now turn back to one Corinthians 6:11. Now he’s talking about as people lived in their lost condition, and he said, “But and that’s what some of you were, but you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ by the Spirit of our Lord, now the issue here: What does it mean that you were washed? What does it mean washing with water through the word, washing of of rebirth in Titus? Turn back to John 15:3, and I think we’ll get an explanation of that. See, people want to attach that to getting dunked in water has nothing to do. When you’re talking about being washed, you’re talking about being cleansed, not on the outside it says, but on the inside. Now in John 15, he tells us that he is the true vine, and the Father is the gardener, and he cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit, he prunes so it’ll be even more fruitful. Now look at verse three. What does it say? You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. So what does it mean when it says the washing of water through the Word in Ephesians, it means that you have already been washed, you have already been cleansed because of the Word of God that has been spoken to you and your response to it.

So don’t make something out of it that it doesn mean it’s not talking about dunking people in water, it’s talking about the fact that you have been cleansed by the blood of the lamb, you have been born again by the Word of God, and that all of this ties together. That if you have been the recipient of the word of God, then you have already been cleansed, and you are already clean because of the word that I’ve spoken to you. So, folks, there are many times that people will want to grab a hold of again tradition. Been brought up in legalistic type of backgrounds. Have placed great emphasis where God did not place the emphasis, and we have to realize that we hang on to our traditions. When you’re talking about salvation, you’re talking about being saved by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. You add anything to the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ in regard to salvation, and you’ve taken away from it. It is not salvation plus tongues. It’s not salvation plus baptism. It’s not salvation plus church membership. It’s salvation by Jesus, by His death, and His burial, and His resurrection. And so, every one of us who sit in this room today, who have come to Him, how? By faith, can sit here realizing we have already been cleansed by the Word of God.” ~ Bob George

Bob George 0:40
And so, I need power to understand something because the enemy is always there trying to snatch it away, isn’t he? The enemy is always there saying, “Oh, that’s probably not true. Always, without exception, and folks, that quite frankly is what demonic activity is. A demon can never possess a Christian, but demonic activity can influence a Christian. And so that’s all that is is demonic activity, and that’s just in the world. It doesn look. It doesn’t have horns. It’s just influence. It’s just information that’s constantly coming to you to take you away from the truth of Jesus. That’s all it is. And so He says you need power to grasp something, and that’s the height and depth and width. I better read this: wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. So he wants us to know the height and depth and width and breadth of the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, it’s beyond human understanding. How come? So that here’s the result. You might be filled. Here’s that word, filled, controlled, to the measure, with all of the fullness of God. Now, think about it. Would it be possible to be filled to the measure? I mean, that’s filled up with all of the fullness of God, and not be filled with the Spirit? Would that be possible? Well, of course not. Why? Well, because the Spirit and filled to the fullness of God are one of the same. The Spirit of God is God, just like the Son is God and the Father is God. So to be filled with the Spirit, what does that mean in Chapter five? It told you in chapter three, but if you don’t bother to read chapter three and all you do is memorize chapter five, why then it just means whatever you want it to mean. And so you see people down there getting knocked over and and and rolling around and giggling and laughing and all that, and everybody said, “Man, Pentecost all over again. That’s ridiculous. That’s not what it means. It means to be controlled by love. Now, what did Jesus say? That if you don’t have love, what? You don’t have anything. In the end, there’ll only be three things that remain: faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is what love. People come out and say, “Oh, that when you speak in tongues-that means you’re spirit-filled. Well, then how come he said you’re a noisy gong, spirit-filled noisy gong? That’s hard to say to somebody. You’ll spiritual field, spirit-filled noisy gong, has no bearing to it at all, nothing at all to it. That’s totally different than being controlled by love, and that’s what Paul said in Corinth. He said, “Let me show you a better way. You’re all hung up on these gifts. Let me show you a better way. If I could talk in the tongues of men and angels, but I don’t have love, I don’t have anything. What’s he trying to say? Look, you could think you’re gifted beyond measure, but if you don’t have love, what good’s it going to do? What good is it going to do you to have the gift of teaching if you don’t have love? What good is it going to do to have the gift of encouragement if you don’t have love? What good is it going to do to have the gift of giving if you don’t have love? And that’s what he’s saying. Don’t get hung up on the gifts. What I want you to do is learn to love, then let the gifts flow from a heart of love. If you don’t have love, forget your gifts. So he’s saying to us that what does it mean to be filled or controlled by the Spirit? It means to be controlled by the love of God. Now, what was it that controlled Paul? It said the love of God constrains me or controls me. What was it that controlled Jesus? The love of God, what is to control you and me? The love of God. So to be filled with the Spirit means to be controlled by love. Now, how many can say I am a control by love person? Man, you just look at me and just God’s love just oozes out of every place you can see it, every man of the day.

