Anger is Fear in Disguise

~ Scriptures frequently illustrates how fear, anxiety, and a perceived lack of control drive anger, while offering wisdom on how faith and peace counteract this reaction.

Verses Illustrating Fear Driving Anger

Genesis 4:5-7:“…So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. The Lord said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door…'”
- The Connection: Cain’s anger stemmed directly from his fear of rejection and inadequacy after his offering was not accepted.
1 Samuel 18:8-9:“And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him… And Saul eyed David from that day on.”
- The Connection: King Saul’s intense rage against David was entirely masked by his deep fear of losing his throne and his status.
Proverbs 29:25:“The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.”
- The Connection: When we fear what others think of us or what they can do to us, we get trapped in reactive, self-defensive behaviors like lashing out.

The Remedy: Trading Fear for Peace

The Connection: Bringing underlying anxieties to God provides a protective guard over your heart, keeping anger from taking over.

1 John 4:18:“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”

The Connection: When perfect love removes the root of fear, the defensive need for anger dissolves.

2 Timothy 1:7:“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

The Connection: God replaces a fearful, reactive mindset with self-control, which directly prevents angry outbursts.

Philippians 4:6-7:“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts…”

Apply Faith to the Equation!

Bible Study Books

The show featured callers seeking biblical guidance on family and personal challenges. Bob George advised a caller concerned about her father’s alleged affair to leave the matter primarily to her parents, while discussing her mother’s options and criticizing the pastor’s disclosure to church deacons. Another caller asked about diet and high cholesterol, and Bob emphasized practical lifestyle changes and self-control. A husband worried about his wife’s long-term eating disorder was encouraged to speak openly about his fears and seek counseling. The final caller asked how to advise women facing abuse; Bob noted that the circumstances matter and discussed seeking peace and addressing the abusive person’s behavior.

“And it isn’t between you and your father or you and your mother or the church’s business. That’s between you, your mother, and your father, and if she has recordings and or whatever it might be, and she has confronted your husband with that, and he still denies that, then she has an option from a marriage standpoint and everything to do with where you park your body on Sunday. She has an obligation, or an ability to say that she’s going to hang in there or she’s going to leave. She certainly has a right biblically to leave if indeed that adultery has taken place. But she also has the right to stay there and to love him in the midst of the sin, if as long as he is willing to admit to it and to repent of it, so those are the things that she’s going to have to deal with, and to get to get other people involved in that type of thing is nothing but destroying. You have a father; that father brought you into this world, and and and the issue is that you get involved in that thing. Before long, there’s going to be a hatred by your father towards you, and vice versa. That’s none of your business. That’s your mom’s business. And I saw many times, and these churches get all involved in this kind of stuff, and and and and when Jesus was, we’re totally misinterpreting what Jesus was saying in that regard. In regard to a sin problem, if it is flaunted and this type of thing is being flaunted, and that can destroy the body of Christ, then that’s the pastor’s role, not a bunch of people, the pastor’s role to say, go to a person and say, “It is my understanding that this is taking place, and I’m confronting you. Is this taking place? Probably they’ll deny it. But I will tell you, if this flaunting continues on, I’m going to ask you to leave the church for not because I don’t love you, but because it’s hurting the body of Christ, it is not doing the body of Christ any good to be talking about Jesus and living a life of righteousness and having you flaunting your sin in front of the body. So that’s that. Those are the options that are available. But as far as the knowledge of that type of thing, if you don’t have total knowledge of it, then that your mom and your dad are going to have be the ones that are going to have to work that out.” ~ Bob George
