Classic Christianity – Permissible or Beneficial Part 1 – 8-24-26
~ Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who submit to or perform homosexual acts, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Paul explains here by giving some of the examples of lost people, evil people, people without the Spirit of God living in them. And even look at the details, he says, “some of you were.” In essence Paul is giving some descriptions of some of the lost people that they once were before they came to Christ Jesus. There could be lots lots more to the descriptions of an evil person. What he does it here to make a big point. Because we were in the past these types of things as being a sinner, once we receive Jesus we are no longer considered to be any of those things. We are saints if we are in Christ Jesus. Once the Holy Spirit comes to indwell you, you will never be an evil person in the sight of God ever again. Because you were filled with His righteousness, His Holyinesss, and His very Life is in you. So how in the world could God the Father look at Christ in you and ever see a wicked person? It’s an impossiblity. For we were washed, we were sanctified, and we were justified in the name of Jesus, by the Holy Spirit coming to live inside of us. Now that should make us jump for joy and thank God that is the case.
But there are many that use these verses of scripture in the exact opposite way they are written. They invert the meaning to be, that to be a saved person you have to be perfect on your own. They will hammer this down people into law keeping. They will not take into account the context of things, nor will they even consider the final statement written right there. It’s as though they ignore that key piece and are blind to it, which indeed they are. For they themselves are an evil doer. They idolize themselves. They think they can stand in their own righteousness before God, and so they stand in pride of what they are doing for God.
Don’t listen to those types of people, because they are hammering the law as if Jesus never went to the cross in the first place. They have no idea of the True Goel Kinsman-Redeemer that Jesus is, and how He took away the sins of the world. They even deny the cross themselves. They give lip service to the actual words of God and to their true meanings. They would much rather place their faith in themselves, which is a form of idolatry by the way, and mix law and grace, which is a form of adultery by the way, rather than placing trust in what Jesus did at the cross for them.

“Remember, guys, what we’ve talked about that the sins of the world, plural, were all placed on Jesus Christ at the cross years ago. Do we do we remember that? All of them. No one will ever go to hell because of his sins. Only the sin singular of the rejection of the work of Christ Jesus. That is what is called the unpardonable sin. That is what is called blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. It is denying the testimony of the one alone who is leading people to Christ today. That’s the Holy Spirit. The testimony of the Holy Spirit concerning Jesus. It’s the denial that I don’t need your forgiveness, Lord. I do not need your resurrected life, Lord. I have my own life, and I have my own way of keeping forgiveness. I don’t need you, called the wicked. Now he says, “Don’t be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexual offenders, thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor swindlers. will inherit the kingdom of God. Why? Because they’re wicked. Now, are you not going to inherit the kingdom of God because you do these things, or are you not going to inherit the kingdom of God because you’re wicked? You’re lost, and because you’re lost, the way you tell you’re lost is you’re doing these things, and if you’re not doing them, you’re thinking them. So people will use that and say, “See there, see there, see there. You can lose your salvation. No, you can’t lose your salvation. You never had salvation. You’re called wicked. You don’t call saved wicked people, and that’s what some of you, what? Were you were wicked. Now you’re made holy. It’s identity. Who are you? Are you by God’s definition called wicked? Are you by God’s definition called holy? He said, “Look at this. You were washed. You were what? Sanctified. You were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our Lord. Now, folks, you will know notice there that it doesn’t say you are progressively being washed, you are progressively sanctified, and you are progressively justified. Because if you’re going to say one is progressive justification, then you’re going to have to or sanctification, then you’re going to have to say there’s progressive justification and progressive washingness. We people teach progressive sanctification. You are getting better and better and better every day. I said earlier this Bible was written to me. If that’s true, it ain’t written to me. Well, let’s open up our Scripture to First Corinthians. Guys. We’re going to deal a little bit today with attitudes toward the Christian life, because we have so many different stories that we hear in our churches, and and in these passages, we’re we’re going to see how God perceives sin. We have been told that God can’t look on sin, and I say if He can’t, then there anyway knows anything that’s going on down here. That God turns His back. That if you sin, God’s going to get you. Now, and all of those things have we not heard all that until we put people under total fear of sin, even to the point of when you’re taking the Lord’s Supper, that if you don’t have all of your sins confessed, you will eat and drink damnation upon yourself. Now, if you believe that, you’d be petrified, but you may think, well, maybe not total damnation, but just a little bit. But there’s always punishment connected with sin, and it’s promoted by our churches and by the pastors in our churches. They say, “Well, why do they do that? Well, that’s because that’s what they’ve been taught. And unfortunately, guys, what we have a tendency to do is whatever we have been taught or told, we just apply it, internalize it, and then pass it on, never thinking, is this really true?