Now that’s what it means to be a spirit-filled Christian, spirit-controlled Christian would be someone controlled by love 24 hours a day. Anybody you know like that? I don’t either. The only person I know like that was who? Jesus. And why did the only thing that came out of Jesus was the fruit of the Spirit? Because that’s all it was in Him. And until we yield to Him, we will never produce, bear the fruit of love. So, what does it mean to be filled of the Spirit? Means to be controlled by love. Is that clear now? Okay.

Now let’s say what else it says. That speak to one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord. Always what? Giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Folks, what should the bulk of our prayer be? Our conversation to God. What should it be? Thank you. What else can you say? He’s done it all. I mean, I quite frankly don’t know what else to say to the Lord. Understanding God’s grace just ruined my prayer life. Because when you don’t, what are you doing? You’re always asking Him for something, aren’t you? Just always begging, asking, and 90% of what you’re asking is already giving you. But when you understand that you’ve already been given everything that you need for life and godliness. I don’t know of anything else to do except what he says to continually, always be given thanks to God for everything in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I don’t know how else to pray. People talk about formulas. I don’t have any formulas for prayer. All I know how. Do to the Lord is just continually say thank you, and basically thank you for putting up with me. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your mercy, your kindness. Thank you, thank you, thank you. In all things, give thanks, for this is what? The will of God concerning you in Christ Jesus. So we can talk about these long highfalutin prayers, but quite frankly, I don’t know how to pray long highfalutin prayers. All I know how to do is to say thank you. Oh, I can give God some ideas every now and then. Can’t you give Him some suggestions as to how I’d like Him to do something? But when I do that, I know how stupid that is, and He does too. But He knows sometimes I’m stupid, so we’re we’re on common ground, and we just have to we just have to understand that, don’t we? But again, look at the mindset, Lord if it’s Your will, I sure would like to see this come about. But I’m going to thank You one way or the other. People will get into planning. You say, “How do you plan? You say, “We don’t. Oh, we make some plans for function, but for results, no way. Why? Results are always in God’s hands. That’s why people. Well, we were talking to some builders and stuff the other day. One of the Bible studies that Bob Christopher teaches in the morning, and we were talking about that because a lot of times, you know, you you you when you’re planning, why you plan how much money you’re going to make, how many sales you’re going to make. Well, that’s results. Now you can do that if you want to, but man, if you hit it, you’re proud as punch, and if you miss it, you’re self condemning, and if you exceed it, you’re really proud. If you just hit it right on the head, why then you wish that you would have bid a little higher. So I mean, there’s all kinds. The Bible says, “Don’t compare yourself by yourself. If you do, you’re a fool, and that’s what happens. Nothing wrong with that, but what can you plan? You can plan function. What do I plan on doing tomorrow? If the Lord’s will, I’m going to get up and work as under the Lord. What are the results that going to be? Don’t have a clue. But I do know something: that if you get up and you work as under the Lord, and you give it your all, and if you’re not lazy, that you’re going to be blessed.

