Stand in the Righteousness of Jesus Himself, Not Your Own Self-Righteousness

~ God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21

~ As soon as a person places Faith in Jesus, God in flesh, to have taken away ALL their sins at the cross, we become the righteousness of God. Why? Because when God looks at us, He sees His own perfection. We are made perfect in the sight of God, not by anything we do or don’t do, but by His Spirit coming to live within us, and He makes us a new creation in Christ Jesus. That old me is gone forever. The old me is dead. That old me is never coming back ever again. That old me, was me without the Spirit of God living in me. But the New me, is Him having merged with my own spirit to make me righteous before God Himself. And until we see that we have been made perfect in His sight, we will be constantly trying to clean up our own selves. We need to see ourselves as God sees us. This is key to learning what living the Christian life is all about.

The transition from striving to resting is the most profound shift in a believer’s walk. When we grasp the reality of 2 Corinthians 5:21, we step out of the exhausting cycle of behavioral modification and into the freedom of the Great Exchange. We traded in our self-righteousness, and received His Righteousness when we exercised Fiath in Him. Jesus did not simply wipe the slate clean only to hand us back the chalk and expect us to keep it that way. He took our utter spiritual bankruptcy and permanently credited His infinite righteousness to our account.

The apostle Paul warned heavily against the trap of returning to self-effort. In his letters, he challenged believers who started their journey by the Spirit but were suddenly trying to perfect themselves by the flesh. This is the exact pitfall of trying to “clean up our own selves.” When we attempt to earn or maintain our standing before God through works, we are subtly declaring that the cross was insufficient. We forget that the old self was not merely wounded or put on probation; it was entirely crucified with Christ. The life we now live in the flesh, we live by faith in the Son of God, meaning the engine of our daily life is no longer our own willpower, but Christ living through us.

Understanding our new creation identity changes the root of our actions. Under self-righteousness, obedience is driven by fear, guilt, or the desire to earn favor. It is a burdensome, heavy yoke. But when we stand securely in the righteousness of Jesus, obedience becomes the natural, joyful fruit of the Spirit within us. A healthy tree does not strain and struggle to produce fruit; it simply bears fruit because of its nature. Because your spirit is fully merged with His Spirit, your core nature is now perfectly aligned with God’s perfection.

We see this finality confirmed in the truth that by a single offering, He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. Your perfection in the sight of God is a completed, past-tense event with eternal impact. The accuser’s primary tactic is to obscure this truth, pointing out daily flaws to drag you back under a mindset of condemnation. The defense against this is never to argue for your own goodness, but to point directly to the perfection of Jesus.

Living the Christian life is not about trying to become something you are not; it is about agreeing with God about who He has already made you to be. It is the daily renewing of the mind to catch up to the reality of your reborn spirit.

Bob explains that Jesus’ command to “be perfect” is meant to reveal our inability to achieve righteousness on our own and to drive us to rely completely on Christ’s finished work for salvation. He addresses how believers should handle guilt and failure after sinning, emphasizing faith in what God has already accomplished rather than trying to regain fellowship by self-effort. He clarifies James 2 by distinguishing salvation by faith alone from the post-salvation works that Christ produces through believers, and he explains that while Christians still experience anxiety and intrusive thoughts because of the flesh, they have the indwelling “mind of Christ” and can learn to reject lies and walk in God’s truth.

“Yeah, Janice. The anything Jesus said in and before the cross was to bury us. It was to show us you can’t to say to be perfect, and you say I can’t be perfect. And Jesus is saying now you got it, Janice. Now you’re ready for the cross and for the resurrection. If until you see yourself that you cannot be what I need you to be in order to go into heaven, and only I can provide that for you, you’re not ready for salvation, and that’s why Hebrews 10:14 says, “By that one offering He made for ever perfect in the sight of God, all of you who are the holy ones. So He had to make you complete. You cannot make yourself complete, and so it’s you know it’s it’s like saying don’t lust, or it’s the same as adultery. And then James says, if you’ve committed the least of these my commandments, if you’ve kept the entire commandments and yet violated in one point you’ve broken all of them. What? How are we going to stand before God? And the issue is, you can’t in your own strength or in your own righteousness. We don’t have any. You see, Janice, the purpose of Christ here on this earth-He was headed to a cross and to a resurrection in order to forgive man’s sins and to restore man to life, what we had lost in Adam, the Spirit of God living in us, that was His reason for being here on this earth. Now, in order for us who are dumb as mules to to catch the fact that we need salvation, Jesus had to come in the flesh and take upon himself our flesh and blood, and in so doing show us what pure righteousness is in him, and in so doing showing us that we have no righteousness. There’s none righteous, no, not one. Now I’m prepared for salvation. If I keep thinking that I have some good in me, that I am righteous in and of my own self, what do I need Jesus for? And so that’s why he made these statements. He said the only thing it’ll do is perfection. You’re not going to go into the presence of God unless you’re perfect. And you say, How perfect, Lord? Is perfect as your Father in heaven. That’s all we’ll do. And you say, “I can’t. He said, “Good. Now you got it, because I did, and I will make you what you cannot do in the energy of your own flesh. And so those things bury us. Those kind of statements absolutely annihilate us in regard to our own self righteousness and prepare us for the salvation that Christ came to offer us.

Until we see that we’re like Paul said, “Wretched man that I am. Well, until I see my wretchedness, I’m not ready for Jesus. I mean, if I think if I think I’m about 90% okay, well, then all I need’s 10% Jesus. You see, so no, I’m I’m no percent okay. I had to see myself for what I was. There’s no way in the world that I’m going to go into the presence of a pure, holy God in my own holiness and purity, and so God, if you. Don’t do it for me. I’m not going to be there.” ~ Bob George