I think because we have such a great example of that with with Richard and Lois, and we appreciate so much what God has done in their lives, but there were people that had been taught a theology, and until they came to the point of saying, “Hold on a minute, is this really true? Can this be true? Because something’s not working, and when something is not working, guys, you know it isn’t working unless you’re just so blasé that you don’t care that’s not working, but people with sincere hearts know when something is working and when it isn’t working, and they had to say something is not working, and someplace down the line, I believe whether you realize it’s scripture or what, but you come to the realization of what was told to us in the Scripture that that truth sets you free, and you come to the understanding: if truth sets you free, what is it that keeps me in bondage? It has to be error, and and and so it is not a complicated issue. You don’t have to go to a psychiatrist to figure out why you’re all screwed up. You have error in your head. That’s why they call them airheads. You have error in your head. Very simple. Jesus said, “Truth sets you free. That means that error causes you to be in bondage. Why are we messed up? Because we do not know truth, and so people, like many of us and like Richard, they had to say, “Maybe I need just maybe to go back to the Bible and see what the Bible has to say, and that’s exactly what they did, and they began studying, and they began allowing the Spirit of God to take over in their lives and to teach them the meaning of this Word of God, and pretty soon they realize I’m in the wrong place. I’ve been taught error. You’re not. The issue is you say, “Well, those nasty people. No, you had a Bible. That’s like me. I had a Bible. I’d say, why didn’t the church teach them? It’s like the Lord said, “Bob, you had Bible. Yeah, I know, Lord, but I never opened it. I know that’s why you didn’t know anything. But again, you start studying these scriptures, and you start studying them not with a perspective now, this is what my denomination told me, or this is not what so and so told me, or this is not what ______ ______ said, or this is not what ______ ________ said, or Bob George, or somebody else. So that’s what I believe. So so let’s verify their message. But Lord Jesus, I don’t care what anyone else said. You and I have a personal relationship with each other. You are talking to me. This book was written to me, not to us and to me. And if it’s written to me, then he has a message for me.
And Lord, you gave me your Spirit to live in me for the purpose of leading me into how much truth? All truth, and if that is true, and it is true, then you’ve given me the capability if I rely upon you, to understand the meaning of this book, I don’t have to study Greek. If if if knowledge of Greek was the issue. Every Greek would be a Christian. You can hardly find one over there. It’s not understanding Hebrew. It’s not going to seminary. I don’t care what your educational background is or isn’t. If you have the Spirit of God living in you, you have been given everything that you need for life and godliness, and that means I’ve been given the ability to understand the meaning of this wonderful book called the Bible.
Now, so we look at this, and we come to an understanding, as the Scripture says. So I’m going to go back to chapter six, and beginning in verse nine, do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Now he describes there who will not inherit the kingdom of God. What does he call them? The wicked. He could call them the lost, couldn’t he? Same same thing. The wicked, the lost people who have no interest in the things of God, people who have come to the conclusion that I do not need, just like Adam and Eve did, I do not need God to tell me right from wrong and good from evil. I can determine it on my own, and the Spirit of God departed from them, and you and I are born without the Spirit of God living in us, totally on our own. And so they’re identified as the wicked, and it just says wicked aren’t going to go to hell.