People will get into planning. You say, “How do you plan? You say, “We don’t. Oh, we make some plans for function, but for results, no way. Why? Results are always in God’s hands. That’s why people well, we were talking to some builders and stuff the other day. I do know that, and the best employees in the world ought to be Christians. It’s not always the case, but that ought to be. We ought to be the hardest working people on the face of the earth. There’s no need. There’s no room for laziness in the heart of a Christian. I can plan a conference. What are the results that going to be? Don’t know. How many people are going to be there? Don’t know. Don’t care. There’s six. We’ll have a ball teaching six. If you’re 600, that’ll be fine too. And that’s if you live your life that way. Is there any stress connected with that? No, there’s any stress connected with it. And God doesn want us living in stress, and so we can put goals. But what I’m saying, if we do, put hang on to them loosely, and plan and function, plan your function, but not the results. I’m going to go out to Hollywood, and I’m going to become a movie star. Well, you got a pretty dumb goal. You may go to Hollywood, but you may become something different than a movie star. So we have to realize that, folks. That we realize we’ve been given everything we need. Let God direct our steps, and we’ll spend our lives really saying thank you.

Now it says to learn to submit to one another, out of what? Reverence for Christ. Why should we submit to one another, out of reverence for Christ? Now, what does that mean? Listen to each other. Submit to one another means you could possibly, just possibly, have a better idea than me. Now I know that’s hard to think, but there is a slim possibility that you may know more about something than I do, and most of us function in that latter, don’t we? You know, I got my idea. Don’t confuse me with facts. My mind’s made up, and and I’m going to live that way, he says. “No, submit to each other, listen to one another, yield to one another, hear one another. Basically, if I was to put a word on that, it’s listen. You take time to listen to other people’s attitudes. Get rid of this dogmatic.” I know best, because we don’t. I mean, think about it, brother. The best thing to wear is red. Well, you wear red. You wear red. Few of you have red, but this would be one place if all of you had red on, especially me. look like Santa Claus up here. Red’s good for you. You like that color? That’s fine. Some people like green. Some people like other things. You can’t sit there and say, “Oh, this is it. We’re dogmatic. And so we have to leave room for expression, don’t we? Men and women have different needs altogether. They are different breeds, and we have to understand that. I say marriage is like the moon. Both of you are looking at it, but one’s looking at it from the dark, and the other’s from the light. But you’re looking at the same moon, and one’s saying it’s light. You say no. It’s dark. Men and women look at things differently, altogether, and that’s good. You can have unity in the midst of diversity, but you have to understand there is diversity. And sometimes I wonder what plane Amy’s on, and she’s wondering if I ever got off of this one. But seriously, we just look at things differently about things, don’t you? Now that’s why it says to submit to one another. Now we have a tendency to forget this one when we read the next ones of wives submit to your husbands, because you see, before submitting to the husband is submitting to one another.

Bob George 13:51
So, in other words, if you’re to submit to one another, then the submitting to the husband means that you have discussed the issues, you have thought through the issues. And now a decision has to be made, and God said, “I want the man to make it. Now He could have said, “I want the dog to make it. You’re not sitting there saying the man’s better than the woman. He’s saying someone has to take the leadership, and I’ve chosen the man to do that. But before you submit to your husband, as to the Lord over something, you need to be submitting to one another out of the reverence of Christ. Now, does that help in that particular passage? In other words, there’s discussion to take place. There’s understanding. We may be coming from something from totally different viewpoints, and there may be some good points, but there’s also negatives on both sides, and let’s discuss this long enough till we can come to some sort of an intelligent conclusion, and then he says, “Man, I want you to not only to make the decision, but I want you to be responsible for it. In other words, if it doesn’t work, don’t say, “See, it’s Your fault. So the buck stops there. Now there are a lot of wives that like their husbands to be the spiritual leaders, and you see that a lot. I’ve seen I can’t tell you through the years, my years of being a Christian, of wives that had husbands who weren Christians, and they man, they were spiritual, and they went their Bible studies and everything, and oh, they were just praying for my husband to be spiritual leader. And then the husband gets saved, and he becomes a fanatic, and he’s reading his Bible all the time. He’s going to Bible studies and going to church, and you have the wives coming in for counseling. I didn’t want him sincere. I just want him saved. You know. Don’t ever ask your husband to be the spiritual leader if you’re not willing to be the spiritual follower. If you’re not willing to be a follower, don’t ask him to be a leader. I’ve asked people sometimes. Okay, if your husband was a follower, was your spiritual leader? What would he be doing? What would he look like? What would he be doing? Going to church? He didn do that. Praying before meals, anybody can do that. You got to be a Christian. Do that. Think about that. What would you be doing? If I was going to say I want my wife to be spiritual. What would she be doing? Praying all the time. You know, if you were a spiritual leader, you know what you’d be doing. You’d be loving your wife as Christ loved the church. What you mean? You wouldn’t be leading in quiet time? Not necessarily. You wouldn be doing Bible studies every night at home, not necessarily, but you’d be loving your wife and you’d be loving your kids, as Christ loved His church. You want a testimony about being a child of God? Love one another. What did Jesus say? The world will know that you’re my disciples. How? By your church attendance, by your quiet time, by your Bible study. No, by your love one toward another. And so it says, submit to your husbands, for the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

