What About 1 John 1:9 ?

~ The core meaning of biblical confession is to agree with God, NOT to ask for forgiveness. This understanding is rooted in the Greek word for confession, homologeō, which literally means “to say the same thing as another” or “to assent.”

Key Tenets of Biblical Confession

Agreement, Not Petition: Confession is an act of agreeing with God about a situation, primarily acknowledging the reality of one’s sin and, more importantly, acknowledging the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross.
Total Forgiveness: Because of Christ’s sacrifice, forgiveness for all sins (past, present, and future) is a complete and established fact. Asking for forgiveness is viewed as undermining the sufficiency of that single, finished work on the cross. We are to thank Him for the forgiveness that was provided at the cross.
Interpretation of 1 John 1:9: The passage “If we confess our sins…” is not interpreted as a conditional if that must be met for God to grant forgiveness. Rather, based on the Greek grammatical structure, it speaks to whether or not a believer chooses to agree with the fact that God has already forgiven and cleansed them. The forgiveness is constant because God is faithful and just.
Logical and Scriptural Coherence: If confession as most understand it) were a prerequisite for forgiveness, it would logically require one to remember every single sin, which is impossible. Scripturally, this view contradicts the New Covenant promise that God “will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more” (Hebrews 10:17).
The Nature of Agreement: For a believer, true confession is agreeing with God that:
1. They have sinned.
2. Jesus paid the complete price for that sin.
3. They are completely forgiven and righteous in Christ.

~ 1 Corinthians 5:18-21

18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s trespasses (Sins) against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

20 Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made Him who knew no sin to be sinb on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

Bob George discusses the unpardonable sin, emphasizing that it is the rejection of Christ’s finished work, not specific sins. He clarifies that water baptism is a visual aid of being saved, not a requirement for salvation, and that ONLY the baptism of the Holy Spirit saves. Bob addresses the misconception that babies go to hell, asserting that a loving God would not condemn innocent children. He also explains the significance of the crucifixion occurring on Thursday, fulfilling the prophecy of three days and three nights.

“Well, it’s to an unbeliever. They’re not even a question about that. We’ve dragged it over into the believers passage, but it’s not a believer’s passage, it’s an unbelievers passage. It’s dealing with people who claimed that they did not have a sin nature. If we claim that we don’t have a sin nature or sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. How could that passage be to a believer when Jesus is the truth and he says he’s not in you. So it is a belief. It is a lost person’s passage, telling them that if you’re claiming to be without sin, you deceive yourself, the truth is not in you. And the literal translation is, I do not know whether you people doing this are ever going to come to your senses or not, but if you do at any time tomorrow, the next day, whenever it might be, he is faithful and just to not forgive but have forgiven. That’s an heiress tense, that’s a past act with continual effect. He is faithful and just to have forgiven your sins and to have cleansed you of all unrighteousness.” – Bob George
