Be sure to enter into His sabbath rest today. We enter into His sabbath rest today when we rest from our works and rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. As a reminder, church is not a building on the corner of walk and don’t walk. Church is the body of believers in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 4:9-10

Context is Important for Proper Understanding of the Word of God

Context of scripture is key to understanding the Word of God. We are all guilty at times for glossing over key parts of the bible and tend to base our analysis of a verse of scripture here or there, based on our own understanding or those traditions that have been taught to us by other men. Bob George would say repeatedly, “don’t believe what I say, but check it out for yourself in the word of God.” He emphasized that he could be saying something wrong himself and to be a Berean and go back and verify things. Ultimately, trust in the Holy Spirit to teach you the meaning of the word of God.

As the Thanksgiving season is here, consider how much we have been freely given. If you are in Christ, you are free. You are free from the law. You are no longer under the law of sin and death, the law with it’s demands that you could never keep. Sin was your master and owner. In Christ, you are no longer a prisoner of the law. You were once locked up until faith should be revealed. Has faith been revealed to you? Can you now call God your Father because you have become a child of God, a new creation in Christ?

Even before the law was given, sin was in the world. All of us were born dead spiritually. The law was powerless to save you nor could it. We were already weak in our natural selves, being dead already. We keep doing what we know we ought not do and we do not do what we know we should. And when we fail, there is guilt under the law. As a new believer, you will tend to have more of a struggle in overcoming sinful habits, and that is not unusual, as you are just now on the starting line of having your mind renewed. Even as you mature in Christ, you will continue in that process of having your mind renewed until the day we meet the Lord. We will all continue to battle the flesh, and God knows our weaknesses and tendencies. We are all reminded to guard our life and doctrine closely and take heed that we do not fall, and to be gentle and humble toward others, as we ourselves could easily get caught up in any sin ourselves. Along with allowing God to change us, our thinking and attitudes of heart, to let your actions be in accordance with who you are as a child of God, then your emotions will follow.
