What Does Repentance Mean in the Scriptures?

~ We repent of our unbelief in Jesus and believe in Him for salvation. When we change our mind (repent), the Holy Spirit gives us eternal life at that very moment in time.

“Repentance in the Bible, as we’ve kind of mentioned before, is a very strong word. We have watered it down like we do the word Christian and everything else would then have a meaning to it. And so repentance is the same way. It’s a very, very strong word. It is used in the Scriptures only as it relates to salvation, because you’re talking about a total change of identity, you’re not talking about I’m smoking but I’m going to repent and quit smoking, because you could start again. And that would mean you never repented. So repentance in the Scripture means a permanent change. And, and a permanent change. It’s like talking to a caterpillar and saying, I can make you into a butterfly, but realize what I’m saying to you that when that occurs, you will never be a worm again. So we’re not talking about that I’m gonna teach you how to act like a butterfly, I’m talking about that I’m gonna make it into a butterfly, you’re gonna be a brand new creation. And so repentance is a total change of mind. And so all of us are born into this world, The wages of sin is death. And Jesus said, The world’s sin is unbelief in Me [Jesus]. So we’re all born into this world bed spiritually and an unbeliever. And so what happens to us when we come to Christ is we change our mind. Now we can change, that change of mind could be all over the place, as far as your background. As an example, to the Hebrew, their hope was in Moses, their hope was in obedience to the law, their hope was in being a Hebrew for salvation. And changing your mind there was letting go of a ton of preconceived notions, it was letting go of a ton of Scripture, quite frankly, that was given to them by God. And now he’s saying a New Covenant has taken into a place. And so you were talking about a real change of mind letting go of a lot of stuff, a lot of baggage, in order to become a believer in Christ and Christ alone. Now, in our day and age, we can still have the same thing. There are denominations that you and I both can think of today, where there’s a ton of baggage. And when you’re talking about coming to Christ, you’re in some instances, even in Protestant or Catholic churches, you’re talking about the fact that you could even lose your inheritance as a son or a daughter, people are that strong in their denomination that you defect from this brother, and you’re no longer my son. And so it’s a total change of mine. So would you repent and change your mind that this is not truth, and this is, it is a total change of mine, and a total change of identity. Very hard. There are other people like myself, I didn’t believe in much of anything. And so I didn’t have a lot to change my mind about my change of mind was I just never heard that Jesus was my sufficiency. I didn’t know what I did believe. But I also didn’t know what to believe. And I also didn’t have much that I believed in, I still had to change my mind. But it wasn’t letting go of a lot of stuff, I wouldn’t hold on to anything, you see what I’m getting, but still a change of mine had to take place. So repentance is that’s what it means is to change your mind. And of course, in the early in the early church, and in the early chapters of acts again, where that was truly emphasized. That was talking to Hebrews who were absolutely steeped in Hebrewism so that repentance and change of mind had a lot of meaning to them. And I say even more so today than living in America, where pretty much everyone’s heard about Jesus, and at least you’ve had some exposure there. There of course, in those days, there was no exposure, he had just come on the scene. So changing your mind, I want to tell you a change in your mind in those early days, that was not an easy thing. You had to have a lot of evidence sticking in front of you. And of course, that’s what Christ came when he was here and his physical body, he provided all the evidence anyone would ever need to know that this truly was God on the earth.
