Call-In Classic Christianity Radio – Bob George P1123 (04-23-26)

What is The Work of The Ministry? To Believe in Jesus.

~ Then they inquired, “What must we do to perform the works of God?”

Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.” John 6:28,29

~ Works in the Bible are not what we typically think they are.

How many times have we heard that the Christian must do works to show they are saved? The subject of “works” as presented in the Bible is not what most people think they are. First off, a believer in Christ can not “produce” any good works in of themselves.

Now, let us talk about what good “works” really are as it relates to the Bible. The whole Christian world (that is all the religious folks), and even many of us that believe in total Grace have been brainwashed into thinking good works are something they are not. First off, Jesus explained what the “work” of God is and is a key foundational starting point. Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” (John 6:29) By the way, the word work here in John 6:29 of Scripture as defined in the Greek language is really like a job function (meaning: business or employment) here.

If we were to understand the context of the works ideas being taught by James, and let’s just say for example that the work would actually be belief [which should not be a novel idea] as presented by Jesus (see: John 6:29) and further talked about by Paul in his writings, then the idea would be that faith would express itself in Love and what Jesus did on the cross for the person that believes. Think of it this way, that a person that truely believes Jesus forgave them of their sins would ultimately come to the realization that there was no more sacrifice for sins required. Their sins have been completely forgiven on the cross. Would not this be the work of Love in their lives? Would not this work of Love also be manifest in sharing that Love with others? Obviously that work of Love is not the person doing the work, but the Holy Spirit doing the work in and through people. When we have a heartfelt Love for others (not wanting them to perish – just as God does not want that either), do we not have the same mind as God? In essence, did he not give us a new heart that is indwelt by the Holy Spirit to perform the work of Love to others? Is not God’s Love an active Love based to begin with because of his love for us, when Jesus was sacrificed on the cross for us? Is not his love flowing through believers as an active work of love today? Is not this the work of Love?

Furthermore, the book of James was actually written during a time of great Tribulation. Believers were being hunted down and killed for their faith in Jesus. And here were some people (claiming they were believers), saying they had Faith, yet they would not help those out in need. Why wouldn’t they? Because they were in fear for their own lives. They said they believed about who Jesus is, God in flesh, but they did not want to help out a fellow believer in Christ that was facing perscution and needed a place of hiding or to have some food given to them, yet because they too were afraid for their own lives they didn’t come and help those out in need. So how good a Faith was it, that they would not feed a brother in need? Could that type of faith save a brother from going hungry? That’s why two of the given examples of Faith was Rahab protecting the Israelite spies from being killed, and Abraham following through on what God told Him to do.

Rahab the Harlot hid the Israelite spies, helping them escape and even lying to the government officials of Jericho about where the spies went. Then we see the city was destroyed by God. No matter how you mix it, what Rahab did would not seem to be a “work” of righteousness from the standpoint of religionists and the world. Obviously Rahab believed God and she did the right thing as it pertains to God, but it would certainly have been the wrong thing from the standpoint of “obeying your government” or “don’t tell any lies” which by the way is a breaking of one of the Commandments of God too. Read the entire story of Rahab in the book of Joshua, chapter #2. Realize this, Rahab placed her life on the line for the servants of God.

Another example was of Abraham, who believed God when he was going to go through with sacrificing his only son when God asked him to. Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness that God would raise his one and only son from the dead. From the outside world, most would say, how awful God was to even suggest that. But, Abraham listened and obeyed God at every step of the way, even when God said “don’t kill your son,” Abraham obeyed God. Read this entire story of Abraham in Genesis, chapter #22.

So once you understand the True work of the ministry, then everything falls into place. Place Faith in Jesus, and He will lead you every step of the way to do the work of the ministry He has for you to do in your own life. Many times the work of Faith will NOT look like Faith to others. Because if the Holy Spirit is telling you to do something, you do it. If He is telling you NOT to do something, you also obey Him by Faith through the work of belief. Just like Abraham applied Faith at each step along the way.

Work of Ministry is to Believe in Jesus

Bob George discusses the relationship between faith and works, emphasizing that salvation is by faith, not works. He clarifies that James 2:14 does not negate this but rather indicates that true faith will produce fruit of God. Bob explains that discipline, as described in Hebrews 12:7-11, is not punishment but preparation for life, akin to a coach preparing athletes. He criticizes the use of fear tactics in evangelism, advocating for a focus on God’s love and life in Christ. George reassures callers about their salvation, stressing that true faith is dependent on Christ and that discipline is a positive, teaching experience.

“Well, you can’t, you can’t judge your theology John on a book of James, or one verse of scripture out of the book of James. You have to have your theology based upon the totality of the new covenant that was ushered in at the at the death of Christ, Jesus. And basically that is explained to us in detail, more by the apostle Paul than James. James is the first book that was written in the Scriptures, quite frankly, was under much scrutiny in regard to whether it even ought to be in a candidate or not, because of its teaching on those passages. Because you’re not saved by works, you’re saved by faith. And Paul comes and basically says that in boldness and explains it where Paul just or where James just kind of hit on it. But the issue is, salvation has nothing to do with works. What he’s saying here is, if indeed you are saved and you have a true faith in a true Jesus, you will be bearing the fruit of that, Jesus. It’s just like the vine and branch that if you are truly in Christ, Jesus, if you are truly in the vine and abiding in a vine, that vine has no option except to produce fruit in you, and you have no option except to bear that fruit. Has nothing to do with your salvation. It has to do with Are you going to abide in who you’re in now also you, as you and I both know John, we have people who are professors but not possessors. You have people that went out among us because they never were a part of us back in those days, it was, I don’t think you had that problem so much that we would have today, because people who were claiming to be believers back then could get killed. And Paul was beaten half to death most of his life. And the early apostles, all of them at one time or another, cost them their life, for their for what they said they believed in so there wasn’t any of that kind of popular popularity Christianity that we have today. Today, it’s kind of popular and social to do and but that was not the case back then. So I don’t think we today. It’s a little bit different than they had it back there. But the verse is not talking about salvation. Is just merely saying that true faith and a true Jesus is going to produce Jesus work, because that’s what he came to do, was to complete the work in us.” ~ Bob George

John 6:28,29

28 Therefore they said to Him, “What must we do, that we may be doing the works of God?”

29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you should believe in Him whom He has sent.”
