In this study on Faith, Hope and Love, we have looked into what faith is, what faith is not, and that there is misplaced faith, and then there is faith placed properly on what is true, and on the one who is the way, the truth and the life. This faith in Christ Jesus, who is God in the flesh, is the faith we are talking about. Now this truth is what men cannot grasp on their own. This truth must be revealed by the Spirit of God to the hearts of men.

Now, many times, people relegate faith to just this aspect of getting saved, but then so many people do not really understand what saved means. Synopsis

There is nothing we can do to make ourselves acceptable to God. Now that is difficult to grasp by many people. Why is that? Is it because they do not know what sin really is or what righteousness really is? Most people tend to evaluate themselves next to how other people are doing. After all, they say, “I never murdered anyone one like Adolf Hitler”. They see sin in categories, where actions are greater than attitudes, committing adultery is worse than lust or murder is worse than anger or jealousy. Many view sin as a numerical counting system, where adultery gets you 10 points, stealing 9, and the other things we do a lot more of, such as lying, gets you one or two points. So many people think as if God grades on a curve, that somehow if your good outweighs your bad, then you will make it into heaven.

Rainey: I am reading Classic Christianity, and calling the number at the end of the book. I am dealing with depression. I have had a very difficult childhood, with divorce. I thought I got over most of the stuff. I was always religious, a Catholic growing up, and thought I would become a nun. I think anti-depressants help. I get messages that I do not have enough faith.

Bob: Let me see if I can help you. If you have depression, I can help you with that. Psychiatric patients are like that because they are obsessed with the past or the future. The first thing you have to understand is that God created you that our feelings will predictably respond to what you are thinking. As an example, “Have you ever felt the emotion of jealousy? What were you thinking? Jealous thoughts. That is why we are feeling thoughts of jealousy. Are we together?

We are going to pick up in the 15th chapter of John. We will be discussing how the Christian life is to be lived. Again, we cannot live Christ’s life for Him. We have to allow Him to live His life in and through us. When we do not understand that truth, we come to Christ, and with no less than a noble effort, we go and seek out a life we cannot live. We go out and struggle and strain, but we cannot go out and live a life Christ told us to live. We must allow Him to live it in and through us. The illustration He gave us on that is the parable of the vine and the branches. There is no greater illustration of it than this. He says, “I am the vine”. The vine is the source of the fruit. You are the branch. We bear the fruit but only the vine can supply the fruit. There is a bondage between the two. Jesus is saying, ’I want us to work together.
