Truth of 1 John 1 is Understood in the Context of a New Covenant Framework

Have you ever heard someone say that God forgives the sins you confess? Is that true according to the scripture? No. Like this and many other questions regarding forgiveness, people who ask such questions do not know what Jesus accomplished by way of the cross. We have all these theologies that are paralyzing the Christian community with this concept that you can get in and out of fellowship with God. Not only were all the sins of the entire world taken away, forgiven forever, from the eyes of God when Jesus shed His blood on a cross, but Jesus rose from the dead in order to give to you and me eternal life, an indestructible life, that cannot be taken away by sin, having ushered in a New Covenant of grace that we are to live under today. Understanding 1 John 1:9

Listen as Bob George provides the proper context of 1 John 1:9, as that is the most misquoted and misunderstood passage of scripture. Many people think this scripture is written to believers, and think it means that, as Christians, when we sin, we need to confess that sin to God in order to either get back in relationship or back in fellowship with God. There are those who think you can lose salvation and those who think you can get out of fellowship with God, that somehow God is so mad at you because of sinning that you do. It’s important to understand that anything that does not come from faith is sin (Romans 14:23) and the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).

First of all, this passage is a letter written by a pastor to a mixed audience of lost and saved people. In particular, there were Gnostics among them bringing their heretical teaching. Understanding Forgiveness in Light of the Full Gospel and the New Covenant

Without understanding the New Covenant we live under today, that can hinder us from properly interpreting scriptures. It is like you are trying to understand a doctrine, such as forgiveness, in isolation, and so you have tunnel vision, and come to incorrect conclusions. For example, how do you understand a passage such as this one?

Matthew 6:14-15
¹⁴ For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. ¹⁵ But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

And then, how do you explain a passage in the New Covenant, such as this one?

Colossians 3:13
¹³ Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

How many times do we see people stream down the aisles in order to receive Christ where their only understanding was I am going to come down to keep from going to hell? Then you leave that experience like you would on the day of atonement feeling good, but then the big question comes. What happens when I sin tomorrow or on the way back to the pew? I went forward and got my sins forgiven, but I just sinned on the way back to the pew. Then there is someone who will quote 1 John 1:9 as necessary to stay in fellowship with God, that you must ask God to forgive you when you sin. The Bigger Picture of the Cross: In Him, We Have Redemption, the Forgiveness of Sins, and Eternal Life

Why is it that certain passages of scriptures are interpreted incorrectly? Passages like 1 John 1:9 are one of those passages.

1 John 1:9
⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

It seems people will have tunnel vision on one passage and ignore all the rest of the passages where truth is clearly understood in light of the bigger picture of what Jesus accomplished. We are nit-picking a verse instead of seeing that the event of the cross took care of the interpretation of that verse, if you will let it.

As we recall that Jesus fulfilled the law because we could not do it, then died on a cross to pay the price of death for the sins of the entire world, a death no other man could pay, and then rose again, to offer us new life, called eternal life, that there is no way we could ever achieve.
