Classic Christianity – A Closer Look at The Word of God P5 (02-16-21)

Synopsis

You cannot separate the word of God from the person of God. They are so intertwined. When God says something it is a total reflection of who He is. You cannot separate who He is from what He says. They are one and the same, unlike us. God is not like us. When someone asks us, “How are you doing?”, we say, “Fine” when we know very well we are not fine. We can be phony. God is never phony. When God speaks, it is always truth.

The scriptures are the very words of God and Jesus, who is God, quoted from His own words. When scriptures prophecy something is going to happen, it happens as recorded in the scripture. Scriptures spoke of what is going to be fulfilled in Christ long before the unfolding events happen, and those events happen just as the Word says it will happen.

Throughout His earthly ministry Jesus validated the Word of God as the absolute standard of truth. The gospels record Jesus making almost 160 quotations from or allusions to the Old Testament. Oftentimes people grow up with religion and reject the reality of Christ Jesus. They associate Christ with things spoken in context of preachers speaking things that are simply not true. Instead of checking out what is being said as being true or not, we see no reality in it, so we reject the religion, but sadly we also reject Christ, whom we associate with in our minds. But one day, we see the reality of a changed life in someone else, who has the Spirit of God living in him. So we ask, what is it in him that is different? What kind of life does he have that I do not? Then you hear the practical wisdom he shares from God’s word. Your heart is moved. You see the practical wisdom and how people are able to walk in joy and peace. People have come to Christ that way. Christ in you was a light that shined in a dark world, but truth was made known concerning Christ, of the gospel that saves, and he believed and put His faith in Christ.

People of all walks of life have much in common. We are human, born dead spiritually and in need of new life. And when we come to new life in Christ Jesus, we need to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. We at first feed on just the milk of the word until such a time we are ready for solid food. We learn about the unconditional love of God, that we are not under law, but under grace, that we live under a New Covenant now. We learn the foundational truth of the totality of the cross, our new identity as a child of God, of being made complete in Christ, that we are not under law but under grace, that we live under a New Covenant not an Old Covenant. We learn what walking under grace means. We learn what it means to have our minds renewed.

Synopsis

There are things that are taught in religion or major denominations that are just not in accordance with what is true. We believe it because it was taught to us, frequently enough that we do not even think to ponder over whether it is really true or not. A very good example of this is the false practice of confessing your sins before taking the Lord’s supper so as to not be taking the Lord’s supper in an unworthy manner. Another example is this teaching that there is an age of accountability for salvation, that if you are under a certain age then you are not accountable to God for sin. That kind of question is in the same category as asking the question, “What about the heathen that has never heard?” And another question that often comes up is in regard to this supposed movie projection in heaven that presumably everyone’s sins will be projected so that all people and even angels will see. That simply is not true. There is so much error that needs to be replaced with truth. You are inundated with teaching from denominational persuasions of men, that if you are not in God’s word, relying on the Spirit to reveal truth to you, you have this tendency to hold onto things you think are true. You have heard something so often and so repetitively from people who have this reputation of being a leader or having some seminary degree that you believe what they say. They could be teaching truth, but they could also be teaching error. How do you know? So we are to be those who diligently study the scriptures to see if what someone says is true.

Many people think the ten commandments are a guide for a believer. But if you look into scripture, you come to realize that the law was made for the unbeliever, that they come to the end of the law for righteousness, that they might seek a Savior. Synopsis

Simeon prophesied that Jesus will cause the rising and falling of many in Israel, a sign that will be spoken against, so that the hearts of many will be revealed. There is something about mankind, who is born spiritually dead, that he is naturally opposed to truth. Truth sounds as foolishness to him. You can talk about God all day long, and people seem to be okay with that. People talk about all kinds of religions, and people are okay with that. But once you talk about Jesus or the truth of His word, there is an aversion, a pulling away, or even quite a reaction with false accusations.

In today’s world, hardly anyone wants to hear truth anymore. The bible and prayer have long been kicked out of the public sphere. Situational ethics and evolution have been taught in our schools. Seminaries are teaching things that ought not to be taught. Even bible societies and bible translators are not required to uphold the bible as the inerrant word of God. Jesus warned about this when he spoke about the tares among the wheat.
