Classic Christianity – Book of Romans P35 (01-28-19)

Synopsis

So often when people grow up in a church background, error is being taught. There are those teachings that keep us bound under law, by the mixing of law and grace, preventing people from walking freely in the new life God has given to those who have believed. Then there are those teachings that are serious doctrinal error. Many a person has walked down an aisle to receive forgiveness of sins, for that is what they have been taught. So the doctrine of salvation is taught in error.

Salvation is not getting your sins forgiven and that is it. Romans 5:10 and Ephesians 1:7 are key verses that, understood in context, explain this more clearly what Jesus accomplished for us, in what salvation is. When you were His enemies, lost, you were reconciled. How? By his death on a cross. How was what provided for then, at the cross, received? In Him. In Him, you have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

It is so heartbreaking to hear people being taught under law, or mixing law and grace, an impossibility. So many grow up in churches and are taught wrong, and are truly ignorant of the truth. When someone tells someone it is a sin to not go to church on Sunday, or that you must train your children only in this way, then you are teaching them about living under law. The letter of the law kills. It does not bring life. It brings suffering or hardship on people.

The spirit gives life. Scripture is very clear in Hebrews about the New Covenant of grace we are under, that we can rest from our works just as God did from His. Every day is a Sabbath rest for the people of God. You live by a trusting relationship with the living God. When you are born again, the Spirit is living in you, teaching you to say no to ungodliness and worldly passions, and He guides you into all truth. How important it is to study God’s word to know the author of the book, who is God. But who can understand God without the spirit of God living in Him? Nobody. But if you are not born again, having the Spirit of God placed in you, you need to hear His word because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. And how blessed you will be when you hear someone preach the meaning of it to you, who rightly explains the meaning, as revealed by the Spirit of God, and you believe the message and are born again.

But if you are born again, then in order to grow in grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, you need to study God’s word, in its whole context, while asking the Spirit to reveal the meaning of the word to you. The Spirit is the one who has to reveal the meaning of it to you.

Synopsis

So when you become born again, what is your identity? Are you a Baptist, a Presbyterian, or whatever title you choose to associate with? No. The bible only gives you one identity, a child of God. Denominations teach you denominational persuasions of men. It might be true. It might not be true. How do you know that what people are teaching you is true? By the word of God you hold in your hands, and by the Spirit of God, living in you, who has promised to guide you into all truth. Do you test whatever any man says is true? Do you test what is being said by looking into God’s word, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal truth to you? That is what the apostle Paul commended the Bereans for doing. We also have the exhortation to study the word so at to rightly divide the word of God. We are instructed to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

Classic Christianity – Book of Romans P19 (12-09-19)

Synopsis

The first four books of Romans laid the foundation of the need of all mankind for salvation. Both Jew and Gentile were addressed as both spiritually dead, sinners by nature. Whether under the law or apart from the law, they are both spiritually dead since birth. Sin and death entered the world through one man’s sin, Adam, the first created being.

Now, in chapter 5, Paul is addressing the solution of man’s problem. Man’s problem is greater than sin. His greatest problem is he is spiritually dead. Sin caused his death. So until the problem of sin is taken away, salvation cannot be offered. Now, two fundamental questions need to be understood. What is death? What is salvation?

When Adam chose for himself to decide right from wrong, good and evil, he died. God had told him that the day you decide for yourself that you do not need Me, and choose for yourself right from wrong, good from evil, you shall die. Adam did that and he died.