Now, as the church submits to Christ, now who is now what is the church and who is the church? Who is it? The people, the ecclesia, the called out ones. So again, is the church a denomination? No, church is people. So, as a child of God, you see. Now, when we think the church is this group here, then then then I’m going to say I got to get you all submitting, and we’re going to have some submitting conferences coming up, and my responsibility get all of you doing something. It’s not all of you; it’s you. This is instruction not to the group. It’s instruction to you and me. I don’t want to read this and say, “Yeah, that’s what they ought to be doing. No, this is what I ought to be doing. This is speaking to me. It’s not speaking to the group. I can’t tell you how many pastors read these things. Say, “Oh, I got to get the church doing this. Say, “What about you? So it says Christ is the leader of the church. In other words, His body. Now, who’s the body? Only those who are in the body. Who’s the head? Jesus. How do you get placed in the body of Christ? The Spirit of God comes to live in you at spiritual birth. What does that do? Brings life to you, it says. Then the Spirit baptizes or places you into the body of Christ, and you become His body. So the very moment of spiritual birth, you are indwelt by the Spirit, and the Spirit then places you into His body. So the church, the true church, is not this gathering here. Although the church is here, born again people, but this is just where a group of born again people gather for teaching and singing fast songs.

Now, he is the savior of that church. Now, as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands and everything. Husbands love your wife. How? Well, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy-that’s the church referred to as her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to Himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or other blemish, but holy and blameless. Now, who made the church holy and blameless? Jesus. Hebrews 10:14. By that one offering, he made forever perfect in the sight of God all of you whom he made holy. You have been made holy and blameless in the sight of God, not by what you do, but by what He did. He did all of that.

When you’re talking about this washing with water through the word, a lot of people come up with all kinds of weird stuff on that. Turn with me to Titus three. What do we see here in chapter three, beginning in verse four? But when the kindness and love of God our Savior-now, if anyone ever wants to deny the deity of Christ, that’s a good passage for you. When he appeared, he saved us. When the kindness and the love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we have done, but because of his mercy. Why did God save us? Because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs, having the hope of eternal life.

Now turn back to one Corinthians 6:11.

By faith, can sit here realizing we have already been cleansed by the Word of God.

Well, let’s pray together. Father, we thank you for teaching us your truth, your love, your mercy, and your kindness that’s been extended to us. We thank you that we can trust you with that, and to live by faith, with a heart of thanksgiving, no longer working to accomplish, but realizing it’s all been accomplished. We do not do in order to earn; we have already received, and therefore we do. So I thank you now for what you’ve taught us, and pray that by your Holy Spirit, you’ll truly take the things of the Lord Jesus. Continue to open up our hearts to them this week, and to realize that in the final analysis, what you’re looking for is love. And when we refuse to walk in Love, we’re refusing to be controlled by your Spirit.