But you see, folks, what that what that teaching is saying is, if you just keep at it, brother, you’ll get yourself so holy that you won’t need Jesus at all. Just think how lucky you’ll be, how good you’ll be. And I can remember in my early Christian experience of getting up and speaking and saying to people, you know, I don’t sin as much as I used to, and by the grace of God, next year I won’t be sin as much am today. God’s working on me. Well, folks, it doesn’t make any difference whether you’re improving. James said, if you violate one of them, you violate all of them. And I got news for us: we’re not getting better. We’re just getting more information about Jesus. We’re just getting more information about His grace and His mercy and His kindness and His patience with people like you and me. I don’t know about you, but there isn’t one thing in my being that says, “Bob, you’re just getting better. Amy said, “Amen. No, my friends, we just and and again, if you’re getting better, just how much better do you have to be before you’re just going to be perfect? But you know, God made us complete. God made me holy, and again, guys, we get this idea of sanctification as I’m getting more sanctified, more sanctified. No, you’re not. You were set apart. God set you apart. You didn’t set yourself apart. You didn’t sit down and say, “Oh, now I’m going to be following Jesus on my own. God came and got you, didn’t He? And you responded to this marvelous message of God’s love and grace. And when you, as an act of faith, were able to say, “Lord Jesus, you’re right. I I knew I was a sinner, and I knew I needed forgiveness. And you said you took away my sins at the cross, and I say thank you, and I’m going to thank you for the rest of my life. And you gave me life that I didn’t have, and I’m going to thank you for that life for the rest of my life. Now that’s what he’s trying to teach us here, and that’s why he’s able to say, “Do you see in this? Oh, you dirty, old, rotten Christians! You need to shape up. You need to quit sinning. Do you know, guys, that the goal of the Christian life is not to stop sinning; it’s to start trusting. And we have reversed that till the goal of the Christian life is trying to get y’all to quit sinning. Lots of luck. I’ll start teaching you how to quit sinning when I’ve ever learned how.

Why do you think? And look at these attitudes, folks. Look at the difference in engineer your perspective of sitting back, living in fear as a born again believer now, living in fear of unconfessed sin in your life, of sins that you may have committed, that you’re going to get zapped, in comparison to everything’s permissible for me, but not everything’s beneficial. Do you see the difference, guys, between the condemnation? Man, I remember a teacher that I had down at First Baptist. She could put her finger around poles, looking at you, pointing those fingers at you. People were sitting there dodging because everything was guilt and guilt and guilt, and you better not do that. God’s gonna get you. Gonna get you. Gonna lose your business, your hair. Do you see the difference, guys, in the way you live? Living either in fear of God or living in peace with God. Everything He says is permissible for me. Now you see, with all of this, guys, we’ve been all of this comes into this is what you were now, this is what you are.
Turn with me for a minute back to Colossians three, and look at what He’s saying here. Since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature. We have an earthly nature, and we have a heavenly nature. We have a new nature, and we have an earthly nature. He says, therefore, put to death what belongs-the things that belong to this earthly nature. He doesn’t say you don’t have an earthly nature anymore. He just says put behind, put to death the things that belong to that earthly nature, the things that are associated with this earthly nature, such as we just mentioned. Sexual immorality is going to repeat this, impurity, lust. All of these are a part of your earthly nature. Nothing unusual about it at all. Now to sit there and saying, “Ooh, I didn’t know he had that. You got it too. Evil desires, greed, which is idolatry, he says. Greed, a greedy person, is an idolater. That’s what it says. What do you mean, idolater? You’re worshiping money, or you’re worshiping things. You’re worshiping your big house, your swimming pool, your cars, your money, your bank account, and that means you’re an idolater. Now, if you’re born again, don’t sit there with “Oh, woe is me, because that’s been forgiven. It’s not profitable to do. You can do it, but when you’re doing it, you realize this is ridiculous. I’m going to leave all this stuff behind, and that’s what God wants us to do: is start thinking logically. The reason you have some of the thinking going on that is going on today, folks, is because people refuse to think logically, and you know what a refusal of logical thinking is? There are no absolutes, and if you don’t have an absolute in your life, you’re not going to think with logic, because logic tells you there is an absolute in this world, and his name is Jesus Christ. But if I have no reverence for this Jesus Christ, who is the absolute in my life, then there are no absolutes. If I can’t believe Him who is the absolute, then I don’t have any absolutes, and everything’s relative. And that’s that liberal type mindset. Oh well, yes, yeah, yes, yeah. The sky you say is blue, but it could be green. It may be a little shade or that kind of thing. There are no absolutes. There’s no absolute sin. Oh no! It’s just a alternative lifestyle, or you’re just getting your needs met. No absolutes, folks. These things are absolute truth, not an ounce of error in what we’re reading here. Not an ounce. It’s absolutely truth, and so he says, “Put to death these things, because of these things the wrath of God is coming. You used to know again what’s he talking about there? God’s going to come and zap everybody?
