Classic Christianity – Book of John Part 45 (07-15-19)

We have to understand God wants us to grow in the depth of the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, to get to know him deeper and deeper and deeper, to know the height, width, depth and breadth of the love of God and to know this love that surpasses knowledge so you and I can experience the fullness of God in our lives and be controlled by his Spirit.

Ephesians 3:16-18

16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

These callers called in to the original People to People radio program Bob George was on for over 30 years. Most of the questions were to get clarification of truth on some commonly misunderstood passages of scripture. Laurie asked, “Where do you place Melchizedek in Hebrews 6:16?” Oftentimes by simply reading the verses before and after a scripture that is unclear to you, you can discern what is important to understand in a passage. We often want to focus on a very narrow point rather than get the spiritual truth that Jesus wants you to know. Bob emphasized that Hebrews is about explaining the superiority of Jesus Christ. To the Jew, there is no one greater than Abraham. Hebrews clears this matter up by explaining that Melchizedek is greater than Abraham and Jesus is greater than everyone.

Edwin asked a very common question, typical of those who are new believers or those improperly instructed from religious teaching. He asked what is the difference between baptism of water and baptism of the Holy Spirit. By studying the scriptures the answer is very clear. Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

Bob answers calls from several believers who struggled with sin and temptation, like all of us (1 Corinthians 10:12-13). Believers can get caught up in a sin, whether a continual pattern of drunkenness or even a one time sin of fornication that led to an unwanted or untimely pregnancy. So Bob shares encouraging words and truth with those who called with their struggles and plea for help. Bob shares the truth of the gospel in Jesus Christ (John 1:12, John 10:10, John 11:25, 1 John 5:12, Romans 5:10, 1 Corinthians 1:30) and His unconditional love and acceptance (Hebrews 10:14, Romans 8:38-39). There is no fear in love and perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18). God causes all things to happen for the good for those who love Him and are called according to His good purpose (Romans 8:28). Victory Over Depression Teaching

So many callers simply called to thank Bob for the teaching he has done for so many years. Many have read books he had written, such as “Victory over Depression”, while others remember hearing Bob teach at a conference about the finality of the cross or the New Covenant. Their lives were personally changed as they simply replaced error with truth. Two books that these listeners mentioned were “Classic Christianity” and “Victory over Depression”.

Bob summarized the purpose of life by saying we are to live one day at a time, sharing the love of the Father with people. God loves people unconditionally and wants to set them free. If truth is what sets people free, then error is what binds them. The only purpose for us being here is to be available to God to let Him live in us and through us. It is not about living a bunch of principles or under law or getting a bunch of people together doing the same thing, at the same time with the same enthusiasm. Andy asked about what day believers should celebrate Christmas for he heard that that date was really the birthday of a pagan god and Christmas has pagan origins. Bob answered that the date is not important for you are not celebrating a date but the birth of Christ. Bob’s advice is to not get involved in disputable issues.

Julie called to ask Bob about his viewpoint on living with someone outside of marriage. Julie was rationalizing her sin of fornication, specifically called out in scripture as sinful behavior. We should never get to the point of calling something good that is bad, calling something other than what God calls it, which is sin. We may not be able to carry it out and that is why Christ came to dwell in you by His Spirit. Forgiven

Bob answers common questions by several callers. There is no sin accept that which is common to man and all of us are growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. So as the church, born again with an indwelling holy Spirit, we are to encourage and help one another as the Holy Spirit has taught and helped us. That is the motive of love behind all that Bob has labored for the benefit of the saints.

Jessie asked advice on whether it was okay to ask God for forgiveness. He never knew his earthly father and so was trying to discern how to relate to his heavenly Father. Bob George graciously shared that asking God for forgiveness is not exercising faith because Jesus already forgave us all our sins when he died 2000 years ago in our place. We now interact with God on the basis of grace, not on the basis of sin and death. You can talk to him about your sin so as to get counsel in how to live in the new life of faith He has given you. Bob elaborated on the issue of forgiveness and new life in Christ Jesus.
