The Cross Settles the Sin Issue; A Necessary Preparation for Eternal Life

Most of the world knows that history is divided into B.C., before Christ, and A.D., Anno Domini, the year of our Lord just from the calendar. A subset of the world knows historically that Jesus died, was buried and rose again. There is much information out there, but the most reliable and trustworthy information is the scriptures available to us today, the Word of God, written down through eyewitnesses of these events. Much of the world has the bible translated into their own language.

Jesus, God in Flesh, Sacrificed Himself Once for The Sins of The Whole World!

The Old Testament, as described in Deuteronomy, the ten commandments, is a list of commands that God commanded man to keep. In addition to those commands, all that is contained in the Law of Moses, the ceremonial laws, grain offerings and dietary laws, were required to be kept. Included in that was the sacrificing of bulls and goats, to cover sin. That was called atonement. Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the Israelites were required to come to Jerusalem to get all their sins covered, that they had accumulated that whole year. The high priest had to sacrifice a bull or a goat brought to them by a person wanting their sins covered. Those sins were only covered until the next year, and those sacrifices would have to be performed all over again. In addition to those annual sacrifices there were also those daily sacrifices for sin as well, that would never end, and could not take away sins. What was Wrong With the Old Covenant?

Since we have a New Covenant that replaced the Old Covenant, what was wrong with the Old Covenant? We read that the law was holy, righteous and good (Romans 7:12), so the problem was not really with the law, or the Old Covenant. The problem is with us, the people. No one can keep the law. As Paul recognized in his own life and described for us in Romans 7, that the things I want to do I do not do and the things I hate to do I do anyways. He once thought he could obey the law and described his life as far as legalistic righteousness is concerned, faultless (Philippians 3:4-6). At one time Paul thought he could keep the law, that in his mind, the law was intended to bring life. He discovered that when the law said, “Do not covet”, instead of not coveting, he coveted all the more.

Have you understood what faith is? Faith must have an object. It is more than an intellectual assent to facts or some sort of faith in some mystery, that nobody knows what that mystery is. I can know that Abraham Lincoln died in Ford’s theater and by believing that, that does not have any impact on my life. I can even go to church, thinking that if I go to church then somehow God will accept me, or my good deeds will outweigh my bad. I can think that I can get all my sins confessed that built up during the week off my chest. I could be doing that whether I was going to a Catholic mass or even sitting in my own bedroom quoting 1 John 1:9, but all the while wondering if I missed confessing some sin. I could even think that I came to Jesus to get all my sins forgiven, and then still doing those confessing of sins as well.