Jesus has already paid the price for sins, but he says there’s going to be a judgment day as to who is in Christ and who is out of Christ, and who is out of Christ is the wrath of God. What is the wrath of God? The wages of sin is what? Death. Spiritual death is the wrath of God, and that death is going to remain upon anyone who has never chosen life. We’ve chosen other things. We’ve put priorities on other things. It’s so easy today, especially with you. They got priorities. I’d rather go out and party than fellowship with believers, I’d rather stay up till 5o’clock in the morning so I don’t have to go to church. I’d rather go out and drink with the boys than to live a decent life. I’d rather go out and chase girls than to live a life of purity. There is no appreciation for what God says is truth. That’s the root of it. I don’t have any appreciation for it.
And so He’s saying you used to walk in these ways, in a life that you once lived. So He’s saying this is the life that you were living that caused you to be so miserable that you came to Jesus, and now that you’re in Jesus, you’re going right back to living the life that made you so miserable that you got saved to begin with. You once lived this way, but you must now rid yourself. In other words, you’re not talking about people who have come to Jesus and all of a sudden everything’s doing perfect. You’re talking about people who’ve come to Jesus, who’ve gone back into some of the habits that I said caused you to be so darn miserable that you became a Christian to begin with. He said, “What good did it do for you then? None. Then how much good do you think it’s going to do you now? Rid yourself of all of these things, such as anger, rage. You ever get angry, rage at people, just get some mad you can’t even see straight? He said, “That isn’t the life of a Christian. That’s the way you used to be.
I see people sometimes. When I think about how dumb you are as a non-Christian, I say, “Not you, me. And I remember coming home. Oh, man! I had this customer, and he started giving me a hard time, and I just chewed him out, and I just got after him, and I just made Minspeed out of here. Just look how good I am. I thought, you dumb idiot. I mean, that’s the way I thought as a lost person. Just proud of the fact that I got mad and enraged at somebody and chewed somebody out on the freeway, tried chase them down in the car. Dumb. He said, “You’re a child of God. Don’t think that way anymore. Malice, get back at people. Slander, like to slander people, like to find out some good news on them. Amy had a friend that her famous saying when got on the phone. You got that juicy gossip? What an idiot! Juicy gossip, just love it. Got anything on somebody? Filthy language. Well, we can get engaged in that from your lips.
Do not lie to each other. It deals with lying. It’s not of God. A liar is not of God. There’s no pride or proud in being a liar. Some people are proudful of that. That I conned this person over here. That’s why you have people in jail today of conning people out of millions of dollars. What did they do? Well, they lied to people, and with an honest look on their face, it looked like the angelic angels have just fallen upon them. They’re good, good liars. That’s why they become a lawyer. Excuse me, I didn’t mean that. I’m just kidding. Just kidding. They’re good liars. Look good. Look like nice, honest people, but they’re liars. And God says to cut it out. Don’t lie to each other. Why? Because you’ve taken off your old self with its practices, you’re not the same old guy. You’re not this wicked individual. You’re a child of God. So quit lying, since you’ve taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self.
Take off the old, put on the new, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. So there is no Greek or HEBREW, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, scathing, slave or free, but Christ is all and is unall. This idea that part of this Bible is written to the HEBREWS and part is written to the Gentiles. Now I know some of you like me don’t even know that exists, but it does. There’s more theology out there than you can shake a stick at, and I say if there’s something written. To the Gentiles, the HEBREWS. How come it says in Christ there is no HEBREW or Gentile, slave or free? Then that means there isn’t any gospel. Nonsensical theological issues. People who have grown so intelligent that they’ve lost their faith, forgotten what Jesus said. That just as Eve was deceived by the cunning of satan, that I fear that you have fallen away from the simplicity that is found in Christ. He’s not complicated. I came to die for you because you’re wicked and you’re a sinner. It’s not complicated. There was no way for you and me to obtain salvation on your own. God knows you’ve tried, and you can’t do it. So I came in your place, and I stood in your stead, and I stood in between you and the wrath of God, and said, “Father, I will take it for them, and I stood at a cross, and was beaten as no man, and punished as no man, and ultimately nailed to a wooden cross, and died, so that you could go free. Nothing complicated about that. On the third day, I was raised from the dead, so that that life that raised me from the dead can raise you from your state of spiritual death. You realize the consequence of sin, death. Erwin isn’t coming back. I’m never going to see his smile again, or hear his voice, or to hug him and to tell him I love him as a brother in Christ, isn’t here, not here. Death gone. When you were dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive With Christ, and forgave all of your sins. That’s the only thing you can say, isn’t it, Helen?
